COMMUNITY: A New Order Online Tribute

Editorial Reviews
Album Description
Almost a year ago, designer Mike Nguyen (USA), musician Alejo Parella (Argentina) and webmaster of neworderonline Nicolas LeBlanc (Canada) - all long standing fans of the English band New Order - had the idea of creating a CD as a tribute to Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook, Stephan Morris, Gillian Gilbert and Ian Curtis. The members of the legendary New Order and Joy Division.

So, using the vehicle of neworderonline.com – the most popular New Order website on the internet – they ran a competition for other fans to submit their own cover versions of classic New Order tracks and a few from the band’s side projects.

This kind of compilation CD has been attempted before, yes, but not on the same kind of scale and with the same degree of talent and determination – not to mention the incredible effort by so many different from all corners of the world. Musicians responded from many x different countries across the globe. Not one of these bands had met before ‘in person’ and for many, this was their first contact with the producers of the CD.

As it turned out, this was a mammoth, time consuming undertaking - involving rehearsals, bands booking studio time, submissions by bands, collation of those submissions, fans voting on those submissions, working on designs, applying for publishing and reproduction rights, mastering, printing, and finally distribution of the CD.

Every track on the CD was voted for by subscribers to neworderonline.com, with an elimination round for each batch of tracks, so this CD is truly a representation of the tastes of New Order fans across the world.

Accompanying this release is a CD EP, containing further cover versions, both by bands featured on `Community' and those that didn't quite fit the mould, but still deserved an airing.

5 out of 5 stars an excellent achievement.......2004-06-24

Having followed this project from the start, I am full of praise for the three amigos who started the whole thing. Coordinating a worldwide project like this can't have been easy and having now seen and listened to the end result, it's hats off to them!
The artwork is professionally done, the flags especially are a nice touch.
Not all the songs will please everyone, but on average I think this is a good representation of New Order's catalogue, and should be appreciated by most fans, together with the Community Tribute album.
Personal favourites are Digital's Leave Me Alone and Nemesis' Crystal.

5 out of 5 stars Nice little side-project!.......2004-06-19

The Community EP is 3 things, if you have followed the evolution of the "mother-album" Community, the EP is the side-kick.

It contains 3 songs that, according to the producers, should have been on the main album but have been eliminated on the process (Temptation, Ceremony and Dreams Never End), it also contains the song from the band that trully represents what NewOrderOnline is Digital (formerly known as Known Pleasures), the song that won the Angel Dust remix contest, and finally, an exclusive new track, Crystal.

Crystal is probably one of the first song to be completely constructed over the internet. The female singer is in Greece, the musician is in Argentina, the producer is in the USA, nobody ever met, but the result is fantastic.

A definite item to add to your New Order collection, but buy ONLY if you are a fan!

Having followed this project from the start, I am full of praise for the three amigos who started the whole thing. Coordinating a worldwide project like this can't have been easy and having now seen and listened to the end result, it's hats off to them!
The artwork is professionally done, the flags especially are a nice touch.
Not all the songs will please everyone, but on average I think this is a good representation of New Order's catalogue together with some fine Joy Division tracks, and should be appreciated by most fans, together with the Community EP.

Personal favourites are Project Wintermute's Transmission, Labster's Face Up, Kremlin's Sooner Than You Think, and Flight's Dreams Never End.

1 out of 5 stars 1 1/2 Stars for this Tribute Album.......2004-06-22

New Order & Joy Division is one of my favorite bands,
This isn't a bad idea, quite a good one actually,
what fails is the actual music itself, 2nd rate at best,
Not all are, but majority is just that, not too mention gimmicky.

If I look at this like it is a tribute album done by a website, I'd say it is a accomplishment, major efforts and time consumption, and the people who are involved are big fans.

If I look at it like a regular tribute release, It's no better then any other tribute CDs, probably overall, a little worst then the others, It's probably one of those albums that you listen to once, and said "that was interesting" and never listen to it again.

As Spotnick2 said, "he tries to stay away from tribute albums", my advice to all of you is, "this one is no exception"
Not to mention, I have never seen so much Ego rubbing over a release of a CD of this quality.

The Price is also too high, along with Community EP.
So much better stuff u should spend 17-20$ on, unless u live in a small world or you are really really rich...

5 out of 5 stars The best New Order related tribute album ever.......2004-06-19

As a New Order fan, I've always tried to stay away from tribute albums, because I never found one that was good, and I most of the time said to myself, why should I listen to pale copies of the songs I love when I can listen to the real thing?

Most tribute albums are done by labels to help promote their new bands, this one isn't. It's about a community of fan that decided to create something unique: an international tribute albums by the fans for the fans.

So the artists on this album are true fans of the band, fan enough to visit the biggest New Order fan site on the internet. Then the contest went on, and 16 months later, you have the final product.

Now for the music itself, if you are a true fan of New Order and Joy Division, you will enjoy it. It's the selection of the best 16 tracks on the big contest, as voted by over 300 true fans. The sleeve is also the result of a contest, so it's a complete project and everybody is quite pleased with it so far.

Worth a try!

5 out of 5 stars In Good Order.......2004-06-18

As a fan of both New Order and Joy Division I looked forward to hearing this cd.

Great cd. Some wonderful performances and not a bad track out of all of them. All of the tracks are treated with the respect real fans of the band would wish to see.

Highlights for me were Kremelin, Evaluna, Flight and especially the C Bentley track.

A must for all New Order/ Joy Division fans.

5 out of 5 stars Putting the Joy back into Joy Division.......2004-06-18

When I first heard about this album I was VERY usnsure.

You know, the usual tribute CD's are pretty poor, with one good cover on it.

This, however is different. From the opening note, to the 'secret' ending this album just oozes class.

There is something here for everyone. Synth based tracks for the techno orderites to guitar based tracks for the JD heads. There are many different styles and takes on the album, from the emptiness of Thieves like us to the full on power of Dead Souls.

It's very hard to pin down favourites but the perfect kiss or dreams never end would set the level of the bar.

Hope there will be a Community II
