Reunited with producer Rick Rubin and guitarist John Frusciante (both of whom were on board for the 1991's breakthrough Blood Sugar Sex Magik), the Chili Peppers waste no time in burying their last effort, the so-so One Hot Minute. Californication's kickoff cut, "Around the World," swaggers around the room, reacquainting itself with old fans and welcoming new ones. Fuzzy Hendrix vibes and popcorn bass lines still rule the roost, along with a heaping helping of disco magic and some unexpected twists. Ten years ago, Anthony Kiedis and company wouldn't have been comfortable doing revamped new wave ("Parallel Universe") or unpretentious ballads (the acoustic "Road Trippin'"), but such material fits Californication's extra-wide canvas. Except for a few meandering numbers that could have been excised, the Red Hot Chili Peppers succeed and regain their footing on the mountain of adrenalized funk. --Jason Josephes

Chili Peppers takes it to a whole nother level again!.......2007-07-16

i've admired RHCP for a very long time. always considered them a HIGLY underrated band. they create such funky, original, alternative rock music. they just have a sound that no one has. this album is probably my fave from them. they've slowed it down a bit, with less funky stuff but it's still as good. i love Scar tissue. there's not much slow, sad, soul- serching songs (which this is) that can sound good. this does. i absolutely loved it when i first heard it. love the guitar hook. californication is another masterpiece with an amazing guitar sound. "all around the world" is an awesome album opener! it's rockin, funky; it just shows that there's no one doing music like the Peppers. that song is 100% quality. i also enjoyed "Right on time" very disco and funky. i also liked This velvet glove, get on top, and definitely Emmit remmus. almost all the songs sound good! kiedis' voice also soars on this album. as i said i love when artists evolve their sound and don't come with the same thing over and over (Beyonce). i'm so tried of fake artists with fake sounds. the peppers definitely moved to another level with this album but a few songs still had their old funk. too bad they are not recognized as much as they should be.

Just a flat out great CD. More good songs per CD than most, even more than some "greatest hits" CDs. I has good songs you know and the ones you don't know will soon become favorities.

Best CD purchase in a long time!.......2007-06-17

"Californication" is an absolute masterpiece! I have recently become a RHCP fan and have some of their CDS. I have to say that "Californication" is probably one of their best. It's very original. Even if you aren't a Red Hot Chili Peppers fan, you should at least give this album a listening to. If you do, i think you would be pleasantly surprised. It was worth every penny.

OK CD.......2007-06-01

This CD is alright, but the Red Hot Chili Peppers have some CDs that are much better. It has some really good songs, but I don't like the rest.

HUGE Chili Pepper Fan.......2006-12-14

I enjoy this album very much. I am a RHCP fanatic although sometimes I am in the mood for light relaxing music and this fits perfectly. So, I get to enjoy the best of both worlds with this excellent tribute to their work. Might I add that Under the Bridge is beautifully composed here, and is my favorite track of all time and on this album as well.

Not-so-loud Chili Peppers' songs.......2006-10-30

First and foremost, The Red Hot Chili Peppers are a hard rock band. Nobody is going to buy this album in order to hear the Chili Peppers- that would be stupidity. There are only two reasons anybody would purchase this album:

1. You love the Chili Peppers' music and You want a change of pace.
2. You love listening to string instruments (such as the violin).

Buy this album if you love the Chili Peppers' music and you love strings. That sounds like a no-brainer...

I realy happend to enjoy this CD. I just bought it recently and every time i listen to it i feel like its the real thing because its so similar. I Love just relaxing to this cd. I think it is worth hearing.

..but I just feel indifferent about this CD. I bought it thinking it would be an orchestrated-type stuff, which it is but I was hoping for something I could relax to. Whenever I hear the music in this CD, I think of weddings. Don't get me wrong, it's a good CD, but just not what I was expecting (which was a more relaxing kind of orchestration).

oh man.......2004-06-29

i bought this cd when i went looking for the last elusive cd that was missing from my rhcp collection(freaky styley, you should buy that one too)...i ended up walking out with this one as well and i rocked it all the way home with my windows open. this isn't an orchestral arrangement, it is a true to the original quartet: every solo, (almost) every fill, and every vocal que is present. The basslines jump from Persiani's prodigious upright (bass) and u can almost picture flea bouncing around. this work brought a whole new breadth and life to th emusic that makes the hair on the back of my neck stand on end; and for that, i applaud the string quartet.

I'd like to review the reviewer. One of the greatest albums ever written, performed by some of the most talented musicians ever to grace our planet .... and all he could muster was: " The Chili Peppers and their box set rocks. Need I say more"?! Well yes, I think so... if you are going to review an album! Because that's why these reviews are written. To allow those who don't know the album to get an idea of what it's like. Or is it just another excuse to Blogg your name in ? If you don't have it you need it. It's absolutely outstanding every track and one of the defining albums of our time.

Fourth single and title track from the album "Californication", this single is split in two parts, with each part backing the title track with two live tracks-- an end of the show jams and "I Could Have Lied" from "Blood Sugar Sex Magick".

The title track is fantastic-- laid back, moody, but somehow driven, finding the band experimenting with vocal harmonies and synth sounds in an exposition about the lack of humanity in Hollywood.

"I Could Have Lied" is an interesting ballad, but I always felt that it fell apart on record because Anthony Kiedis' vocal lacked any confidence for a ballad as stripped down as this one. The live take fares a bit better, and Frusciante's feedback-driven soloing is superb. The Brisbane jam features a low-tempo groove, some feedback drenched guitar, and some virtually unintelligible singing from Kiedis. It certainly is an interesting display, and it sounds like it would have been fantastic in person, but on record, it loses something.

Regardless of anything else, these were limited edition on release and almost impossible to find. If you're a completionist, dig up the Australian release, which seems easiest to locate.

This is truly a masterpiece collection of RHCP, their best song on their new album "Californication" is bundled together in this package with the must for all RHCP fans: a bonus VCD. Yes, that means Video CD. I believe that this video CD is truly a limited edition treasure and should be cherished by all the RHCP listeners who have the honor of buying this album around the world. This is truly something which you should buy. If you don't get this then you aren't a hardcore RHCP fan.
