And Now That It's 13 Years Later ..........2007-04-04
... after the first printing of this collection, let me say LOUD and CLEAR that WaxTrax! (now TVT) Records NEEDS TO RE-RELEASE THIS COLLECTION OF CLASSICS!!! As it stands, Black Box is a hard to find collector's item, as the prices for used copies can attest (nobody's gonna have a new one available, kids, at least not for a reasonable price). You're lucky if you can find someone who kept immaculate, anal-retentive care of the discs. I was lucky to find a copy of this set at my local record shop, but the condition of the CDs would rate as GOOD, VERY GOOD at best. I'm just glad that after 13 years, they will still play in my CD player.
I'm not going to fire off a huge, elaborate critique of the set. If this kind of music from this time period pushes the dopamine receptors in your brain over the brink (and you know who you are), then this collection is for you. Yeah, it's primarily industrial in nature, but there are hints of techno, hard/goth rock, and dark experimental music. The 3-CD set clocking in at roughly 3 1/2 hours of music represents a nice, thick, bloody slice of a time and a place, and yes, it's just that damn good. Read the other reviews for point by point details. At worst, this one gets 4.5 stars. At best, it easily garners 5.
Wow....just wow.......2006-11-27
My interest in industrial music and its history lead me down the path to this little almost forgetten jem at this point.
This is industrial music as its not made anymore, as industrial music since the death of this label has become even more of a minor niche market fading into the obscure. But this box set captures industrial's golden age. An interesting mix of styles and history, it actually prompted to go visit the orginal WaxTrax store in Denver while on vacation(ironicly seeing one of the artists on the boxset.KMFDM). With all the music revials going on, I wish someone would revive this kind of industrial music, before its completely forgotten. The track that is the most well known is probably the cover of "Supernaut" with the Trent Renzor vocals, but that is to over look alot of other amazing material. You can feel the energy, the thoughtfulness, and the pioneering spirit racing though every track. The only shortcoming i'd say would be that Front 242's material couldn't be included.
Music history buffs will also get a kick out of this, there is a little booklet helping outline the history of the label, and quite a history it is. I find it quite sad that there is no real written books about WaxTrax and the chicago industrial scene of the 80s like there is for punk, hardcore, indie and their counterparts.
I recommend this comp 100%, and hope that you can feel the same love for this music as I do.
I wish I could give this collection 18 stars.......2002-11-04
I dj'd at college radio stations for 5 years in the late '80s, and was always pleasantly excited when I found a Wax Trax! label in the New bin. (Unfortunately, I usually did my shows in the dark and thought the name was "Wax Traxi" for the longest time!) The label was a mainstay of industrial music, and founders Jim Nash and Dannie Flesher consistently managed to sign and produce the most exciting musicians of the time -- the many incarnations of dear troubled genius Al Jourgensen, The Young Gods, FLA, Coil, Controlled Bleeding, Doubting Thomas, A Split Second, Lead Into Gold, Psychic TV, Foetus -- they are all here on three great discs packed with music that makes you want to move and feel. Disc One, Track One: Trent Reznor covers Black Sabbath's 'Supernaut' with 1000 Homo DJs -- a version previously unreleased, and then you are zipping through Sister Machine Gun and The Young Gods and oh so many more seminal industrial bands. Divine puts the "fun" in funky with "The Name Game", the label's second release. I was also happy to hear a few groups that had somehow slipped past me the first time around, like Wreck. I had a great time listening to this collection and am still listening to it. You can put in any of the three discs and be happy for a long time.
The packaging is beautiful -- a heavyweight black box covered with hip lettering and disturbing images; three black CD cases containing labeled discs and a listing with artist, cut, time and version information; and a terrific booklet that relates the anecdotal history of Wax Trax! -- it's artistically interesting as well as substantive and entertaining.
If you enjoy industrial music, you cannot go wrong with this incredible collection of the music and people that started it all. And why not put a few bucks into the pockets of the guys who loved the music more than the profits?
Worth the money!.......2002-02-28
This Chicago-based record label compilation is an awesome chunk of the work done by most of the best industrial bands that came out of N. America and Europe in the 80s. Very interesting and innovative music- fans of industrial music or darker techno should like most of this stuff quite a bit.
A wee handbook for the perplexed.......2000-11-25
This 3 CD set offers an excellent overview of the artists that made WaxTrax! Records synonymous with beautiful, challenging music. Coil, Thrill Kill Kult, Meat Beat Manifesto, Ministry, KMFDM, Pig, RevCo, even some early Frontline Assembly is featured on this Box. And for you NIN fans, there's even the original version of 1,000 Homo DJs' 'Supernaut' with Trent Reznor on vox. The enclosed booklet encapsulates the WT! history, including the TVT buyout. Overall, a great mix of music and information about the early days in Chicago that is well worth the price.

Not too shabby.......2006-11-10
I've avoided buying Pistols live recordings (save for Filthy Lucre) simply because I worried the quality would be suspect. But this ain't bad at all. It has the feel of a good quality bootleg, complete with between songs chatter and false starts. If you like thie Pistols, you'll like this; but don't play it for unbelievers.
Cash From Chaos.......2006-09-07
Before the Sex Pistols began a swift decent into back-stabbing oblivion that destroyed so many Stadium Rock bands of the 1970s, there was a group that pounded out some great music in the English clubs.
Live at the 76 Club is one of several concerts that found its was on bootleg vinyl in the late 1970s. It features original bass player Glenn Matlock - who later played bass and guitar for Iggy Pop - John Lydon, who is starting to formulate that "Rotten" image, and the drumming/guitar of Cook-n-Jones, respectively.
The set is not only starting the foundation for the band's only studio release, but also one that had only minor variations on stage. I have always felt the highlights are Lydon's frantic rendition of The Stooge's No Fun and the band powering through The Who's Substitute.
Though the sound quality isn't top notch, it captures the band on a night where the music means more than the style. One needs only to hear performances from the infamous United States tour to realize the group had deteriorated to nearly a parody of itself.
But on this night, you will hear the Pistols playing hard, playing loud and playing because they believed in their band.
Complete Shows are nice. Complete shows with Matlock are even nicer........2005-08-05
I recommend this for anyone who's ever wondered what the Pistols sounded like with their origonal bass player, who could, you know, play bass. It's June of '76, the club is tiny, the PA system gives out before the set's over, half the time you can barely make out what Johnny's singing, la da di da...
Buy it anyway. The power of the band with a competent bass player bottoming out the sound will change the way you listen to them. Sure, this is before "God Save the Queen," but the covers of "Substitute" and "No Fun" more than make up for it. Enjoy.

electro art punk greatness.......2007-05-08
I bought this cd based on a review that I read in URB. Having never heard it, I was to say the least, very pleased. I guess I would describe it as electro punk, while sometimes having a psychedilic rock sound remniscant of the Cramps. Favorites include: track 2-Mund Auf-Augen Zu, track 3-Chemie Des Alltags, track 4-LA Shaker and track 12-Heavy Rotation. Most songs are aggresive while at the same time dancable. There is also a quieter moment with the song-"High is the Pine" which really works quite well. The thematic "Cobra Movement" is also interesting which is a sample heavy song which sounds like an old bollywood soundtrack mixed with Jane Fonda workout. Overall, this is an excellent cd.

Customer Reviews:
Just like the old days.......2005-03-30
With all these superficial bands like Good Charlotte and Yellowcard leading today's youth and being hailed as "punk" bands, it's extremely refreshing to sit back and listen to the Sex Pistols again. Although the songs are polished and professional-sounding, there is a definite humourous undertone to the entire disc. The band members can be heard trading quips between songs, and audience noise leaks into the microphones so that you can always hear cheers and laughter below the music. But by far, the high point of the CD is track 14. Johnny Rotten starts off "Problems," and within seconds, his microphone produces some atrocious feedback, prompting jeers and mocking laughter from the audience. Rotten and the rest of the band employ a few distraction techniques so that the rest of the show gets on quickly, but it's nice to hear a bit of unprofessionalism in a show that was otherwise almost flawless. This is the perfect album for anyone new to the punk genre, and also for Pistols fans eager to catch the spirit of the early punk shows.

Customer Reviews:
Anarky In its Purest Form.......2003-01-19
This is truly a good live pistols record. It is definately a bit less refined than Bollocks, but i think it makes it alot better. It has an edge that is impossoble to find on a studio recording. This cd has some great songs on it, including a bit of feedback from the PA which really puts you in the mood of a club. I would say the standout tracks are "No Feelings" "Seventeen" and "Sub-Mission". I also really enjoyed the interview disc as well. In all this is a terriffic value. 10 dollars is a pittance to pay for such a great piece of sex pisotls history.
Live Pistols.......2002-11-10
A decent sound, better than the average bootleg. Submission is great as is Pretty Vacant. Buy it.
time for some loud lo-fi top notch punk rock & a humour too.......2002-06-03
The Sex Pistols are not as polished and as tight here as they are on their only official album, "Never Mind the Bollocks..." and some fans may find that a good thing. I think both are equally good. The performance of "Anarchy in the UK" is the loudest, fastest most growling version I've heard. Almost as entertaining is the bonus disc which features radio interviews done on the day of the last gig for the original Sex Pistols. Here, we hear Sid be at times brilliant, ("When there are no more blacks, whites, punks... ect.") sometimes trying to upstage Johnny (especially at the end of the interview, John sounds really [mad] about this.) and sometimes downright scary ("Him (Johnny) and I will probably dead in two years.") We also hear all the Pistols take the ... out of Americans, Pete Townshend, groupies and former band member Glen Matlock. This won't be essential to everyone but major Sex Pistols fans will get a lot of enjoyment out of this.
