Would-Be-Goods [EP]
Editorial Reviews
Album Description
First release in eight years from adored English act with previous records on the legendary él and Trattoria labels. The title track is a two-minute manic pop thrill sure to incite frenzy on dancefloors across the globe with blazing guitars and the pristine voice of Jessica Griffin singing about French film star Emmanuelle Béart. "Je lèche les vitrines" and "Everybody Wants My Baby" transport us to the Rive Gauche, with acoustic guitars, cello, and accordion serving as a perfect backdrop for Jessicas hauntingly beautiful voice. The closing "Words" is another electric affair that swings in all the right places and could have fit nicely on the bands debut album "The Camera Loves Me."

Album Description
The Would-Be-Goods are back, their eccentric and evocative guitar pop honed by two years of live performance. Jessica Griffin, enigmatic star of eighties cult label él, is still at the helm, with her crew of elegant rascals - Peter Momtchiloff, guitarist (Talulah Gosh, Razorcuts, Heavenly, Scarlet's Well) and occasional songsmith; Debbie Green, drummer and darling of the London nineties garage scene (Headcoatees); and Lupe Nuñez-Fernandez, bass player and co-founder of cosmopolitan East London quietists Pipas. These twelve songs demonstrate that the Would-Be-Goods have lost none of their melancholy charm or wit but have moved beyond the ornate eclecticism of their acclaimed third album `Brief Lives' (2002) to a classic guitar pop sound ranging from new folk (`Bluebeard') through tango (the poignantly funny `Too Old') to garage rock (`Miss La-di-dah'). Love songs to lions, frolics in the Garden of Eden, French casanovas and personal demons await you. Let the Would-Be-Goods be your guides.

Album Description
Originally signed to Mike Alway's él record label, Would-Be-Goods were the perfect representation of that label's legendary and unique style. Based around the vocal talents and songwriting skills of Jessica Griffin, a critically acclaimed debut album "The Camera Loves Me" was recorded with musical backing from label-mates The Monochrome Set. The band's cult status around the world grew over the years, and the Japanese label Polystar released a second album "Mondo" in 1992. Last year, following the addition of Peter Momtchiloff (ex-Talulah Gosh, Heavenly, Marine Research) on lead guitar, the band set forth to write and record songs for their eagerly anticipated third album. "Brief Lives" features sixteen outstanding songs across which Griffin spins a world peopled with crazed historical characters, mysterious cabaret performers and arch sophisticates. Lovers meet and part before a backdrop of chromed sports cars and elegant coffee bars, soundtracked by Momtchiloff! 's brilliantly expressive guitar. The perfectly monikered Orson Presence adds piano, organ, harpsichord, vibraphone and strings, while Jessica's mother contributes violin and mandolin on two tracks. Rich with imagination, "Brief Lives" is everything that is sorely missing in the world of pop music today.
