Andrew Masiel, Chairman Native American Democratic Caucus 4/20/2000
He reaches into the human soul and delicatly picks what is best. I feel blessed to know his talent.

Natelie Noel, GoddessStrides Productions, May 2000
I promise, you will make a gift of his musical alchemy, his magical journey to someone you hold dear.

Album Description
As I listen to the sound of the flute, I remember to breathe again. The gift of tranquillity is priceless. Through tour sincere words and melodies I am reminded of the importance of harmony. With myself, with others, with this world. This album should come with a warning not to operate anything while playing it. Very peaceful and perfect for massage and meditation.

Things don't get much schmaltzier than a Dobro played Hawaiian style, which is why it's fitting that Cowboy Jack Clement offers one up on "The Blue Side of Lonesome," Leon Payne's dated but charming classic--only one such excursion into blue-haired reminiscing on an album of over-the-top sentimentality. It was the legendary Clement who paired smart-ass folkie Prine and bluegrass totem Wiseman, but the singers themselves chose the repertoire, which reads like songs people of a certain age might pick on a dry drunk. The tunes range, believe it or not, from religious hymns to covers of Patti Page's 1957 hit "Old Cape Cod," Kris Kristofferson's underrated "Just the Other Side of Nowhere," and Tom T. Hall's "Old Dogs, Children, and Watermelon Wine," with a little Elvis and Ernest Tubb thrown in for good measure. It's fitting that Prine and Wiseman revisit the Hall standard, since oddly, both singers vocally favor the Nashville storyteller from time to time. But one has to question their use of the Grand Ole Opry's Carol Lee Singers, who show up on several cuts and seem, well, just bizarre on a John Prine record, even as they evoke the lushly famous Nashville Sound of the 1960s. Suffice it to say, this is a quirky project, and if Prine's scratchy baritone and Wiseman's melodic tenor sometimes overlap to where you can't tell who's singing what, it doesn't much matter. You're listening to two new pals having what seems to be the time of their life. --Alanna Nash

4 out of 5 stars Prine and twang.............2007-07-03

I first caught the wind of the country & western direction in John Prine when I heard his earlier CD "In Spite of Ourselves." The Nashville influence has laid a noticable twang on his voice to the extent that the vocals are sometimes hardly recognizable as Mr. Prine. As mentioned in some of the other reviews, on my first listening, I also thought immediately of Tom T. Hall. For long time followers more accustomed to John's rebellious angles (and the wry title, at least, is pure Prine) this CD might be quite a shock. But I accept it as simply the mark of a mature artist stretching himself artistically, not "selling out" for the sake of sales to a mellower audience. My apologies for not commenting more about Mac, I am less familiar with his work but I assume that stylistically this is more in his comfort zone. His vocals bond nicely with John's and this is definitely equality in a duet. A nice relaxing work, accept it for what it is, not what you expect of John Prine.

4 out of 5 stars I guess I'm an "average people.".......2007-06-27

I heard John Prine and Mac Wiseman on NPR one afternoon
and fell in love. Their song choices are wonderful.

3 out of 5 stars A Disappointment ...and so sorry to say it.......2007-06-26

This was such a disappointment. I had looked forward to this for months, having admired Mac Wiseman for over fifty years, and Prine for thirty or so. But this just doesn't work.

The songs are such classics that each singer could do them well while singing by himslef. But there are just no strong emotional tugs from these "collaborations." Mac has done some great work singing with other bluegrass singers, and Prine has been terrific in his work with women singers ... but these two great men never seem to feed off one another. The feel suggests that these guys were not even singing together. I'll lay this away and go back to the many songs that I have by each that are so terrific.

5 out of 5 stars John Prine Love.......2007-06-14

I don't think there is anything John Prine could do to diminish the love we feel for his music in our family. We think he might be America's poet, or one of them anyway. This CD is sweet and lovely and seems like two great guys sitting down playing and singing some nice tunes together and we all get to listen or sing along. "Standard songs for average people..." - the title says it all. Just a sweet ole time with John Prine and, in this case, with Mr. Wiseman, too. I gave this to my husband for our anniversary, along with the recently released John Prine DVD, and we are always just so grateful for great artists and John Prine is surely one.

1 out of 5 stars Awfully corny.......2007-06-12

Sorry, love nearly all of JP's output but this is the worst I've ever heard, schmaltzy, corny, cringe-inducing, hurts me to say but it's the way I would see it. Bought it blind on the strength of all John's other stuff and regretted it immediately. If everyone else thinks it's great, maybe I can get my money back on ebay...

5 out of 5 stars Definitely an essential collection of mid-1960s music from Mac .......2007-01-02

With over 50 years in business, Rural Rhythm Records has built a catalog that connects many dots from past to present. Since its 1955 creation, Rural Rhythm has released hundreds of classic performances by many legendary bluegrass and old-time musicians such as J.E. Mainer, Don Reno, Red Smiley, Mac Wiseman, Vassar Clements, Hylo Brown, Bill Harrell, Jim Eanes, and many others. This album is part of that archival catalog. The label owes its Arcadia, California start to Uncle Jim O'Neal whose vision was to release the music of many top bluegrass and old-time musicians in the 1950-70s, seeking success where Starday had failed by producing records of limited appeal by lesser known, albeit talented, musicians.

Mac Wiseman was born on May 23, 1925. He hails from Crimora, Virginia but lives on Percy Priest Lake, near Nashville. He was born in 1925, the same year the Grand Ole Opry started. In 1944, Mac began his career as a DJ in in Harrisonburg, Virginia. In 1946, he worked with Molly O'Day, then in 1948 an original member of Flatt and Scruggs' Foggy Mountain Boys, and then in 1949 with Bill Monroe. From 1952-1956, Mac with his band "The Country Boys" recorded several hits for Dot Records including "Jimmy Brown the Newsboy," "Love Letters in the Sand," "The Ballad of Davy Crockett." From 1957-1963, he was an A & R man (Artists and Repertoire) for Dot Records and ran the company's country-music department. While at Dot, he was instrumental in the success of Pat Boone's career. It was Mac who suggested that Pat record the song "Love Letters in the Sand" which became a smash hit for the young singer. In 1958, Mac one of the founders of the Country Music Association (CMA) and its first secretary. In 1965, he performed at the first bluegrass festival in Fincastle, Virginia. In 1966, Mac managed WWVA Jamboree in Wheeling, West Virginia. That was the year that he recorded this album for Uncle Jim's Rural Rhythm Records. He was in fine country voice for songs that also include some uncredited accompaniment with drums, jew's harp, Dobro, harmonica, autoharp, electric bass, and others.

In more recent time, Mac's kept busy with music. In 1990, he was elected president of R.O.P.E. (Reunion of Professional Entertainers) in Nashville. One of the goals of the organization is to build a retirement home for country music entertainers. In 1991, he worked at the revived Old Dominion Barn Dance, Richmond, Virginia. In 1992, he worked at the Willie Nelson Theatre in Branson, Missouri. In 1993, Mac was inducted into the IBMA's Hall of Honor. In 1997, he recorded with "The Groove Grass Boyz." In 2001, Wiseman recorded a duet with his old friend Johnny Cash: "When It's Reveille Time in Heaven."

Songcarriers and musicologists would be particularly interested in this type of archival material. This set of 25 classics is reissued in Rural Rhythm's "Heritage Collection." It contains original mixes from 1966 along with some bonus tracks from the Wiseman master vault archives. Liner notes were written by country music historian Colin Escott based on an interview conducted with Wiseman. For the price and volume, this is an essential collection of mid-1960s Wiseman music for your own library.

Don't expect to hear vocal harmonies, elaborate arrangements or the same level of clarion studio recording quality we hear today. Rather, just enjoy and relive a classic country sound of yesteryear. Most of the cuts span about 2 minutes apiece. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

Even without the fake pops and scratches on the set opener--the charming ballad "Little Green Valley"---this collaboration of titans owns a distinct old-time flavor. Appealing hymns with intricate harmonies accompany lilting cowboy sing-alongs, age-old folk, hard-driving bluegrass, and traditional country songs. It is interesting to compare the different vocal styles of the three legends; despite the differences, sincerity is the common thread. The warmth and intimacy of the informal performances here recall simpler times. Having nothing left to prove in their musical careers, Mac, Doc, & Del are picking and singing for their own pleasure, playing songs that are personal favorites and simply enjoying the company of kindred spirits. Of course, their genuine love for this music actually proves a whole lot. --Marc Greilsamer

4 out of 5 stars Not bad, but:.......2000-12-05

Too much Mac, not enough Doc. However it is worth it just for "New Moon" alone.

4 out of 5 stars Not sure about this one........2000-07-26

No doubt Mac Wiseman, Doc Watson and Del McCoury have contributed so much to the world of country and bluegrass music and deserve to be legends. There were some cuts on this CD that I just couldn't stand to listen to. I did like the cuts that Del sang on, and his son Ronnie is sensational on the mandolin. I'm just not sure this is going to be one of my favorite CD's.

5 out of 5 stars A pleasure each time I listen.......2000-05-03

I find this album a joy, and it remains fresh and interesting each time I listen. The harmonies and instrumentals showcases the great collaboration between the artists. I have been listening to country for about a year now. This CD convinced me that my musical home is in bluegrass. My other bluegrass favorites are "The Mountain" (McCroury, Earle), and "BlueGrass Rules" (Skaggs). If you like them, I think you will like this one as well.

5 out of 5 stars A Gem of a CD.......2000-02-03

I don't know where I've been, I only recently discovered Del McCoury when he was on Prairie Home Companion. I ordered this CD and I was a little put off by it at first, because of the lack of polish. But "Speak to Me My Darlin'" really grabbed me; a simple tune with sparse instrumention sung soulfully by Del. Then the more I listened to the CD the more I fell in love with the whole thing. It has such a purity and a charm to it, it's a good thing I live alone because I've been playing it constantly. "Live and Let Live," "Talk of the Town," "Black Mountain Rag," and "More Pretty Girls Than One" especially are standouts, but the whole thing is great. I have two more Del McCoury CD's on order though which I'm looking forward to very much, after having had a chance to see him and his band in concert recently.

5 out of 5 stars Mac Wiseman Bluegrass.......2003-06-26

Mac Wiseman will go down in bluegrass and country
as one of our great artists of the century. I have
numerous c/d's of his and I can't pick out a favorite.

5 out of 5 stars Probably the "quintessential" Mac Wiseman album.......2002-04-27

If you only buy one Mac Wiseman album (although I can't imagine why anyone would thus limit themself), make this the one. Wiseman is one of those folks you've probably been hearing for years and didn't realize it. As these sounds come off the CD, you'll find yourself saying "oh yeah, that one. I didn't realize that was Mac Wiseman". "Dark Hollow", "Wreck of Old 97" "'Tis Sweet To Be Remembered" are all Wiseman classics that he's recorded the definitive version of. His version of the Carter Family classic, "Jimmie Brown, The Newsboy" is second only to the Flatt & Scruggs rendition. Some of you folks will probably be shocked to discover that Wiseman even did a great bluegrass version of "Love Letters In The Sand", a pop hit for Pat Boone on the Dot label recorded just after Wiseman became A & R head for Dot in 1957. Don't miss this opportunity for one of bluegrass and country music's best voices.

4 out of 5 stars A classic Mac Wiseman album from 1966 (with country band).......2007-01-02

Playing Time - 40:55 -- With over 50 years in business, Rural Rhythm Records has built a catalog that connects many dots from past to present.

I First heard Mac Wiseman when I was Eight years old (It was this very recording that I heard, on an old 8-track tape), and from that moment, I was hooked. I'm 15 now, but enough about me. This is a great album! Mac Wiseman has a warm tenor voice that cannot be equaled, even by the great opera tenors. Plus this album has some great country favorites such as I SAW YOUR FACE IN THE MOON, ROVING GAMBLER, MIDNIGHT SPECIAL, WRECK OF THE OLD '97, and others. This CD is a MUST for any True country fan!

5 out of 5 stars Steel Pulse has an energy that needs to be felt by all........1998-08-15

Steel Pulse permeates the soul. This particular CD is an anthology of their greatest hits and it couldn't get any better. For anyone who has never listened reggae or has, they are just amazing. They represent all that is great in this type of music. What's so amazing about this band is that I believe they could be liked by all. It just the way their music is. They are coming to concert in my area in two weeks and I can't wait to feel their energy and join them in celebration.
