Songs for Car Commercials

About the Artist
Long considered one of Canada's most promising acts, Priya Thomas is a one woman "girl with guitar and beatbox" show. Known for her intense live energy, the show is movement driven, with Priya Thomas hurling herself at the mic while frantically twisting knobs and flailing onstage - a dervish stumbling through digital punk-rock. Priya Thomas is a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who composes on guitar and piano, programs all her own loops and now even records her own material. Her new CD is a cleaver-sharp chronicle of being an "outsider" with cleverly crafted songs about the human spirit and what it means to survive in a materially insatiable world. If you throw together Blondie and Nina Hagen, along with the dirgy loops of Amon Tobin, and South Asian violin samples, you might be looking at an act like Priya Thomas.

"When you invite comparisons to almost all of the female artists who've changed the face of music over the last 20 years (PJ Harvey, Bjork, Kate Bush, Madonna), you know that you're good. When you can invite those same comparisons without ever once seeming derivative, you know that you're great." -Eric Missio (Chart Attack, Canadian Music Week)

Album Description
If Bjork had a platinum Warhol hairdo, combined the dirgy loops of Amon Tobin with South Asian violin samples, played electric guitar and moved like Ziggy Stardust, you might be looking at an act like Priya Thomas. She is a multi-instrumentalist who composes on guitar and piano, programs all her own loops and produces her own material. Her new Cd, "Songs for Car Commercials" is a cleaver-sharp chronicle of being an "outsider". The CD is a collection of cleverly crafted futuristic pop songs about the human spirit and what it means to survive in a materially insatiable world. Defiant and anti-authoritarian, singer-songwriter Priya Thomas represents a new phenomenon; the convergence of cultures in an unpredictable borderless sound.

Priya Thomas is a Canadian musician. Her ancestors are from South India. She grew up playing Indian music before she discovered rock music. These contradictions are at the heart of Priya's art. In her music, you hear strains of Indian music meshing with Sinead O'Connor to produce something distinct from the sources. The opening track "Digging for Gold" is a wonderful blending of these influences. I have been playing this disc constantantly since I got it. I listed it as one of the best of 2002 in an article for INK 19 magazine. When I dj on local community radio, I almost always get calls asking about the disc. Music for Car Commercials is definitely worth checking out.
