About the Artist
Somewhere between the soft sounds of his guitar strumming, the soothing melodies, heartfelt harmonies, and vibrant lyrics we became captivated by Kirby Zhang, and the sincerity of his music. As a toddler Kirby would memorize melodies and lock them in his mind, recreating them on whatever was available to him at the time. At age five he started to explore the white keys of his father¡¯s synthesizer, creating melodies and playing along with the radio at times. Music became a doorway for Kirby when he was nine; his parents were in the midst of a nasty divorce Kirby would often escape to the safe halls of a nearby church in which he spent his hours playing on an old piano. In high school Zhang met Brandon Haynes, a fellow student; Haynes was an aspiring singer and composer and played producer for Kirby during his earlier recordings. They would record their song ideas with a karaoke machine Haynes had and release them to the school. Toward the end of his High school career Kirby formed a band called the Stanleys. The groups popularity grew among the students and Alief school district, however the group was experiencing management difficulties. In late fall of 2002 The Stanleys won the Best of the Best Music Competition and was offered a demo contract by Matthew Knowles (father of Beyonce Knowles) however their management was quick to deny the offer without consulting any of the members. Zhang became devastated, and felt that it may be best to part ways with the group. Instead of forming a new band Zhang took a year to perfect the craft of song writing, demoing, and structuring his songs to make them just right. In fall of 2004 Priceless Possessions was finished, a mixture of pop/rock and acoustic mannered sounds that vividly described the hardships of growing up with such a enormous dream. After only one semester of the University of Texas at Arlington Kirby Zhang dropped out, packed his bags and headed west to Los Angeles in hopes of finding a bigger audience and a better tomorrow. He has hit the open mic circuit, playing at coffee shops, bars, and clubs, in hopes of being discovered. The road is certainly crocked, and misleading at times, but with his determination, dedication, and will to succeed the road ahead screams to be a better place.
