A member of the band Heatmiser, Elliot Smith recorded home demos on any equipment he could get his hands on. His first "solo" album is a cheap four-track home recording that hints at the melodic possibilities Smith would explore in greater detail on subsequent releases. The title track is remarkable but with four songs referred to in sequential order as "No Name #1," "No Name #2," etc. ... the inspiration isn't always fully firing. Blessed with a quiet angelic voice and a lyrical mind that easily transforms the squalid details of everyday life into something worth hearing about twice, Smith stood on the verge of getting it on. With his next, self-titled release, he did.--Rob O'Connor

the "point a" of Elliot........2007-07-24
4.46 stars.
for anybody who even half-way enjoys the one-man-and-a-guitar stylings of pre-"figure 8" Elliot Smith, go ahead and make that collection complete by snapping up a copy of "roman candle". i bought this album for that reason alone and wound-up very much enjoying it.
the opener, from whence the album takes its title, is enough to justify the purchase price, but that's not to say that the rest of the album is anything to simply gloss over. Elliot fans who, like myself, became such because of the "good will hunting" soundtrack will be happy to have a familiar friend along the way in the form of "no name no. 3". also, the sinister swell that "last call" delves into as it comes to a close is pretty ded-gum neat, so be sure to check that out as well.
i only rate this album a 4 instead of a 5 because i DO NOT wish to give the impression that i find it to be on par with "Elliot Smith", so if you are trying to decide between the two of them, hit that other one first. however, if after injesting that one you like it as much as the rest of the Elliot-lovin' free world does, be sure to get ye back out into thine music-gettin' landscape to procure a copy of "roman candle" for yo'self as well. enjoy!
Great Album.......2007-04-17
This maybe my favorite Elliott Smith album next to Either/Or. I would purchase this album with Either/Or if I were just getting into Elliott Smith. It is a very chill album to listen to while driving at night, doing homework, or going to sleep. Elliott's acoustic guitar playing and lyrics are very well arranged. Give it a glance.
beautiful.......2007-03-13
i bought this cd completely on a whim at a local cd store. it took a few listens for certain songs to really sink in, but now i absolutely love it. No Name #3 and Condor Avenue are worth the price tag alone
A glimpse inside the audio diary of Elliot Smith.......2007-03-05
This unpretentious cd is sparse and mysterious as was the late recording artist himself, who died under mysterious circumstances shortly after receiving critical acclaim. I think it is the best representation of Smith, who has other more polished cd's that seem to have somehow missed his essence. This one seems to have been recorded early on, low-fi in a basement or bedroom, and lets you get up close to him without studio intervention. There are many tracks that don't even have bass or drums, just guitars and voice. The tunes are haunting and insecure, but will soon get right under your skin. This is no high-gloss commercial venture, but more like a glimpse inside somebody's audio diary.
Three Cheers.......2006-07-16
Roman Candle has a very endearing adolescence to it much softer than Elliott's later work. An innocent recording of someone's youth.

Great Job, Johnny!.......2007-05-24
How refreshing when an artist comes back well into his career to produce an album that can stand up to the best of his work. This album contains several tracks that pop out as instant Johnny Clegg classics at the first listen, and others that grow on you with subsequent listenings, all with interesting lyrics. Other reviews in this section have described the music eloquently. The CD booklet contains lyrics and translations of key phrases into English when he sings in other languages, so I'd recommend getting the CD rather than downloading. One of the big mysteries to me is why Clegg is not a household-name superstar in the States & Canada. His music is infectious, and his concerts are uplifting and thoroughly enjoyable, with the audience up and dancing through most of the show. I was thrilled when he came to the city near where I vacation for shows in the summers of '04 and '05. Amazingly, neither show was sold out at smallish venues, but the crowds were most enthusiastic and appreciative. What will it take to 'spread the word' about Johnny Clegg after all these years?
Welcome Back!.......2007-04-11
It's about time Johnny came back to his roots! This is an excellent release that just took took took took long... but worth the wait.
Johnny is fantastic!!.......2007-02-22
Johnny Clegg's latest album is wonderful as so many of his albums are.
His music is some of the most uplifting music I have ever listened to.
If you ever have a chance to see him in concert, you wouldn't be dissappointed!
The Johnny we love is back!.......2006-12-20
After 2002's new sound of his "New World Survivor" release, I thought he was moving away from his signature sound (the mix of zulu chanting and rhythms with western pop rock), but his latest is an encouraging welcome back to the sound he perfected in 1997's "Crocodile Love" cd. While I disagree with a previous reviewer that "New World Survivor" lacked any songs with a memorable hook (it had three such irresistable songs: "Colours of Change", "Into the Picture", and "New World Survivor") or that his latest cd also lacks any truly memorable songs. No, this cd is full of songs that I can't sit still to!
The most single-worthy song is "The Revolution will eat its children". If you can ignore for a minute the oddness of the title, it has a catchy rhythm and a very hip "echo" effect on the word "gun", which I don't think I've ever heard in any song before. The song deserves to be the first single released, to remind listeners that Johnny is back in fine form. Other irresistable songs include "Thamela", "Makhabeleni", "Utshani Obulele" (my personal favourite song on this cd), and "Four Box Square" (about the relative sameness of the towns/cities he travels in on tour). The other single worthy songs are "I Don't Want to Be Away" (where he laments about being away from his wife while touring with his band) and "Locked and Loaded" (which sounds like a violent song, but is really about a man making the commitment to marriage). Both songs are quite catchy and would play well on radio, even the rather narrow minded American ones.
In addition to 15 new songs, we get to hear Johnny sing in Afrikaans ("Thamela--Die son trek water") and French ("Faut pas baisser les bras") for the first time. And the classic Johnny sound I mentioned earlier? He has that "ho-hum-oh-hum" chant going on in one of his songs that is easily recognizeable to older songs of his. All of this was missing on his last cd, when he experimented with a new sound (similar to Madonna's post Evita sound). All I can say is, welcome back, Johnny! I never get tired of his "old sound" because he finds ways of making it sound fresh again. If I wanted to hear Madonna-esque melodies, I'd buy her cds, but Johnny has something unique that no one else can offer, so if Johnny no longer offers that unique sound, what are fans left with? So, please support Johnny by getting this CD! And if he tours North America to promote this cd, go see his tour. You won't regret it. It'll be the most energized show you'll ever see.
Johnny is back.......2006-12-19
This is the band's best album in years. It is a return to the mixture of Western and Zulu rhythms, and English and Zulu lyrics that make this group so exciting and get me dancing around the house. What other music makes me think I actually understand Zulu, even though I don't, just because I get the music in my soul? It brings back the excitement of the live concerts and makes me remember why I really, really love this band.
One minor quibble: why are all the pictures of Johnny? I want to see Andy, Barry, Mandisa!

For all the noisy bluster involving plastic barrettes, thrift-store guitars, and caterwauling political catchphrases, Sleater-Kinney have always been pragmatic about their music. The group's self-titled debut got by on ferocity alone. But each successive release has exhibited a dramatic step forward as youthful exuberance gives way to melody and poise. One Beat is the trio's most assured work yet. A jubilant blast of tambourines, theremin, and Corin Tucker's rubber-band vocals usher in the spiky "Oh!," the Strokes' locker-room diffidence mingles with Sonic Youth's angular cool on "Prisstina," and the title track, all urgent wailing and power chords, rumbles with pure excitement. The rest of the album isn't far behind. --Aidin Vaziri

Another extraordinary Sleater-Kinney album.......2006-06-11
Viewed in one way, Sleater-Kinney is one of the most boring bands in the world. Think about it. All they do is turn out one exquisite album after another. To shake things up, shouldn't they turn out a clunker every once in a while? Why do they always have to be so great? If I were to rank in order the six albums that followed their debut (and only album that couldn't be described as amazing), I would rank this in a tie for weakest with THE HOT ROCK. Yet I wouldn't consider giving either album a rating lower than five stars. They really are that great.
ONE BEAT is one of the most polished albums the band has released, definitely the most cleanly recorded. In a way this isn't a good thing, since a lot of the band's appeal has been a bit of messiness on the edges that complemented the rawness of the music. In another way this is an advantage, however, since this is perhaps the album with the most sophisticated musical arrangements. There are even some touches that are very, very unusual for a Sleater-Kinney. For instance, in "Faraway" at one point one can hear an organ playing faintly in the background while in "Oh!" a synthesizer is used!!! And there are even coordinated hand claps. I love "Oh!," which is one of the strongest songs on the album, but at times it really does remind me more of the Go-Gos rather than Sleater-Kinney
Let me be unambiguous: I love this album. But there are some things that almost but not quite make me uneasy. A lot of this centers around Carrie Brownstein. There is no question that she is a great songwriter and a powerful presence as a guitarist, and there is no time I love Sleater-Kinney when they are pounding away with both guitars blazing, Corin Tucker wailing away, and Carrie Brownstein supplementing Tucker with some wonderfully embellishing back up vocals. But more and more Brownstein has taken on lead duties, and the brute fact is that 1) she doesn't have Tucker's pipes and 2) she has some vocal mannerisms that I find distracting. This is most apparent on songs like "Sympathy," another of the albums stand out tracks, where the vocals shift from one singer to the other. By no means is Carrie a bad singer, but Corin Tucker is one of the greatest singers in rock, capable of powerful screaming or Bonnie Raitt-like crooning. This isn't the only band with this dilemma. I like Carl Newman, but have always wondered why Neko Case isn't the full time lead singer for The New Pornographers; he is a good lead singer, but she is something truly special.
That tiny complaint aside (and it isn't a complaint, but just a preference for Tucker as singer) this is a stunning album. I don't know of another band that has been so amazingly consistent over the past decade. In terms of sheer quantity of good music, the only band I can think of that rivals them is Belle and Sebastian, but they have also produced a lot of weak material. I'm still waiting for Sleater-Kinney to turn out their B-level material. They aren't often spoken of as the world's greatest rock band, but based purely on the quality of their output, shouldn't they be so considered?
Let me make my point another way. Does Sleater-Kinney have a bad cut on any of the last six albums? I'm serious here. I recently relistened to all of those albums, and I couldn't find a single cut that I wouldn't willingly listen to again. I'm not sure that I could say that of any other six albums by any band in the history of rock. Nonetheless, a few cuts do stand out for being especially memorable. My favorite cut on this album might be the one that closes the album, "Sympathy." One doesn't expect a song cast in the form of a prayer, but that is what we get here, as Corin Tucker prays for the well-being of her son. If sometimes in their earlier albums their songs don't seem to express the most profound emotions that certainly isn't the case here. The emotions here are a real as they come.
I also love the Clash-inspired "Combat Rock." Sleater-Kinney has always been a political band, even if the poltics has been rooted more in third-wave feminism than global politics, but here they take on the military response to 9/11. When this album came out I was really buoyed by this song. Remember the context. In early 2002 when this came out absolutely no one was speaking out against the US's military actions. We were not yet moving against Iraq; we were finishing up in Afghanistan. I am prouder of nothing else in my life than telling people the week that George W. Bush hit 92% in the approval polls that he would eventually go down as the worst president in American history. But I heard very few people saying the things I was saying at the time about Bush or the direction that we were going in fighting terrorism, which to this day I believe we are failing at because we have misconceived the problem from the beginning (it should never have been called a "war" but conceived as a police investigation, which points towards the correct methods for rooting out terrorists). Anyway, the point is that it was great to hear a song questioning so passionately the purity of US military actions. Their song came out nearly a year before the Dixie Chicks caused such a flap, so the song now seems prescient.
The other song that really stands out for me is "Oh!" despite Carrie Brownstein's vocals and the synthesizer and the "oh-oh-oh" that ends nearly every line. But otherwise the song is musically fascinating. Even if it does remind me of the Go-Gos.
In other words, another boringly spectacular Sleater-Kinney album. You need to get it if you don't already own it.
Too Political.......2006-03-06
I was very pleased to see some of the fire back in this group. They really have not written a ballad that brings out any emotion that I remember, unless you count "Good Thing", a classic. Therefore I really couldn't see how Hot Rock received so much praise as it contained many ballads, the only explanation was the critics were getting on the bandwagon and were forced to write good reviews of their work. I always stuck up for critics because they exposed me to music I never would have heard and many times they championed the interesting releases, but lately I read them and they all are so conditioned to be what they are told they should be it is sickening. Yes exposing us to Sleater-Kinney's first three was incredibly generous, but The Hot Rock just seemed not to deserve the praise it got, the band wasn't maturing they were becoming bland. A couple songs seemed to be leftovers that were nice for completists like myself, but reviewers that championed this one seemed like sheep. All Hands On The Bad One should have gotten love/hate reviews and instead got all middle of the road boring write ups. Now One Beat comes with them playing to their strengths again, but this falls short of their best work. Mainly because people have to share the same philosophy as the political message dictates to really enjoy this CD, also the music seems like it is just going through the motions. I am even a whiney liberal and couldn't get into the lyrics. I am curious how the conservatives insult us for speaking out against the government(America). Especially when they brag about free speech and living in a free country. Then we are told by conservatives if we don't like our government we should move, it seems like free speech is only listened to if it agrees with conservative propoganda. I also notice the conservatives want to take away not only this right, but every other one that conflicts with their idea of right and wrong. Any rule they say they follow should be a law for everyone to live by and the hypocrisy that occurs can easily be ignored. I am glad we didn't question Bush for him starting a war with Saddam, because he looked like the guy we really had reason to attack, Osama. Supporting Bush has really paid off. The world hates us because we are arrogant and feel we have the right to impose our way of thought on every foreign country and if they don't agree we will attack them. We have gotten tons our soldiers, innocent young kids, killed fighting for no reason. We also have lost another war by repeating history and not being able to defeat people that know the tactics necessary to win a war fought on their land. Against soldiers that are willing to die to defeat us. One Beat does give the listener other things to think about, that Haunted House song is the catchiest thing they have done, please tell me this is a metaphor and the girls don't really believe in ghosts. I also love their adrenalin fueled rants. How two girls exchanging screams sounds so good always amazes me. I am back on the bandwagon. I guess my review sucks too, but I think it supports the idea that it is best for a lot of people to write reviews and the listener can get a better idea of what to expect.
Jackpot!.......2006-02-25
So I was downloading music...yeah, shoot me...and decided to download some Bikini Kill. I downloaded a whole album and was listening to it and suddenly, halfway through the album...what's this I hear? A new voice? GOOD MUSIC??? (come on, I may listen to Bikini Kill, but, well, let's be honest. It's not for the raw talent and musical genius). Somehow it had gotten mixed in with BK. So I figured out who it was.
Why have I not heard of them before? I love it. I'm not going to try and classify it, except to say that it's angry-fem-rock-ish...but wonderfully, wonderfully good. It's INTERESTING sounding, fun to sing, melodic, and the kind of music you are dying to hear in concert. It could also be described (with absolutely no anachronistic connotations) by the word "groovy" in that it's groove-able. You want to groove to it.
I'm also obsessed with the title track.
So I got some BK and some S-K. Guess who I listen to all the time? NOT Bikini Kill.
a vast improvement...the singing lessons payed off, corin.......2005-08-16
After buying both The Hot Rock and All Hands on the Bad One, I have to admit my faith in Sleater Kinney was wavering a little bit. I found the Hot Rock to be very uneven: some songs I loved to death, and listened to over and over again, and others were terrible. All Hands on the Bad One was pure pop trash that made me want to retch. So I was highly skeptical when I picked this up in a record store. When I got it home and listened to it, I was so relieved! The opening track reminded so much more of why I fell in love with this band in the first place: the back-and-forth of Tucker and Kinney's vocals, the jangly guitars, and the truly unique lyrics. As I listened further, I found myself more and more impressed by Tucker's new vocal stylings. I've always loved SK, but I have to admit that for a long time I thought Tucker's voice was a little thin-sounding and that she had way too much vibrato. She really breaks out of that on this album, belting out songs like "Light Rail Coyote," a celebration of the Pacific Northwest. My only gripe with this album, I think, would be its overt political message. I love punk and alternative, but I hate whiny liberals bitching about America.

Customer Reviews:
Two tracks I really like.......2007-07-21
The Mission Impossible theme is performed well.
The Fireball theme is actually much improved on this version. I prefer the orchestra and the vocals over the original.
Quantity Over Quality.......2007-01-15
As a musician myself, I know too well that one of the most important ingredients in ANY performance (live or recorded) is passion. The recordings here generally lack the same passion and sheer drama of the originals. Much of the instrumentation has been reduced to a cheezy, thin, plastic synthesized replica. The performances are simply a watered-down lackluster version of the classic originals. If it were not for the sheer volume of tracks compiled here, I would have rated the comp only "one star".
Mediocre.......2006-05-17
The sound quality for this collection isn't much better than the samples offered by Amazon.
One Hundred Greatest TV Themes.......2005-08-06
I have watched almost all the shows that are on these 4 cd's. Many were made before I started watching TV. Most I've seen once or twice before.
Pretty close to original recordings.......2005-07-24
Definitely not as good as the originals. You'll probably notice the slight differences since it's stuff you saw and listened to every week or everyday in reruns growing up, but it's still an amazing collection.

Customer Reviews:
Great Live Performance by Schenker.......2007-06-06
I always find it offensive to see great Schenker material rated at less than 5-stars. This is a great album - not quite SITN I admit, but well worth it at Amazon's prices.
So-so.......2007-03-30
This was recorded shortly before the release of Schenker's second solo album. That points up the two things wrong with this: the band sounds tentative, like they're not comfortable with the new material, and the setlist is drawn almost entirely from those first two albums. That leads to some questionable choices: it opens with the big, inspiring "Ride of the Valkyries" music (uh, that's "Kill the Wabbit", if you don't recognize the name), and then the band comes in with a big, exciting, crashing chord, and you're just dying to hear them tear into "Captain Nemo", and it's an extreme letdown to hear "Armed and Ready" instead. Another odd choice is the piano ballad "Never Trust a Stranger", which surprisingly works very well live, and fits in well with the rest of the tunes because everything is played s-l-o-w. On the other hand, Schenker himself is great, so how bad can it be? And there are a couple of songs here which you won't hear in live versions anywhere else.
ONE NIGHT AT BUDOKAN MSG.......2006-11-21
If are a MSG fan this is the cd to get Michael at his best, great quality recording this cd includes songs from both first 2 albums as MSG excellent live versions of ON & ON,INTO THE ARENA,LET SLEEPING DOGS LIE.LOST HORIZON and more check it out it's worth it!
This is my favorite album ever !!.......2005-12-20
In the past 20 years I have listened to this album over and over and over and over again !!!
Michael Schenker's Pure Flawless Mastery of the Electric Guitar is reflected in almost every single song on this album!!
If you listen to the solo on "Lost Horizons" and fail to rock out, then you cannot call yourself a guitar fan.
Cozy Powell's drumming goes perfectly with Michael's guitar playing.
Gary Barden could have sounded better as a singer, but he still sings well enough to get the job done.
I loovvee this CD !!
Guitar God: Thy Name Is Schenker!.......2005-10-02
I've never heard the hype before about Gary Barden being unable to perform in front of so many people that his vocals had to be rerecorded at a later date. Hmmmmm. All I know is that looking back to the early 80's in the field of metal/hard rock, Michael Schenker was one of the bright spots and One Night At Budokan was the shizzzit! God...I had the double album and listened to it like a million times. Soooo...I guess the bottom line is this: Do you wanna revel in all the bullsh*t facts surrounding this album or do you wanna rock? I choose to rock and I choose Michael Schenker's One Night At Budokan. Is it flawless? What live album is? And that kinda fu*ks up the whole concept of making a live album in the first place, does it not? Live is not perfect, but it's different and it rocks! Schenker is one of the all-time Guitar Gods...along with Rhoads, Van Halen, Iommi, Blackmore, Santana, Malmsteen & Hendrix.... (Sure, there's some I missed, you fill in the rest...)

Customer Reviews:
I didn't even know world music.......2005-05-07
One World is one of our two or three favorite albums. The selection of songs is inspired.
By now too, we've given One World to friends and family. Everyone has really enjoyed it.
Wonderful and Diverse!.......2002-10-06
I got this CD for my birthday and played it immediately. I was instantly floored by the quality and diversity of the music. I love the fact that Russian, Jamaican, Scottish, and African music (just to mention a few) are all on the same CD. It really lets you recognize the similarities (and differences) of music around the world.
It says in the liner notes that unfortunately Putumayo was not able to include Asian or Latin music on this disc, but if you want to hear that music, buy "Music from the Tea Lands" or "Latin Groove" (this in no way makes "One World" less recommended).
I would have to say that my favorite tracks on this album would be "Ohureo" from Cameroon/UK and "Dalshe" from Russia. "Ohureo" is beautiful, haunting, and melodic. The song just flows so beautifully. "Dalshe" is a little less folk-y. The pumping bass, the awesome melody, and everything in general about this song is excellent.
These are songs you would not, and could not, find anywhere else than this CD. BUY IT NOW AND SEE WHAT YOU'VE BEEN MISSING!!!
one world.......2000-11-06
wonderfull cd, with a lot of good and famous artists, like bob marley, gipsy kings, youssou n'dour ... It's music from every part of the world.
Another great title from Putumayo.......2000-07-11
Already own Putumayo's children's music CD. This one is also great! Peter Gabriel, Toure Kunda and Toni Childs are especially good, but all the tracks are well produced and filled with energy. Liner notes are exceptional.
Intro to world music.......2000-04-29
An energetic sampler of world music. An excellent starting point for anyone interested in international pop music, especially the hybrid sounds of Africa and Europe. This music will get you off of your couch. Any age listener will enjoy these vocalists.

It's unclear why this program works so well, but it does. It may be because all three composers resolutely affirmed the virtues of tonality at a time when it was terribly out of fashion, though each did it in his own way. Barber was a genuine neo-Romantic before we had the term to describe him, so his heartfelt and emotional music was simply called "backward looking" while he was alive. Vaughan Williams and Bartók were both authorities on folk song who used the "uncouth vocal utterance of the people" to forge fresh and contemporary musical styles. Robert Shaw, one of the great choral music conductors of all time, plays all three works with a near ideal combination of clarity and intensity, and, of course, the chorus is sensational. --David Hurwitz
Customer Reviews:
Lesser-known Choral Masterpieces.......2005-12-13
A disk of lesser-known choral/orchestral works by great masters of composition are always a welcome addition, and this CD doesn't fail, perhaps giving these works new life and hopefully a new future of performances.
The Danish-born theologian Soren Kierkegaard and his prayers from various writings are the subject of Samuel Barber's Prayers of Kierkegaard. The prayers are very personal, having to do with redemption and God's love, a keen insight to existentialism, and Barber's music expresses it well. While a unified whole, the 15+ minute work is divided into four separate prayers, each a style and a setting different from one another. Barber lets the listener know this is religious music by setting the opening text in chanting men's voices in an old church mode. But when the orchestra comes in, a 20th century declamatory statement changes the mood. Barber again looks to the past with simple contrapuntal choral writings. The second prayer is a supplicatory soprano solo sung by Carmen Pelton. A 20th century chanting chorus, reminiscent of thick Russian orthodox music opens the third prayer. Barber again brings back contrapuntalism and a great dissonant melody eventually dividing into two choruses. The final prayer begins with a wild instrumental modal dance section, and the end brings back the simple chant-like feel of the beginning, and the final, modern chorale ending with a positive outlook. Scored for orchestra, soprano, alto, and tenor soloists, and chorus, Barber's unique, and often intimate compositional styles, shine through here. The motives used throughout are enjoyable, the music creates great drama, and the work is quite inspired. It is very much spiritual and artistically pleasing.
Bartok's Cantata Profana is a different matter. It tells the story of nine sons who were taught nothing but to wander the forest and hunt stags. One day they wander too far into the enchanted part of the forest, only to be turned into stags themselves. Bartok sets this 20 minute work in three parts. The first showcases the double, sometimes antiphonal, chorus in thick imitation and dissonance. The chorus explains the back-story and relays the wandering in the forest, including a rather frenzied rhythmical jaunt. The second section is a feature for tenor and bass soloists, the tenor being the best-loved brother turned stag, and the bass being the father who went wandering looking for them. The father pleads with them, but as stags, they can't go home to their weeping mother. The short third section brings back themes and texts from the first and the second with tenor soloist exclamation. This music is interesting, not as folk-like as I expected, very modern sounding with dissonance leading the tonality. The soloists are required to sing some extreme ranges for the angst of the text and the chorus parts are difficult as well. The demonic chanting in the third section show the unusual harmonies and subject matter, not to mention musical virtuosity, of this very unusual, yet interesting choral work.
Unfortunately, Walt Whitman's poems about war and Vaughan Williams' music of the same vein, will probably never have little meaning for the public. The six movement Dona Nobis Pacem is the most stirring work on this disk, with various perspectives of war; texts by Walt Whitman primarily, some biblical texts, and an impassioned British speech. The Agnus Dei states the suffering and sacrifice of Christ, but ends with grant us peace. Beat! Beat the Drums! is a bombastic march about how war affects all citizens, not just those who fight. Reconciliation is a lush and somewhat haunting song on the tides of war, in a personal perspective. The Dirge for Two Veterans is a procession which builds to a great climax and dies away; the text visualizing a community honoring the passing of two local veterans. The Angel of Death and O Man Greatly Beloved is a magnum opus of contrasting moods, which erupts into a paean of "Glory to God in the Highest, and peace and goodwill to man". Even today, well after WWII when the music was written, certainly well after Walt Whitman's Civil War era's words, these performances of Dona Nobis Pacem is so personal, not a dry eye leaves the concert hall. The disk presents a moving and electrifying performance.
All the works on this disk, especially with the wide range of styles, is performed flawlessly. As always, Robert Shaw's choruses have clean and crisp diction, with good vocal technique. The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra gives these works a Romantic fullness needed, and the soloists are fine as well. While together, the program seems odd, the works in themselves deserve more popularity. A nice addition to the choral/orchestral library.
Samuel Barber's "Prayers of Kierkegaard", Shaw.......2005-09-25
This recording track seems to be lower in quality than most of Shaw's. Both the recording and the chorale singing is of lesser quality than the other selections and most of Shaw's works.
However, I can still recommend this CD overall.
Excellent Chorale Pieces Performed Impeccably.......2005-06-26
Three composers, who don't seem to have a lot in common, are on display here, and yet the cumulative effect is quite stirring thanks to the late Robert Shaw, as he masterfully leads the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chorus in this splendid 1998 recording. Samuel Barber's "Prayers of Kierkegaard" is a powerful chorale work that is almost cinematic in its dramatic effect. Commissioned by the Koussevitsky Foundation during WWII, the composer did not complete the work until 1954. The piece is in the form of a single-movement cantata, of four prayers by the Danish theologian Søren Kierkegaard. Soprano Carmen Pelton has a lovely solo on "Lord Jesus Christ, Who suffered all life long" and joins the chorus for the haunting "Father in Heaven, well we know that it is Thou".
Béla Bartók's "Cantata profana" ("The Nine Enchanted Songs") possesses strong rhythmic vitality in this arrangement, especially the harp glissandos implying supernatural forces at work, and is given a fine reading by tenor Richard Clement and baritone Nathan Gunn providing superb vocal turns as son and father, respectively, in the middle section. The most affecting set is the last, Ralph Vaughan Williams' "Dona nobis pacem", which was composed in the mid-1930's as a warning of the threat of war in Europe. His sources were diverse - the poetry of Walt Whitman, the Bible, the Latin Mass, and from a speech made in the British House of Commons during the Crimean War in the 1850s by John Bright - but the sound is consistently mesmerizing. Pelton particularly shines on "Agnus dei", and the concluding "O man greatly beloved" is awe-inspiring. However, the most impressive passage is the "Dirge for Two Veterans", which effortlessly goes from patriotic wartime fervor to mournful prayer. This is a clean recording with especially impressive singing.
Terrible Recording of the Barber.......2002-01-10
I will disagree with the other reviewers here. The Barber is a wonderful piece, dreadfully and lifelessly performed here. The chorus has no emotion. The recording is unfocused...the strings sound absolutely amateurish throughout. Schenck's work on Koch is much superior, even though rough at the edges; it bristles with electricity, and the soprano is just perfect for the second section.
Evocation of the Spirit (2).......2001-02-25
Following the wonderful Evocation of the Spirit CD (Gorecki, Part, Martin, Barber and Shoenberg) this is an ideal follow up. The twentieth century really did produce some wonderful choral music and although the Barber and Bartok here are not totally consistent, the Vaughan-Williams is great.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent stuff, a must have for underground lovers.......2006-07-27
Illmind makes a reference to him rocking to sleep from Stevie Wonder in the inner sleave. This album is one of few hip hop albums that can rock you to sleep (in a good way). Its so chilled, cool and smooth rapping is flowing throughout. Full of loads of amazing collabos, Little brother are there, Ghostface has some input, Supastition, the Procussions and El da sensei. You can't go wrong when you buy a CD in which the featured rappers are veterans or producers themselves. The beats are full of twinkle bell, motown/jazz, and background vocals which is a recipe for intelligent underground hip hop. If you buy this and don't like it then you haven't got into underground hip hop enough, keep it, leave it a while and you'll love it.
S1 and Illmind.......2006-02-07
This CD is a breath of fresh air for hip-hop!!! I love it. Symbolyc one and Illmind are two of the dopest new producers in hip-hop. This CD also showcases that Texas actually has true authentic MCs, like Strange Fruit Project, K-Otix, Bavu Blakes, etc. I recommend this CD for any real hip-hop head.
great cd but..........2005-08-12
i've been diggin on s1 and illmind for a minute now, however amazon doesn't offer the 'explicit lyrics' version. i just received my copy in the mail and i'm a bit disappointed that all the so-called "bad words" are bleeped out. if i wanted to listen to a radio version i would turn on my radio. its difficult to get into the rhyme skills of these gifted brothas when i keep getting distracted by the censorship. and yes i'm a grown *ss man so i can listen to cussin' if i so choose. other than that the disc is quite exceptional.
ILLMIND IS DOPE.......2005-06-28
Buy this album...Illmind is an extraordinary producer. If you love 9th Wonder beats ( like me ) you'll love this dude. Cop it !

devotional trance.......2004-04-10
I just heard this group in concert last night (4/8/04), and it was awesome. They have a tight groove that's great for dancing. They use interesting instruments from around the world in a tasteful and effective fusion. It's a very multicultural affair. My favorite part was the two beautiful women singing and chanting in various languages, with divine voices and serpentine dancing motions. The band's costumes are also excellent. The music is hypnotic -- repetative bass lines, lots of percussion, echoing flutes and horns, strumming strings... If you're a stoned-out hippie, you'll be especially happy with this music.
