a must have 4 any true nin fan are u ?

5 out of 5 stars Nice add.......2007-04-30

Nice add for any NIN lovers, or anyone that really likes Head Like a Hole since in my opinion some of the mixes on this CD are superior to the original, also you can likely pick it up cheap used.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good for a single.......2005-07-20

Even if youre not a hardcore NIN fan some of these remixes are worth a listen. the terrible Lie mixes & Down in it mixes aren't very good in my opinion, but the Head like a Hole mixes are pretty decent...Check it out, 50/50 chance you'll be dissapointed/delighted

5 out of 5 stars Head Like A Hole!.......2005-07-19

This has the original song and remixes. It is a classic because it is one of the first CD's made by NIN.

3 out of 5 stars A lot of repetition........2005-05-25

The "Head Like a Hole" US single is a rather extensive piece, with five mixes of "Head Like a Hole", two of "Terrible Lie", and three of "Down In It". The material on here is interesting, but due to its rather repetitive nature, it isn't likely this is a CD you'll be reaching for frequently.

The five "Head Like a Hole" mixes, all by Trent Reznor and Flood, are largely similar excepting an instrumental restructuring which we'll get to in a moment. The slate mix is pretty straight from the original, largely changed in that the guitar on the chorus is opened up a bit, the clay mix is the similar to the original as well, but with an extra hi-hat rhythm added to it. Somewhat more interesting (although less successful) is the copper mix, with some extra beats, a few weird edits, a synthy percussion solo and a vocal-over-drum-loop of the "bow down before the one you serve" chant. Unfortunately, its somewhat overlong nature gets in the way of its ability to sustain interest. The soil mix features an extended intro and a nearly guitar-less (club friendly?) mix of the song (they do show up briefly after about four and a half minutes...), I find it to personally be the least interesting on the record as it takes the entirity of the bite away from the piece.

Oddly enough, the lack of guitars works better on the instrumental edit, titled "You Know Who You Are". Essentially a somewhat extended variant of the track (without guitars), this works pretty well, although like most dance mixes, it drags substanitally.

The "Terrible Lie" mixes (also by Reznor/Flood) I find somewhat less interesting-- the sympathetic mix is nearly identical to the album mix, excepting a brief reprise at the end of some earlier lyrics and is largely superfluous. The empathetic mix works quite a bit better, with an emphasis on the whispered chorus vocals, and a restructuring that really lets the song shine. Still, I find it inferior to the album mix and a bit overlong.

Two of the "Down In It" mixes, by Adrian Sherwood and Keith LeBlanc, are quite an improvement (they're also available on the "Down In It" single). The shred mix is like the old 12" extended mixes-- its essentially the album mix with several minutes of additional beats and sampled vocals from earlier in the piece. The singe mix is a sort of dance mix with the vocal largely removed and relegated to a sample. The demo is interesting certainly, with the vocal-over-drum-loop concept taken a bit further, but the sound quality feels a bit degraded and its not as hook laden and engaging as the album take.

Complaints-- with only three songs featured, the material tends to drag, and with the single being ten tracks and 55+ minutes, you feel it. They also left off the opal mix of "Head Like a Hole"-- you need the UK variant of the single for that.

Overall, this is actually an ok, single, but it drags on listen. If you can't get enough "Pretty Hate Machine", then check this one out.

5 out of 5 stars Ms. Battle does it again.......2006-03-29

Ms. Battle covers musical styles from baroque all the way to spirituals on this CD, and excels at each song she sings. My personal fav's are "Frondi tenere...ombra mai fu" "Mein herr marquis" "Vocalise" "Swing Low" "Piangero la sorte mia". One impression I get when I hear this CD, is that Ms. Battle had fun with each one of these songs. She sounds like she is enjoying singing them and is totally relaxed with full confidence in her voice. So many singers you hear sound tense, but not here. It's hard to explain really, but generally, when a singer is struggling and fighting to sustain a good sound or sing artistically, you can sense it. This CD is would make a wonderful sampler for someone new to Ms. Battle's voice. It is a shame, though, that she is such a "diva". Nevertheless, this is a delightful recording and I would strongly recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars A charming, lightweight song recital.......2005-09-18

This recital is a pale shadow of the great one Battle gave with Levine from Salzburg, so I wasn't satisfied with one track after another of pretty, charming singing without deep musicality or committment. battle is capable of much beter. Her fans will be pleased, and that's about all.

5 out of 5 stars Kathleen Battle Takes On Carnegie Hall.......2005-04-04

Every big artist wants to perform at Carnegie Hall, its' a sign of a true career. For Kathleen Battle, this must have been quite a night. This album captures that great night, solely built around her, in which she sang aria after aria in a spectacular showcase. Handel was a specialty of hers, and the lyric texture and coloratura heights are nearly dizzying. She makes it all seem so effortless. Furthermore, Miss Battle was a magnificent French singer- most coloratura sopranos excell in the French repertoire- as Beverly Sills did and as did Madie Mesple. However, Battle always makes me feel mixed emotions. One the one hand, she does have a classic, lyric-coloratura voice that nearly became extinct after the reign of Beverly Sills and even earlier with the likes of Lily Pons and Amellita-Galli-Curci. Battle has a bright, golden voice, capable of sweetness and refinement without hysterical declamation or any unpleasant sounds. It's such a shame she did not behave proffessionally. The stories were true. She behaved like a diva holding a whip! She was ungrateful and selfish and couldn't work well with her colleagues and co-artists. She was always late to rehearsals, left early, refused to socialize or ride in the same car with her other artists and went far beyond perfectionism- she behaved like she was the greatest thing since sliced bread. But for all these shortcomings, we love her voice. Her fans, and yes she has fans, continue to buy her albums even though she has long disappeared from the world of opera that once tolerated her but said enough is enough........

5 out of 5 stars I'd give this CD 20 stars if I could! Sheer perfection!.......2003-12-07

God made the nightingale, and somewhere down the line, he touched a little girl named Kathleen Battle with what he originally gave to that bird from the beginning of creation. I cannot, for the life of me, believe that a voice could be so beautiful. I hear it, I marvel, but sometimes the sheer incredible beauty of this woman's vocal artistry is mind altering and surreal. Even the nightingale must suffer a moment of jealousy when a Kathy Battle tune is played!(This is bordering on blasphemous I know, and I beg forgiveness!) But Kathy Battle is simply amazing! This CD captures her at her best.
I'm not an opera buff by any means, but I love the human voice and great singing. There is not a bad song in the bunch. Like one reviewer, I too, am not a big fan of the spirituals segment, but I have a higher tolerance for it than she..I can still enjoy them for what they're worth.

Just BUY this CD...buy more than one if you can. One for home and one for your car. Believe me, you will not be disappointed.

P.S. Can someone tell me if this Carnegie Hall recital was also filmed and where I can get a copy of it? I cannot find many filmed recitals of Kathleen Battle anywhere. There used to be many at the Metropolitan Library in NYC, but all they seem to have now are her appearances in operas. I remember seeing a Met recital of her in a red gown on the cover of the vhs box, but they must have retired it. Any Kathy Battle fans out there who can help me get a video collection going, I would be most appreciated! (ryanmarcus1@juno.com)

    4 out of 5 stars Lovely.......2003-07-22

Kathleen has a beautiful voice, and it's wonderful to have a CD that includes both traditional opera pieces as well as fun gospel songs. I recommend this!

5 out of 5 stars Even amateur like me says--It's perfect!.......2000-08-05

If you have sung in a choir, then I suppose John Rutter's name won't be new to you. He has composed so many beautiful (hence famous) choral music like All Things Bright and Beautiful, For the Beauty of the Earth and The Lord Bless you and Keep you that make him, I can say, the 20th century master of choral music. With their beautiful tunes and harmony, his pieces are widely sung by school chorus, church choir as well as professional choirs.

Rutter's Requiem is no exception. Just that this time he did even better then before. In the past, his music was sometimes criticized as `pop-like'. But in this work we can feel it, both emotionally and musically, more `deep down' than his pass works. This can be reflected by the serious planned structure of the work. According to the composer, the whole piece resembles an arch-like structure. This is archived through the setting of the mass and also the tunes themselves.

Talking about tune, the tunes and harmony of Rutter's Requiem are absolutely beautiful-which make this piece truly touches people's heart. I can still remember the first time I heard Pie Jesu. That performance was only the simplified version of Rutter's Requiem with an organ+oboe+cello+timpani+flute+chorus combination, but still it made me wept for no reason but simply the music. It really did. It is difficult to describe the mysterious strength of the Rutter's Requiem with words, all I can say is: it is magnificent!

No doubt that Polyphony did a great job in this recording-the control of the choir (esp. the dynamic) is nearly perfect. However, what really makes this recording unique form the others is the choice of the soloists. In this recording they chose Rosa Mannion as the soloist. Personally I know nothing about her, but I have to say she really has a nice strong voice. This makes a somewhat special combination, for the fact that in the rest of Rutter's Requiem's recordings boys or thinner-voice-female soloists were used. With the storng soprano Polyphony's recording can be a fairly new experience to the listeners. I Also recommend the other John Rutter's work included in this recording, especially the beautiful choral work The Lord Bless you and Keep you. Again, it reflects the Rutter's nearly perfect choud using technique.

      5 out of 5 stars Can't Get Enough Kylie?.......2005-01-03

Kylie's "Can't Get You Out of My Head" single is great! "cd2" of the single includes three mixes of the song. I usually enjoy remixes, so this CD was a treat for me.

"Can't Get You Out of My Head" (3:50) is a great pop song and is what got me interested in Kylie's music. I normally do not listen to popular music, but I took an instant liking to this song.

The next mix, "K & M's Mindprint Mix" (6:34) is even better. It still largely resembles the other mix, but is longer and is more dance/techno-like.

Finally, the "Plastikca Mix" (9:26) is a really dance/ techno mix. There is much less singing in this mix and it has a long introduction. Between the three unique versions of the song, there is something for everyone. This was a truly enjoyable single.

      4 out of 5 stars Great single!.......2002-06-29

This is one of the year's most awesome dance/pop singles because it has a killer chorus that you literally can't get out of your head. I already own the "Fever" LP, but I bought this for the remixes. The K&M mix is great, as it juxtaposes Kylie's vocals over a thumping, bouncing bassline, and really improves on the original. The Plastika mix is a little monotonous. The vocals only come on during the middle of the 9 minute track, and even then it is very uninspired. I would give this single 5 stars, except for the fact that the Plastika mix leaves much to be desired. If you don't like remixes, check out part 1 of this single, which contains 2 awesome unreleased tracks, "Boy" and "Rendezvous at Sunset".

5 out of 5 stars Some Glorious and Well-Sung Hymns! .......2006-02-27

I was surprised to read the wide variation of reactions to this CD, which I read whilst re-hearing it. Talk about one man's meat being another man's poison!

Let me say at the outset, I am one who found the disk to be delicious meat, and far from poison. While I, too, was a bit fearful when I saw the number of re-arranged familiar works, I approached them with an open mind, prepared to enjoy them or not as the listening experience unfolded, with no odious comparisons nor particular expectations nor religious purposes in mind. I will speak then of my musical experience listening to the disk.

I enjoyed the music immensely, and was grateful for the provision of texts and translations (in lieu of any other notes about the pieces). I found the variety of cultures, styles, periods, and level of familiarity a very refreshing reminder of the countless ways in which composers of various times and places have approached Christian ideas (for no other religion is represented here).

Let me say a word or two about the individual pieces, then offer a very brief summary.

First, the Rutter hymn "What Sweeter Music" was familiar to me, but I delighted in its sheer loveliness, almost as if it were the first time! I had to play it several times before proceeding. We all owe John Rutter a great deal for his musical contribution to our times.

I was impressed with the beauty and imagination of Stanford's setting of Mary Coleridge's "Blue Bird." Not really a hymn, I suppose, it speaks of joy in nature, reminiscent in basic idea to "All Things Bright and Beautiful," though not musically similar.

The rendering of the Catalan folksong (brought to us originally by Pablo Casals) as a hymn with 7th century Ambrosian text was a welcome chance to re-hear that lovely music, and not as the Christmas carol "El Cant dels Ocells" ("The Song of the Birds"). Higginbottom's arrangement, with harp accompaniment, is very atmospheric and gorgeous.

The setting of Handel's "Ombra Mai Fu" (from his opera Xerxes) was a bit difficult to separate from its original context simply because of its immense popularity; still I managed to suppress those connotations, and found the new topic really not so different, after all. The "Crux Fidelis" text speaks of the holy cross as a "noble tree," while in Xerxes the aria renders thanks to a tree for its shade. The choral arrangement, sung in unison, with string accompaniment is tasteful and musical.

The Bach-Gounod "Ave Maria" is another extremely familiar hymn, but this one is not so much different from its Gounod setting. Higginbottom has simply added a choral accompaniment to the original vocal solo and used the harp to provide instrumental support. The tenor, Ben Hulett, sings very beautifully, as does the chorus behind him, and the balance is fine overall, though some might prefer the soloist to be more prominent in one or two spots.

I was glad to be reminded of Grieg's "Ave Maris Stella," which I had forgotten about, and of his expertise in writing for voice. His most popular works are undoubtedly the instrumental "Peer Gynt Suite" and the piano concerto. Here we get back to original versions again. I enjoyed this, though the intensity of the choral singing may be too much for some.

The "Amen" by Finzi shows a delightful interweaving of voices and some delicious harmonies within its short span (hardly more than 60 seconds).

Grechaninov's "Veruyu," or "Credo" from the important Russian Orthodox Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom brings to us the lovely, mystical chant of the all-male church choirs with their ultra-high tenors and ultra-low basses offering a huge richness of (unaccompanied) vocal sound. This is lovely and devout-sounding music, dramatically presented!

The utterly simple and ravishingly beautiful "God Be In My Head," by HW Davies, is probably alone worth the price of the CD! The choral singing here is absolutely first-rate.

The arrangement of Faure's "Pavane" is one of the more problematic pieces, being again so very familiar to us all in the original flute and strings version. I was rather pleased with the choral arrangement, perhaps perversely, for I have grown a bit tired of hearing the original. The 15th century Latin words seem to me appropriate to the emotional character of Faure's music, being very mournful indeed. (Faure's title is simply the name of a very old Italian dance from Padua, so I don't know if he meant it to be sad.)

The 2 selections from Rachmaninov's setting of an "All Night Vigil" (tracks 11 and 14) present music from the Russian Orthodox church, as did Grechaninov's, and the musical style is quite similar. For a piano virtuoso, Rachmaninov astounds us with his fine choral writing. Listen for the extremely low bass notes at the end of track 11, but don't try them at home: they're really subterranean! Track 14 "Blessed Is the Man" is a remarkably fine hymn with lovely Alleluias at the end of each verse.

Stanford's "Beata Quorum Via" is another expert piece of choral writing, and it is quite beautiful as presented here, a capella, with lovely interweaving voices in varied textures.

The "Song for Athene," by contemporary English composer Sir John Tavener, is a lament for the death of a woman, with words from Shakespeare and the Russian Orthodox funeral service and music very reminiscent of the Russian music presented earlier, except that 20th century touches appear here and there in the form of dissonances which occur suddenly and then resolve quickly back into the predominant, often austere, harmony.

"Mater Christi" is by John Taverner (not Tavener!), a 16th century English composer of church music, much of which is fairly well known today. This is a fine, longish Marian hymn sung a capella in Latin.

Monteverdi provides another Marian hymn whose Latin text is very familiar and much used, being the "Ave Maris Stella." The chorus is supported by organ and chamber orchestra, and all perform well. Very fine music!

Rossini, of operatic fame, puts on his ecclesiastical mantle here to offer a hymn to words of St. Thomas Aquinas, "O Salutaris Hostia," which is appropriately devout in character and as dramatic as you might expect. It's also a lovely a capella hymn.

Messiaen's "O Sacrum Convivium" is, like Rossini's, a hymn which centers upon the Paschal victim as recalled in the holy communion, but this time in the exquisite and piquant harmonies characteristic of the 20th century French mystical composer.

Arvo Part is a contemporary Estonian composer (born 1935) of a mystical character akin to Messiaen's and Tavener's. "O Weisheit," a hymn to Divine Wisdom, is sung in German and has a chant-like quality.

"And I Saw a New Heaven," a liturgical anthem, is the best-known work of the 20th century English composer Edgar Bainton, who is less well known than most of the others here (two of whom--Davies and Stanford-- were his teachers). The English text, from the Book of Revelations, is highly mystical and prophetic, and the music, for chorus and organ, is absolutely glorious!

Though some have complained about the singing and the recording quality here, I don't agree with them overall. There are points where the intensity of the voices in the perhaps overly resonant environment may seem a bit harsh, but such points are relatively few, and I find the many moments of exquisite delight outweigh them by far. Thus I recommend this CD highly for the large amount of musical satisfaction it brings.

      5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2005-12-06

I love this cd. I don't use it for serious listening - perhaps it is too sweet for that as the previous reviewer suggests, and perhaps there are better renditions. All I know is that this cd is wonderful to fall asleep or wake up to - and listening to it never fails to make me feel peaceful and happy. I recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars Like Adding Sugar and Honey to Syrup.......2002-10-10

This disc largely consists of sticky-sweet, bastardized choral arrangements done in a saccharine style. The pieces whose texts are set to familiar "Top 40" classical works are really quite tasteless- Lugebat David and Crux Fidelis being the worst of them.

The recording has been made with a manufactured sound in an unusually resonant space, which has allowed the producer to gloss over a startling number of sloppy entrances, a poor blend, occasional pitch problems, and a shrill soprano section.

Borrow the disc from your library and listen to the transcriptions for the novelty of it- but for more legitimate recordings of the Rutter, the Messaien, Part and Rachmaninov, you'd best look elsewhere.

3 out of 5 stars Good choir but not best choice of music.......2002-06-17

This is my first and, as yet, only recording of the Choir of New College Oxford, and I must say I am not wholly enamored with it. The choir makes a lovely sound and the quality is good, but I just cannot bring myself to enjoy the choice of music itself. I have listened through several times and only a handful of pieces capture my fancy - the Rachmaninov, Tavener, and Rossini, in particular - with the rest of the music simply too romantic and "ordinary" for me. To be blunt, I find the program rather boring. As for the singing, it is mostly beautiful but perhaps a little "too much" for lengthy listening - the vibrato is, for me, slightly overdone in places and the trebles sound a bit shrill and/or flat on occasion. However, I am certainly not going to argue that the quality of this ensemble is anything less than first-class; I would just prefer to hear then performing what to my taste would be a more interesting program.

      5 out of 5 stars Stunning.......2002-05-16

When I first got this album, I listened to only the first three tracks, while I prayed in the morning and the evening. One night, I accidentally fell asleep with the CD still playing, and I awoke to hear Gabriel Faure's beautiful "Lugebat David". Soon after, I listened to the entire album and was blown away by its utter beauty. The voices are perfect, the arrangements luminous, and they create an ethereal mood. I still listen to this album when I pray, for it puts me in the best frame of mind for that exercise.

Among my favorites on the album are: "What Sweeter Music" (Rutter), "The Bluebird" (Stanford), "Song For Athene" (Tavener), "Nyne otpushehayeshi" (Rachmaninov), "O Weisheit" (Part), and "God Be In My Head" (Davies). But, the reason I gave this album five stars is it breathes as a whole: beyond my favorite tracks, every song is stellar. If you own no other choral music, you should own this album

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent single.......2004-09-15

I'm so addicted to "Can get you out of my head", or CGYOOMH(what we fans call it for short). This single is a must for any Kylie fan. The two B sides are great and I really like "Rendezvous at Sunset" the beginning of the song is fantastic. So if you can find this single, scoop it up immediatly!

5 out of 5 stars It's about time she came back.......2003-09-29

Last year, I heard this song on my car radio. After only one minute of hearing it, I fell in love with it. Since then, everytime I hear this song, I krank it up.

"Can't Get You Out of My Head" is a great comeback song for Kylie Minogue. Though her career never faded in Europe or Australia, this still crosses new and revisited territory. She blends pop/dance and techno, making it a great song to keep the dance floor jumping. She proves with her talent that she came back to stay, not to revisit and leave again.

Her other two tracks on this LP, "Boy" and "Rendezvous At Sunset", also have great dance beats. All three tracks have their own unique catchy beats that catches the audience differently everytime. Both were previously released in Europe and Australia a couple years before this LP release.

Fans of Kylie Minogue and/or these tracks should also purchase her album "Fever", which features "Can't Get You Out of My Head". "Boy" is a hidden track in the US album release. This ensemble will give the listener the ultimate Kylie experience.

5 out of 5 stars best pop song in many years.......2003-05-29

when this first came out in Australia/Europe September 2001, I thought if Kylie didn't succeed worldwide with it, she'd never do it. I'm glad it became a phenomenom.

There's not much to say about the track, so I'll talk about Boy and REndez-vous at sunset. both are very retro and a little cheesy, but infinitely better than the awful "give it to me" and "Dancefloor" that actually made it to the Fever album.

B-sides become rare with time, so if you have the chance to get this CD and are a Ms. Minogue collector, buy it.

5 out of 5 stars It's Never Too Late to Review This Single........2002-10-06

As someone who's been following Kylie since her late 1980s, Stock Aitken Waterman years, I was one happy camper when I learned that "Can't Get You Out of My Head" blasted into the US Top Ten. After a disastrous cover of "The Locomotion," Kylie quickly disappeared from the American spotlight while she attained superstardom in the UK. Over the years, she tried to win American audiences back, but with no such luck. Then, years later, came this single, a hypnotic slice of disco minimalism with its undeniable "la la la" hook. Having topped the charts in the UK and in a few other countries, it was poised for similar success stateside. After a long absence, we Americans should be so lucky that we have Kylie back ruling the charts again. "I Can't Get You Out Of My Head" is one of the best and most memorable singles of this, or any other, year.

3 out of 5 stars A century of British art songs to delight those who love them.......2006-06-26

These 53 songs have been collected by Naxos from their extensive acquisitions from Collins Classics, and perhaps other British sources now out of business. There's a steady cottage industry, year after year, producing the typical English art song, which is usually based on folk songs, but even in more modern idioms is profuondly conservative and nostaligic. Half these songs, not to mention half the composers, are totally unknown to American audiences, but the familiar names of Vaughan Williams and Britten represent high quality, and the lesser lights, such as Warlock and Quilter, are mainstays in this repertoire.

I'd challenge all but the most addicted listener to make it through more than ten songs at a sitting, and many of these pieces are tepid, offering comfort rather than inspiration. The singers are among the best, but Graham Johnson and Steuart Beford, who do most of the accompaniments, are lackluster. I know that won't be a popular comment, yet if you compare any of these songs with rendiitons done by Janet Baker, John Shirley-quirk, and most recently Bryn Terfel and Ian Bostridge, you immediately notice how much more intensity and drama is pesent than htis colleciton reveals.

Tired of the Robert Shaw Chorale etc.? Rest your ears on this. If the Coventry Carol as sung here doesn't give you at least a mild case of goose pimples with its perfectly executed dissonances, something's wrong with you. Bring out the groaning board for the festive Boar's Head Carol, and tap along to the synchopations of Gaudete and Riu, Riu Chiu. There's a wide range of feeling in these carols so be prepared to experience quiet solemnity and rousing fun and everything in between while listening to this CD.

5 out of 5 stars The most beautiful music--and not just for Christmas!.......2002-05-02

If you like Medieval and Renaissance music you will absolutely love this CD. I bought it as a Christmas CD years ago and I listen to it year around. The harmonies are beautiful. I have given it to friends for presents. I have CDs of music from this time period but this is my favorite. I very highly recommend it.
