Since bursting onto the charts and into national consciousness with 1998's sophomore album, Big Calm, Morcheeba have carved a niche as purveyors of evocative nuevo-lounge and dreamy ambience. While 2000's Fragments of Freedom saw the South Londoners' first tentative step out of the "coffee table" pigeonhole, Charango is the sound of them relaxing, infusing influences such as hip-hop, country, and cinematic scores into a joyous blend of humor, romance, and soothing melancholy. Vintage moments like the lush lethargy of "Slow Down" and the string-laden single "Otherwise" share space with interesting collaborations. Lambchop frontman Kurt Wagner lends his achingly emotive vocal to "What New York Couples Fight About," while Slick Rick's dulcet tones flow through "Women Lose Weight," a tongue-in-cheek tale of a husband driven to murder by his overweight wife. Adventurous and inspired yet dripping with Morcheeba's trademark languid rhythms and tranquil melodies, Charango is at the very least a return to form and arguably their best work to date. --Christopher Barrett

Smooth sounds, uplifting vocals.......2006-12-17
The Morcheeba album I'd recommend to anybody... Perfect for winding down
Skye is gone......,.but Morcheeba is still kicking along.......2006-05-26
Skyke Edwards IS gone....which is undeniably sad. She had a voice that melted your ears and heart, and really carried the songs home. Ross and Paul Godfrey STILL provide excellent beats and rhythms, however, and the new substitute for Skye, Daisy Martey, does more than an acceptable job with the vocals. She's clearer, and though I don't like her voice as much, she's still got the soul required to carry these songs through the ether to your head.
I just found that out Daisy was replaced for live performances, by Jody Sternberg. I don't think the brothers ever truly found a replacement for Skye- my aunt lives in D.C, and she's seen this crew a few times, and she has the opinion that Skye was probably the best- but the beats are tight on this album, same as on "Trigger Hippy"- so the debate over vocals is really a personal preference. I personally like Charango. They bring in a few new rappers- Pace Won does his bit on the title track, and a few others, like Slick Rick (on Women Lose Weight) does an ok job. I still love the Brother's beats, as always. They really make this album.
It's a different Morcheeba, but give it a shot. "What New York Couples Fight About" is a great track, and "Undress Me Now" really highlights Martey's smooth voice. "Public Displays of Affection" has possibly the best beat in a electronica song I've heard in a while. "Get Along" almost had me believing Skye was still there. *Sniff. Oh well.
Not a bad record, by ANY means.
Groovy, chill out perfection!.......2005-10-06
`Charango' was my introduction to Morcheeba and after getting (and loving) this, I went on to get their greatest hits `Parts of the process'.
Morcheeba are UK trip hop/electronica trio, in a similar vein to Portishead and Lamb. Their style is a mix of fusion, blues, and funk with strings, guitars, keyboards, beats and scratches.
Opening track `Slow down' is a mellow, dreamy song with wind like effects and lead vocalist Skye's sultry clear-as-glass vocals. Great guitar! Next is the string swathed `Otherwise' with some delicate guitar. `Aqualung' takes you on a musical swim with its delicate keyboard, guitar and scratches, and ghostly backing vocals.
`Sao Paolo' starts off with some country sounding guitars which give way to a slow, lush tropical sound with ethereal vocals. `Charango' is a fusion jam with some spoken/rapped verses from guest Pace Won.
`What new York couples fight about' is a dreamy, movie like song with spoken verses from Lambchop's Kurt Wagner, and Skye harmonizing and singing the second verse. Very atmospheric.
`Undress me now' is a lush, ghostly sounding guitar ballad. `Way beyond' with its wind like effects is a melancholic ballad with a horn laden chorus.
One of the highlights is the hilarious, groovy `Women lose weight' featuring rapping from Slick Rick. The lyrics tell the tale of a man who wants to do off his fat wife so he can be with his secretary. Morbid and funny, and a very 70s soulful chorus.
The haunting `Get along' features Pace Won rapping, and is a mellow, bubbly, dreamy midtempo retro sound with Skye sounding a bit like Debbie Harry. Fantastic!
`Public displays of affection' is more upbeat but still delicate, and closing track, `The great London traffic warden massacre' is another rich fusion jam. Everything in its right place. Awesome!
Impressive! I like it.
Typical Morcheeba..........2005-05-29
Beautifully chilled and addictive music offset by quirky and cheeky lyrics with half an eye on the famous wry sense of British humour. A beautiful album that doesn't take itself too seriously. I had the good fortune of buying the limited edition CD which features a bonus CD of all the tracks in acoustic version, this CD feels like being trapped in a 1960's/70's spy movie; it's every bit as excellent as the original.
Really, Really Good.......2005-02-28
Morcheeba is one of the best chill/lounge artists I know. Although I haven't heard some of their other albums, I'd be willing to bet this is best. Every single track is sooo good! You can put it in without having to skip once. "Slow Down" is truely fantastic, one of my favorite songs ever--from any artist, but "Otherwise" is also fantastic, along with "Aqualong" "Undress Me Now" "The Great London Traffic Warden Massacre" and even "Women Lose Weight" although the lyrics speak of a man killing his wife because she was too fat, lol... but don't worry, even with silly morbid lyrics Morcheeba pulls it off flawlessly.
Overall, this is one of the best albums I've bought in a LONG time. There aren't a ton of tracks, but with ALL of the songs being good, you'll find quality is way better than quantity.

Most record stores don't have a section labeled "Andean Jazz," but if TataMonk, a wonderful North-meets-South collaboration between guitarist Alex De Grassi and Chilean-born flutist Quinque Cruz, catches on, they may need to make another genre heading. TataMonk sets de Grassi's jazz-inflected acoustic guitar pickings and Cruz's Andean flutes and charangos (Andean stringed instruments) against the delicate jazz trio backdrop of pianist Michael Bluestein, bassist Jon Evans, and drummer Dan Foltz. It's a delicious cross-cultural pollination that successfully mixes traditional Andean melodies and instruments with jazz rhythms and harmonies. Fans of de Grassi's popular Windham Hill solo guitar recordings won't be disappointed, as his distinctive fingerstyle guitar work is happily in the forefront through most of the recording. But TataMonk stands out because of the ingenious and unusual context in which de Grassi places himself. As he explains in the liner notes, the wind instruments played by Cruz are traditionally only heard by themselves, and the juxtaposition of the traditional Andean folk melodies with de Grassi's plucked guitars and the jazz trio backing makes for a beautifully unique sound. On pieces like "Alba," a traditional Ecuadorian melody (here enhanced with odd-metered improvisations), and "Akamani," in which pipe flute melodies meet free-floating jazz swing rhythms, it's clear that de Grassi and Cruz have found a compelling musical blend. --Ezra Gale
Customer Reviews:
The Andes got the blues.......2001-10-02
The first thing I thought when I first listened to this CD was that I couldn't decide whether it was transporting me to a cool smoked filled jazz club somewhere in New York or to the fresh pungent mists of the Andes and then I realized that it was actually taking me both places at once! What a trip!
I think that in this CD one could find so many different moods and so many different atmospheres, the joy of the fiesta as well as the quiet melancholy of the days gone by, the rush of a flight over the highest peaks as well as the peace of just being still and allowing oneself to be embraced by music...and what music! The old and the new, tradition and innovation greet each other in the perfect blend, in which the whisper of a flute marries the tingle of a jazz piano and everything just sounds totally new and totally unique!
I feel privileged to have been allowed to enter the mystical world of Mr. De Grassi and Mr. Cruz!
Tata Monk.......2001-02-02
Traditional andean music and jazz may sound like a clumsy blend, but the mix really suceeds on Tata Monk, lending a fresh perspective to both genres. When you listen to Tata Monk, you can simulataneously envision yourself in a smoke-filled basement bar with a lone piano player or gasping for breath atop an Andean peak, but the music doesn't suffer from a split personality and does both genres justice. The whole effort sounds fresh and complete, carving out a sound quite different from the genres I have to resort to describe it. It sounds truly new and different- Tata Monk always draws a lot of people into my dorm room whenever I play it. Pop this in at your next quiet party and you'll feel much cooler than your friends with their Buena Vista Social Club spinoffs and 40 year old jazz reissues. Its a very beautiful work.
The Coriolis Force in Full Effect.......2000-10-05
I've been a long time fan of Alex de Grassi's guitar work and was quite intrigued to check out this new collaboration with Chilean instrumentalist Quique Cruz. Tatamonk, of course, finds de Grassi in top form but, much to my surprise, is also filled with a whole array of exotic Andean instruments such as charangos, kenas, kenachos, antara, toyos, ronroco, rondador and sikus. Piano, bass, drums and brass compliment all of these instruments and the results are scintillating! This CD has a whole array of soundscapes from "Auscencia" which incorporates a breathtaking melody to "Alba" which has a smoky bluesy feel to it to "Sanchaly" which is a tour de force that unites traditional South American rhythms with contemporary jazz improvisation. All in all, Tatamonk is a tasty fusion of North meets South.
Good stuff!.......2000-09-30
As I listen to this album, I'm transported to another place.
This is a terrific record, right in tune with the millennium.
Jazz with a south american flavor - very worthwhile.......2000-09-28
Fantastic music - an appealing combination of jazz and South American rhythms - the mix of instruments and sounds is unique. I really enjoyed the rich textures they produced. These musicians blend their musical and cultural heritages to bring us a very special CD and it's one that I'll be playing for a long time to come.

Andean/Caribbean Beats.......2004-11-17
Konrad Rhee's BLUE SEA DREAMS uses guest percussionist Brent Lewis (of Australian fame) to blend Native American influences from the USA with the sounds of both Andes and Caribbean beats to create a truly world music feel.
Within the same song you'll hear essences of the American Southwest, Pacific Northwest, Caribbean, and even African instrumentation: all blend together, held by a subtle yet unifying percussive beat, to create a melodic, rich atmosphere reminiscent of soft rock and new age.
