Prescient Songs.......2007-05-27
I am listening to this album now. I have owned it since it came out and always thought that it was panned by idiots. The 'swing' feeling in the syncopation of Helmet compositions was best employed on this album. 'Meantime' was great, but a few songs went on too long (e.g., "turned out"). The lyrics of this album, not always Page's strongpoint, were the best ever composed in all albums to date, especially the before its time "Driving Nowhere", which I am suprised hasn't been used and written about and reevaluated given the political incarnations the West has encountered with the Middle East and the peak oil issues (not to mention it has the most balls out guitar solo of any rock song in the last 25 years).
Their Best.......2006-09-24
I personally thought this was their best CD. Dark, and rugged. Thick production with vocals a bit in the background. Better than the 2 cds since reforming as well.
One of my top ten metal albums of all time!.......2006-09-21
If you are a heavy metal fan, or even a music fan with the desire to create new synapses with a truly great disc in the genre, then stop reading right now and get this disc, but don't give up after a couple of listens because you will not have the new synapses yet.
This is the best Helmet disc hands down. What is a shame is that many have not heard this undiscovered gem. Many Helmet fans had already moved on to other bands by the time this one came out. And others have dismissed it right off because of a change in the vocal styling that they were previously used to. Big mistake! This is a truly great "HEAVY" metal disc that should be in everybody's collection.
Unjustly dismissed.......2006-02-06
Most long-time Helmet fans (and I count myself as one), when this album was released in 1997 pointed to what they saw as flaws - a concious effort to make the album accessible, a (slight) tempering of the ferocity the band displayed up to and including "Meantime," and the simple fact that they didn't remake the same album over and over. Guess what? "Aftertaste" might be their most consistently enjoyable disc.
While I pretty much enjoy any and all of Helmet's albums (okay, "Size Matters" isn't that great...), I can ALWAYS throw "Aftertaste" in and get into it. The songs hit with the melodic sensabilities of a band like Foo Fighters without losing the crunch Helmet was known for. I think this set of songs stands out more than their breakthrough "Meantime" or their older material, generally favored by fans that want to put forth the image that they weren't late to the Helmet party. The drums on this disc are particulary noteworthy, with John Stanier turning in his always-reliable hard-hitting drumming, this time augmented with better production. The songs (all of which, I think, were written by Page Hamilton) are better than anything he's written before or since, minus a handful of tracks. The lyrics are better than anything before or since - take lines like "I'd rather be insulted by you than someone I respect" for instance.
I know this review will irk some long-time fans, but it's time to hang up your elitist attitude and admit that just because a band breaks through to the mainstream, it doesn't mean their best work is behind them.
Helmet as Jawbox?.......2004-11-18
Helmet officially loses all military value on this one. This Is better Than .....yawn..... Betty, (Besides The Song Milque Toast). I wish Page sang on this album instead of J.Robbins. Also, John Stanier started using drum sticks instead of hammers on his kit for this one. It's Ok. Not very original.

Product Description
This is pure corn-fed discontent. Former Iowa resident Arecee releases his second record, "Beating a Dead Horse", under NYC's Collekt Records in Brooklyn, New York. His dark melodic beats and thick delivery are a refreshing alternative to today's bubblegum thug rap and purist hip-hop. On the track titled 'Breathe Deep' we hear a glimpse of a tragic past romance gone sour while the up-beat 'Round and Round' features hip-hop heavyweight Supastition. In 'Life is Cartoons,' Arecee proclaims that "hip-hop is stupid"; after watching MTV, I couldn't agree more. Lush self produced beats and deeply personal lyrics make this release a breath of fresh air in today's copycat music industry. Arecee's first release, "Direction for Children" featuring Sage francis, is currently in stores.

quit being cheap and buy the record.......2004-11-12
if it walks, talks, and quacks like good hiphop well it must be. don't even think about it. just buy it. arecee's second official release shows what hard work and dedication bring to the struggling sound of current hip POP. if you need respite from the inexplicable crap flooding the scene and stinkin up the charts, this is your album.

Aftertaste.......2002-01-20
Each time I listen to this CD the more impressed I am with The Truffles & their musical excellence & insight! Alaska has some great talent & this is no exception. My friends & I are eagerly awaiting the band's tour in South Central Alaska... *Peace* from an avid fan. Take care :-)
Great easy listening.......2001-09-15
This was a completely random pick for me. I just happened across it and decided to give it a listen.
I was really surprised at how good it is, for a band with so little exposure at least. Great catchy tunes with good lyrics and great 'Cranberries' sound. Thankfully, the songs don't get on your nerves like the incessant whining of the 'Cranberries', but rather are original and well composed.
If you like female folk artists, this is a great pick.
Excellent Album.......2001-02-13
Excellent album. Upbeat songs Easy to listen to pop/folk style.
You will not be disappointed.
Delightful!.......2000-08-16
Thanks you guys...I found this entire album very easy to listen to! My favorite tracks include: Chained, kaleidoscope eyes, It's A Lie and Clear As The Light (which I've heard before)...but every song on the cd is well worth listening to, and I intend on doing so and buying several copies to share with some friends!
A very good CD, five stars.......2000-07-04
This CD is wonderful, I highly recomend it to everyone who likes music.

Pfolkadelicious.......2006-02-19
I caught Herriges's acoustic set at the Milwaukee Holiday Folk Fair last November (2005), where he performed many of the tracks featured on "It Plays Me." Although often drowned out by the impossibly over-amplified Asian drum corps set up directly across the stage from which he was performing (note to Holiday Folk Fair: What were you thinking?!), Herriges's mastery on guitar (and bouzouki) was nonetheless breathtaking. Herriges bills his musical style as "Eclectic Acoustic Avant Chamber Rock with an Eastern Pfolkadelic Aftertaste"; a description that one could perhaps blow off as New Age marketing schlock. But Herriges is no snake-oil salesman selling pseudo-Culture... his is an artistry that seamlessly weaves contemporary, classical, and world-music influences together with stellar craftsmanship, erudition, reverence, and respect. One can hear-and feel-in Herriges's songs his deep love of the music by which he's inspired.
Although I saw Herriges perform solo, the album features guest artists (playing tabla, pipa, and a host of other interesting percussion instruments) whose likewise-stellar contributions to Herriges's compositions are tasteful, appropriate, and absolutely luminous. If you're looking for something fresh, original, and authentically eclectic-THIS IS IT!!!
Excellent eclectic hard-to-put-a-label-on-it music........2005-08-29
An excellent CD with a steady eastern-tinged flavor without being totally beholden to the sound. I often have it on in the car and it works on me like yoga - both relaxing and invigorating at the same time - perfect for mediating any movement towards road-rage! For example, 'Ashura' has a great bouzouki-driven rythym that always gets my foot tapping, and the interplay with the percussion is wonderful. One of those songs that builds up and then releases just perfectly. 'Ashura' is then followed by the cerebral 'Particles and Waves' (an excellent display of Greg's hybrid fingerstyle-guitar talent) and the mystic 'Ikona'. By the end of this series I always feel the urge to murmur "Nameste".
There are a wide range of instruments on display here, with Greg playing both a Taylor guitar and a bouzouki, while other artists play tabla and Chinese pipa.
I live in Minneapolis where this artist lives and plays and have been catching his gigs for the last year or so. He and Troy Berg (on assorted percussion instruments - his usual "duo" partner) are a great show. If you like high-quality music that is hard to put into a category, played by real musicians, this is for you. My only regret is that some of Greg's other tunes that he plays at gigs are not on this CD, but here's to looking forward to the next CD!

Product Description
Schism is the debut CD release from San Francisco Bay Area rockers Sofajunkie. With wry political commentary, unbridled angst and a touch of humor thrown into the mix, Sofajunkie explodes on the scene with a tight collection of finely crafted rock melodies. This is not just another super polished recording that gets lost in the din of mainstream radio. The guitars growl, the bass thunders and the vocals command attention. With the force and power of a NASCAR pile-up, Schism is hardcore driving music that gets the lead out and sends you into overdrive.
