4 out of 5 stars Great Mod-Punk.......2005-11-13

I'm pretty new to The Jam, but I knew that Paul Weller was considered a Modfather, and being a Mod, I figured I should check them out. This is a really good CD. I had always heard that All Mod Cons was an essential album, but I actually prefer This is the Modern World. It's kind of like the Clash minus the reggae, plus the Kinks. It's good music and it suits me just fine. If you like a little pop in your punk, check out the Jam.

5 out of 5 stars Some people are just too ignorant to be embarrassed.......2005-04-16

"Now I'm pretty sure it's actually about "politically correct" liberals like the Clash and THEIR effect on Britain." - says Scott McFarland (below). This is undoubtedly the biggest pile of crap I've ever heard, whether about the Jam or the Clash. And yeah, I'm English and I don't want to be anti-American but Scott you're an idiot. I'm into both these bands, have been for years. But then I've also heard No More Heroes by the Stranglers described as their best ever album ... er no actually. Try Rattus Norvegicus, or Black & White. Anyway back to this CD. The Modern World,in common with No More Heroes, and Give 'em Enough Rope, suffers from the second album syndrome - good enough albums in their own right but inevitably compared to and failing to live up to classic first albums. Even though In The City was, let's say a little naive. All Mod Cons is the album that well and truly set the Jam on the road to greatness. It's always been my favourite album so perhaps I'm biased. It's also the one with the memories, if you know what I mean. If you don't, I feel sorry for you. Anyway. Great band, great album. If you don't buy it, beg, borrow or steal it, and when you do - play it to death.

5 out of 5 stars Undeniably Great Album.......2003-09-06

The Jam, even at their worst were one of the greatest British bands of all time. All Mod Cons is The Jam at their best. Starting out with a tour-de-force of classic hits, and only slowing down for the sincerely beautiful "English Rose," the first half of this CD takes no prisoners. Not losing any momentum afterwards whatsoever, the album barrels into classic song after classic song and closes things with "Down in the Tube Station at Midnight," quite possibly the best example of the Jam's undeniable ability.

4 out of 5 stars Great Passionate Rock Music.......2003-01-25

"This is the Modern World" finds the band loosening the reins on their sound, opening things up a bit and moving away from any punk orthadoxy. The results are impressive. By my count, about half the tracks here are well-written and pretty timeless. One of the best is "Standards". I used to hear it as an overly-melodramatic song about the effect of right-wing fascists on Britain. Now I'm pretty sure it's actually about "politically correct" liberals like the Clash and THEIR effect on Britain. "Life From A Window" is an especially beautiful song. The band and Weller are developing their style; big perfect guitar riffs are in evidence, slick energetic playing is well in evidence, and Weller's vocals cut across the music with a healthy degree of soulfulness and traction.

"All Mod Cons" was a big hit album in the UK, but impresses me less. Weller's songs here just aren't all that great, to my ears. Still, there are moments of greatness. Check out the creeping guitar figure at the heart of "Mr. Clean", which seems to have inspired Kurt Cobain and "Come As You Are". Check out the killer riff of "Billy Hunt". Check out the adrenaline rush of "A Bomb in Wardour Street".

5 out of 5 stars Poignant lyrics, tight songwriting, hard-rocking.......2001-05-24

Many people compare the Jam with the Clash, and there are some parallels. The Clash were probably a little more flamboyant, daring and agressive, while the Jam were probably better musicians, with a bit of a more subtle take on things. Also, whereas the Clash drew on reggae and ska, the Jam drew more on soul and 60's rock. Still, like the Clash, the Jam just wrote so many well-crafted, hard-rocking, touching songs, with intelligent lyrics that covered a wide range of subjects, and without much musical excess. Also, I think the great thing about Paul Weller's lyrics with the Jam is that he really makes you think about the questions he's asking--and he doesn't offer you easy answers or slogans that look cool on a t-shirt. What's the proper balance between maintaining your ideals, and doing what you have to do to live in the real world? That's something everybody has to answer for themselves--the important thing is to think about it. These two albums are both great, with The Modern World perhaps being slightly harder, and this is just a fantastic collection of songs. It's so sad that almost no new bands that are popular today picked up the mantle from bands like the Clash and the Jam. Whereas these bands drew from the best of rock history to form something new, personal and exciting, it seems like most of the rap/rock and boy bands have never heard of the Clash and the Jam, let alone any of their precursors, like 50's rock/rockabilly, The Beatles, Who, Stones, Dylan, Marley, Kinks, etc.

5 out of 5 stars Youth anthems delivered at breakneck speed!.......2006-06-30

Youth anthems delivered at breakneck speed! Years ago I read a review of the Jam and someone wrote that line--I forget who it was, though. Nevertheless, while we in the US had Donna Summer and the Bee Gees, the kids in the UK had the Jam. How disappointing for us. As the Jam never made it in the US, they never got any airplay, nearly no one knew of them, and it was VERY difficult to find their records. I did find "Modern World", though, and fell in love with it right off. The fast pace and good rockin' were what I liked. Some people have criticised this album as being a collection of leftover songs. I didn't care, the group rocked! I particularly liked "London Girl", which was a bit more pop, but it moved, and "Midnight Hour." These guys took that old R&B song and turned it into a real rock n' roll classic.
If you want an album that really rocks, get this one. The songs are just as enjoyable as they were almost 30 years ago. One caveat, the CD is missing a song that appeared on the LP--"All Around the World", which I think is one of the Jam's greatest songs.

5 out of 5 stars One of the 2 best JAM records ever with In the City ie their early stuff.......2006-01-12

I've met folks who weren't born until the 80's and have only heard later JAM. You gotta hear the first two albums, this being the second. There's classic JAM songs on it as great as any they ever did and there's no 'approximating Motown' sound on this.
'The Modern World' is so snappy, it stands the test of time magnificently.
I've always enjoyed 'London Traffic', very energetic.
The vocals on 'In The Street Today' are some of my favorite by the JAM. Generally, how well they interweave their trio is a marvel. GREEN DAY, NIRVANA and the JAM really show that with three guys you can make total songs that are fully formed and, that it doesn't happen that often. URINALS/100 FLOWERS and the MINUTEMEN also proved it beautifully.
'I Need You (For Someone)' reminds me that the JAM really isn't a punk band at all. Mod I guess and the occasional love song sorta proves it. Very nice.
'Here Comes The Weekend' is lyrically so applicable to us workin' stiffs. I cherish such a song whenever I can find it.
'Tonight At Noon' is a prime example of their harmony skills without ever bein' sappy or sugar pop.
If only they did this sort of cover job of 60's songs:'In The Midnight Hour'. Now I could listen to that all day. Just keep away from the horn section boys (later albums) though I love horn sections generally, the wilder the better (Ray Charles' 45 Great Songs 2xCD has some incredible blarin' horn songs).
Anyone who says this is a weak album, including the band, is bonkers. For me, and probably a buncha other punx, the earliest stuff is the best for the JAM and this is right in there. Go get 'em. chrisbct@hotmail.com

5 out of 5 stars Under rated greatness!.......2005-09-08

I don't know why everyone (including the band themselves) consider this the Jam's weakest LP. I think it's their second best effort (right after the masterpiece "Setting Sons"). The songs are more focaced and melodic than on "In the City". Plus, "Modern World" rocks out a lot more than "All Mod Cons" (which is also a great album). True, at the time, this LP wasn't too well received- it was recorded and released only MONTHS after their debut. It was thought to suffer from "second album shortage"- a common problem among late 70s punk bands. (The same was said for the follow ups of the Damned, the Dead Boys and Slaughter & the Dogs- all great albums today.) Even if you're not a hardcore Jam fan give "Modern World" a chance... right after "SEtting Sons"!

3 out of 5 stars Their Weakest Record.......2005-02-04

Sandwiched between two of The Jam's very best records (In The City and All Mod Cons) and featuring a batch of mostly half-realized tunes, Modern World is basically a let down. Not a bad album so much as a hastily assembled collection of b side-worthy material that never really takes off. Buy every other Jam album first (yes, even The Gift).

4 out of 5 stars Not Always Given It's Due Credit.......2001-02-26

As many are quick to point out, this album pails in comparison to the band's debut "In The City". That aside though, the album really isn't that bad. It's got a great amount of energy, and though the writing isn't as focused as other Jam albums, Paul & Co. still manage to knock out a few good tunes. Not necessarily there best, but definately not bad compared to so much else that was out at the time.

4 out of 5 stars excellent 2nd wave mod overview.......2005-07-08

Anagram records put out a 6-disc series of Mod singles/rarities (from the '79 to '83 era) called This Is Mod Vol. 1 thru 6. These aren't available domestically, but this handy little comp from Cleopatra is. It samples the best of the first 5 discs (because the 6th is strictly American mod, which is awful and pointless) and does such a good job that you may never need to pick up the actual 6-disc collection. Just listen to the snippets of the first 5 songs on this disc and you'll hear great neo-punk/power-pop songs that any Oasis or Jam fan will love. Anagram actually has their own import This Is Mod 20-song sampler from their original box sets, but the track listing is completely different (and in my opinion, inferior.) And incidentally, this compilation is the 3rd disc of The Mod Box box set from Cleopatra (with "100% British Mod" being the 1st 2 discs, which results in some duplication.)

      3 out of 5 stars A Mediocer Revival!.......2000-08-04

This compilation celebrates the Mod Revival of 79'-83' in a incompleate way. The CD is missing the scene's top 3 bands....the Jam, Squire, and Secret Affair. Although I have to give it props for showing these "Jam wanna-bes" all on one CD that are never played on the radio....ever! I would only recomend this CD to the really dedicated mod fans. These bands sound as if they were Oi bands that simply got into the Mod Revival craze. Sure...there are some really good tracks on this album like the uplifting intro of "Opening Up" by the Circles, the dancer's anthem "Can We Go Dancing" by the Amber Squad, and the pumped up R&B/Punk melodies of "On the Streets Again" by Long Tall Shorty, but overall this compilation fails to show us a decent look at the WHOLE revival. I would recomend the compilation "On Target" for anyone who is interested on the 2nd Wave Mod scene. Thank You.

4 out of 5 stars Doesn't Have Stiff Records Version of "Maybe Tomorrow".......2005-10-04

Hi, when I was 16 I was really getting into the new wave/punk/ska scene and it all revolved around the British bands for me. I saw a bunch of them in medium size venues in New York City, and it was a great scene. I never saw the Chords, and the name never connected for me till just recently when I yearned to find the music I used to listen to in 1980 but had lost (ex-girlfriends keeping my record collection!) and started to do some internet sleuthing (isn't the internet great!). Well one song I had burned into my memory cells because I would play it loud as hell over and over was "Maybe Tomorrow". I had it (the only Chords song I ever owned till I bought this cd), on a Stiff Compilation record (#3 I think), it had so awesome music on it, Motorhead, The Damned, Madness (early stuff), Lena Lovich, The Cure (my favorite song at the time "Jumping someone else's train!"), and the most obscure for me because it took me 25 years to come across them again....The Chords. So I finally started putting two and two together and realized that this was the awesome group that did the awesome song "Maybe Tomorrow" gotta have it yesterday! Then I'm debating do I get this 2 cd set or just the single cd with the same track on it. Well, if I love the rest of their music I'll end up getting the 2 cd set anyway so I better take the plunge. Now I'm not saying that's a terrible move cause its only $10.00, but when I got the cd I put it on Maybe Tomorrow and YEAH that's the song! But wait.... it's a different version, its more "pop" it's got people hand clapping rhythms on it, boy I'm glad I bought this version with disc two's alternate track that must be the one I have sung over and over for 25 years right? WRONG! The alternate "Maybe Tomorrow" is also "pop" not the hard edged almost punk version that they did for Stiff Records! It must have been really early in their short span before Polydor or whoever polished them up. Oh well, I found out where to get the original compilation record (isn't the internet a great thing?) but since I don't have a record player I'll probably pass and settle for pop. British way of life is a great sounding song as are a lot of others here, just not the way I would have envisioned the songs from hearing only that Stiff version of "Maybe Tomorrow". Another criticism, I put all my cd's on my laptop and use it as my media playback and disc 2 tracks are all labeled wrong (they are the same song labels as disc 1's songs) that's something that also happened when I bought the Jam box set and they are both Polydor labels so some crappy proofreading of the finished product (or maybe that's a screw-up and they are worth more or less who knows). Happy I made the purchase but not nearly as edgy as I would have liked, still I'm gonna tell my 16 and 12 year old that this is a new band that's not getting American radio airtime and see if they buy it, some tracks still hold up well to todays stuff.

4 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended Vital Power Pop.......2001-10-25

The Chords were to The Jam what The Who's John Entwistle was to Pete Townsend: a very good band at the same time and place (and label) as a great one. Their sound and style quickly aligned them with the Mod Revival of 1979, which, at the time, was a good portal for cheif composer/lead guitarist Chris Pope's stinging power-pop and his observations of "the British way of life." On more than one occasion Pope out-power-popped The Jam's Paul Weller: "Maybe Tomorrow" is a chaotic tour de force; "The Way It's Got To Be" a tender ballad that isn't compromised by the band's maximum speed approach. Their interpretaion of The Beatles' "She Said She Said" is one of the best covers I've heard - lush guitar work backed by manic drumming that maintains the song's spirit while truly becoming a Chords tune. In 1981, with a new lead vocalist in place, the band's sound began to evolve, with Pope's composing showing a startling maturity and finesse. But as they foretold in one of their own tunes, no one was listening anymore, and the band splintered. Compiled by Buddy Ascott, the band's drummer, 'This Is What They Want' gathers nearly all of the Chords' output for Polydor (missing is the original version of the debut single "Now It's Gone," represented by a re-cut of the tune they did for the bonus freebie 7-inch given away with the 'So Far Away' album). What keeps this collection from being 5-star is the inclusion of the demos, which is only for the most frothingly rabid of fans. Nevertheless, this collection is highly recommended for aficionados of late-'70s melodic power-pop, which had the brightest yet briefest shine between the Sex Pistols and Spandau Ballet.

            4 out of 5 stars Agreed - Finally!.......2001-10-12

The Chords were to The Jam what John Entwistle is to Pete Townsend - a very good band at a time and a place (and a label) as a great one. From their barely two years in the light, The Chords offered manic melodic post-punk powerpop that, on certain levels, outdid anything Weller had offered. While guitarist and chief composer Chris Pope may not have had a knack for gentler ballads (as the Jam were issuing with "That's Entertainment" or the string version of "Smithers-Jones") he showed a verve for intricate guitar/bass doubling patterns and vocal harmonies, which his bandmates performed with fluency. The set contains the lone Polydor album So Far Away, most of the original singles (the debut "Now It's Gone" is excluded for the version recut for bonus single given away with the album), and is peppered with various demos. It's these demo recordings that keep this from being a 5-star album, as they are strictly for the most frothing of rabid fans. Yet this set - compiled by the band's drummer, Buddy Ascott - is a vital compendium of exuberant power-pop from the brief spark of time between the Sex Pistols and Spandau Ballet.

            5 out of 5 stars Finally!.......2001-04-16

If you were a big fan of Brit Mod revival bands of the '80s, you know this CD has been a long time in coming. It features everything you need from the Chords on two discs. If your idea of music is power chords galore then this is the goods. Disc 1 has their classic SO FAR AWAY LP plus some extras like the brilliant One More Minute single. Disc 2 has most of their non-LP singles plus B sides. Pricey but well worth it if you were a Jam fan but never glommed on to the second wave of bands like these guys, the Purple Hearts and latter Secret Affair.
