I recently got to see Lysa Flores perform live, and I must say...she had me at "hello".I actually became aware of Ms.Flores when I read a review on the new Lila Downs album, and the reviewer felt that Lysa was portraying the Chicana experience in a better light.Apples and oranges, my friend.Apples and oranges.While Lila may wear her ancestry on her sleeve, Lysa wears her Anglo influences on hers.From the Joni Mitchell inflections in her voice, to the PJ Harvey-esque moans to the Tom Petty cover of "American Girl".Lysa is definitely an artist worth checking out...great tunes, vocals, and an awesome band.And while her album and her experience are unique, they don't make her better than Lila, just different.xoxo.

Lysa Flores gives voice to "the Silent Giant" of Mexican-American experience, and even more importantly from the largely ignored and oppressed female perspective. Without didacticism, the narratives in her songs build an understanding of the uniqueness and complexity of Chicanos, succeeding where Latin-American studies academia often fail in educating others due to elitism versus inclusiveness. Even better, she has a tremendous gift for melody, a crack band, and a voice rich with emotion.
