Synthpop for a Darkened Room 3

Editorial Reviews
Album Description
Synthpop (or electronic music in general) is often perceived by the general public as some kind of computer-generated sound without a soul or heart. Perhaps it is the false notion that any kind of music that is "programmed" somehow removes the need for creativity or musicianship. But most likely it is simply because they are sadly unexposed to the emotional, deep synthpop found here. The "Synthpop for a Darkened Room" series is intended to spotlight the emotional, melancholy, or romantic side of synthpop, where the songs are written to move the mind and heart, as well as the body. This is electronic music with a soul.

Synthpop for a Darkened Room 3, Music, Various Artists, This collection features smooth, emotional, passionate synthpop songs for your more moody moments.

5 out of 5 stars Synthpop with soul.......2005-04-05

When I think of synth-pop, the first thing that pops into my head is '80s pop bands Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys, and Erasure. I think of high energy, catchy pop songs that makes me want to dance, that or make me want to break out in old '80s fashion like the torn sweatshirt ala Jennifer Beals in "Flashdance" and leg warmers (or maybe not). I always imagined synth-pop songs being these fun, dance songs.

I was wrong. That has all changed. I recently had access to "Synthpop For a Darkened Room vol.3" and had to listen to it because I love synth-pop music so much. I didn't realize that synth-pop could sound so beautiful when the beat is turned down a notch or two in a more low-key mood. I'm sure some people say that music that is computer-generated such as synth-pop is not really music because it lacks no soul. Well I have to say that the music I heard on this compilation has a lot of soul just because there are no guitars. The songs are absolutely gorgeous. The lush melodies and ethereal vocals are absolutely breathtaking. Songs like "So Alive" by Pristina and Ultraviolet's "A Sea of Purity" with the angelic female vocals were candy for my ears. I sat enraptured the first time I heard those songs. Another must-hear track is Nevarakka's "Why". I never imagined that female vocals sounded so good with synth-pop until now (not that they were any bad to begin with) but the songs I heard on this album really took synth-pop to a new level in my personal opinion.

Yes, some of the synth-pop acts like Rupesh Cartel and Rename sounds awfully similiar to synth-pop legends Pet Shop Boys but it isn't as if that is a bad thing. Better sound like PSB than any band that passes them off as rock music nowadays. Wave in Head's "On the Corner" bore an eery resemblence to Depeche Mode. The lead singer sounded uncannily like Dave Gahan and the lead singer from synth-pop/goth/punk band Bella Morte. Another great track.

"Synthpop For a Darkened Room vol.3" is actually my first exposure to this series. I thoroughly enjoyed this compilation. There was not one song on the entire album that I did not like. I loved all the songs. The compilation proved to me that not all synth-pop is fast, addictively catchy, dance songs. This downtempo mood is surprisingly refreshing and breathtaking. I rarely buy compilations nowadays but this is definitely by far one of the best I have heard in a long time.
