About the Artist
Schooner Fare's Steve Romanoff, Chuck Romanoff and Tom Rowe enjoy featured radio airplay and album distribution across the waters as far as Australia, Japan, the British Isles and Eastern Europe. As keepers of the home folk fires, they have been transmitting their brand of grass-roots spirit to audiences in the U.S. and abroad since the group's inception in 1975.

Schooner Fare has won unanimous critical praise for their captivating harmonies and winning stage presence. In addition to their numerous original songs both contemporary and traditional themes, Schooner Fare writes and performs topical songs, country ballads and maritime masterpieces that have made their name synonymous with the "Down East" style.

Combining their talents on six- and twelve string guitars, banjos, electric bass and tin whistles, Schooner Fare's distinctive vocal and instrumental arrangements have been hailed by such folk music icons as the Kingston Trio, the Limeliters, the Chad Mitchell Trio, the Clancy Brothers, Tommy Makem and Tom Paxton.

Band members: Chuck Romanoff, vocals, six and twelve string guitar, 4 string banjo
Steve Romanoff, vocals, six and twelve string guitar, 5 string banjo
Tom Rowe, vocals, electric bass, tin whistles

5 out of 5 stars Folk Song Treasures.......2006-08-26

"Schooner Fare is a true Maine treasure.
On this CD, you'll hear more than three fine musicians, you'll hear the essence of Maine and what makes it such a special place. It's all here--the lighthouses and rocky coast, the stark beauty of "The County," the sailors, fishermen, and factory workers who give our state so much color and character.
Some of these songs will make you laugh. They will have you tapping your feet and singing along. Others will send shivers down your spine and bring water to your eyes. All of them will make you proud to live in a state as beautiful and bountiful as Maine. And if you're a visitor who hasn't yet experienced all we have to offer, Steve, Chuck, and Tom will take you there--without even getting your feet wet.
So cast off. Set sail. Listen to the sounds of the sea, the gulls flapping overhead, the buoys ringing in the harbor. And let the songs of Schooner Fare be your soundtrack. You'll have a wonderful voyage. (Governor Angus King & First Lady Mary Herman = on the liner notes)
I recently heard the group perform live and they are a treat.

5 out of 5 stars Our Maine Songs.......2002-12-16

This is a wonderful CD. My family and I used to sing along with the radio each year on our summer trip to Maine. We would sing mostly oldies and folk. Since finding Schooner Fare we have new favorites to add to the list and are teaching them to the next generation too. You can't get much better than Scuttlebutt for fun. Schooner Fare makes folk fun and educational too. We always feel good listening to them and you can almost feel the ocean spray on your face as they sing their way into your heart. Their songs evoke photos in the mind which makes the Summer vacation last much longer than anticipated. We love this and all of their albums.

If you're not from Maine, you may not be as exuberant over this album as a true Mainiac. However, Schooner Fare's music crosses all borders in the folk music realm. An old girlfriend who lives in Montana and has never seen the ocean rates this one of her all-time favorites. That's because Schooner Fare creates the feel of being in Maine and out on the ocean so amazingly through the use of Steve Romanoff's lyrics and music (plus a little help from brother Chuck and band mate Tom Rowe). If you can't feel the salt water sting your face and feel the swell of the ocean during "Day of the Clipper", I don't know what other art form will. If you can't feel the yearning for home and waiting to see the lights of your city after a long trip during "Portland Town" ... again, you must have not an ounce of sensitivity in your body (but maybe this album will give it to you). An absolute masterpiece - a collection of the songs from the place that inspired this world-famous folk trio

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A good start but..........2006-02-01

As other reviewers have mentioned, this isn't quite complete. All of the grand marches, dirges, and (understandably as this was recorded in the 1950s) unavailable-at-the-time marches are missing. Some non-marches have been substituted, confusing the issue. However, this is the largest and most readily available compilation that goes beyond the "greatest hits" sets that so permeate the CD bins. (There IS a truly complete set, but it's only available in Japan, and for whatever reason, it's not being mass-imported to the States at the moment. Go figure.)
For now, I would recommend this to someone who has not purchased a lot of other Sousa CDs so as to avoid the inevitable overlap. You won't have everything, but there's a lot to enjoy here.

4 out of 5 stars Close, but not QUITE complete.......2002-10-16

A very nice collection, with crisp performances. It is, however, not complete. There is at least one march, The Wedding March," missing, and it is one that is VERY hard to find. Perhaps the set should be called "The Almost, But Not Quite Complete, Sort Of, Marches....."
