About the Artist
Luciano Erba: Born in 1922, Luciano Erba belongs to the generation of poets of the 1900s in Italy, which followed Bertolucci, Caproni, Luzi and Sereni. He is part of the Lombardy trend, characterized by a taste for irony. Former Professor of French literature at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Milan, and Visiting Professor at universities in America, Luciano Erba has translated works by French poets of the XVII century and British poets of the XX century. He made his debut in 1951 with Linea K, which was later included in the collection Il male minore (1960). He received prestigious literary prizes in the 80's for his works, including the Viareggio prize for Il nastro di Moebius and the Bagutta for

Il tranviere metafisico. In 1989 he won the Librex-Guggenheim

"Eugenio Montale" for L'ippopotamo, a collection of published and unpublished works, characterized by a more somber tone and more ambitious aims. Erba's poetic activity continues today, utilizing a clear and simple language.

Mark Strand: Mark Strand, (1935), former Poet Laureate of the United States, is the author of over nine books of poems, including Blizzard of One (Alfred A. Knopf, 1998), which won the Pulitzer Prize. His honors include the Bollingen Prize, grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, a National Institute of Arts and Letters Award, the Edgar Allen Poe Prize, and a Rockefeller Foundation award, as well as fellowships from The Academy of American Poets, the MacArthur Foundation, and the Ingram Merrill Foundation. He is a former Chancellor of The Academy of American Poets. He read over 30 poems by Luciano Erba on the occasion of the first public reading of the Italian poet in Chicago at the Istituto Italiano di Cultura on April 8, 2004, in collaboration with The Poetry Center of Chicago.
