Bullish (Bullish, Bellyache & Belch) Volume 1
Editorial Reviews
About the Artist
Back in the day, Trevor Tanner was often found shouting out obscenities from the front stage position of a historically, notorious band called, The Bolshoi. As head mechanic for such a well oiled machine, Trevor Tanner wrote the songs, projected the lyrics like a demented tornado and more often than not gave the band their unswervingly crass yet cool image.
With skeleton jarring bass rhythms and off kilter guitar, The Bolshoi slithered from pub to pub showing off with a darkly enlightened attitude.
But that was then. Now, over a decade later, Mr. Tanner has resurfaced with a collection of 41 songs spread out across three unique CDs - Bullish, Bellyache & Belch. Taken all at once, as if each song were a kaleidoscopic pill, the new collection will have you whirring around like a trapped waspy. There are moments within the collection that you will wonder if Trevor has truly lost his mind (which he gleefully claims to have done on purpose).
The fact is, Bullish, Bellyache & Belch each possess a certain overall element that not only individualizes them enough to stand on their own as independent releases - but also gives them a sharp enough edge that they cut back and forth into each other like a Freddy vs. Jason blood-bath.
One of the greatest guitar-lords on the planet has truly returned singing loud and clear for his supper - making you feel like buying this chap a beer and snagging one for yourself as well.
Album Description
Bullish, volume 1 of the 3 CD collection (Bullish, Bellyache & Belch), has the most songs that rocket you back to The Bolshoi days - and it does so with just enough Bolshoi-ness that you will begin to miss the old days - but only enough to appreciate the fact that the new days shine, seasoned with wonderful elements of them.

Bellyache, volume 2 of the 3 CD collection (Bullish, Bellyache & Belch), is a rickety bridge of sorts, crossing you from smack dab in the middle of The Bolshoi days and onward to current Trevor-times. With musical textures from both - where Trevor has been - and - where Trevor is ultimately sailing - this volume is like a Harley ride on a voluptuous back-road.
Belch, volume 3 of the 3 CD collection (Bullish, Bellyache & Belch), is a true voyage into Trevor's new territory - a vast jungle of southern-tinged edginess mixed with a mind saturated with the oddity of common daily life. All set to the vocal style of the dark, mad oracle himself.

BOLSHOI REVISITED.......2005-05-01
Trevor Tanner's 3-cd solo album epitomizes the same haunting melodic hymns of all the Bolshoi albums. Trev's voice sends chills down my spine everytime I hear it. Just amazing. Bought the CD from someone who knows Trev and I got his autograph as well (this will be precious). Belch is my favorite among the three. My favorite songs: Jesse Owens, Mr. Ease and Miss Trust, Fine, Chinese Whispers. BUY the 3-cd set...You won't be disappointed.
A review from a friend.......2005-03-31
Trevor is one of the most gifted songwriters I have ever met. He also is a friend of mine. We have shared several stages as his current band "Rathkeltair" and I play the same festivals. I even have a cd of the demos for these three albums.
The thing about Trevors writing is he can't be pigeon holed into one style. He has his gothy stuff from the Bolshoi, as well as the country celtic stuff he did with Celtic Soul as well as the gems on these three albums. Buy them. Now. It'll be a ride worth taking.
Trevor Tanner - ex Bolshoi Frontman - is back!.......2005-02-09
I was a big fan of 80s band The Bolshoi. They had something really special and different going for them. Since their demise after only three superb LPs, nothing much has been heard from any of the members of the band. When I heard that Trevor Tanner, The Bolshoi's outspoken frontman singer & guitarist, had released not one, but three solo CDs in one go, I was amazed and placed my order straight away.
When it arrived, all the way from the USA where Trevor spends most of his time now, I was not disappointed at all. In fact, these are some of the best LPs that I have ever heard. Sophisticated and simple, Trevor still brings a refreshing change in his own distinctive style. There are some absolutely beautiful songs on these albums as well as all-out rockers. A special treat for Bolshoi fans are songs done in the same vane as old well-known Bolshoi tracks. You can clearly hear the tune of "Away" in "Fine". And I think that "Stinking" is an updated version of "She Don't Know". But hey, I didn't buy these CDs for old glory....it was just fun and surprising to get tracks like these.
Apparently Trevor is working on more new material which he has amassed in his "wilderness years". Bring it on, Trevor! With tracks as outstanding as "Overdriver" on this collection, then I really can't wait for the next installment.
Buy these CDs. You really won't be disappointed.
The wait was worth it!.......2004-12-19
Having been a Bolshoi fan for the last 20 years I was pleaseantly surprised when on The Greatest Hits album (surely having The Bolshoi and Greatest Hits in the same sentence is an oxymoron?) Trevor had couple of solo songs on it. I was even more surprised when I saw interviews stating that 3 albums were coming out shortly (this was 1998 I think). Well I've finally managed to get hold of this stuff and I am glad that all my waiting was not in vain.
Trevor's voice is still as recognisable as always, and his guitar playing is pretty much what I expected. You can tell that he has been in America for much of the time since the Bolshoi split - this is evident in quite alot of the lyrics and the style of the songs.
Of the albums I think that Belch is my favourite - it being more forward looking in it's style. I'm listening to Bullish as I write this review and it's style is most reminisent of The Bolshoi and as such it reminds me of being a teenager in the 80s in England. Bellyache is perhaps the weakest link in this set (but it's still a VERY good album) and the reason for this is that I'm not actually sure what it represents - although deep down I know that it represents Trevor's departure from his roots in the Bolshoi to where he is today...to me he will always represent the Bolshoi.
One of the newspapers in England (I think it was the Daily Mail - but it was long time ago and I'm getting older) once said that The Bolshoi were the best band that nobody had ever heard of - well Trevor Tanner is probably the best Singer/Songwriter that nobody has ever heard of.
If you liked the Bolshoi - then you simply need to buy this!
The wait is over!.......2004-06-10
After waiting months they are here! After waiting years since THE BOLSHOI they are here!
Trevor Tanner is a great songwriter, and fantastic musician, an AWESOME ARTIST! I love these cd's. A personal favorite of course is the Hills of the West!!
I love the concept of three different albums with 3 different feels to them, but they all are him! You cant listen to him without a smile coming to your face and when he knows the lyrics are off, you can sense a smile from him coming thru the cd too!
For those who cant get enough of this man hopefully these 3 will be the first of many more to come! I dont think he will run out of talent for songwriting and we can always hope for more!
I will be running my 3 constantly in the house and car!
Thanks Trevor and thank you Emperor Penguin!

Herb gets increasingly high-tech, but to great effect.......2005-04-07
Herb Alpert credited "Bullish", this 1984 album, to "Herb Alpert Tijuana Brass", probably as a tie-in with a tour that Alpert went on around this time which did include four members of the original Tijuana Brass. None of the original Tijuana Brass appear on this album though, & with the glossy mid-'80s sheen of the album, it ain't exactly a return to his '60s sound either. Still, "Bullish" is an impossible-to-resist collection demonstrating that Alpert's ear for irresistible melody was as strong as ever.
"Struttin' On Five" was produced by Alpert & [Randy] Badazz & arranged by Andy Armer & Badazz, and the rest of the album was produced by Herb Alpert & John Barnes with the arrangements being credited to "John Barnes with Herb Alpert". The result is that half of the album's tracks have a majorly in-your-face, mid-'80s club dance feel to them. You might think that's a recipe for disaster, but it actually isn't--the album starts with the characteristically mid-tempo, but whomping, dramatic, & deathlessly catchy title track; the uptempo "Make A Wish" is super catchy, & the cover of "Maniac" though marred by typically grating vocals from Herb's wife Lani Hall, is still undeniably catchy and a lot of fun. The fast-paced "Struttin' On Five" is graced with insanely catchy trumpet hooks from Herb making it impossible to resist. The strongly Latin-pop flavored "Passion Play", written by Alpert & Barnes, is once again, infectiously catchy.
Naturally, there are some ballads here as well. The Alpert & Barnes-composed "Love Without Words" is gorgeous with a sumptous melody; there is a brief, jarring, and corny vocal section, but it's a minor gripe. Also written by Alpert & Barnes is the terrific "Life Is My Song", a wistful, nicely orchestrated album-closer. Barnes' gets in a solo composition with "Always Have A Dream", a very strong ballad in its own right.
Quite simply, Herb Alpert continued his '80s winning streak with this superb album--if you've got an allergy to glossy, mid-'80s 'dance-pop' production values, a lot of this album will probably get on your nerves, but any serious music listener can't go wrong with it. Don't expect to find this cheaply on CD, but you can probably get it cheap on vinyl, & it'd really be worth it to do so.

MediaPlus Magazine Review.......2004-06-16
Back in the day when music mattered, when bands spent countless hours writing, recording, rethinking and generally putting their souls into every ounce of musical concoction, there was a goth-pop ensemble, The Bolshoi, slithering in and out of pubs, mystifying the audience with their wit and vigor. But all good things end - or do they? Now, fifteen years later, fearless leader, Trevor Tanner has emerged from a briny sea filled with open-wound irritating acts. Via a submarine of sorts that can also sail the ocean's surface and miraculously enough, can even take to the skies, Tanner stands in front of the mast, holding a tube of ointment labeled: open-wound quick-fix. Bullish, the first volume of three (available alone or in a beautimus, 3-CD collective) is the dark, obscure, sinister volume of a vast, three-part, sonic adventure. With morbid tracks like the opening, "Hero Comes Home," Tanner retains the gloomy vibe of The Bolshoi, while adding in new tone elements that are obviously bouncing, frantically inside his skull, while seeping through tiny, hairline cracks. Almost Pink Floydish on tracks like, "Driftwood" and the finale, "Shine," Bullish canvases room for Tanner's fancy guitar-work, evident on the rockier, "Overdriver" and the calm, self-reflective "Life's A Beach." There's even more diversity on the volume when "Filthy And Twisted" blazes forth with its own demented tactics. Truly a songwriting genius, Tanner may have been out of the limelight for a chunk of time but he's back, with the utmost of strength and an over 40 song, diverse as hell, three-volume boxed set - ready to stun. Good lord, my good man.

Wonderful Contemporary Jazz Album.......2005-12-15
This album takes some own elements of Herb Alpert with new modern, funky, latin and smooth jazz features, but he still keeps his own TJB style. Lani Hall (Herb Alpert's wife) appears on it with wonderful vocals. You hear three notes and you know it's Herb Alpert (as you can read on Herb Alpert's internet site www.herbalpert.com). You'll be enjoying this wonderful music, which is a gift to your ears.
