Album Description

Where it's the gorgeous string trio underpinning "Last Tide," the melancholy epic "Duk Koo Kim," the unexpected driving rhythms of "Lily and Parrots," or the compelling personal reminiscences of "Floating," the material both expands and refines Kozelek's trademark sound. The songs on Ghosts of the Great Highway concern themselves more than ever with matters of life and death, without ever forgetting the inherent magic of a pretty melody or a gripping beat.

5 out of 5 stars i love it.......2007-07-06

I found this album by researching Mark Kozelek after seeing him in Shopgirl. I didn't know that my two favorite songs from the movie were on this album. It's a mellow record, so I listen to it sometimes when I'm stressed and it chills me out. I also listen to it before I go to sleep. Other then Lily and Parrots, all of songs are pretty slow.
It's a great album.

5 out of 5 stars Yes........2007-07-06

So as not to be redundant, I will only say that this album is by far one of the most beautiful pieces of modern alternative music recorded. It rivals U2's The Joshua Tree and I dare say, when it comes to undeserved obscurity, Sun Kil Moon are the modern equivalent of Nick Drake. Just as he was unknown by his own generation and discovered decades later, I wouldn't be surprised if people in 20-30 years picked up Ghosts and wondered why the hell it wasn't celebrated for the beauty that it is.

5 out of 5 stars One of my Top 5 Favorites of All Time.......2007-04-19

I purchased this CD years ago on the strength and beauty of the song "Carry Me Ohio" alone. I listened to the entire CD just once before shoving it back in its case in disgust and throwing it onto the floor of my car's passenger's side. I wasn't ready for this CD. I wasn't open-minded enough to enjoy it. Fast-forward two or three years. I was cleaning out my car one summer day (yes, I'm really that big of a Car Slob(tm)) when I came across this CD wedged under the front passenger's seat. I didn't feel like listening to the crappy terrestrial radio station any longer, so I shoved this into the CD player to listen to as I Armor All'd the dash. I was in love. I couldn't stop listening to this CD. From the opening notes of "Glenn Tipton" to the rollicking riff of "Lily and Parrots" to the exciting yet peaceful notes of 14-minute "Duk Koo Kim," I couldn't get enough of this music. "Carry Me Ohio" soon became on of my LEAST favorite tunes on the CD. I love Mark Kozelek's reedy voice -- which I like to describe as a cross between Neil Young and Chris Isaak -- and I love his compositions. Even my husband, Mr. Slipknot Lamb Of God Mudvayne, loves this CD with a passion. Buy it. Immerse yourself in it. I wouldn't be surprised if it soon became on of your Top 5 or Top 10 favorites of all time, too. :)

5 out of 5 stars really... amazing... music...........2007-04-10

...and not "amazing" the way that 22 year old girl says "amazing." More like, amazing the way a 43 year old male would say "amazing."

I know it's a bit of an acquired taste, and not everyone will like this. I've met a few people who love it like I do, but not many. If you are a fan of music by, say, Neil Young, Hem, Leonard Cohen... I would say most likely you will like this CD. As a whole, it's a great piece of work. It really stands together as a whole. As a matter of fact, I would suggest the best place to listen is when you are alone in the car on a long drive.

2 out of 5 stars I really wanted to like this..........2007-02-26

I had a tough time listening to this. Mark Kozelek's voice seems to me to be much like Neil Young's, but lacking the melodious quality of Young's voice. You're left with a flat nasality that grates. The music is trance inducing, a drone in the background, neither serving the lyrics nor engaging the listener. After reading the reviews, I realize I'm in the minority here, and I'm glad so many people found enjoyment with this. I wish I were one of them, but all I feel here is a numbness.

4 out of 5 stars Uncomplicated but entertaining from start to end.......2007-06-05

New York-based The Bravery sort of stormed onto the music scene in 2005 with their self-titled debut album, which contained one of the great singles of that year, "An Honest Mistake". After tireless touring, now finally comes the band's follow-up album.

On "The Sun and the Moon" (12 tracks; 40 min.), the Bravery does not falter far from the sound that made their debut album a success. The opener "Intro/Believe" brings a strong reggae undertone. First single "Time Won't Let Me Go" is a compelling ballad, Bravery-style. The songs generally flow well from one into another, and there are very few weak moments on te album. Other favorite tracks for me include "This Is Not the End", "Split Me Wide Open" (inviting an obvious comparison to the Cure), and "Above and Below", another one of those uptempo reggae-flavored songs. The only strike-out on the album is the pensive "Tragedy Bound", which misfires and simply is misplaced on this set.

This limited edition comes with a second CD (2 tracks, 6 min.). "Rat in the Walls" is a highly charged anthem that would've fitted nicely on the proper album. "Faces" is nice, but non-essential. Overall, while this certainly is not art with a capital "A", I have nevertheless found myself playing this album over and over again. This is uncomplicated but very entertaining from beginning to end.

As a last comment, am I the only one to notice how eerily similar this album compares to and sounds like the latest Kaiser Chiefs' album "Yours Truly, Angry Mob"? Listen to these 2 albums back-to-back and you'll see what I mean. That aside, the Bravery is coming to Cincinnati next month, and I can't wait to see how they sound live.

This collection of American songs spanning 150 years shows Deborah Voigt, one of the world's leading sopranos, in a new light. She successfully achieves the transition from the larger-than-life operatic stage to the intimate world of song, especially in the more outgoing, dramatic pieces. Voigt enters into each composer's style with complete empathy. Charles Ives was an irrepressible maverick and a stylistic chameleon. Voigt captures the songs' hymn-like simplicity and irreverent rambunctiousness, though her voice is a bit too heavy for them. Leonard Bernstein's jazzy irony also needs more lightness, but the slow love songs are done beautifully. Voigt really comes into her own in Charles Griffes's lush impressionism, evoking the sultriness of Cleopatra and the rhythms of a Spanish dance, and Amy Beach's unabashed effusive romanticism. Composer Ben Moore is a child of our own time, born in 1960. He moves between many styles with natural ease. Set to great English and American poetry, some of his songs were written for Voigt, and she sings them to perfection. The splendid pianist Brian Zeger provides both leadership and support. --Edith Eisler

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Mixed results.......2006-02-22

This is an interesting collection of American songs, but I don't feel that Ms Voigt sold these selections to me. She still sounds like an opera singer trying to squeeze a very powerful and large voice into smaller setting for these songs, with mixed success. She is much, much better than many of her fellow sopranos that tried such repertoire, but I feel that she only gets it right in Amy Beach and Griffes songs. And even there, she does not have a sound that would make every song recital fan happy.
And what's with the title of this album? I think she is a classy artist and deserves better than such silly title, her label probably came up with that.
Nice try overall, but I hope Ms Voigt will do more Strauss and Wagner from now on, not more songs like these.

2 out of 5 stars Like driving a Ferrari in a school zone........2006-02-02

Like a lot of big operatic voices, Voigt is hard to capture on CD; her recordings of Wagner and Strauss excerpts are good, but they can't convey the experience of hearing her live in an opera house. And singing with only piano accompaniment, as here, she simply can't use most of the power in her voice. As sensitive as her performances are I can't help feeling that she's having to hold back. For American song sung with more delicacy and grace I would suggest Barbara Bonney or Dawn Upshaw (I can't agree with previous reviewers' suggestion of Cheryl Studer's Barber, though Hampson is wonderful on that set).

4 out of 5 stars Stellar Soprano Applies Her Considerable Talent to a Lightning-Quick, All-American Repertoire.......2005-11-08

It's a shame that soprano Deborah Voigt hit her greatest notoriety last year for being fired by the Royal Opera House for being too fat for the title role of "Ariadne aux Naxos" by Richard Strauss. She subsequently lost eighty pounds but luckily none of her vocal prowess as can be heard to great effect on this intriguing collection of American songs, 25 in all and averaging a little over two minutes each. It would have seemed like a mismatch to apply her powerful voice - famous for her big Wagnerian roles - to sometimes delicate tunes. Voigt, however, confounds expectations with a surprisingly nuanced performance that showcases her interpretative skills on a diverse set of musical styles.

Similar to what countertenor David Daniels did with his 2003 disc with guitarist Craig Ogden, "A Quiet Thing", Voigt and pianist Brian Zeger have created a wide-ranging lyrical repertoire that encompasses significant vocal demands while remaining intimate in setting. In fact, both Daniels and Voigt cover Leonard Bernstein's anti-war lullaby, "So Pretty", with haunting aplomb. She also manages to dance effectively over the "Da-ga-da-ga-dums" of Bernstein's challenging "Piccola serenata". Voigt does wonders with the opening Charles Ives selections by not overplaying the innate sentiment of the tunes, in particular, soaring with the highly dramatic "The Children's Hour" by Longfellow and even covering the churchy warhorse, "At the River", with conviction.

There are eight highly individualistic songs by Ben Moore that stretch Voigt with bountiful results. The standouts of the Moore set are the English sea chantey-like "The Ivy-Wife" by Thomas Hardy, the lushly romantic "I Am in Need of Music" by Elizabeth Bishop; the sweeping "Darkling, I Listen" by John Keats; and the discordant waltz, "Bright Cap and Streamers", by James Joyce. For me, the highpoints of the recording are the last two sets by Charles Tomlinson Griffes and Amy Beach, both of whom tap impressively into Voigt's natural theatricality proven especially by her performances of Griffes's lush "Cleopatra to the Asp" and Bishop's rolling "I Send My Heart Up to Thee".

The one shortcoming of the recording overall is that the briefness of the songs does not really capitalize on Voigt's impressive dramatic capabilities in showcasing changes in characters she would have been allowed in her opera roles. For all the limitations it represents, this is a genuine recital album, and truly transcendent moments are fleeting at best especially given the variety of moods that need to be expressed in lightning-flash strokes. However, taken for the genre it represents, this is a stellar recording to appreciate a singer who is able to do more than Wagner and lose weight.

1 out of 5 stars May have a heart but what good is it if the artistic results are a void?.......2005-10-31

The header says it all. Thumbs down all the way. Get instead the Samuel Barber double set with Cheryl Studer and Thomas Hampson if you wish to experience true heartrending Americana. As another reviewer put it, you get no gimmicks and no camp from these two distinguished artists.

5 out of 5 stars Great new context for Voigt.......2005-09-30

It is great to hear Voigt in an American lieder recital. She is a top vocalist in her vocal prime. I think this is a lovely disc, and it really takes off especially with the songs of Ben Moore who has written many works just for Voigt. She tones down the volume of her sound and reins in the dramatic aspect of her soprano to give these songs a proper context and remains in service of them throughout the recital. Give this one a try! EMI - Release her Marshallin from Der Rosenkavalier, I think it would be wonderful. I know she just took on that role this summer.

Originally released as a series of 78 rpm recordings for Capitol in the late 1940s, this set collects the work of Dr. Samuel J. Hoffman, the leading theremin virtuoso of his age. After adding theremin to a number of successful films (most notably, Spellbound, The Lost Weekend, and The Day the Earth Stood Still), Hoffman (a podiatrist by profession) teamed with British composer Harry Revel. The result: three albums that introduced this oddly provocative instrument to the world. On Music Out of the Moon, the tone is optimistic futurism with Hoffman guiding his instrument through dramatic swoops across the universe while an enthusiastic chorus oohs and ahhs at the wonder of it all. With tracks like "Lunar Rhapsody", "Mist O' the Moon," and "Radar Blues", Moon may be the most unintentionally hilarious disc in the set. The second disc, Perfume Set to Music was, according to the liner notes, inspired by "world famous perfumes." The music, of course, is as ridiculous as the concept. The chorus remains on Perfume, but the mood is a bit more sedate, stepping away from futuristic jazz and utilizing more string arrangements. On Music for Peace of Mind, listeners are instructed that "This music has a message, if you will open your mind and heart to receive it. Turn down the lights, relax in an easy chair, and listen. Then, for a few stolen hours, perhaps you will warm to happy memories and blissful hopes." Oh, you will, all right, you will. --S. Duda

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Les Baxter, too!.......2007-04-25

This is a package of 3 discs, each with its own sleeve, which replicate the very brief original 1947-50 albums.

Much of the music here is fairly tame cocktail stuff - all of it composed by Harry Revel and nothing at all like the film work Dr. Hoffman had done in Hitchcock (and Dali)'s SPELLBOUND or would be called upon to do in the 1950s. The collection was a disappointment to me in that regard, but as I'm a Baxter fan and 2 of the 3 original albums were Baxter/Hoffman projects, I enjoy the opportunity to hear some of Baxter's pre-Nat Cole work.

The first album, MUSIC OUT OF THE MOON, is mostly doo-wah pop vocals. The theremin might double the vocal line or take an occasional solo. This album reminds me a bit too much of the "Wake the Town and Tell the People" type of Baxter.

The second album, PERFUME SET TO MUSIC, is unquestionably exotica in spirit. There's far more variety of sound and mood and Dr. Hoffman's theremin is put to better use. His solos are more free - anticipatory of the vocalise for which Baxter would become renowned in the 1950s with Yma Sumac! Nice! I know that at least one of these tunes, "Jet", was released on 45 at the time of this recording (on RCA Victor), billed as "Orchestra and Chorus under the direction of Leslie Baxter / Samuel Hoffman - theremin" since I myself have it. Its B-side was another Revel ditty entitled "Struttin' with Clayton" which is not included here - no great loss actually, but cause to wonder whether more might be out there somewhere.

The Billy May album MUSIC FOR PEACE OF MIND may be my favorite of the three. The theremin is front and center from the outset. The ensemble playing is better. It's a good big band rather than the cocktail orchestra of the Baxter recordings. The piano work is stronger. Also, the sound is opened up - not so squelched as in the older Baxter projects. The whole thing is vigorous, if not quite as enchanting as the Baxter PERFUME recording.

This is a nice collection. For those out there who might not necessarily care about having the mini versions of the original album covers, the very same music is also available as a single disc entitled WAVES IN THE ETHER. Consequently and fortunately, if one DOES prefer this 3-disc presentation, the appearance of that alternative on the market has significantly decreased the price of this earlier-released product.

4 out of 5 stars Good For A Trip To The Moon.......2004-07-23

I will be the first to confess that this is not the type of music that I would generally listen to on my own accord. The theremin is a peculiar instrument and it is used to good effect here. A word of caution though, if you are looking for a CD showcasing the theremin for the "spooky sounds" it is capable of, do not buy this CD. This is very melodic theremin and vocal jazz from the 1950s. All three volumes are very structured and emphasize harmonies. This is a strangely absorbing CD set, and I bought it for a very quirky reason.

I am an airline and former Air Force pilot, and Neil Armstrong has been my hero since childhood. When he went to the moon on Apollo 11 he took with him a tape of "Music Out Of The Moon", which he played in the tape player he shared with Buzz Aldrin and Mike Collins. He took it because it had long been a favorite of him and also his wife, Jan. He played some of the peculiar sounds over the NASA downlink at one point on the way home as a private message to Jan, much to the confusion of the flight controllers. Ever since I read the story I wanted to hear this recording and was not disappointed, although it isn't exactly what I expected, either. For more information, see "First On The Moon", by Armstrong, Aldrin, and Collins. Since the time of these recordings many other artists have experimented with the theremin, including Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin.

If you like music from the 1950s you will like this. If you like experimental music you will like this. I only gave it four stars as a value statement: the set is rather expensive and contains three CDs, yet there is only about an hour of material total, which seems a bit excessive. A better package would have had all three volumes on one CD, but then nobody would pay thirty dollars for it I suppose.

Bottom line: give it a listen. If it's good enough for Neil, it's good enough for me.

3 out of 5 stars Unique & rewarding, but for hardcore fans only.......2004-05-22

Be warned, most of your money spent on this so-called "box set" will be paying for the gatefold-style casing, paper disc sleeves and the accompanying 28-page booklet. Each of these albums clock in at under 20 minutes, combining for a total of only 54 minutes of music across all three discs. Nonetheless, this is truly vintage; embodying the rapid, dashing orchestral sounds of WWII movie previews and Warner Brothers cartoons. Whenever my wife's friends hear this music, they always get a crooked face and say, "This sounds like an old Disney movie."

The first two discs, "Music Out Of The Moon" and "Perfume Set To Music" (arranged by Les Baxter), sound like a game show orchestra tuning in some otherworldy sounds; Hoffman's theremin flirts alongside a piano, harp, strings, and even a vocal choir (not quite the Ray Conniff style if that irritates you). The great Billy May conducts the last disc, "Music For Peace Of Mind". The expressive song titles on this disc indicate the gentle mood that is intended, emphasized by wavy flutes and strings. The first track, "This Room Is My Castle Of Quiet", swallows my thoughts up and takes me away every time I hear this. Hoffman restrains himself with the theremin; most of the songs have small passages where he is buried deep within the orchestra or not heard at all.

The aforementioned booklet details the theremin's origin, as well as an explaination of Hoffman's induction into music (he was a chiropodist by trade). A couple of these tracks have appeared on Volume 3 of the Capitol Records Ultra-Lounge series, and I recommend buying that as well if this disc really excites you. I enjoy this box set but I would endorse it more for fans of lounge music than for fans of the theremin.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful!!!.......2002-03-23

Beautiful light orchestral compositions in the classic post-WW2 style, featuring the Theremin as a solo instrument. If you're looking for spooky sci-fi Theremin sound effects, this ain't it. (For that, check out the DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL soundtrack.) Discs 1 and 2 were orchestrated and conducted by the great Les Baxter, disc 3 by Billy May, when both were only in their late 20s. I bought this set to add to my extensive Les Baxter collection, and am very glad I did! As to why 3 discs when all the music could've fit onto one, I wondered that too until my set arrived in this morning's mail. Each disc comes in its own little sleeve that reproduces the cover art and liner notes from the original 78rpm album, plus an excellent accompanying booklet with more notes. A perfect collector's item!

5 out of 5 stars A "Must" for Ives fans.......2002-07-21

I could go on and on about Ives, but it would be rather pointless in this case. The bare-bones facts of the matter is that this is an excellent disc and is a must for those whose Ives collection needs fleshed out with some of the smaller and more elusive works.

5 out of 5 stars Ives, the Recycler.......2001-11-06

It is a well-known fact that many composers have gotten into the habit of rewriting and/or recycling older compositions as something new. For example, Handel recycled a lot of his organ concertos as concertos for harp and/or harpsichord, as well as a number of recorder sonatas. Ives was very keen on recycling his own works in different formats. One only has to peruse certain of the Ives songs, for instance, to realize that some of that material showed up in his symphonies. His fourth symphony alone sports two movements which were recycled: one from the first string quartet, and one from a song.
It is refreshing to see, at last, a collection which demonstrates so thoroughly Ives's process of recycling not only his own tunes but other people's as well. In particular I was pleased to see that this recording includes "Calcium Light Night" which uses George F. Root's "Tramp! Tramp! Tramp!" Also we have what is perhaps the first recording on CD of The Pond, which Ives wrote as a tribute to his father who used to play "Kathleen Mavourneen" on the trumpet at a pond near their home in Danbury, Connecticut. I was surprised to learn that Ives had rewritten The Pond not just once but twice.
I find myself in agreement, by the way, with the other reviewer concerning the omission of the song "The Cage" which is a lovely and very brief song. However, this particular song is available on other recordings of Ives's work, such as the recording of Ives songs by Jan deGaetani and Gilbert Kalish, so I didn't miss it that much.

5 out of 5 stars Ives at his best.......2001-06-14

I finished listening to this CD a little while ago and I'm still glowing. It's a creative bit of programming in a well-performed, well-engineered reaslization. First come Ives's pieces for chamber orchestra, grouped as he intended into his idiosyncratic "sets." Then come the same pieces again, in the same order, in their versions for voice and piano. Some of the orchestral music. such as "Evening" was unknown to me. Others, like "Charlie Rutledge," I knew only as songs. (The orchestral arrangement of "Rutledge" is an eye-opener--it's like Copland by way of Varese.) Loveliest of all is the voice of the soprano Susan Narucki. Her interpretation of the Se'er (Set No. 1) seemed rather strident on first hearing, but in the softer, slower songs she gave me chills, esp. "Like a Sick Eagle" and "The Indians." The CD also includes a fine rendition of the Set for Theater Orchestra. Conductor Richard Bernas and his ensemble do well by the broken, sad-yet-happy ragtime of "In the Inn." The only omission in the collection is a vocal performance of "In the Cage"--the first of the three pieces. The other two don't have vocals counterparts, but "In the Cage" does, and one wonders why Bernas and company decided not to include it.

I have always believed that some of Ives's best music can be found in his pieces for chamber orchestra, in which, surprisingly, he uses his signature quotation technique only sparingly. Most of the tunes are original. The music is undiluted Ives, and it is wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars Good programing, great performances.......2001-05-11

Yes, Ives was nuts. He composed brilliant songs, then orchestrated the music, leaving out the words, calling the result "Sets for Theater Orchestra". Or vice versa. This is the first CD that includes alterantive Ives versions side by side, giving you both the songs and the orchestra music. The comparisons are fascinating and the performances are terrific. Sandford Sylvan is a great American singer and the orchestra is right on top of things.

3 out of 5 stars An "Orphic egg" laid.......2005-12-17

Back in the '70s Decca put out a budget US label called "Orphic Egg." My title utilizes this as a pun for what Orpheus did with Ives's Set No. 1.

The person who advised Orpheus on this music did a really poor job. Never mind the HOWLER in the top Violin in an early-on measure in "The St. Gaudens" (A-sharp instead of A-natural -- WHOA!). I'm here to write about this version of Set No. 1: The See'r, A Lecture, The Ruined River, Like a Sick Eagle, Calcium Light Night, and Incantation.

First off I'll point out the most obvious blooper. The Solo horn part in Incantation is played in the wrong key! It is supposed to start on E-flat, but sounds a 5th lower on A-flat. The reason this happened is that the person who advised them didn't notice that in the score it says "actual sounds" above the Solo staff, but this note was omitted from the part (publisher's error). So the English Horn plays it as if it is a transposing part, and thus it sounds a 5th lower than it should be! All that needed to be done was to check the version for voice and piano -- but their advisor didn't bother to do that.

The versions of The See'r and Like a Sick Eagle are the ones made by Gunther Schuller for his Columbia LP. They're "all right" but Schuller based his scores solely on the old 1934 copyist scores that perpetuate significant if minor errors. This version of A Lecture is the one made by Gregg Smith for his second Columbia LP which also has minor errors and changes the Solo cornet to clarinet.

Now comes the true joke of the album (a sad joke poorly played on Orpheus): these versions of The Ruined River and Calcium Light Night are not just in critical error, at times they are just plain crazy! The score used for CLN is almost funny for me to listen to --- wrong rhythms, sometimes bizzare rhythms, especially in the solo cornet part, and a few completely incorrect parts for the instruments. Reading an Ives sketch can be deceiving, and one shouldn't always rely on alignment of one part against another, or hastily-sketched fragments of parts duplicated by a later addition, but this is what was done when this score was made by the group's advisor. It doesn't even sound, to my ears, like a march anymore, and this piece is supposed to represent the members of Psi Upsilon and Delta Kappa Epsilon marching across the Old Yale Campus initiating new members and singing uproariously. They could have used Ken Singleton's score, which is a good score and appears on Jim Sinclair's Koch CD, but I hear it's unavailable. They might have even used the now-discredited Henry Cowell "arrangement" and done better, but they didn't!

Now I say all this because I have some inside information. I was commissioned to do a critical Ives Society edition of this Set in the 1980s, and Ensemble Modern used that edition in their now (unfortunately) out-of-print EMI CD. One day I was called up by the person advising Orpheus and asked if I would send them my edition, in score and parts, because this person thought it would be "wonderful" to have these pieces fill out the CD (in other words, I was sweet-talked into providing these materials). I did so, at my own expense and without asking for any remuneration. I checked with Orpheus a few days later and they had received my materials. Within a few minutes I was called back by the person who had asked for the materials and was seriously cussed out for daring to call Orpheus on my own. I was a little stunned. I was even more stunned when this CD came out with this travesty of an edition on it! (I also had a good laugh over how truly awful it was!)

I wrote Orpheus telling them how they had been taken in (my first use of the "Orphic egg" metaphor) but they didn't seem to care. It's their misfortune that they put their trust in someone who didn't merit it.

The CD has a wonderful rendition of Symphony No. 3 and the Theater Orchestra Set, and the other two movements of "Three Places." But don't buy it for Set No. 1! You can do better with Richard Bernas's "When the Moon" CD (even though he was made to use Cowell's score fof Calcium Light Night).
