About the Artist
Dan Lipton is a musician and writer based in New York City, where his diverse career bridges pop music, film work and theater. His writing was featured in the recent HarperCollins book Working Musicians alongside legends like Carole King, Bruce Springsteen and Keith Richards. Lipton performs regularly in support of his own music at clubs across the country and has released two solo albums on his own label, MB1PRODUCE: the song cycle Travelogue (1999) and his pop album Life In Pictures (2003), which earned a 2003 ASCAPlus Award for Popular Music. He has just received a 2004 ASCAPlus Award on the strength of demos for his next project, ZEITGEIST. The ZEITGEIST album features collaborations with the finest musicians in classical, jazz, pop and theatrical music. It will be released in early 2005.
Lipton has scored a number of award-winning short films including Jeff Yorkes Winners Cup (Coca-Cola Refreshing Filmmaker Award) and Corey Rosens Keep Clear (Empire State Film Festival, Aspen Comedy Festival). He has just completed music for a new short entitled The Waiting Room, directed by Reif Larsen.
Dan Lipton was the original pianist for the hit Broadway musical The Full Monty by David Yazbek and Terrence McNally. In 2005 he will return to the orchestra pit for Yazbeks new musical Dirty Rotten Scoundrels starring John Lithgow. He has also appeared in concert halls across the country accompanying acclaimed singer Audra McDonald, including performances at Chicagos Symphony Hall and Philadelphias National Constitution Center.
Other recordings include his solo EP Fazed (MB1PRODUCE), A**hole Music (Mr. Bagel Productions) and the Grammy-nominated original cast recording of The Full Monty (RCA Victor).
Dan Liptons unique talent combines formal training and raw instinct. He holds a B.M. in Music Composition from Northwestern University.
Album Description
Dan Lipton's second album LIFE IN PICTURES earned a 2003 ASCAPlus Award for popular music. The solid songs are anchored by Lipton's acoustic guitar and signature keyboard work. His own distinctive arrangements create an acoustic-electro-orchestral world that expands, but never overshadows, the hook-filled pop tunes. The music lands somewhere between Elvis Costello and Beck, the structured song forms dressed up in eclectic production.
Life In Pictures, Music, Dan Lipton, NYC songwriter takes listeners on a genre-hopping joyride... horns, strings, drum loops, accordions, guitars, vibraphones... A crafty album of widescreen, sonic pop.

Customer Reviews:
Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04
This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!
Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20
Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!
Frank's view.......2006-08-19
This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.
Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08
I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.
The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!
I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.
The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Customer Reviews:
So I'm just learning violin..........2006-09-21
and I can not play like Joshua Bell. For this, he better consider himself damn lucky as the world could not handle two of us Joshua Bells.
This was my first exposure to this phenom. Sorry, I had never heard of him until I got my first issue of STRINGS magazine and he was on the cover. My wife liked the cover and wanted to know if I got better would I not only sound like him but would I also look like him? I guess we'll never know how that will actually turn out. Safe to say, I'll end up not looking like him as I can never be quite as good as him. Again, damn lucky for Josh as I don't think the world could handle two of us.
This disc is an absolute gem not only for the Joshua Bell and violin fan, but the arrangements and the sound quality is superb. What this disc made me realize is that there are truly only a few out there that have complete and total control of their craft. It also made me decide that I would like to perhaps pick up a few more Joshua Bell recordings. For my wife, I guess I'll just duplicate them and give the copies to her in a blank cd case. I can tell her it's me playing. That ought to heat things up!
Joshua Bell..........2005-12-05
This CD is a wonderful CD to see how Joshua Bell interprets some of the standard repertory of violinists of this century. The only thing I was dissapointed in slightly was that it included music from other CD's already produced by Bell, but otherwise, a wonderful gift for someone who has never heard Bell before.

I am not a music critic nor do I "know" much about music but if you love lovely violin music you will love this.
Great Recording.......2007-01-04
The Kreisler pieces are played exceptionally well. The one disc alone is worth the price of the double disc collection. Great playing.

Good job.......2005-08-26
I remember when I was little, I had this cd, but i lost it. I bought a similiar type of one through TIme Life and decided to try the Classical Thunder one. I have like it so far.
Masterful!.......2005-06-15
This two CD set is magnificent. I got the set in the early 1990's when it was advertised on television, along with other releases in Time Life's set. I was struck by the interpretations of the conductors. Whenever I hear these pieces now, I judge them against this recording. Amazing selection as well. There are staples of orchestra repetoire, like Beethoven symphonies, but also gems that are not heard very often, like the Rimsky-Korsakov "Procession of the Nobles." A very impressive recording.
Great CD of Classical music's power pieces!.......2005-06-07
I got this CD when I was around 16 because I loved a lot of the music on this double CD set. As a student pursuing a Music Education major, it has been a great asset for my musically, and just great for listening to. I will drive on short trips and take this with me and blast it louder than the guy in the next car blasting rap music. I also take it skiing as it sets a great tempo down the mountain. This is a great CD for anyone that loves music.

Perfect.......2005-02-15
I love classical music but I dont own very much of it, so I thought I would start my collection with Masters of the Bow. What a beautiful selection it was. I just love the sound of a Violin, Joshua Bell is my favorite,I would love to hear more from him. This collection really helps you get to know the masters. Lovely Lovely!
Outstanding.......2004-08-17
I love the violin and this collection is one of my favorites. A great choice for someone like me who doesn't know enough about music and never knows what to buy. It has introduced me to some artists and pieces that I knew nothing about and will help me know what to look for in violin music in the future. This is my favorite but I would also recommend The Cello and Voice CDs in the "Masters of" series. I can't wait for more in this series.

Fantastic !.......2003-03-31
Vengerov has no limit to his technique.beautiful tone, excellent intonation, smart interpretation, and thrilling virtuosity, hardly describe this cd.Itamar Golan also does a very good job as an accompanist, and one cannot make any objections to his level of music making.A Brilliant recording made by an unforgetable artist!
he didn't read the music very carefully..........2002-09-23
A lot of this CD is very impressive- Vengerov clearly has his technique under control, and the Paganini is very well-executed, making it sound easy.
I feel that he's pretty far off the mark with the Messiaen, though. He must not have spent very much time learning this piece, since both the Theme (of the "Theme et variations) and the final section of the piece are played at exactly twice the printed tempo! This completely changes the character of the piece to something that's very different from the meditative quality that the correct tempo markings imply. There are also a few wrong notes- small details, but it does make a difference, considering the emphasis Messiaen placed on harmony. There's a very good Naxos recording of this piece (with the Amici ensemble, Scott St. John, violin) that's worth hearing.
A charming CD of small violin pieces........2000-07-20
Although Vengerov has had his up's and down's, this CD is truely a triumph for him. Vengerov's playing is in top form and he really does each piece justice. The best thing about this CD is the pieces Vengerov picked to record. This is the perfect CD of charming violin miniatures. I haven't yet found a better CD of these sorts of pieces. I especially like the Caprice Basque by Sarasate and the variations by Paganini. But all the songs are very captivating. If you're looking for a good CD of "itsy bitsies", as Heifetz called them, this is it. It's a great gift for someone who isn't really into classical music or for someone who is too.
Excellent grouping of small violin pieces.......1999-07-15
The pieces on this cd are all of the most delightful quality. Vengerov plays them all with beautiful execution and interpretation. One of my favorite cd's. I've yet to find another violin cd that groups together such wonderful little pieces in such a good way!

Orchestral Trumpet Player's Bible:.......2003-05-08
I carry this recording around with me in my case, and listen to it before auditions, concerts, rehearsals, etc. It's simply how the excerpts (along with trumpet playing in general) should sound. Smith's virtuostic playing, coupled with his vast orchestral experience, really teach the parts. All trumpet players, top to bottom, have something to learn from this CD--and while the entire work (with orchestra) and part should be studied (Smith actually recommends this), it is still very useful to hear one of the finest players on earth performing just the trumpet part.
Essential Recording for Any Trumpet Player.......2001-05-24
If any principal orchestral trumpet player has succeeded Adolph Herseth as the "state of the art," the probable consensus among his peers would be Philip Smith of the New York Philharmonic. His virtually flawless technique, gourgeous sound, rarified musicianship and exceptional leadership make him virtually unique in his field, and his more than 20 years with the Philharmonic (plus his early years with the Chicago Symphony) have firmly established him as one of the greats in the history of orchestral brass performance.
Measured simply as a documentation of his skills, this recording would be an extraordinary document - the playing throughout is stupendous. But this is much more than that; Mr. Smith proves to be as articulate (mild "New Yoahk" accent and all) as he is talented, and his performance suggestions are truly helpful, even for those of us without his superhuman abilities. The recorded sound is superb, and overall this is a joy to listen to at every level. I recommend it without reservation for any trumpet player aspiring to a higher level of musicianship and performance - and if you play it at full volume shortly after your warmup, your neighbors will be very impressed.
Most Excellent.......1999-12-13
As a trumpet player, I must say that Phil Smith's comments during each track are immensely beneficial. His thoughts have produced profound understanding in my trumpet playing, and despite the fact that this CD is intended as a grouping of Phil Smith's insights into common Orchestral Excerpts and his following demonstration, I have countless times listened out of pure enjoyment than to gain expert insight. His tone is the most beautiful I have ever heard, and it shows on this CD. I recommend this particularly for any aspiring trumpet student.
Awesome!.......1999-10-25
The previous reviewer of this CD missed the point of the CD. Lets say your working on the Carmern Prelude or Stravinsky Pétrouchka you buy this CD, and learn how Philip Smith (one of the greatest symphonic trumpet players in the world) would interpret and play it. Thats why its entitled Orchestra Trumpet Excerpts.
Excellent for aspiring trumpet players, otherwise..........1999-05-31
This CD would be excellent for aspiring orchestral trumpeters and soloists; although Philip Smith conveys his expertise exceptionally well, this short snips of music on this CD are no substitute for the actual full-orchestra recordings.

Mediocre Tchaikovsky ..........2002-01-25
This Tchaikovsky Recording is a fair one. Perlman has better recordings; namely his performance with the Philadelphia Orchestra. The first movement sounds a bit too rushed and slightly "showman-like" rather than musician like. The Bazzini is slightly scratchy and rushed!! Perlman's pizzacato is also mushed and hard to hear. Listen to Maxim Vengerov's recording of the Bazzini... It's the best I've heard to date.
Great performance; great recording; great occasion.......2001-02-09
This was one of a spate of classical recordings commemorating (or cashing in on) the end of the Cold War. _Bernstein in Berlin_ was one, celebrating the fall of the Berlin wall; a concert featuring Smetana's _Ma Vlast_ on the occasion of the liberation of Czechoslovakia was another. This disc records the first visit of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra to Moscow, in another sign of the communist crackup of the late 80s and early 90s.
Musically, it's sensational. The Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto provides a generous showcase for Mr. Perlman's powers. IMHO it is a bit long, but that's all the more music to enjoy, I suppose. The liner notes contain the very interesting story of how this concerto came about--a famous violinist of Tchaikovsky's day, for whom the work was composed, rejected it for being "unviolinistic"!
The rest of the program features Perlman with a pianist, minus the orchestra. Some pieces, like Wieniawski's "Etudes-Caprices" are really musical bonbons. But reducing the second movement of Tchaikovsky's first string quartet to a single violin and piano is quite a feat. Every musical offering brings down the house; at the end the crowd practically carries him off the stage. The recording is crisp, with a good sense of the hall, with Perlman rightly being given acoustic center stage. A treat!
Don't miss Live in Russia.......2000-02-07
I am a Perlman Lover and I own both the CD and the video of this concert. This performance contains some of my favorite show-pieces for violin, in particular Tchaikovsky's Concerto in D, Tartini's Devil's Trill, Wieniawski's Caprice in A minor, and Bazzini's Le Ronde des Lutins. The Tchaikovsky and Tartini pieces have been favorites of mine for many years and I grew up listening to them being performed by other virtuoso violinists.
Perlman's mastery of the violin is amazing. I prefer his performances to my long-time favorites. But, while I love his performance of each of the pieces individually, the real power of the CD or video for me is knowing that all of the pieces were all performed in a single concert. Hearing (or seeing) his brilliance in performing piece after piece is awe-inspiring. I am always moved to give him a standing ovation after the Bazzini piece that ends the concert. Recently, I listened to the CD with my eight year old son (who never claps for anything). At the end of the CD, even my son was moved to spontaneous applause.
Don't miss this one.
If u didn't buy Itzhak Perlman's recording, start w/this one.......2000-01-24
The first CD of Itzhak Perlman that I bought, was this one, and I couldn't have done better. It's a wonderful CD, w/a breathtaking sound from Perlman's violin. When I first listened it, I comproved how good was him, and and after that CD, I bought other two that were avaible at the store. So, when u want to listen an excelent interpretation of Tchaikovsky's concerto for violin, this is indispensable.
Perlman outstanding.......2000-01-04
I have become a fan of Perlman over the years, and I particularly love the Tchaikovsky concerto, so of course I had to have this one. I bought this disc a few days after hearing Perlman perform this concerto live with the Boston Symphony under Ozawa. This live disc captured perfectly the feeling I had sitting in Symphony Hall hearing this concerto. Perlman was not flawless in concert, neither is he on this disc. But his knowledge and feel for the Russian flavor of the piece is uncanny, and his technique is breathtaking. The orchestra could have been captured a bit better. Perlman's encores on this disc are absolutely unbelievable. If you're buying the Tchaikovsky concerto try Perlman's earlier recording with Philadelphia Orch. under Ormandy, as I think the orchestra is heard much better.

Customer Reviews:
Delightful collection.......2001-03-25
A delightful collection of shorter works for violin with piano accompaniment, some of them extremely familiar, others less so, but with Grumiaux's lyrical style (not flamboyant like Perlman's, but graceful and beautiful in an understated way), and fine accompaniment, the music on these 2 CDs is consistently excellent and can be listened to either consecutively or just a few pieces at a time. Well worth having.
