5 out of 5 stars Memories.......2007-02-20

Wow, all I can say is 'WOW'. This is a fantastic collection. This is what I grew up on and every song brings back memories of a particular time or place in my childhood. I've been buying various 'hits' compilations and many of them are remakes. So you start to listen and think, yea this is it, only to hear the voice that doesn't match your memories. Not so here, this collection is made up of all original recordings so your memories will be intact. Of the collections I've purchsed, it's the best. It can't match new music fidelity, but hey, neither did it in the 60's and 70's.
If you were born in 1958 like me, this will be a golden collection. I just wish it was a series and there were more sets like this one.

2 out of 5 stars Why listen to it for free when you can pay for it?.......2006-03-07

ClearChannel strikes again! First they bought up all the rights to the great classic rock bands music; then they saw to it that any NEW music those bands recorded would never see the light of day (BTO, Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet, and many others are still making great records, but ClearChannel radio stations will not play them); now, they're spitting out their own Digital K-Tel compilations.

To their credit, this is a pretty good batch of music. It's missing a few great bands, simply because those are the bands that didn't sell their souls over to ClearChannel to pay off the dealers and bookies. Rush, Zeppelin, Floyd, The Stones, Springsteen, AC/DC, all not here because they held on to the rights to their music. Smart move guys. They can still get their new material played.

So, if you live in a rural area where the nearest classic rock radio station just doesn't come in to good, pick this up. Otherwise, you really don't have to look to far to find this stuff, and ClearChannel really doesn't need anymore of your money to encourage them to continute bastardizing the music industry.

3 out of 5 stars Classic Rock Gold.......2006-01-03

Classic Rock "Gold" is a double disc of classic rock's best. This 2-fer does have some good songs, but it also has some awkward inclusions. I had heard of most of these songs, but there's a few that I hadn't. Somehow I don't think those few should qualify as "classic" or "gold".

I wonder if this might have been better off as a single disc crammed to the maximum capacity. Still, buying this 2-disc set is much better than buying all the individual albums.

Overall Classic Rock Gold is a nice collection. It's just not that awe-inspiring. I'd say it's worth a Used purchase price.

4 out of 5 stars + 1/2 stars...Solid Collection of Classic Rock Songs.......2005-08-16

The term "classic rock" means different things to different people. In my mind, it's that decade from 1964 to about 1975. For others, it's the decade of the Fifties. In the liner notes of this compilation, the "golden age" of Classic Rock has been defined as the FM radio era beginning in 1968 and ending in 1987. They further define a Classic Rock song as "snatching the listener out of the humdrum here and now, and taking off..."

A quick look at the track list on this collection will certainly beg the question: Hey, where's _____? (Fill in your favorite song and/or artist.) Just keep in mind that Hip-O is limited by licensing restrictions. So what you wind up with are 33 songs (disc 2 actually concludes with Whitesnake's "Here I Go Again") that dominate FM radio playlists to this day.

I have only a couple quibbles with this collection. While it covers the span from 1968 to 1987, there is only one song ("Born To Be Wild) from The Sixties and five from The Eighties. Also, where are the AOR artists that produced great music, but didn't focus on hit singles? Artists like Pink Floyd, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Led Zeppelin, The Allman Brothers, etc. All but a handful of songs on these two discs went Top 40, and nearly half went Top 10.

But that's a minor complaint. Overall, this is a solid collection of some of the era's best know (and best loved) songs. For maximum effect, PLAY THIS MUSIC LOUD! [Running Time - Disc 1 75:31, Disc 2 68:19] HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

4 out of 5 stars Blooze.......2006-09-07

A funny thing happens whenever a band makes it big. There's a mad dash to replicate the same formula, in an attempt to achieve the same success. It rarely ever works. Witness the mad rush to emulate Nirvana's success. During 1992, any band carrying a guitar in Seattle could get a record deal. And look at the number of bands that tried to grab hold of Korn's coat tails. There is now a generation of younger people who believe guitars all have seven strings, and bass guitars five.

Before Grunge and Nu-Metal were inflicted upon the world, there was a gold rush way out west. The race was on to find the next Guns N' Roses. Hindsight tells us now that the search was fruitless, but if a few things had turned out differently, like a little luck here, or the right amount of exposure there, it may have changed the course of history.

Many bands tried their luck, but fell by the wayside, due to lack of talent or good ideas. Some were never going to make it. Imagine if the likes of Bang Tango or Sea Hags or Circus Of Power had actually made some impression on the world. And then, some bands deserved success, but it never came, like Junkyard.

Junkyard's self-titled debut is a slab of sleaze, one part social commentary, one part celebration of the seamy side of life. While often lumped in with the hairspray and make-up Glam brigade, Junkyard's music has a harder, darker edge than much of the party time Pop emerging from LA at the end of the '80s. This album combines the best traditions of beer-soaked bar room Rock with old fashioned Blues boogie, sounding like a swaggering mutation of Motörhead and ZZ Top.

There are a number of highlights to be savoured. The laid back piano tinkling of "Simple Man" pre-dates the Gunners' `Use Your Illusion' albums and the ever awful Black Crowes, even if it sounds a little dated and clichéd now. David Roach's bourbon croaked vocals spin out a surprisingly gentle melody. "Hollywood" is a starry eyed anthem dedicated to Tinsel Town and its excesses. "Long Way Home" is a traditional drunken Blues number, like George Thoroughgood on heroin, played so slow it's almost going backwards.

Album closer "Hands Off" is the ultimate "get lost, I'm better off without you" song. Roach sounds like he's going to burst into tears at any moment because his girlfriend wants a bit of space, until he discovers she's sleeping with his best mate, and suddenly his resolve hardens. He belts out the chorus of the song with much gusto, which should be a drunken karaoke favourite of anyone who's ever been wronged by a woman.

Ultimately, Junkyard made only a small ripple in the wake of Guns N' Roses, missing the opportunities picked up by less deserving and less talented bands. Junkyard recorded a second album, `Sixes, Sevens And Nines' but by then it was too late. Guitarist Brian Baker went on to join Bad Religion. However, if this album conveys anything, it is that Junkyard deserve to be more than just a side note to Bad Religion's family tree.

5 out of 5 stars blues,southern rock,glam..... what else ?.......2006-08-09

well, the title explains it all. I listened to this album the first time while I was touring Europe in 1993, and I can say that it really was the best soundtrack for that. I've been drinking, driving, travelling (by train)..."having fun"... partying all night long, and I never got bored about this. All friends were used to say "Junk who ?".... but now many of them have already this album in their rooms. Besides this, this is one of the best sleazy rock & glam album of all times. You can find southern rock, blues & glam at the same time. I'm wondering why they did not have the same success like GnR did. They mixed the southern blues with glam & blues, not very easy. It's not even easy to find an album with all tracks possible #1. No song is weak, all are incredible, the fast tracks make you drive through the desert or bang your head inside your room. The ballads make you dream about having your sweetheart on your side..... one easy example : the first song. "Blooze" is one of those song that want to make you hanging around and screaming down the streets and listening to your favourite music as loud as possible in your car stereo. "Hands Off" makes me wanna stay inside my room by myself, singing it as loud as possible, and dreaming about flying, anywhere I want. Let your soul & deep inside come out with this album, this is really gonna touch your heart and make you ride anywhere, anytime... I suggest listening to this album , while you're travelling.

been looking off and on for this cd. SO was very happy with it.

4 out of 5 stars Turn It Up.......2006-05-31

I thought I was the only one who heard this band until now. I heard this album along with Dangerous Toys back when I was 17 when this girl was dating turn down the lights lit incence and candles cracked open some JD and fired up a joint and layed me out, more ways in one. Great drinking, partying, driving, or kicking back album highly recomended for any collection of underated hard rock.

4 out of 5 stars Greatest undiscovered rock band of the 80's/90's!!.......2006-04-09

This is a great straight-on rock n roll band. Great guitar and raw vocals, no posers or spandex here, just good ol' blue jean and beer breath rock. I have all of their albums and would recommend their live CD 'Shut up...we're tryin' to Practice' as their best.

5 out of 5 stars The best one!.......2007-03-18

I was always more a fan of Slash's guitar work and tone on the GNR albums than of the songs themselves (with a few notable exceptions). In my opinion, guitar-wise, this album is way more 'raw' and 'gritty' than the others. Slash's solos are absolutely perfect and full of emotion (Ain't It Fun being a good example), and his rhythm playing is devastating. It's hard not to smile listening to the menacing opening of 'Down on the Farm' or 'Black Leather'. Through and through this album just kicks, with none of the over-produced feel of the UYI albums. Axl's voice is in top shape as well and the choice of songs here provides a wide array of musical styles (still punk though), resulting in a very well-rounded album. That's why, ironically, the only non-original Guns N Roses album is also my favourite.

4 out of 5 stars the last cd was their final.......2007-01-11

some song are good, but still guns n' roses was the best. recomented only if you collect their cd's

1 out of 5 stars The String Cheese Incident forever!.......2006-11-07

Axel Rose should be ashamed of himself. What the hell is the spaghetti incident? this album should be called string cheese incident and include only string cheese incident covers! This is a covers album and none of the songs have to do with spaghetti!

Or do they?

1. Since I Don't Have You - Axl is upset his b*tch Stephanie Seymour didn't cook him spaghetti tonight. His love for GUns N ROses since he doesnt' have his spaghetti.

2. New Rose - Axl breaks up the original Guns N Roses to create Nu-GNR aka New Rose

3. Down On The Farm - Axel goes down tot he farm to recruit a new GNR lineup as well as having hopes in finding a bowl of spaghetti

4. Human Being - Yeah, human beings eat spaghetti

5. Raw Power - Axel punches his woman with raw power because she didn't make him his spaghetti! The Spaghetti incident track!

6. Ain't It Fun - No, making spaghetti is not fun which is why your woman didn't make it axel.

7. Buick Makane/Big Dumb Sex - Buick Makane is the name of the guy who replaced Axel. Big Dumb Sex is about Axel's sick love for spaghetti. IIIIIIIIIII want to do is F F F F F U!!!!

8. Hair of the Dog - Some spaghetti sauce was found on a hair of a dog.

9. Attitude - Axel punches out a waiter for giving him attitude about his order of spaghetti at wojno's garage.

10. Black LEather - Spaghetti spills all over the black leather seats in axel's limo

11. You Can't Put Your Arm Around a Memory - No you can't without a bowl of spaghetti

12. I Don't Care About You - Axel doesn't care about his fans or GNR or NU-GNR... jsut about his bowl of spaghetti!

4 out of 5 stars great.......2006-08-12

there are the big albums i.e appetit for destructio n the illusions n then they were the little 1s like lies n the spagetti incident they were like fiilers for the big ones brilliant fillers though i think they were probaly going to make another big album after the spag...... but broke up before that could happen well any it is a very good album n i dont no why people nock so what if its a load of covers its still good. i think gnr should come back n finish what they started a brilliant massive new albumwith the original members because they did not go out with a bang n what they were rememberd for (honest, nasty, mean, brilliant, livin on the edge, Raw,ect)

5 out of 5 stars Lean and mean.......2006-06-07

The Spaghetti Incident? is a tight album. I love the megalomaniac GN'R numbers with huge sound on their other albums, but this one is great for it's back-to-roots punk numbers delivered in full force. The covers are better than the originals, which weren't bad themselves (I checked the originals out, like they suggest). If I have a bad day and put this album on the world's right with me again. The sheer energy and the FU attitude is pretty cleansing. The album is avoid of any "fat". It's a lean mean rock'n'roll machine.

4 out of 5 stars Great except for one serious flaw..........2007-03-04

Great comp, great sound, great price. All the charting singles are here along with a generous helping of album tracks. However, there is one glaring omission...WHERE THE HECK IS THE TITLE TRACK FROM "DENIM AND LEATHER"? Although not one of their hits, it is surely one of their most beloved anthems. I simply can't believe that it didn't make it on this collection. Other than that, this set is rock solid.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful blend of romantic songs.......2006-08-20

Forget Celine Dion and the other fluff on the "light rock" stations, for children of the 80s like myself, this is the stuff romantic moments are made of.

5 out of 5 stars Wanna ride in my Trans Am?.......2005-11-09

This is a FUN double-disc collection. Power Ballads Gold has some awfully bad (in a good way) songs on it. There were a few songs I had never heard before, but they definitely fit the hair-band mold.

Definitely cheesey. Definitely worth the money. This is much better than buying all of the individual band's CDs, which probably only have one or a few good songs on them.

Rock out with your air guitar! Good songs for singing extremely loudly on the way home from work!

5 out of 5 stars It has it all !!!.......2005-11-04

This CD has songs from the 70's, 80's and 90's. I have many other sets and honestly they do have some of these songs but this set is my favorite. This set has alot of songs that should have been on the others but were overlooked. Theres no crappy filler here anyone who likes this music must check this one out.

4 out of 5 stars The only with Steve Vai.......2007-06-28

I don't want to talk bad about this great rock band, I don't want to talk about Steve Vai in this record, but I want to say one thing, this is not the real sound of WHITESNAKE, this is not my favorite album of WHITESNAKE, this is not my favorite album of STEVE VAI, but the song judgement day is a great song, is like kashmir of led zeppelin!

3 out of 5 stars Slip of the Tongue = a mixed bag of snakes.......2007-01-10

The knives were out for this one. To tell the truth, no matter what this sounded like it was going to cop a hammering given the attitude of certain elements of the hard rock press - especially in the UK. Additional to this was the fact that Steve Vai had been drafted in on guitar for a very hefty fee and there were justified concerns his playing style was totally unsuited to Whitesnake. Not to mention that the cover artwork was similar to that of the 1987 album (a ruse repeated for the '94 Greatest Hits) and this smacked a little of desperation.

So at first glance it's a case of low expectations despite the hope for another great disc as per 1987. And once you get to the music it's pretty clear that this is a hit and miss selection of songs. No complaints with the title track or the follow up cut Cheap an' Nasty. Or the remake of Fool For Your Loving which some felt was sacrilegious in some way. But stuff 'em! Now Your Gone is a decent enough ballad and Vai gets to flex his guitar in all sorts of unnatural ways in Kittens Got Claws but things get a little sketchy as the album moves on. It's not that Slow Poke Music or Judgement Day (an attempt to write another Still of the Night) are poor, it's just that they aren't great. And the more shiny hollow - or gutless, take your pick - production job doesn't help given the awesome power in the recording of 1987 which had more grit and fibre in one song than any three or four of the tracks on display here.

Not to mention that while he's a great guitarist, Vai proved the critics right by not really fitting the more bluesy hard rock mould of the 'snake. Not his fault, the guy is insanely talented in my opinion, but his style just isn't right for these songs. Though at least his inclusion did mean that the 'snake boasted (count 'em) two guitar gods for the tour. Which for some six string aficianados probably made it worthwhile buying a concert ticket regardless of whether they liked the album or not.

The real deal? Not as good as 1987 but few albums are. Some good songs are here but not as well produced and lacking the feel of a Whitesnake record, sounding like this was a job for all involved as there is just no feel on this album at all.

5 out of 5 stars Love It.......2006-07-16

I have worn out several of these over the years. It is just that Good if you are into Hair Metal.

5 out of 5 stars Steve vai rules.......2006-03-24

Whitesnake suck as a band every cd complete rubbish the only thing making this one great and i mean great is Steve Vai(GOD) on the guitar he blows everyone else in the band away, so if you must buy a whitesnake cd make it this one and then look into Steve Vai's work as its the best you will hear ever

5 out of 5 stars Awesome music for rockers!.......2006-03-20

This CD is great. It has some really hooky tunes and the guitar playing by Steve Vai is phenomenal. I don't know why people give Steve Vai so much criticism for this album as I really do think his playing brings alot of excitement to the Whitesnake sound. Coverdale's vocal melodies are really strong too. Compared to Whitesnake's legendary 1987 album with John Sykes on guitar (which I also love), the sound of this album is a bit more commercial and produced. Personally I think it was a positive move even though most Whitesnake fans probably don't agree.

5 out of 5 stars This Is What It Was All About.......2007-01-10

This CD should be ranked up there with Metallica's Master of Puppets and Megadeth's Peace Sells. This was groundbreaking Metal and still holds it own nearly 20 years later. From the infamous San Francisco Thrash movement, Death Angel's Act III is an absolute must for any serious Headbanger's collection.

5 out of 5 stars Prog. Thrash at its best.......2006-01-13

Act III is the best prog-metal album ever produced. The production quality is obvious within the first thirty seconds. These guys must have poured their hearts and souls into this record. Seemingly Endless Time and Stop have more tricks and surprises than most metal albums in their entirety. Veil of Deception and Room With a View are acoustic wonders. Musically and production-wise these songs hold no imperfections. Aside from Everlast, I don't think anyone has done this well recording acoustic hard rock. Discontinued...This song is an absolute masterpiece. The guitar changes gears from Hendrix/Foxy Lady style hooks to balls out metal shredding. Somewhere in the introduction, there's a funk/bass thing reminisent of Infectious Grooves-style jam metal paired with incredible drum rhythms most would use only as fills. About two minutes pass before the singing kicks in, and it's the most intense two minutes of the album. I know some feel that Osegueda's vocals are tough to get used to but not any harder than Bobby Blitz from Overkill or the snarls of Dave Mustaine. He has a clear, non-Dio, vocal styling a little different from the average metal god (think Flotsam and Jetsam's Eric AK without the perilling screams). I can't say enough about this album. It's not mindless thrash fun like Exodus or Nuclear Assault, but it's not overly amazing musical witchery like Dream Theater either. Musically, a modern-day cohort would be System of a Down. If you are a musician and Master of Puppets or Peace Sells is your favorite metal album of all time, I would say this would come in around 5 or 6 (after South of Heaven and Vulgar Display of power). They are different from every other band in their time, so don't expect "the same old thrash album." The trick to enjoying the record is listening to it the whole way through. Listen to it cranked up and be ready to rock. The overly reverbed snare that kicks Seemingly Endless Time into gear will rip you apart.

5 out of 5 stars Good old school thrash!.......2005-09-09

I just bought this to replace the scratched copy in my collection, but have owned this since back in the day. I believe this was Death Angel's last studio album before forming The Organization. Great for what it is. Has a lot of slower tempo stuff than their 2 previous thrash monsters, but the music is still great. Any Death Angel fan should own this in their collection~it's cheap no matter where you get it. Songs like Seemingly Endless Time are worth owning this. If you like it a bit harder, check out their first two The Ultraviolence and Frolic Through The Park.

2 out of 5 stars Casualty of the Grunge Movement? My Ass! - These Guys Suck!.......2005-06-29

Ok, sorry for being so blunt, but this CD sucks from beginning to end....

First, I remember loving 1 song by these guys back in the old days, growing up in the late 80s....The song was Thrashers from the Ultra-Violence album....I saw this CD on Amazon for $2.00, so I figured I'd see how they progressed over the years....

The CD starts off hard, fast, and powerful....Ok, then after that 5 seconds of adrenalin (literally, 5 seconds), these old guys apparently need a breather, because everything afterward is slow and powerless (except MAYBE 2 mediocre songs at the end of the CD)....

In my opinion, Thrash is supposed to make you want to jump out into the middle of a moshpit and release all your adrenalin....Bang your head, pump your fists, and just go nutty....You will get none of that from this CD....

The production quality is much greater than their stuff in the late 80s, but that's most likely just because of cheaper technology....Ok, that's the only positive I can think of about this CD....seriously....

These guys do absolutely nothing original or exciting on this CD, no wild guitar playing, no fast powerful drum beats, absolutely nothing....It's just crunchy guitar riff after crunchy guitar riff, switching up the pace from slow to slower and back to slow again with no apparent rhyme or reason to any of it....And the singer is by far, the worst part of this band....It seems he tries to sing, but has the most monotoned voice possible, and cannot hold a note....He also sings with absolutely no passion at all....

I am so glad I only paid $2.00 for this, any more and I'd be demanding my money back....Stay away from this CD!

5 out of 5 stars The ultimate early KISS collection.......2007-05-13

This set is a great way to add some KISS to your CD collection. I like KISS, but I'm not a super fan. Before I bought this, the only other KISS CD I had was Double Platinum. This two-disc set has almost all the KISS anyone needs from 74-81, aside from the Alive albums. All the famous early tracks are here, some in live form. The set also includes some strong album cuts from the first albums, but it also shows that KISS was never all that consistent. Even though it only focuses on the early years the downturn is already apparent on disc two. By the time they got around to creating metal-disco, the creative spark was almost gone (and Peter Criss had been replaced by studio musicians on some tracks). Having said that, this is prime classic rock and it has more hooks and is more fun than your average hard rock outfit from the 70s. Since it includes not one but at least two all-time rock anthems "Shout it Loud" and "Rock n Roll All Night," it's really a no-brainer if you don't own any KISS CDs. Those who are KISS fans already have all this to begin with, I'm sure.

4 out of 5 stars Kiss Gold.......2007-03-31

I never joined the KISS Army, owned any of their action figures or any KISS jewelery, however, I did consider them one of my favorite bands when I was younger, This 2 CD set has all the hits that made them a hit with me. I was glad to hear that the version of Detroit Rock City is the full one with the "diner" sounds at the beginning. Great CD, I am happy that I bought it.

5 out of 5 stars The Very Best of KISS' Golden Years.......2007-03-23

This 2-disc set is really the best collection of KISS tracks from the golden years of the band. Every die-hard wishes they could personally customize greatest hits CDs to make them better, but I wouldn't change a thing with KISS Gold.

Yes, KISS seems to have way too many complilation CDs on the market, but this one truly is truly worth the money. Even as a die hard fan, I like this CD set.

Double Platinum has always been a highly regarded hits package since it covered the best songs from KISS at their very, very best. Unfortunately with Double Platinum, many of the songs were sonically tweeked for the worse and only included a single song from the Love Gun album and nothing from their legendary Alive albums.

With KISS Gold, you get half of their incredible first album, over half of the Destroyer album and the entire 4th side (for those who remember records) of KISS Alive! in this collection. How cool is that??

You also get rarities like one selection from each of the solo albums and two great unreleased-in-America tracks ("Nowhere To Run" and "I'm A Legend Tonight") to close out the second CD.

Fan favorites like "Parasite", "Tonight You Belong To Me", "Talk To Me" and the live version of "God of Thunder" are on here as well.

I'm someone who owns every KISS album and I still enjoy throwing this one in the CD player. 20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best of Kiss, Vol. 2 is a great companion to KISS Gold because it picks up chronologically right where this album leaves off.

I highly recommend this album to those who might not want to buy all the early KISS albums, but craves a deeper selection of songs than what most other KISS hits compilations have to offer.

4 out of 5 stars a comment on your service.......2006-11-04

Hi: Thanks for your invitation for a review of my recent purchases.
As you know, I bought this great Gold album by Kiss. Unfortunately, I received it damaged, the case was broken and one of the two Cd's was damaged (some songs are unaudible).
Well, I have not send this item back because I live in Mexico City and it may cost much more to send it than buying it again.
However, I'd rather let you know that this happened and it would be good if you try to avoid this kind of inconveniences to your customers.
In the past, I've received some other cases damaged or broken, but this was the first time ever that the CD was damaged too.
Well, thanks for your attention.
Sincerely,
Alberto Huidobro

4 out of 5 stars Very Good Compilation.......2006-08-21

This is one of the better compilations I've seen put together by any group, and definitely the best KISS compilation. I would change only a few things about this cd- I would use studio versions of all the live tracks (Rock Bottom, Cold Gin, Rock 'n' Roll All Nite, Let Me Go Rock 'n' Roll, Making Love, God of Thunder), with the exception of Rock 'n' Roll All Nite; I would include 100,000 Years; and I would have left off the last 2 or 3 songs (they feel like a totally different style than the rest of the album). But this is a near perfect compilation of the peak years of KISS. I'd like to see another Gold cd which covered the 80's and 90's (which is where the last three tracks on this one belong).

This album is definitely worth buying.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Coverdale woos women!.......2007-06-27

This is one of those rare collections that is pleasing to listen to song after song uninterrupted. David Coverdales' fabulously rich rhythm and blues voice wails, cajoles, howls, pleads and projects a lusty yearning for women that we love to hear. His unique testosterone loaded vocals are backed up by the phenominally talented cast of musicians that can bring very sophisticated rock sound rolling on and on. The lyrics are sometimes rather canned formula rock but who cares when Coverdale is howling! He could sear the labels off soup cans with that throat. Amazing man, amazing band.

5 out of 5 stars Extensive Whitesnake/Coverdale package.......2007-06-25

THE BAND: David Coverdale and an assortment of players from the late 1970's through the late 90's. Most notably playing on one or more Whitesnake albums: John Sykes (guitar), Steve Vai (guitar), Adrian Vandenberg (guitar), Micky Moody (guitar), Rudy Sarzo (bass), Neil Murray (bass), Jon Lord (keyboards/organ), Tommy Aldridge (drums), Aynsley Dunbar (drums), Ian Paice (drums), Cozy Powell (drums).

THE DISC: (2006) 33 songs on 2 discs clocking in at approximately 155 minutes (Disc-1 at 77 minutes, Disc-2 at 78). Included with the disc is an 18-page booklet containing band photos through the years, a 4-page intro to the band, song titles/credits, what songs came from which albums, and Billboard chart success. This compilation follows the band from 1978-93 (with the exception of the unreleased track). Label - Geffen.

ALBUM REPRESENTATION: Trouble (2 songs), Snakebite (1), Love Hunter (3), Ready An' Willing (3), Live in The Heart Of The City (2), Come An' Get It (2), Saints & Sinners (1), Slide It In (5), Whitesnake (5), Slip Of The Tongue (5), Coverdale/Page (2), Soundtrack/Days Of Thunder (1), Unreleased (1).

COMMENTS: If Geffen's 18-track "Definitive Collection" from the same year isn't enough, this "Gold" collection will most surely do the trick. THE GOOD: The staples are all here - "Ain't No Love In The Heart Of The City", "Fool For Your Loving" (2x), "Victim Of Love", "Slide It In", "Slow An' Easy", "Love Ain't No Stranger", "Here I Go Again", "Still Of The Night", "Give Me All Your Love", "Crying In The Rain", "Is This Love", "The Deeper The Love", "Judgment Day", etc. The deep album cuts are plentiful - "Trouble", "Ain't Gonna Cry No More", "Blindman", "Sailing Ships", and extremely happy to see the 10-minute live "Mistreated" and "Might Just Take Your Life" (old Deep Purple tracks) from "Live In The Heart Of The City". Liner notes are extensive. The songs are in chronological order so you can hear the band change over the decades - with the exception of the last track on disc-2, "We Wish You Well" (taken from the early "Love Hunter"). The disc space is utilized to its fullest, and the remastered sound is crisp. THE NOT SO GOOD: Disc-1 rocks. Disc-2 has as many power ballads as it does rockers... but this was the direction of the band and its music. Don't get me wrong - this is a great set of discs - but my Whitesnake preference lies in the harder/faster songs. Only 1 song each from underrated albums "Snakebite" and "Saints & Sinners". Geffen hit the nail on the head with "Gold" as far as the track selection goes. However, there are a few less critical songs that could/should be here - "Bad Boys", "Slip Of The Tongue", "Hungry For Love" - and perhaps a few deeper tracks including "Child Of Babylon", "Whisper A Prayer For The Dying" (Coverdale/Page), and maybe a song or two from Coverdale's solo albums ("Restless Heart" and/or "Into The Light"). There are 5 remix/alternative mix selections here (many listeners may prefer the original studio versions... like me). The unreleased track is a throwaway... closer to a Michael Bolton song than Whitesnake. The negative remarks here are extremely minor in the scheme of things. OVERALL: A fantastic intro to David Coverdale and Whitesnake - if you're looking for an in-depth compilation, this "Gold" is the place to start (5 stars).

5 out of 5 stars Whitesbake at it's best.......2006-11-04

Whitesnake Gold is a great collection of songs. It has the great oldies and the great new ones. It also contains some unreleased songs. It's a great CD set.

5 out of 5 stars Great Music...Great Band...Great Vocalist .......2006-08-22

This is a great compilation album, what can I say I love Whitesnake & David Coverdale.

What I don't agree with Footpath "rockusa2002" review is about the drug dealer from Audtralia who is now being punished in my country, Indonesia. Everybody has concience but NOT for drug dealers! Death sentence is the best solution for drug dealers.

No more talk about drugs, lets just enjoy the great music from Whitesnake.

5 out of 5 stars Whitesnake Gets The Anthology They Deserve.......2006-08-08

With the double-disc GOLD, Whitesnake get the double-disc anthology that they truly deserve. This collection starts in 1978, and goes right into the 90s, ending with 1979's "We Wish You Well." The early material (up to and including 1984), when they were a heavy metal version of Southern rock, is very much preferable to the late-80s stuff, when they were basically a higher-brow version of L.A. glam metal bands such as Ratt and Motley Crue. Despite the surprising number of alternate mixes here, lead singer David Coverdale's belief that the young Australian tourist jailed in Indonesia since 2005 for drug-smuggling was wrongfully convicted makes GOLD an essential purchase for both your ears AND your conscience.

Proof positive that the Toxic Twins should never be apart, Done with Mirrors was Aerosmith's first album since Joe Perry returned to the band in 1985. Though it didn't garner as much commercial success as did the follow-up Permanent Vacation, this album is in many ways truer to the heart of what Aerosmith was in their 1970s heyday. From the opening drive of "Let the Music Do the Talking" (which reuses that great riff from 1977's "Draw the Line"), to the strong grooves of "The Reason a Dog" and "Gypsy Boots," to the rockin' shuffle of "The Hop," Done with Mirrors is full of strong moments. The two best tracks on the album, though, show Aerosmith heading back to their roots: the swampy rock of "She's On Fire" and the jive-to-drive of "Darkness," both of which have the raw, bluesy base of the band's best material. If nothing else, Done with Mirrors indicated that Aerosmith may have been down, but they definitely weren't out of the running yet--something that Permanent Vacation would prove two years later. --Genevieve Williams

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Nice rockin' album!.......2007-05-16

I just recently bought this album back & I'm glad that I did! I can't believe that I sold it before! This is definitely a traditional sounding Aerosmith album, not a huge album like 'Pump' or 'Permanent Vacation,' but it has plenty of good grooves & it's nice for when you need a quick fix of hard rock when you are on the go. It's definitely worth it to pick up if you are an Aerosmith fan especially of the 80s.

3 out of 5 stars Not A Bad Comeback.......2007-02-12

This was a very exciting time to be an Aerosmith fan
The original members were regrouping to record their first new album in a long time...The result was 'Done With Mirrors'

The debut single was great 'Let The Music Do The Talking' with the video that went with it got the attention of the music world, but they never released a second single, not quite sure why because there were many songs certainly up to the task
the second song on the CD 'My Fist Your Face'is very catchy classic Aerosmith...then comes 'Shame On You' this song gets a little repetitive but it isn't awful, then comes 'The Reason A Dog' which is awesome and should have been a single, very clever lyrics and catchy melody..then comes 'Shela' a pretty good tune with quite a bit of atmosphere, not a standout tune but not bad, then comes the weakest song (in my opinion) Gypsy Boots which has the classic Aerosmith sound but is just too repetitive and dare I say boring...then comes a highly underrated song 'She's On Fire' which would have been the perfect song to release a video for,it has a perfect beat for girls to dance to (which all those who read my reviews know how important that is to me) the song is just oozing sexuality and should have been a single...the next song is 'The Hop' which is pure classic Aerosmith, has a swing beat to it and is very memorable, great song...the CD ends with pure atmosphere 'Darkness' which actually sounds similar to the stuff from 'Rock In A Hard Place' (the previous Aerosmith release) a very cool tune to just sit back and groove to
so what went wrong, the majority of the songs are either above average or great, well what happened was the production sucks (sorry, just being honest with my opinion) which came as a total shock as Ted Templeman produced this and he was the mastermind behind the classic Van Halen sound...but with Done With Mirrors the band just sounds dull and lifeless and empty...
there is really no other way to describe it,however the band did fix that problem with all their future releases

The Upside - Many great songs, the band sounds great and Steven Tyler sings with that unmistakable tone that all Aerosmith fans love, the clever lyrics are there and so are the hooks, the highlights are 'She's On Fire','Let The Music Do The Talking',and 'The Hop'

The Downside - The production is awful, and there are a few filler songs

The Bottom Line - If you are an Aerosmith fan you should have this for your collection,if for no other reason 'She's On Fire' should be a timeless Aerosmith classic in the same league as 'Walk This Way'
However I would recommend starting with a greatest hits package first if you are new to the band, not a bad comeback album but the best was definitely yet to come...donutman says so!!!

4 out of 5 stars The BOYS return!!.......2007-02-03

Wow! I can't believe it! An editorial review that actually hits the mark! Yeah, this was a good album, straight ahead, hard rocking, the boys trying to get it together again. Later on, their albums got more and more pop, or soft for me, but Mirrors has some damn good rock on it. They could always bring it in concert, but the albums after this were mostly mellower affairs. I saw them on the Permanent Vacation tour, and as a child of the 70's, (who had never seen them) it was a dream come true! They were simply excellent. If you like 1970's Aerosmith, you will like this album, if you only know later albums, you may find this "too simple", not enough "creativity". nuff said.

3 out of 5 stars The Original Band Is Back With Mixed Results.......2007-01-25

Perry and Whitford are back, the results are rather ho hum. Like "Rock" the album is not bad, but there is nothing that really stands out either. It opens with "Let The Music Do The Talking" which was a solo hit for Joe Perry from his solo album of the same name. "My Fist Your Face" is a decent rocker. The album ends fairly strong with "She's On Fire", "The Hop", and "Darkness" which are all decent tunes. Overall an average Aerosmith album.
