Give Me Sanity

About the Artist
Karen Nunis Blackstone has achieved renown throughout pockets of Asia and America as a visual artist, and now stands to make her mark in the global village music scene as well. Having been born into a family of singers and artists in tropical Malaysia, in the former Portuguese colonial town of Malacca, she demonstrates soulful lessons well learnt in her family and the local catholic church choir. Her father was a rock n roll artist, but Karen outgrew rock and choirs and orthodoxies, having gone her own way in forging sounds of the future with the voices of her ancestors.

Performers
Karen Nunis Blackstone, vocals & acoustic guitar Tommaso Cecere, acoustic and electric bass Yuki Kasai, acoustic and electric guitar Badar Abdullah, shakers, congas, djembe and tambourine Julian Mokhtar, slide, acoustic and electric guitar Muhar Diman, seruling and Chinese bamboo flute Gary Gideon, drums Brad Blackstone, blues harp Virginia Nunis Meta, accompanying vocals Fiona Urie Tutin, accompanying vocals

Album Description
Give Me Sanity is a collection of songs written by this Malaccan- Portuguese-Malaysian songbird and her harp-playing American husband. In a melodic sense, it's musical news for the 21st century, combining sounds from instruments as diverse as the Indonesian seruling flute and Western double bass, the African djembe and acoustic slide guitar. Thematically, the lyrics carry forward those universal concerns from all previous epochs, from questions of identity and jealousy in a relationship, to the pain of loss, fear of calamity, and the wonder of being able to love. Give Me Sanity, in the voice of Karen Nunis Blackstone, makes these themes ring fresh again.

5 out of 5 stars Feel Good CD.......2001-07-21

Karen Nunis Blackstone has a way of improving my mood with her upbeat and pleasant music. Her beautiful voice merges well with the varied instrumental backgrounds to produce a CD that keeps finding its way into my player.

5 out of 5 stars !.......2000-07-16

Typically Soul Drenched and extraordinarily well crafted album, combining Blues with World Rhythms and a slight pinch of jazz & Funk, this album scores bigtime and redefines what has now become "World Beat".Fantastic!.

5 out of 5 stars Sanity found..........2000-07-15

On this CD, ...[the] poetic lyrics and Karen's vocals combine
like raspberries and chocolate, creating a delicious counterpoint to
each other -- bringing out the best of each. The influences of blues,
rock and jazz are evident in their work, though their sound is
definitely their own. Karen Nunis Blackstone has the ability to
transport the listener to another plane with the smoky incense of her
voice. In "it's a wonder", the opening measures of this
song take the listener to that place where sensuality and an aching
heart meet- a theme that has been done in many ways, but seldom as
effectively as this. In "drivin' down the berm" Karen is
joined on vocals by Virginia Nunis Meta. The perfect blend of their
voices and along with Yuki Kasia's guitar and Daddy Peet's blues
harp together drive this the song hard and strong-- enough to raise
one's pulse and feel the need to move. The sweet surprise of this CD
is the addition of Muhar Diman's seruling and Chinese flute
playing. Karen's voice and Muhar's tones twist, turn, dive and rise
in a dance of melody with complimentary dexterity and deftness. This
collection of music, with it's luscious music and intelligent lyrics,
is both a treat for the ear and the mind.
