Face down on the bar: THE GREAT CRUSADES look at life through a shot glass lens...
Mojo
The band's sinewy spag-western country and tough folk-punk on The First Spilled Drink of the Evening (Trocadero) is a perfect match.
Album Description
With all my worldly possessions Sanford-and-Son-ed in the back of Brian Leachs Toyota pickup, I arrived in Chicago about 11:30 p.m. on May 16, 1998. With a welcoming party from Leach and my new roommate, Brian Hunt, I promptly proceeded to lose my mind and the next day, my keys. Such was the first night at my new home-a big loft at North and Oakley avenues, in Wicker Park. I started writing the songs on this CD soon after, with the help of Hunt, Leach, and Christian Moder, who had recently relocated here from Los Angeles. The songs were all done within about a year, but we figured we better try em out and see what stuck. So, we did a tour of Germany and Austria to play the new songs and to support the European release of The First Spilled Drink of the Evening in May 1999. But most of the songs were inspired by experiences we all had right here in Chicago. What this means is that if you hear places and names in the songs that sound real, they usually are. Cases in point with the Hungry Brain, the Pontiac Cafe, and Bernadette, a lady I met right on the front step of my new place. It seems only appropriate that we did much of the recording for Damaged Goods in that very loft-some in the basement, some in the main room. We actually recorded on the street corner, so dont be surprised if you hear some cars, buses, or trucks passing by. We also again enlisted Adam Schmitt (and his studio), without whom none of this would have been in any way possible, to produce, fix all the rough spots, and keep us endlessly entertained with his archives of famous studio outtakes. Youll also hear from other folks we enlisted who played horns, strings, and percussion; snapped fingers and clapped hands; rambled drunkenly and yelled nonsense; broke bottles and valuables; and generally made the recording sessions a great time. And so, without any further adieu, heres how they turned out. We decided to call it Damaged Goods.

I Love This Girl!.......2007-01-05
If you don't know her go see her in person. Lennon puts all into her performances and always makes time for fans. A couple songs here were remixed but over all her best yet. Lennon Rocks!
awesome!!!!.......2006-11-30
i am one of lennon's biggest fans, i can honestly say that she is my favorite artist! i own all of her cds, and this new release along with 5:30 saturday morning are the best. i have to say that the version of "my beautiful" off the 5:30 saturday morning album is the best version of the song.
'nobody knows' is a great song. as the rest of the songs on the album. i recommend this album to anybody! great piece of work from lennon...
A great album but..........2006-11-13
I have to agree with previous reviewers, while "My Beautiful" is an amazing song, I kinda wish Lennon would stop remaking it. I have literally 4 versions of it now. The one on this cd renamed "Where Do I fit In?", a live accoustic I found on the internet (really pretty if you can find it), a duet with Travis Meeks off of her import "I Am", and the original on "5:30 am". I think I'm in the minority though; I prefer the "I Am" version, the addition of a male counterpart does add to it in my opinion and the guitar sounds better. Also, there is a different version of "No One Knows" on "I Am" that in my opinion, is much better. I love that song and I believe the reworked version on this album is missing something.
All that aside, I think it is a great album and I hope Lennon has more to come. If only she'd do a show near me so I could see her live.
Amazing follow up........2006-11-02
I was a little worried about buying this CD because it has been a while since I have heard anything new from Lennon. I didn`t know what I was going to expect, but when I put this CD in the player, I was blown away. I drove around the town just listening to this CD. In all honestly, I haven`t listened to anything else since I bought this CD. I loved 5:30 Saturday Morning, and I think that Lennon has progressed a lot since that CD. I can`t pick just one song as my favorite. This CD is amazing from start to finish. If people are new to Lennon, this would be a great CD to start with.
Welcome back, Ms. Murphy.......2006-10-25
I was a fan of her first cd and I also liked "Commerical Suicide" but I kinda lost track of her until last week when I was at a cd store and I happened to see a new cd by her. I was interested in hearing her new songs so I picked it up and I must say that I enjoyed it. The years since 5:30 came out when she toured on her own as well as opened for the likes of Alice Cooper and Heart have paid off. Her vocals seem stronger than on 5:30. You can feel the emotion and you know she means everything she sings and she's able to covey that feeling with her voice without overdoing it like some other piano playing female fronting a hard rock band(not naming names). I'm glad to see Lennon still around and kicking it. And I'll try not to lose track again.

Customer Reviews:
Very very good.......2003-09-27
Very good album, my favorite is track 5-very upbeat. In whole the rest of the album is very good, too, but I think some of her stuff with Billy Childish might be better-it seemed very hynotic, but still check out her new album!!!!
60's Soul With Punk Attitude.......2003-08-27
I have heard Holly Golightly tunes before and rather enjoyed them. The new album is a remarkable throwback to 60's soul. While Ms. Golightly's vocals are thin, there is an underlying edge to them...almost as if a smokey aura of experience are behind her words. Musically, the album's first half has an enjoyable groove. Be assured that you will be moving and shaking during the first half. By album's end, we find the music more subdued but not without intensity.
I played this album at a party and everyone raved about the album's sound. Simply described by a friend: Did Dusty Springfield and Phil Spector have a love child? HA!
If you are tired of the rubbish that's infecting our airways and our charts, by all means pick this album up! If you disagree, I will personally apologize for your wasted time! Rarely, I find myself excited enough by an album to tell everyone. In 2003, this is that album!!

Dirt track folky blues with a twist of Golightly. Dave, with his famous hair from Hill, Texas is brilliant on this release. Dave is Holly's stand-up bass player for tours in America. Holly is the best songstress since ever. Love em, buy it now ! ! ! See them live for a different sound. That is all.

Holly goes soft.......2005-02-26
This album is nothing like the vintage Holly Golightly blues rock albums. It closer to nina simone and at times old time country music. If you are new to her music and looking to try something out, I recommend 'Down Ginas at 3' or 'Painted On'. That said, I love this album: it's different and Holly has a incredible and unique voice.

Good introduction for first time Holly listeners.......2005-11-16
I wouldn't normally review a greatest hits album, because naturally they are good. If you haven't heard Holly Golightly before then this compilation of hits would be a good introduction. She is quite unique in her genre of music. Very few Women have been successful when it comes to writing and recording hard electric blues. But Holly's light gravely voice suits the style wonderfully.
With ten albums under her belt she has a huge selection of songs to pick from, spanning ten years of hard work. The tracks here show how her sound has evolved, from bluesy garage rock through to alt-country blues, with the odd folk song in between. They run together on this disc beautifully and before long you will be singing along.
This is great as an introduction, but I would recommend buying one of her studio albums.

Best New (to me) in Many Years.......2005-10-19
I will be buying more Holly Golightly after listening to this. It has been a long time since I've bothered to write a review on amazon.com, but this is a special album, deserving comment. Many people seem to place Ms. Golightly in the garage scene, but I find she transcends that label, and in a good way. I'm attracted to Stripes, Black Keys, Airplane Man, Dirt Bombs, Detroit Cobras, etc. for the same reasons everyone else seems to be, but Holly Golightly is better than them in that she maintains their raw, lightly produced integrity while developing very subtle multi-layered compostions the instrumentation of the others simply doesn't allow. Golighty's a great blend of the straight on and the aesthetic, perhaps mannered, and she puts her individual, sometimes deadpanned, stamp on the influences she so respectfully shares with us, going back to R&B, old pyschedelic cords, delta blues slide guitar, punk and girl stuff. You should buy Holly Golightly. I'll be getting more.
Grungy retro guitar rock ROCKS!.......2004-04-07
A lot of Americans probably first heard Holly Golightly as a guest singer on the White Stripes' "Elephant" album. White Stripes fans would be advised to check out Golightly's work---it's amazing! Her voice is quirky and sexy and the backing music is minimal and edgy garage rock, sometimes bluesy and sometimes tinged with a retro surf-punk attitude.

Album Description
Debut album from Fabienne Delsol who hails from the town of Limoges in France, but based in London, and is better known as the lead singer of legendary garage band the Bristols. 13 tracks, half originals half covers all sounding like they were actually recorded by Joe Meek in Holloway in the early 60s. Damaged Goods. 2004.
Customer Reviews:
Repeated Listening Pleasure.......2006-06-28
This CD lacks the punch of some of Fabienne's Bristols releases but it has an elegance and quality that stands up to repeated listenings. The Joe Meek inspired studio sound is a pleasure to hear and the playing is tatefully done throughout. The songs are mostly sixties covers but there are also some Kaiser George originals which fit right into the mix.
The disc won't bowl you over but if you are like me you'll find yourself playing it again and again.
A great little retro pop album.......2005-08-18
It's a shame that Amazon misspelt Fabienne's surname (it should be Delsol, but it's currently there as Delso) making it harder for people to find this album. I bought this purely on the weight of the first track, "I'm Gonna Haunt You" - a fantastic, cute, nasty little ditty and quite reminiscent of Nancy Sinatra - it would be perfectly at home in a Quentin Tarantino movie. In fact, the whole album has that wonderful, neo-60s feel to it, although none of the other tracks quite match the sound and cool of the first one. Overall though, it's a great update on the classic yé-yé sound from 1960s France.
Most of the songs are in English, although 'Laisse Tomber Les Filles' is sung in her native French, and it sounds great even if you don't understand the lyrics. Other notable tracks on the album include "When my Mind is not Live", "Chills and Fever" and the title track, "No Time for Sorrows".
Fabienne Delsol has a great voice, which is accentuated by her delightful French accent. I'm looking forward to seeing what she comes up with next.

Another awesome rock record from Ms. Golightly.......2007-03-06
This is an album that's been a long time coming, and which will make Holly's fans old and new happy as clams... At last, a compilation of her best 7"-only releases from over the years, gathered up from several uber-cool indie labels. This includes alternate versions of several songs that have appeared on LP, as well as some real obscuro tracks. It's a little light on the cover tunes, but since Holly writes such great original material, we'll forgive them this omission... Get it while you can: this is one of her best records to date! (Originally reviewed: January, 2002)
Don't hold your breath..........2005-12-29
Hey, I love Holly, so I ordered this disc in early September as a birthday gift to myself. Over the next three months, Amazon pushed back the shipping date three times. Finally right before Christmas they cancelled the order due to lack of availability.
Maybe you should look elsewhere if you're interested in owning this.
Killer compilation from the garage rock queen.......2002-04-16
The first record I heard from Holly Golightly was her collaboration with Dan Melchior, 'Desperate Little Town'. That album is excellent, so after spinning that constantly for a few days I went to a CD store where I found this compilation, ultra-cheap and a few weeks before its official release. Enough on the autobiographical [junk], on to the music. This is some great bluesy rock here, though that description sorta doesn't do respect to Holly's incredible versatility. There are some stripped down, countryish tunes here, seedy guitar rockers, acidic punky soul tunes, etc. My favorites out of the 24 tunes here (and it's hard to choose) would be 'Come the Day', 'The Ride', 'Card Table', 'Stain', and her killer cover of Ike Turner's 'Your Love Is Mine'. But I'm just list-making here, you have to hear this for yourself. And if you already have her other albums, much of the stuff here was previously found only on B-sides. Grab this.

Goddess, we like it!.......2006-09-29
The word to encapsulate the brilliance of this goddess has not yet been invented, so let's settle for genius. Truly, Holly is none other. The most prolific lady in a genre of music that draws on many influences but is ultimately unique to her, Holly has so many CDs by now that it is hard to know where to begin in recommending them. They're all magic! Just when you think you've heard the best one yet, you hear one that's even better. This has got to be up there. Holly trips the light fantatic on I hear you, Nothing you can say (which I have decided is my favourite Holly tune and in my top ten of tunes overall). Highly recommended, on bended knees to the queen, along with just about everything else that Holly has every produced.
...but I sure do!!.......2001-04-12
An outstanding followup to Holly's amazing "Serial Girfriend" album... This follows in pretty much the same style -- a slinky mix of Ike Turner-style R&B and gnarly garage punk. The usual suspects from the Billy Childish/Headcoats scene back her up. It's another delightfully wicked, skillfully produced album. Ace bunny killer.
Very super duper talented........2000-08-21
Why is Holly the best? 1. Because she can sing the blues baby. 2. Because she is so effin cute. 3.She can write the superior lyric.
Less poppy and more bluesy than the last albums, which is good. The duet is the best song and enjoy the harmonica.
