From the Artist
"Maybe its the combination of old and new", says The Universal Artist about the strong visual impact of his music. "Im always trying to mix every musical influence together, even if it doesnt seem to work at first. But all of a sudden everything falls into place and creates something beautiful."
About the Artist
The project "The Universal Artist" is an unusual approach to music. Blending old and new, hi-tech and lo-tech, harmony and dissonance, exotic languages and sine waves, The Universal Artists songs and textures evoke a highly visual imagination devoid of time and space. Cassette tapes played back with dictaphones, cylinder recordings from 1890 and computer generated textures make the music that is bending the spectrum of electronica. The Universal Artist has released his third album "21... read more
Album Description
21 Days is the new album from The Universal Artist. It delivers everything from Akira-Kurosawa-ian flute melodies (song Meaning Machine) to Air-like pop (21 Days) to lo-fi beats a la Beck (No-age Cover Designer). Some strange B-sides with featured vocals and spoken word by Yuko Takabatake and Janubia make the album a silly and intelligent pop gem. On the way to an underground hit in Japan, nothing is more interesting than what you hear in here.

The platinum-selling Richard Marx was a radio staple in the late '80s and early '90s; he's continued to keep his hand in as a songwriter for the likes of 'N Sync ("This I Promise You"). Days in Avalon, his first album since 1997, isn't likely to change anyone's mind about Marx. But anyone who has enjoyed him in the past will appreciate this disc, whose only real surprise is the closing duet with Alison Krauss, "Straight from My Heart." Elsewhere, Marx indulges his passion for melodramatic storytelling (remember "Hazard"?) on "Boy Next Door," the tale of a Midwestern teenager who goes on a shooting spree. --Rickey Wright
Customer Reviews:
couple of gems but mainly dull ballads.......2005-09-11
Richard Marx is generally known for a few hit singles- and it is rarely true, but in his case, is DEFINITELY true- stick to the greatest hits.
I have listened to the greatest hits of Richard Marx and this contains an awesome collection.
Then I tried to some of his albums. Without exception, they are all really dull and none of the songs stand out. On this collection, there a couple of stand out songs. 'One more time', is an exceptional ballad. Probably one of the most heart wrenching ballads of all time, with a phenomenal arrangement and lovely classical guitar. One of the best things Marx has ever written.
Other highlights are 'waiting on your love' with a really memorable chorus that is melodic and memorable. 'Days in avalon' the title track is also a memorable ballad.
'Staright from my heart' is also a beautiful heart felt ballad, with a touch of country to it. Nice pedal guitar, mixed with acoustic guitar and another pretty melody.
'Shine' is also OK, but can't actually remember the tune now, as I write this.
The rest is utterly disposable, ranging from average stuff, like 'someone special' to utter rubbish, like 'too early to be over', which is a poor rock song, filled with cleches.
I also really dislike the melody in 'boy next door' and can't stand the female singer in 'the edge of forever'. Tries to be a romantic duet and has some nice instrumental backing, but the vocal melodies just spoil it.
Make an EP out of five songs on this album. Ditch the rest. Same story for all of Marx's CDs.
Richard Marx: Days In Avalon (2000).......2005-02-25
In 2000, Richard Marx, after another three year break, came back to release his seventh album entitled, DAYS IN AVALON. This album is a lot different from his first five albums, and greatest hits album. Being that this is the 21s century and that Richard is getting a bit older and wiser, he matures the sound of his music, which is more than okay by me. This album is very enjoyable in every way.
DAYS IN AVALON
The first single from the album. This song, which is the album's title track, the first album to have a title track, is sounds very country to me, but very soothing and relaxing. When I read the title of the song, I was expecting an up-tempo dance tune, but my expectations have proven me wrong once again, and this time I like being wrong because this song is really enjoyable.
SHINE
The music to this song sounds very uplifting and spiritual, a song that Madonna would have done back in 1998, when she released her 11th album, Ray Of Light. That is why I have enjoyed this song since the first time I heard it. I did not only enjoy it because it sounds like a Madonna song from her Ray Of Light era, I also enjoyed it because it was just a ballad in general. You know how much enjoy hearing ballads.
SOMEONE SPECIAL
Sounds like this whole album might be full of ballads. Now, Richard's voice never needed any improvement, and on this track, his voice still does not need any improvement, since his voice is incredible. This song is not that great. Don't get me wrong, this song is okay, but it wasn't what I hoped it would be.
ALMOST EVERYTHING
Since the first three songs on this album were ballads, Richard decided to include an up-tempo tune on the album, which starts with this song. This song is real catchy, but edgy at the same time. A song anyone, including me, can enjoy.
EDGE OF FOREVER (Duet with Chelly Wright)
Another ballad is included here, but this time, Richard did not sing alone. He sang with Chelly Wright. I have never heard of Chelly Wright until I had heard this song. This song is very nicely done, along with both the beautiful voices of Richard and Chelly.
THE POWER OF YOU AND ME
Back to the up-tempo songs, that sound a little like a country song, but only enough to make me enjoy it. Richard has a way throwing in different types of music into his own, which is what I usually like. If you are a country artist, who throws a bit of Pop or Rock into your music, then you have some good songs. Richard Marx is a Pop/Rock artist, who, at times, throws a little country sound into his songs, just like this one, and it makes it sound great. Perfect, in fact.
ONE MORE TIME
Hmm, back to ballads. As much as I love ballads, I kind of wish that there were more up-tempo songs included on the album. But, this song is very haunting and very beautiful, and I must have listened to it a thousand times. A very beautiful song. Richard definitely has a lot of soul.
WAITING ON YOUR LOVE
Not really a ballad, but very close to it. This is a very enjoyable song. I really enjoy hearing the music and the melodies. As usual, Richard's voice is pleasing...as always.
MORE THAN A MYSTERY
Finally! An up-tempo song. I'm all ballads-ed out. The harmonies and sound of Richard's excellent voice are amazing. The music is absolutely perfect. I do not think there is one thing about this song that I would not change. Even the title is great.
BOY NEXT DOOR
Another country-like ballad, but along the same lines as his 1991 hit, Hazard (The River), my favorite Richard Marx hit. This is another haunting sound, with a great sound, hook, and harmony vocals. A song no fan should ever dare skip.
TOO EARLY TO BE OVER
You know, I feel the same way when I'm having a good time. This song is just a way of saying that, "Time flies when you're having fun". This is one of the few up-tempo songs featured on this album and I love it. If you listen to this song, you'll love it too.
STRAIGHT FROM MY HEART (Duet with Alison Krauss)
The second & final single from the album. Back the basic ballads again, but this is the second song on this album where Richard did not sing alone. Joining him this time is Alison Krauss, another artist, whom I had never heard of, but an artist who has a real pleasing voice to fit next to Richard's pleasing voice. When you have these two pleasing voices together, they make up this pleasing ballad, which I enjoy heavily.
This album may not be his greatest work, but the album is certainly great enough for me to enjoy it to the furthest extent. And I tell you all now to buy this album before you lose your one and only chance. So get up off your a** and buy this amazing album.
Another Marx Album - Par Excellence.......2004-12-28
About 2 months ago I purchased Richard's latest, My Own Best Enemy. That enthralled me so much that I just had to have more from Richard. And this work of art is just as good as MOBE. Richard's work has matured so much from the brash 23-year old who conquered the pop music scene in the late 80s. The title song is a beautiful ballad which steals your heart away. Someone Special was.....well, special. Almost Everything is another power ballad (and what a power ballad, with the sweetness of his voice underlaid with grit and gravel).
Edge of Forever is an unforgettable duet with Chely Wright; Boy Next Door is a spine chilling tale of...on second thought, I think I will let you find out for yourself. His whispered warning at the end of the tale "look around" is a fitting finish for this story-song.One More Time is another one that will capture your heart and is probably one of his best ballads ever, joining the exclusive company of Endless Summer Nights, Right Here Waiting, Hold Onto the Nights, and Until I Find You Again. Anyone who has ever heard a Richard Marx song is guaranteed to like "Avalon"
Richard's Still Got It!.......2003-12-04
I have to admit, I hadn't been listening to Richard Marx for awhile, until a friend of mine reintroduced me to his incredible sound by playing his music over and over when I was around. I had almost forgot how amazing a singer/songwriter this guy was! After I got reacquainted I had to get Days In Avalon. This album is just as wonderful, if not more so, than all of his earlier stuff. The songs range from the slow love ballads like "One More Time" to the more upbeat, positive songs like "Too Early to Be Over." The music is good, but the lyrics are even better. I have listened to it over and over since I got it and it just keeps getting better every time. My favorite songs are "Days In Avalon," "Almost Everything," "Someone Special," "Power of You and Me," "The Boy Next Door" (I always was a "Hazard" fan), "Too Early to Be Over," and "Straight from My Heart" (very country!) In conclusion, I recommend this album for anyone looking for good music written by a truly underrated and talented man.
Always brilliant, beautiful music..........2003-03-09
I'm a college student, and Richard Marx is still my favorite singer. His voice is very emotional and pleasing. Same to be said about his lyrics. I find him an exceptional song writer. As for this Album, he does not disappoint or get old. Let's go through the tracks...
Days In Avalon*****- this is a great song and choice for the title track. It has a subtle, but uplifting tone to it. "You were the one thing worth livin' for", how great is that to hear flowing out of his lips?
Shine****- This is a slower track on the album. Not a favorite, but it still works.
Someone Special*****- This is a good song to listen to if you want to stop feeling bad for yourself and start feeling for the character Richard is singing for. It has a moderate tone to it.
Almost Everything*****- I enjoy listening to this song. It is one of the most powerful songs on "Days." He describes gaining everything the world offers, except for his lost love, and he states it by saying, I'd have almost everything. Good message.
Edge of Forever*****- Slow, love song sang with Chely Wright. If you enjoy his duets, i.e. "At the Beginning"- Anastasia, then you'll hold tight to this track.
Power of You and Me*****- Most upbeat song, very fun to sing along with. If you're in a relationship, this song will make you two feel strong enough to beat anything the world throws your way.
One More Time*****- Classic Richard love song. Follows suit of "Riht Here Waiting." That should say it all.
Waiting on Your Love*****- My most listened to track. It has R&B influence, and its own original tone that sets it apart from the Album. It creates a flow that you have to move to.
More Than A Mystery*****- Another good, upbeat chorus. He's telling his lover, straight up that he wants to be their one and only.
Boy Next Door*****- Another fun mystery song, such as "Hazard." I enjoy this track more, has a bit of Sci-Fi sound to it.
To Early to Be Over*****- Can be easily compared to "Power of You and Me." The difference, is that he's singing of a another story.
Straighr From My Heart****- You can feel the country influence as soon as the track starts playing. It has an acoustic feel to it.

Not too hot to handle and Smooth Going Down.......2004-09-25
This album is definately "off the hook"... I love it.. the arrangements are definately tight... My friend reccommended this album... at first hesitant.. I have been convinced and hope to hear more...
Wayman shows us his spirit.......2004-09-04
I was fortunate enough to find this album at a huge Virgin record store, so being a fan of Wayman, i had to pick it up. Let me tell you now, if you are looking for more smooth jazz from Way, you will find something more. This whole album is whole-hearted gospel where you will find Wayman singing more than you will notice his guitar in the background (and I think he uses an acoustic for most of the songs).
It's reassuring to know that Wayman has the Lord in him and can make such nice music since his basketball days are over. The guests on "21 Days" really add some heart to the mix. Whether it's Karnell Murrell's vocals on the title track and "Glory Glory," Danielle Tisdale on "Prayer" and "Look At Me Now," Pastor Weldon Tisdale's powerful preaching on "We Worship" and "Secret Place," Cassandra Robertson on "Today," or Wayman's suprising vocals on almost every song but exclusively on "It's Alright" and "Jesus Is The Answer," this album is quite a joy. It should definitely pick up your spirits no matter what mood you're in.
"21 Days" starts off strong with the ballads "Today" and "We Worship." My two favorite tracks are "It's Alright" (I couldn't believe this song was all Wayman!) and "Look At Me Now"- both beautiful songs. Other standouts are "Secret Place" and "Jesus Is The Answer" (which is great because of the young children's choir and Wayman's vocals). I couldn't believe how steady Wayman's singing voice is throughout the album, catch him doing the chorus to almost every song and more. Plus, his voice is powerful while reciting "Psalm 91."
This may not appeal to all smooth jazz fans, but gospel listeners and Tisdale faithful will enjoy "21 Days" very much. Why did I give it 4 stars? It's too short, which ain't always a bad thing, but the weaker moments stand out though (like the not-so-essential "Look At Me Now Reprise"). Believe me, I was left wanting more. So do yourself a favor and buy this album and Wayman's return-to-his-craft recent release "Hang Time" and let your spirits and imagination take flight.
Tisdale outdid himself?.......2004-09-02
This CD is well worth the investment. I went out on a limb but knowing his work - I realized that it has to be as good or better than his past work. I LOVE IT!!!!! This is a God inspired project built on love and praise songs to God.
Great CD!!!!!.......2004-01-13
This is some great gospel jazz work by Wayman. God has really given him a gift in smooth jazz music. My favorite track is "Look At Me Now"!!! It is the jam for the year!!!!!!!!!! Wayman make more tracks like this, man!!! We want more gospel jazz by you, man!!!! The entire cd is wonderful though, and I really like the way he is working with the kids on the last track for they are our next generation and need true godly leadership and role models in their life right now. I am a true believer and witness that If any man/woman be in Christ, he/she is a new creature, old things are past away and all things become new when you give your life to Jesus. If you haven't tried Jesus, try him wholeheartedly. It's never too late to confess Jesus as your Savior. One thing you will never know is when you may take your last breath so why not try him now; give your life to Jesus and experience NEW LIFE?
OUTSTANDING.......2003-12-15
Wayman, you out did yourself!! This Cd is wonderful and uplifting. It is truley your greatest work yet!!

Customer Reviews:
Burgmuller's sonata is a gem of thousand carats.......2004-05-06
What talented musician was Norbert Burgmuller. Since the first time I listened this sonata in vinyl in 1976, I still wonder this musician is so underknown.
This sonata reminds us to the best pages of Robert Schumann. Remember this work belongs to Op. 8 . So consider Burgmuller was developing his huge potential musicianship.
His early death was a great loss for the musical world. This composer ownwd the greatness sense, deep musicality and above all a powerful conviction. Far from being a musician for the galleries he would have been able to clim higher peaks in the story.
The performing given by Adrian Ruiz is honest, austere and felt heart.
Buy this CD , because this work deserves being more known for all who loves the great music.
Slouching towards Volkmann.......2002-03-28
My friends! The world has lost sight of beauty. The hardened, the cynical, the feined must no longer be allowed to dictate what is and is not true art. I give you, for example, the case of these heart searing piano works by Burgmuller, Volkmann, and Kirchner (an aside: I once went to school with a girl whose last name was Kirchner--she was, intriguingly enough as morose and disaffected as the Spiritual Fascists who reject music such as that on this disc). We must bear the opression and affectation of the ultra serious no longer. Rise up my brothers and sisters! Celebrate a joyous, a lovely music...Throw off the bonds of Criticism as Cynicism...Get This Disc.
OVER THE TOP ROMANTICISM--- BUT SUCH FUN! (Part 2).......2001-08-31
Again, I simply cannot repress a smile when listening to these so elementally and stereo-typically "romantic" piano sonatas of Burgmuller (1810-1836) and Volkmann (1815-1883), along with the delightfully inventive piano pieces of Kirchner (1823-1905). I'm sorry, but one could almost say they're quaint in their sheer naivete and abandon; and, frankly, I find them all the more ingratiating for these reasons.
Burgmuller's Sonata in F Minor, Op. 8, begins with an Allegro molto (9:12) of obvious Beethovenian bluster (e.g. especially with so many adaptations of the "modernisms" we hear in the late piano sonatas). Built on an exciting repeated motif, notes and chords amass, ebb and flow, and, meanwhile, interweave with the most Schubertian of melodies. The muse of Chopin, however, hovers above the lyrical Romanze (7:24), whose quirky trio section reminds us, again, that Burgmuller's impetus never strays far from Beethoven. In the Allegro molto e con fuoco finale (11:19), Burgmuller surprises us, shortly in, with a multitude of ear-catching "tricks": exciting runs, unexpected lyricism, thrilling punctuated chords--- all built and rebuilt on the same germinal motif. But it works. And it's all quite a kick.
With the Volkmann Sonata in C Minor, Op. 12, there tends to be a bit more "gravitas" and overall structural complexity. His penchant for melody, however, is never occluded; the gorgeous little tune that appears and reappears throughout the opening Moderato cantabile (6:32) is adequate proof of this. The Prestissimo (2:32) is a scurrying "molto perpetuo," quite reminiscent of Mendelssohn, and a brilliant segue into the Andante pesante/Allegro molto finale (5:02). Fascinating structure, this: your basic "slow movement" concluding the sonata--- and a beauty it is!--- capped by a sudden, rousing coda.
However, Volkmann's Fantasy in C, Op. 25a (5:47), shows a composer easily on par with Liszt or Brahms in overall depth, dimension and technical expertise. This is a no holds barred showpiece, sparse on lyricism, but exceptionally exciting in execution.
In Kirchner we find a dreamer who excelled in shorter piano works, not unlike Schumann's Bunte Blatter or Mendelssohn's Songs Without Words. The selection here is culled from a variety of the composer's output, namely: the Op. 21 (Aquarellen), Op. 30 (Studies and Pieces), Op. 71 (Little Studies) and the Op. 73 (Romantic Poems). Most memorable are the Op. 21, No. 3 (fr. Aquarellen), Op. 73, No. 2 ("Spring Greeting"), Op. 73, No. 4 ("Days Gone By") and the absolutely beautiful Op. 73, No. 2 ("Nocturne").
Adrian Ruiz, whose excellent Genesis performance of the complete Goetz Piano Music has given me untold pleasure for twenty-five years (and is also available through Amazon), is, again, the perfect artist to renew these neglected works afresh. His affection, intuitive sense of wit, charm and breadth make this CD a treat to hear... and, yes, fun, as well. The transferred sound from the 1973 LPs is full, rich and immediate. Enjoy!

As One of the Most Legendary Champions of Bach Karl Richter's Many (And in Some Instances Multiple) Recordings of the Composers Cantata's Arguably is his Greatest Achievement. Richter Enlisted Many of the Finest Vocalists in their Prime During the 1950's Through the Early 70's for These Recordings Elevating the Neglected Form at the Time to the Level of Grand Opera. His Conducting, Especially for his Day as Well Remains Remarkably Animated and Fluent Yet Always Respectful of Bach's Underlying Powerful Architectural Components. These Recordings Set the Standard and for Many Today Remain the Benchmark Performances by which all New Ones Continue to Be Judged.
Customer Reviews:
Bach in the Bach Tradition.......2006-12-16
I believe I owe it to the period performance movement for making me feel like I am committing a sin when I don't listen to Gardiner's or Hogwood's Bach (or Handel, or any Baroque composer for that matter). If, say, I put in Shaw's recording of the B minor mass, or most certainly Klemperer's recording of the St. Mathew passion, I feel that I should somehow be ashamed for what I am doing. There may be some type of Freudian truth buried deep within my being ashamed; however, there has always been an exception to my modern instrument guilts. This is, of course, the Bach recordings of Karl Richter; and more specifically, Richter's immortal survey of the sacred cantatas (well, 75 of them anyway). I received this set as a gift when I graduated from college, and I have been constantly listening since. The music of Bach has meant more to me than any other composer, and the Richter recordings show Bach's true genius at full speed ahead.
Don't get me wrong, I love Gardiner's recordings of the B-minor mass and the St. Matthew Passion; and I do believe that period performance practice reveals a totally new dimension of Bach which can sometimes be overlooked (or, "glossed-over" as the case may be with Klepmerer and others of the like). However, any academic arguments favoring Gardiner over Richter are simply meaningless to me. As Glenn Gould said, its not the type of instruments used that count, but rather, a deep respect for the innate structures of the music; this is what's important, and to accomplish this he believed that we must get rid of the incorrect and outdated notion that by "glossing over" these structures, it somehow improves upon them. I think Gould is absolutely correct in saying its respect for the musical structures that counts most; this is the only duty incumbent upon interpreters of Baroque music (and especially Bach). With this in mind, how can Richter not be the supreme interpreter? Richter gives us Bach in the Bach tradition, and I believe that this is in no small part due to his deep understanding of the same Lutheranism which was in the mind of Bach when he wrote this glorious music. To quote yet another Bach authority, Albert Schweitzer once said "Only he who sinks himself into Bach's emotional world, who lives and thinks with him, [...] can rightly bring Bach's music to the listener". I can think of no one who fits the description quite like Karl Richter.
Well, all arguments aside, the music on these 26 [!] discs are absolutely unsurpassed. I was a bit worried before I received this set, as I knew that in Richter's latter years, he did seem to take various liberties with the scores (more specifically, a slowing of the tempi to the point that it takes us out of the Bach tradition). However, I can safely say that these rumored liberties are nowhere to be found in this set, just pure Bach. I wont dare try to single out notable performances of this massive set (I would be here all night, and I am sure you are becoming tired of reading this anyway). However, one cantata specifically stood out for me during my first few hours with the set (and has since stuck with me); this being BWV 132 (4th Sunday in Advent cantata). This specific cantata, can speak for the entire set in terms of the soloist supremacy above all other Bach cantata recordings (how can you go wrong with Edith Mathis, Anna Reynolds, Peter Schreier, and Theo Adam - with Ursula Buckel and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau elsewhere on the set).
So, finally, this set has exactly what I want in a survey of the cantatas - that is, the genius of J.S. Bach is in the driver's seat, not the conductors. While Gardiner has his moments (and when he does, they are fantastic), and Klemperer did at least get everyone talking about Bach again, I believe Richter's interpretations are the standard by which this music should be played and heard. This set is a landmark in the history of Bach recordings, and although quite expensive, it really should be in the collections of all lovers of music.
- By the way, the set comes in a large slipcover (as shown above by Amazon), with the five original fold-open cases inside; each made of an extremely sturdy, glossy-coated cardboard (as shown above by me [hopefully]). Each disc is in a paper sleeve.
A Time Capsule of Sheer Delight.......2006-12-15
I treasured these recordings as a music student in high school and college in the '70's. Although newer, 'historically correct' recordings were emerging, Richter's musicality, if one will, still attracted me to these Archive recordings. This set is a bargin considering all the music there is to digest. DG's remastering is excellent-the warm analog sound does not suffer what can sometimes be a strident digitized reincarnation. DG's engineers and hardware were always on the cutting edge and these recordings speak to that fact. Say what one will about the oddities of interpertation, there is music in evey bar. Before I began listening, I though that I should prepare myself to forgive Richer for his position in history and look the other way when so called historically inaccurate idioms presented themselves. Yes, they are there, but, the younger listener will be quite astonished to find amazing vitality and sweep of phrase and articulation. Richter's tempi are often suprisingly brisk. The roster of soloists speaks for itself. If you are a musician interested in the genesis of Bach interpertation, this set is a must-have. It is often said that many Bach conductors after Richter took up where he left off. This group of recordings is a testament to his influence. Bravo DG !

Russian-born Irina Mishura has been unaccountably neglected in the onslaught of mezzo-sopranos, even though her voice has more size and dimension than her sometimes dour-sounding countryman, Olga Borodina. This program of songs includes Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, and Shostakovich's Six Poems of Marina Tsvetayeva, which Mishura encompasses with deep feeling and authority. Her accompanist doesn't have the greatest piano in the world but one can't complain too loudly about one of the few recordings by this treasurable singer. --David Patrick Stearns

Perhaps I should start by admitting a bias: Many years ago, lying on Boston's grassy Esplanade by the Charles River on warm summer nights, I learned what a symphony orchestra should sound like, with Arthur Fiedler conducting the Boston Pops Orchestra. Those concerts were free; these seven compact discs are not--not quite. But for any lover of light classical music, they are certainly one of the best buys available. The orchestra (essentially the Boston Symphony) is one of the world's greatest; the music, from Smoke Gets in Your Eyes to the Goyescas Intermezzo and Ride of the Valkyries is instantly enjoyable and permanently valuable; the conductor is at the same time genial and exacting, convinced that any music you play, no matter how frivolous, deserves the best you can give it. --Joe McLellan
