Seeing Things
Editorial Reviews
About the Artist
A group of friends from New Jersey who grew up on new wave, punk, and power pop and never got past it. No sampled loops, no sampled hits from the past, just good rock and roll songwriting. Most of the band members would undoubtedly be considered good-looking with fame. Band Members: Jim Wood: lead vocabulary, mastermind, inspiration.
John Kayne: guitar god.
Dan Snyder: keyboards, big crooked nose, cross-dressing.
Franz: bass, cigarettes.
Gorilla: drums, bad posture.

The best from The Best Singer and Tenor of all time........2007-04-24
This is a beautiful collection of songs. Once again it exhibits the depth and breath of Mario Lanza's vocal abilities. It is wonderful to hear him sing such lovely melodies. It is also splendid to read Derek Mannering's explanation of how Lanza interpreted each song with his heart and soul. For anyone who is a fan of Mario's, this collection is worth the price.
Gorgeous.......2001-11-25
Most of these songs are from the popular radio show he did in the 50's, when his voice was at it's best. I own numerous Lanza cds, and I can never get enough of his glorious voice and these beautiful songs. A lot of them can be found on other albums, it's true, but the first song is a previously unreleased gem, which was a big selling point with me. How could I pass this up? Also a lot of the songs are different versions from others I have, so this album was definately a must have, for me. I think that anyone who is a true Lanza fan, will love this cd.
Another great CD by the greatest singer of all time!!!.......2001-07-17
Derek Mannering has done it again in releasing yet another first class CD collection by the "Voice of the Century", Mario Lanza. Most of the items on this album have been previously released either on vinyl, CD, or both, but this collection is worth having nonetheless. The one item here never before released is the beautifully sung "All the Things You Are" and did Lanza ever serve this one up in first class fashion. The singing here is extremely fresh and vibrant. A recording that I don't believe has been on CD before is the "You Are Love", from Showboat, presented here (different from the performance on the definitive "Don't Forget Me" C). Lanza shows us here a truly passionate and ardent Gaylord Revenal. No other singer sang this song as well. "On the Street Where You Live" is given a very virile and beautiful rendition by Lanza. I don't know where or when I have ever heard the song "Where or When" sung this well. The rest of the selections on this offering are terrific as well, but can be found on other collections. This collection is worth owning, if for no other reason than for the four selections previously mentioned. The sound quality is excellent, giving the Mario Lanza voice the benefit of its full presence. Lanza definitely had a true flair for the popular song and Broadway ballad, as well as the ringing operatic aria, no doubt about it. If you're looking for a collection of classic standard and Broadway tunes performed with the mastery and excellence that only Mario Lanza could deliver, this CD is the one for you. Highly recommended!!!

Album Description
Revelation: 57
In some parallel universe, if Molly Ringwald had been cast in the Mad Max movies, Shades Apart would be the perfect soundtrack. Raised in a decade defined by John Hughes movies, bubblegum pop and escalating nuclear arms, the members of Shades Apart shared a passion for bands from the first wave of punk's invasion (energetic lads like the Jam, the Police, Generation X, and the Clash). Shades Apart's new record, Seeing Things, taps these sources to deliver a modern fusion of pop, punk and new wave. The single from their previous record, a uranium-fueled cover of the synth classic "Tainted Love", received loads of commercial radio airplay last year and eventually turned up on MTV. Not bad for three suburban-bred New Jersey-ites who started playing for something to do during summer vacations.
Shades Apart released their debut album in December 1988 on Wishingwell Records, a chiefly straight-edge hardcore label based in California. Two EPs followed: Dude Danger on Sunspot Records and Neon on Skene Records, which caught the ear of Descendents leader Bill Stevenson. Shades Apart jumped at the chance to work with their proto-punk icon, and Mr. Stevenson (along with bandmate Stephen Egerton) became the producer of their next LP. 1995's Save It was the product of that union. The band found a new home on Revelation Records and toured North America several times in the next year, converting legions of new fans and garnering critical praise along the way.
Seeing Things is the newest release, again brought to us by the production team of Stevenson/Egerton and again on Revelation Records. Whereas Save It was a 200 beat-per-minute articulation of pent-up anger and frustration, Seeing Things is not quite so fast and furious. The band maintains an overriding power and genuine emotion, but there's also a more melodic edge, reminiscent of writers like Joe Jackson or Squeeze. "We heard a difference between today's songwriting and the songs we grew up listening to," explains vocalist/guitarist Mark. "We wanted to write stuff of that caliber, but rev up the energy level".
Loaded with poppy, introspective hits for the proverbial Thinking Man (and Woman), Seeing Things is no lite fare. It's a record of personal searching and realization in the postmodern era, with a snappy beat you can dance to.
Customer Reviews:
Best Shades Apart album - and one of best in punk rock.......2003-05-04
Punk rock bands are abundant. But really great high energy, melodic punk bands are a bit more of an anomaly. Shades Apart are part of this rarer group, and "Seeing Things", their last release on independent label Relevation Records, may just be their finest (half) hour. While later albums "Eyewitness" and "Sonic Boom" find the band reaching for commercial viability and therefore lacking an 'edge', "Seeing Things" finds the band as its raw, melodic best. Each track is loud, fast, filled with excellent solos and catchy, hooky, and memorable choruses (think Elvis Costello backed by the Ramones). At 11 songs just over 35 minutes, Shades Apart's "Seeing Things" is a independent punk gem, best savored when played at high volumes on sunny days. Highly recommended to anyone who wishes to expand their punk pallet beyond Blink 182 and Sum 41.
Shades Apart Grows Up.......2000-02-29
At long last Shades Apart has come into its time. The previous releases of their work were immature, but this album really sets them "Apart" from the pack. The songs really hit you to the core. I just hope they continue to put out quality music they way they have...
Best Shades Apart Album!.......1999-03-27
These guys have matured into something really special with this album... I haven't much cared for their previous efforts, but this one has made me a fan. I've been into punk rock music for about 13 years and so I know what's good and what's not... this IS! Cathode, Fearless, and Behind the Wheel are the best tunes... I've been listening to it in my car for a month straight
Shades Apart really whips the llama's ***.......1999-01-25
i hate must punk, but shades apart really opened my eyes. This album is indredible, and the single "fearless" has become my new favorite song. Listen to this.

A good overview of Zorn's soundtrack compositions........2005-10-24
Over the past twenty years or so, John Zorn has built up an enormous library of composition for film, released on sixteen CDs (cleverly titled "Filmworks I", "Filmworks II", and so on...) on his Tzadik record label. For a neophyte, this can be a bit much to tackle, as such, this album, "Filmworks Anthology: 20 Years of Soundtrack Music" has been released to provide an overview of Zorn's soundtrack composition.
As an overview of Zorn's work, this succeeds well. It also appears that another goal was to represent every volume, as at least one piece is drawn from each (volumes VI and VIII get two cuts, I and XII get three, and III and VII get four). Just about everything in Zorn's diverse catalog of film soundtracks is covered-- movies, documentaries, pornography, cartoons and commercials (certainly none I've seen!) are all represented with a suitably diverse array of pieces, from gamelan to string trios to surf rock, Zorn pretty much covers a wide array of sounds and moods-- if nothing else, the diversity of these 28 tracks is a testament to his vast skills to compose in virtually any environment. I could make a few arguments about what cuts I would have picked, but by-and-large, the compilation is a rather good and thorough overview, and the cast of performers is immense, with virtually all key players in the downtown scene involved to some extent or another.
Another notable point about this release is the artwork-- packed in a digipack with a pair of photos of Zorn (one from '86, one from '05) and stills from the various pieces littered throughout the liner notes, it certainly looks great. And speaking of the liner notes, Zorn offers a superb essay on film soundtrack composition and appreciations by musicians Marc Ribot, Anthony Coleman, Jamie Saft and Cyro Baptista (all of whom appear to some extent or another on the music) are included.
I've got currently about half of the filmworks series and I found value in this overview. Several of the individual pieces hold together far better than this recording does, but it certainly does a great job providing an impression of Zorn's diverse film scoring career.
Curious about Zorn?.......2005-10-23
Considering myself a casual fan of John Zorn I have been at times either annoyingly put off or enthusiastically engaged with the diversity of his music. Admittedly, It can be daunting for a Zorn novice to find a suitable entry point in which to begin navigating through the extremities of his musical output. This new collection, which pulls material from the sixteen releases (thus far) of his FILMWORKS series, is everything the curious could want in a well-rounded introduction.
The selections chosen for this disc make for an exhilarating listening experience from start to finish as the focus jumps from one musical genre to the next, from cartoon scores to punk rock to jazz and surf music. Most selections early on clock in at under 4 minutes, with many others zipping by under just one. All these various styles meld together so effortlessly that it's impressive it all comes from a single creative mind.
The packaging is also deserving of mention, as the CD is housed in a fold-out digipack case with two booklets attached inside. In one of these booklets Zorn describes his methods and self-imposed rules in creating music for film (as well as for dealing with snoopy film directors). The other booklet features short essays by a few of Zorn's collaborators on what the creative sessions were like. There are also many photos from the films the music accompanies. (So far the only films I've seen with Zorn's scores are "Trembling Before G-D" and "Protocols of Zion".)
Favorite tracks: "Surfing Samba", "Arsenal Dance Mix", "Shanghai", "Main Title (Invitation to a Suicide)"
Final Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

If Earth & Sky, the compilation that was Laurie Lewis's Rounder debut, served to showcase her bluegrass roots, Seeing Things finds her breaking new musical ground. To be sure, there's still plenty of fiddle, mandolin, and high lonesome harmonies to be found here, and Lewis's respect for traditional music shines through. But these songs range all over the musical map, from the lilting Norteño swing of "I'll Take Back My Heart" to the sly, bass-driven shuffle of "Kiss Me Before I Die." Tom Russell's haunting "Manzanar" tells the story of Japanese internment during World War II, while Darol Anger grows a "forest of fiddles" (as the liner notes put it) around Lewis's lovely, clear soprano on the traditional "The Blackest Crow." Lewis has always been a hard artist to pigeonhole, gracefully moving between musical genres as different as bluegrass, jazz, gospel, and traditional folk. With Seeing Things, she establishes herself as a powerful, diverse singer/songwriter who deserves a much wider audience. --Mary Park
Customer Reviews:
California singer-songwriter with heart and style.......1998-06-12
I have been a fan of Laurie Lewis for 20 years, when I first heard her playing bass and singing with the Good Ol' Persons. She continues to amaze me with her versatility, her depth and her heart. Some of her songs are about love, life, and other universals, some about specifics in her life, about home and her own experiences. Esp. treats in this album are"Kiss Me Before I Die" written after a serous accident in '94 and 3 cuts with Kathy Kallick singing harmony. Laurie is a superb fiddle player - she also is backed by very talented people, including the incomparable Nina Gerber. The only reason this isn't a "5" for me is that I do have a favorite Lewis song - and that was already recorded years ago.

Displaying a rare discipline, Zorn eschews the jump-cut frenzy that typified The Big Gundown to showcase his cool mastery of conventional blues, rock, jazz, samba and most every pop flavor imaginable. --Jeff Bateman
Customer Reviews:
The beginning of Zorn's long soundtrack career........2006-02-06
"Film Works 1986 - 1990" is an anthology of early soundtrack work by John Zorn, collecting soundtracks for three short films and a rightly famous arrangement of "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" together. These days, Zorn has been pumping out a couple or three soundtrack pieces a year, but in the '80s, he was still the duck call guy, and it's intriguing to see his soundtrack work when it was very new to him.
The results are actually, given Zorn's place at the time, remarkably mainstream in their sound. Mind you, this isn't exactly Top 40, but it's a lot less frantic or dense as much of his early work. Expertly performed by some of the best musicians New York City had to offer-- Robert Quine, Bill Frisell, Scott Dresser, Bobby Previte, Wayne Horvitz, David Shea, the list goes on-- Zorn coaxes together a stew that accepts all his musical interests. At it's best, the performances are exciting and diverse (the hardcore punk of the "Main Title" from "White and Lazy", smokey, deep groove guitar jazz on "Seduction", the inexplicable "Theme" from "The Golden Boat" are all good examples), quite frankly at it's worst, the pieces on here are a bit too backgroundish, nothing is really bad. Morricone's infuence sits pretty heavy here, but it is uniquely Zorn.
I tend to find myself preferring Zorn's more recent soundtrack work, where he's shed the Morricone sound and really come into his own, but this is certainly an intriguing and powerful record. Recommended.
Damn good........2004-08-30
This was my first Zorn album. It is amazing. So many styles throughout the album. It really shows his strength as a musician and the deversity of his works. It is a lot easier to get into than some of his other works and I would recommend it to someone interested in checking him out. You get a little bit of everything, metal, jazz, country, classical and world music. Wonderful cd.
The best first buy.......2000-05-13
Never heard Zorn before, never heard his film music, and curious? This is the one best CD to buy. The music is great and it displays his strengths as a musician. He has a great ear for styles and can produce music in all of them, yet it's more than just mimicry, it's well made music with a strong core and a fine expression. He's an excellent alto player with great hard-bop chops and a nice, biting sound that comes right out of Jackie McLean. He also assembles great ensembles of musicians who have their own distinctive voices that benefit all the work. The music ranges from jazz to rock and beyond, never missing a beat, absolutey assured in everyway, constantly inventive and just great to listen to.

Product Description
They accept the idea that every heart is haunted, and there's nothing any one of us can do about it. They know that hope, happiness, melancholy and despair are equally poisonous when undiluted by truth. They see the stage as a secular altar to which they and an audience attempt to resurrect the dead (Charlie Patton, Hank Williams, Eric Dolphy, Pop Staples, The Carter Family, Memphis Minnie, etc.). It's inevitable that their ears are tuned to these electrical ghosts. Their hometown was the home base for Link Wray and Marvin Gaye; their streets the birthplace of Go-Go. A Spoils of NW show at The Black Cat, DC9 or the Mercury Lounge will make anyone who hears ghosts feel better about another night alone--or together--with them. Peter was in The High-Back Chairs, The Peter Hayes Condition and Pussy Galore. Bill was in Pteradactyl, and is the guitar player in his sons' band, Eyeball Skeleton. Joel was in the Revelers. Phil was in Tuscadero.
