A seminal year in pop history.......2005-04-13
In 1967, so many things happened in pop music, some ephemeral (like flower power) and some that had a profound effect on the music industry like the release of the Sergeant Pepper album by the Beatles. It is impossible to do more than provide a taste of 1967's music in just twenty tracks (especially as Beatles tracks are never licensed for compilations like this) but this collection provides a good sample.
In the UK, only fifteen records occupied the UK number one spot in 1967 (that includes Green green grass of home, which reached number one in 1966 but stayed there until mid-January of 1967). All of them are easy to find on CD but only one of them (Whiter shade of pale) is actually included here. Standing in the shadows of love, Zabadak, Ha ha said the clown, I was made to love her, Hole in my shoe, Reflections and Dedicated to the one I love all made at the top five in the UK.
Every track here made the top thirty or better. Some tracks (like Pamela Pamela, which just missed the UK top ten) don't come round very often on various artists compilations and it's nice to see them here.
This is not the definitive album of 1967 - flower power is un-represented and only one UK number one hit is included. Nevertheless, the music here is of a high quality and well worth the price.

1. Whiter shade of pale - Procol Harum

Her name may not be as instantly recognizable as Anita Baker's, but if you're a fan of Baker, you're bound to love Adams. After working toward a solid reputation in her native Kansas, she was discovered while working a hotel-lounge gig by Roland Orzabal of Tears for Fears and became one of the band's regular guests (their "Woman in Chains" is included here). This collection includes an impressive list of contributors (including Irene Cara on backing vocals) and worldwide hits like "Get Here," an emotional tearjerker that showcase's Adams's amazing voice. Many tracks veer into MOR territory (what else can you expect with a cover of "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me"?) and straight-out-of-a-musical style ("Embraceable You"); if you're looking for more funk in your soul, your best bet is "Rhythm of Life." --Rebecca Wallwork

I Gave it Away.......2007-02-07
I loved Circle of Love. This one dind of bored me.
A great buy........2007-01-05
Good quality. These are some great songs by Oleta Adams. The cover photo is not her best but the contents of the cd were superb. A worthy addition to your collection.
nice but too slow at times.......2006-02-25
nice voice, some of the songs have good rhythm. "Get here", though, in my opinion, is too slow and sugary, with themes which I heard way too many times. But overall, a good CD, to listen and relax.
The rhythm of life is wonderful!!.......2005-02-02
Just listen to this song. It is intoxicating. I for one am not a huge Oleta Adams "get here if you can" fan, however, few songs stir the soul and connect you with the rhythm of your own life and emotions like this one. Truly a modern day anthem that I feel a lot of people can connect with. To bad this song doesn't get more radio play. I think it's grammy worthy. This song will grab you and not let go until you are groovin and movin' such a cool song.. Listen....and .... ENJOY.....the rhythm of life...
Superb good!.......2004-12-19
I knew the possitive songs from Oleta Adams before on the radio.
But when I heard this women on stage I could hardly follow my senses. She is honestly overwhelming, smashing good!
What a Voice.
Even some days after her concert I could not believe I heard, saw, she gives so much!
This cd is a good overview of the wonderfull songs she had already song.
It's a true classic for you cd collection!
And you can play it for the rest of your life.
Good Luck,

Customer Reviews:
Shorty Long Essential.......2007-05-26
This collection is long over due. I only hope that a motown anthologhy
on Shorty will come next. Shorty made us dance, laugh and smile with his
comical perky music. Most of his best recordings are here. The only two
missing, are his excellent versions of "Stranded in the Jungle" and
"Chantily Lace". Also outstanding is the vocal "Night fo last", and the
Instumental "Night fo last", amazing, they're almost two different songs.
The instumental features a smoking call and answer between two guitars.
This collection just wets your appetite for much more.
Shorty Long .......2005-02-16
Man, this guy was one of the funkiest cats at Motown, but had a short-lived career :-( anyways some great material here like night fo' last, dont mess with my weekend, here comes the judge, etc.. dont miss out on this if you are at all a Motown fan, and btw, Jamerson, the legendary Motown bassist, provides a lotta nice grooves, so what are you waiting for? order it...
faboulous collection !!!!.......2001-10-05
great selection offering truly the best of shorty long...a somewhat overlooked singer, possibly due to his early demise in 1969. Features all his hits..Here comes the Judge / Don't mess with my Weekend / Function at the Junction / I had a dream, plus other gems you may or may not know. Truly great for any lover of Motown Soul !!

the one that got away.......2004-01-17
teena is bad, make no mistake. this cd has the usual fare of the other compilation discs. the stand out feature is the cut, "gonna have my cake...". this cut is not on any other disc except the original--wild and peaceful. the jazz flavor of this cut can only be appreciated by true teena fans. ...
Bubbly, funky Teena.......2003-10-12
Teena Marie is a passionate little engine of funk, soul and R&B. This collection of her early Motown hits kicks off with the wonderful I'm A Sucker For Your Love, a busy number with rollicking instrumentation and great male backing vocal.
Don't Look Back is more of the same, whilst Behind The Groove sees Teena in a more soulful mood although the track cooks with passion and rhythm. This late 1970/early 1980s Motown funk a la Rick James is really gripping and has stood the test of time very well, full of joie de vivre and highly danceable.
Square Biz is a highlight, a funky number with jittery nervous beat and incredible vocal variety as she sings, croons and raps in turn and It Must Be Magic is another tight number of prime 80s R&B. The Ballad Of Cradle Rob And Me is a great story song and a stunning mix of jazzy inflections and funky beat.
The style changes for Portuguese Love, a lovely torch song with some Latin infusions in the instrumental mix, whilst Aladdin's Lamp is a beautiful soulful ballad with plenty of tempo variation and poetic lyrics. On a similar note, Irons In The Fire and Yes Indeed are further slow but passionate ballads, the latter with particularly impressive piano.
Déjà Vu is another slow song with gripping poetic imagery and gentle instrumental flourishes. The album closes with the evocative Opus III, a short song with a spiritual undertone.
Teena Marie moves with ease from ebullient uptempo funk to flowing ballads and quiet-storm type torch songs, demonstrating her prowess and mastery of her chosen style, R&B - a great achievement for the petite blonde from California.
She has Graduated from the Genius Of Rick James.......2000-08-31
Lady T.has Graduated from the Genius of Rick James&Ran with it.you name the Instrument or Vibe she can do it.She deserves way more Love than Many of the no-Talent Hacks out today.not only does Her Voice sound Fantastic but Her Playing Skills are Tight.on Guitar,Bass,Keys,etc... Lady T is a One Woman Band.Deja Vu a track Rick James Wrote is Timeless. What a Piece of Words&Music it is?The Rest Of The Material is Very Essential&Classic Soul.Folks in the Know know that their's nothing out now that Matches Her Feelin'.
I Should of been here before (Deja Vu).......2000-07-03
The music on this album is about 20 years old. I've got half the tracks on vinyl, and did not expect to be still discovering how very talented Teena Marie is . For me the ultimate track on this CD is Deja Vu . Heard it at a wedding last week, bought this album from Amazon - haven't stopped listening yet. From the slow relaxed start, comes the sweet sound of Lady T :-
"I'm young and I'm old, I'm rich and I'm poor, Feel like I've been on this earth, many times before."
THEN the pace is increased with some sweet horns blowing in the wind, whilst she elightens us WITH :-
"If hate is on your mind, and you can't give love the time. If anger is your friend, don't you know when you die you'll come back again. It's in the masters plan, you'll come back woman or man, If your life is full of fear, don't you know when you die, you'll come back again I thank God, thank God, thank God I'm not coming back no more, been here before ...."
If you want a change from your usual boy-meets-girl lovesong, or just in need of spiritual upliftment, then you can't beat this timeless classic. I'm just sorry it took me so long to discover it - I should of been here before !
The Best of Marie's Motown Hits.......2000-01-25
While Marie had yet to come into her own artistically (she would accomplish that with her subsequent move to Epic Records in the early 1980's), this Motown compilation offers some wonderful gems from the fiery singer/songwriter/producer. Among the best: the dance classic "I Need Your Lovin,'" the catchy "It Must Be Magic," the engaging "Aladdin's Lamp," and the jazzy, clever "The Ballad Of Cradle Rob and Me," which features a rocking horn section and Teena scatting: what could be a better combination than that? The finest moment in this collection occurs with the 12th track, the ballad "Yes Indeed." Featuring Patrice ("Forget-Me-Nots") Rushen on piano as well as a flourshing string section, this ballad is one of Teena Marie's most luminous to date, even after she reached her full ballad-singing potential on Epic. This song is worth the price of this whole CD. Marie starts off quietly, sounding at peace with her love relationship, and "Yes Indeed" does sound like an affirmation. But by the end of the song, the mood has subtly changed, and now the words "yes indeed" become those of heatbreak and of desparation. One can only imagine what it would have been like to witness the recording of this song, as Marie lets her powerful voice go full-throttle by the end of the song, baring every emotion. By the end, the instruments drop off for a moment as Marie asks, "Do I love you...." and then luciously descends the scale, searching for her answer, as we wait. Finally, she finds it, and as the instruments swell to a finish. This song is emotionally-draining and it's presence alone makes this CD a must-have over Marie's other Motown greatest-hits compilations.

Their best collection.......2007-03-04
Kool & The Gang has released several other compliation albums, but this definitely ranks as their best. Although they are known for their funky, up-tempo dance tracks, Kool & The Gang have released many popular ballads as well. "Cherish" is definitely their signature ballad, as it received tons of airplay during the '80's and still frequents old school radio stations as well. Its cross-over appeal to a variety of audiences made it a huge hit in its time. "Joanna" was another hit that hit the radio frequently in the early '80's, but didn't quite it the public market like the aforementioned hit. If you need a song to just kick back and ponder the yester-years, cue up "September Love" and just mellow out on the couch. It's definitely one of my favorite ballads of all-time, and that includes probably about 5,000 ballads I've heard in my time. "Bad Woman" is a song that not many are familiar with, but once I heard it, it definitely was one that I planned on cueing up many more times. A few of their ballads tend to overplay their instrumental bridges, but their sounds are quite relaxing and on occasions, mesmerizing. A few of my statements may seem over-the-top, but the album as a whole is one I'd recommend to anyone that enjoys old school slow jams.

This is a great cd. We have been looking for the song "As One" for about 22 years. That is the song that they played for me and my husband at our wedding. The album As One has been discontinued in the U.S. for some reason. I am just thrilled to have it. Thank you

It's alright........2005-01-02
The music on the CD leaves me wanting a bit more each time, but it never gets to that point.
The vocals are alright, but not perfect in my opinion. The music is good, but I think there could be better everything done in my opinion.
All around a solid CD, but I think there is room for improvement and then it will be totally awesome!
Solid CD.......2004-10-13
The lead singer/guitarist in this band Fred is actually now in the band Taking Back Sunday where he plays guitar and does some back up vocals. However, this band is completely different than Taking Back Sunday. They play an Emo rock that sounds a lot like the old Promise Ring meets pop punk. The vocals are sung very passionately and are rather smooth and laid back at times. Fred is the principle song writer and has a degree in jazz guitar from Temple University in Philadelphia, PA so you can here so Jazz influence in this as well.
my favorite cd.......2002-08-22
Breaking Pangaea rocks it hard. This is the cd I listen to more than any other cd in my collection. It has been in my car cd player almost since the day I bought it. Go see them live too, it's even better than the cd because they have so much energy and they're so musically tight. Then you can pick up a copy of their 5 song EP as well, which is equally amazing! Buy this cd now!

More hard to find classics.......2006-03-05
Spectrum have shown some enterprise with the Motown catalogue, and this series must have hit a winning formula to have reached Volume 4. The Big Hits make the releases sufficiently commercial to allow the inclusion of the Hard To Find Classics, which obviously appeal more to the collector.
This is the first of the series to have been compiled in the UK. Paul Nixon has been generous with the rarities, mostly unavailable or long deleted on CD prior to this collection, and has added valuable liner information. The Northern Soul fraternity has shown a preference for a certain kind of Motown sound and there are several prime examples here although its scope is thankfully wider.
Well known names include Marvin Gaye, whose cover of Motown-legend Frank Wilson lay in the vaults until 1979, and the Marvelettes, with an album track from 1969, but it is the more unsung heroes that flourish here. Barbara McNair, a former Playboy model and actress, smoulders wonderfully through Steal Away Tonight. The Elgins contribute It's Been A Long Long Time, a single that sounds so Motown-esque its origins as a Sammy Cahn/Jule Styne standard from the 1940s are completely buried. Eddie Holland added a new vocal to a song assigned to Barrett Strong before he left the label, and had a Top Ten Billboard R&B hit with the Jamie label in 1961.
A B-side by the forgotten ensemble Rick Robin And Him turns out to be a male/female duet, but as the writer is Richard Witte, I wonder if he is Rick, and the track is actually by Rick, a female Robin and Him (whoever Him is). Barbara Randolph's classic I Got A Feeling gets a repeat airing (it was also on Volume 1) and the great Chris Clark closes the collection in fine style with a superb track from her first album, which makes one want the whole LP, Soul Sounds - and that's what these compilations are all about.
A MUST HAVE FOR MOTOWN COLLECTORS!.......2002-07-31
Being a Motown fan ever since my early teens, and no longer having those hundreds of 45s that I collected, it's exciting to listen to some little-known cuts that I used to have. "A Little Bit of Sandy" by Paul Petersen was one of those, as was "I Got A Feeling" by Barbara Randolph, and "It's Been A Long, Long Time" by the Elgins. Many of those I've not heard before have grown on me, like "Cheatin' is Telling on You" (The Lollipops); "Crying in the Night" (The Monitors); "I Miss You Baby" (Marv Johnson); "Now Is the Time for Love" (The Marvelettes)! In my book all of these deserved airplay in their day and had hit potential...great, tight productions! Another really catchy tune (and "mystery song"), "Cause You Know Me" by Rick Robin and Him, sounds much like R. Dean Taylor, in a similar vain to "Let's Go Somewhere." I recommend that all Motown lovers get this CD. You won't be disappointed; it's more than worth the cost!!
Not as good as the others.......2002-07-28
In this fourth installment of the U.K.'s Spectrum label's series of Motown "Big Hits and Rare Classics", there are very few hits and none of them are "big". Most of these cuts would be considered hard-to-find and there are quite a few charted Tamla/Motown singles that have not seen the light of day on CD and would have made better candidates than many of those included here. Only three of the tracks were top-100 U.S.A. pop hits with the biggest being the San Remo Strings' "Hungry For Love". On the plus side is the inclusion of the Elgins' last pop-charting single "It's Been A Long Long Time". Point is, this disc is a bit of a disappointment selection-wise leaving one to wonder if this is the end of this series. Sound quality is OK - sometimes typically muddy Motown - and on a par with other discs in this series. Tracks appear in mono with the exception of 3,4,8,11,13,15,16 and 18. The liner notes booklet does contain backround info on the included tracks creating some interest in these mostly forgotten titles. Mostly for the die-hard Motown fan or collector, this CD falls somewhat short on its potential. Hopefully, there will be further CDs in this series that will resurrect some of the still lost Motown singles.
A must for Motown aficionados.......2002-05-18
To be honest, I didn't like this CD very much at first. I had just gotten the 'Motown Connoisseurs' CD, and I must say that 'Big Hits & Hard To Find Classics Vol. 4' isn't quite in the same class of quality as that fantastic disc, or the three previous volumes. But after repeated listening, the music on this compilation has really grown on me. I highly recommend it to all true Motown fans, in addition to Volumes 1-3 and 'Connoisseurs'!
