My Own Prison

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
It took a few years, but the "Seattle sound" migrated south. In 1997 Creed emerged from the sunny state of Florida wielding dark and dulcet postgrunge tones. Their 10-cut debut, My Own Prison, has became a surprising success by filling a niche for needy teen gloom-rockers. Singer Scott Stapp has the soulful and rich Eddie Vedder inflections down pat, but despite Creed's slightly hackneyed approach, My Own Prison is full of strong, memorable, tuneful songs (and numerous solid singles) coupled with compelling and dark emotions. Titles such as "Illusion," "Unforgiven," "What's This Life For," and "Torn" clearly peg Creed as dour introverts. But despite lyrics such as "Their souls are lost / Because they could never find / What's this life for," Creed is musically tight and dynamic, drawing on melodies that are often moving and uplifting... in a depressing sort of way, of course. --Katherine Turman --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

3 out of 5 stars on their way.......2007-06-30

Compared to the music Creed later gave us, this debut album must be qualified as a strong start. Understandably, it falls short of the band's mature sound.

Still, there are some rockin' good tracks here. They were signaling the Creed they'd become.

Some of the lyrics are a bit self-possessed, but on the way to breakout.

Stapp's voice is as good as it gets, but the band had not yet caught up with him.

'Not to worry, however: they would do so in good time. And then the music would get to be a very good thing.

5 out of 5 stars To not own is ignorant! 4.7.......2007-04-11

This cd is just great. Contains the best Creed song in 'Ode', but also features 'One", 'My Own Prison', 'Illusion' and the absolutely stellar 'Unforgiven'. From Heavy to mellow, there is something for everyone here. I agree, this is one of the best debuts out there. Great guitar work and not overproduced (the ONLY problem with Weathered IMO). There is no need in debating the obvious. Not everyone liked Creed but to not see the magic in at least some of their music is impossible.

5 out of 5 stars One Of The Greatest Debut Albums!!!.......2007-03-14

In all genres of music it seems that some of the best bands...their first album is always the best. Bands seemed to buckle under the pressure to follow up their second, third album to match their first. Creed is no exception. To their credit, it would have been almost impossible to follow up another album that would compare to "My Own Prison". This album is as close to flawless as it gets. To those of you that have listen to this album in depth, you are aware of what I am saying. The songs, it would seem, were not designed to get major radio play, or end up in the top 10. Every song is filled with pure soul lifting music. Call it Grunge, Christian Rock or whatever adjective you choose to use. All I know is this album is a classic and by the pitiful standards that are used to judge music today, it will be a long time coming before another first album or any album has the pure genius to be classified as a classic the same day that it's released.

5 out of 5 stars One of my all time favorite albums.......2007-03-08

I actually just bought this as a replacement for my original copy. I know people either loved or hated Creed but this album is simply phenominal, there's not a bad song on it and the guitar work is amazing. If you only buy one Creed album in your life, this should be it!

5 out of 5 stars Lost without Creed.......2007-01-11

It was a sad day for all of us when Creed disbanded. They were such an outstanding band. However, Scott Stapp is carrying on the tradition and we can now see who the real talent was in the band Creed. Scott still performs as well as he did when he was a member of Creed, and his lyrics are still just as captivating.

5 out of 5 stars The Original Masterpiece!.......2006-09-29

With only 6,000 copies made and distributed in Central Florida this item is very hard to find, especially since all unsold copies were recalled by Wind-Up Records upon signing the band and acquiring the rights to the album. The copy I posess cost me $310 on eBay back in 2001 before Weathered was released.

This album was a monument in rock history as it was the first debut rock album to carry four number 1 singles. Add to that the fact that it was released by a brand new record label, as Creed was Wind-Up's first sign. It was also produced by a brand new producer, John Kurzweg, in his home studio with NO mastering information given on either release meaning the sound was phenomenal enough to be released without it. Very rare, especially in today's market. Also, the band's manager was new to the game as well, former club owner Jeff Hanson.

The recordings on this original release are the same as you hear on the official Wind-Up release, but the mix is slightly different with a couple songs having extra parts or different parts altogether such as "One". The first chorus is extended, the bridge has no vocals and is a breakdown of the chorus, and it also has a more live show garbage can ending instead of the psychedelic guitar fade out we've always heard. Listening to the Wind-Up version after hearing the original rendition one can tell that the new parts were punched in. "My Own Prison" is about a minute longer with a longer intro, a longer first chorus and some extra vocals on the second and third choruses. "What's This Life For" has a much longer intro attached before Tremonti strikes G and the song begins where we're used to hearing it start. There's also a cooler build effect with Stapp on the choruses. "Torn" has a more abrupt ending with a soft cymbol crash after the final licks are played a few times. "Sister" has some altogether different lyrics to it.

These are the changes I remember right off-hand. There are a few others to be sure. If you are a Creed fan and are willing to spend a large chunk of change to acquire this CD if and when you find it I assure you that you will be satisfied. If you just want to check out the different versions I have found them readily available on a few peer to peer networks. Either way, you'll find the differences interesting and perhaps even end up feeling the original versions were better than what was finally released to the mass public as I do.

I think Creed was a great band and they were in some way responsible for helping rock come back a little bit. I remember being stoked to find out Weathered, which was released at the end of November 2001, outsold every rock album that had been released that entire year by December 31. It's too bad they couldn't get along and continue as a group. But then again, it's a tough job with alot of pressure, physical demands and really high expectations. What can ya' do?

    5 out of 5 stars MOP - WOW.......2001-05-08

Wow... This is some good pounding music with a spirtual overtone. Hits home with all of us in one way or another. This is a great piece of work. I listen to it at least four times a week or more.

5 out of 5 stars Better than the non-import version.......2000-12-05

This CD is better than the non-import version because of the extra songs. This CD shows the great talent of creed. Deep meaningful lyrics and powerful rock music make a steller combination. Creed's songs express the song which is in almost everybodies soul. Every song is worth listening too on this CD.

    4 out of 5 stars Somethin' new.......2000-05-04

If you like music and appreciate talented, meaningful musicians, than I suggest buying either creed cd. Scott Stapp is an unbelievable singer who belts out soulful tune after another. The musicians who back him up are very original in their style which is ever changing from one song to the next.

    5 out of 5 stars Meaning + Talent = Great Music.......2000-04-09

All of Creed's music means something. I can find a way to relate all the songs on this CD to something; every song tells a story or delivers a message, mostly just to get one to sit back and think. The blend of Scott Stapp's unique voice and awesome music... it's just soothing. One wouldn't expect hard rock to be soothing, but that's what this is. I definitely recommend this to anyone who likes to rock!

5 out of 5 stars You need to own this prison!.......2000-06-23

What can I say? Wow, what a great CD. I have loved Creed's CD My Own Prison for so long, but I finally found a better CD. This limited edition which includes their song Bound and Tied from the Dead Man On Campus soundtrack is a spiritual journey from start to finish; almost a rewarding CD one might say. Bound and Tied adds so much to this CD, for it is yet another gritty, toe-nail curling grunge song from the Tallahasse band Creed.

    5 out of 5 stars Mistake - Typo.......2000-03-02

The track listing is supposed to be the My Own Prison CD + 2 tracks which are What's This Life For (acoustic) and Bound & Tied. I have no clue what 'Tied Down' is all about. Never heard of the song. I don't even think Creed themselves has heard of it either.

After 5 years, still "torn" off creed's 1997 debute "my own prison" is one of creed's best tunes to date, no contest. Full of raw emotion and presents a band in there begining stage, yet at times may come off as a band in there prime. Dark, stapp comes through reflecting on past experiences, yet repenting through the great communicator, music. The acoustic version is certainly no exception, shows creed are extremely impressive with acoustics. Highly recomended....

1 out of 5 stars Taped for the trashcan.......2005-09-02

    This is realy horrible!

    How can somebody do this?
I don't know, what some people who reviewd this record before me thought, when they wrote thier review.
These songs might have been composed by Mark Tremonty and Scott Stapp and they are greate in thier orignal version, but the tracks on this record are cheap Midi Files wich somebody played on his trashy keyboard.

I guess if Mark Tremonty or Scott Stapp knew about this, they would sue this guy for it.

This isn't even an official creed record.
So people. If you realy like the band, please don't buy this record. Buy "my own prison", "human clay", "weatherd" or the "Higher" Tour EP, but not this stuff. It's just a Trick to steal your money.

1 out of 5 stars Uh, this is a bunch of MIDIs.......2004-01-02

You can download midis from various web sites on the internet and they will sound better than this. The description is misleading because it says it is an orchestra, which it is not. Someone threw the album together on a high-end keyboard to make a quick buck. Avoid!!!!!!

    1 out of 5 stars Garbage.......2003-05-08

This CD was a complete waste of money. The music was all done on a computer or keyboard or something. It might have had potential if they'd used real instruments.

There's not a single good thing about this disc.

1 out of 5 stars do NOT buy this...........2002-12-06

I plead you... do not waste your money on this CD. This is NOT a Creed album, nor is it even real musicians. The entire album is comprised of a bunch of midi's... not only is the music bad, but the artist who made these midi's got all the tracj names wrong too! Track 1 "What If" is actually "with Arms Wide Open".... what a waste of good plastic.

    4 out of 5 stars Constructive criticism.......2001-12-19

Following on from "A music fan" from ID USA with his/her assessment of "A music fan" from Reston, VA, whilst constuctive criticism is always deemed valuable this rhetoric is almost tantamount to being bigoted. Whether Creed are Christian, Muslim, Jewish, etc, is irrelevant. What does matter is that they are quality songsmiths. I live in a country where the public are 'drip-fed' meaningless 'record company manufactured pop' drivel by the local radio stations, where all other music genres are marginalised into one to two hour late night shows. Count yourself lucky that bands such as Creed get fair airplay before you demean them and the rest of us as "music for people who hate music"
