Gold Medal [Enhanced]
Editorial Reviews
Album Description
The Donnas' eagerly awaited Gold Metal takes the top prize for vital, edgy, modern rock'n'roll at its finest. The quartet's 2002 break-through Atlantic debut, "Spend the Night," debuted in the #1 position on Billboards "Heatseekers" chart, fuelled by the radio/video hit, "Take It Off," massive critical acclaim, and high-profile TV performances on Saturday Night Live, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and Late Night with Conan O'Brien. Now the Donnas have raised the bar, as musicians and songwriters, to deliver the best work of their career. Produced by Butch Walker (Avril Lavigne, Injected), tracks like the provocative first single, "Fall Behind Me," and the poignant "Revolver" shimmer with rock energy, blasting off the blocks with newfound invention and intensity. With Gold Metal, the Donnas take an Olympian leap forward, setting a sparkling new standard for pure rock'n'roll brilliance. DVD CONTENT INCLUDES: 5.1 Surround Sound Mix Video for Fall Behind Me Making of the Video Feature --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Customer Reviews:
A definite part of an Chapin fan's collection.......2007-03-11
This CD was recommended from a friend. I got it & have played it repeatedly. It has some Harry Chapin commentaries on it from the man himself. A lot of live versions of his hits as well. An integral part of a collection form an Harry Chapin fan.
A Representative Anthology.......2006-01-28
Harry Chapin wrote story songs. They were often about folks who were frightened, disappointed, confused, lonely and sad. Being all these things when I was a lad, these songs spoke to me and I really enjoyed them and Mr. Chapin. In a fit of nostalgia I got ahold of this cd and was sorely disappointed.
His lyrics are usually prolix, unfelicitous, stilted, and forced things that poorly serve the maudlin tales he wants to tell us. One of the worst is Mr. Tanner, the tale of a man who lives for his singing, but quits when someone says something mean to him. I sure do feel sorry for him, but not in the way that Chapin wants me to. I'd expect this sort of thing from a teenager, but not from a grown man -- Harry or Mr. Tanner. Aside from "Cat's in the Cradle" and "Circle," most of his songs are dreadful.
The music is ok at best, as is the singing.
I liked the spoken tracks best, because these show Harry Chapin as the good man he was and his commitment to doing good things.
We need a Sequel.......2005-12-14
All of Harry "Mr. Storyteller's" Chapin's classics are here with the exception of one glaring omission, "Sequel". This song was the sequel to "Taxi" and if you play them back to back,"Sequel" seamlessly continues the story started by "Taxi". Sort of a mini series or music. At least "W*O*L*D*" and "Cat's in the Cradle" are represented here. We still love you Harry. You made us think. And Listen. You'll never be forgotten. Thanks for the music. It was great. It's a shame that it was cut short and silenced long before his time. Great tunes.
A Great Story Telling Folk Singer. RIP Mr. Chapin.......2005-10-28
Harry Chapin was a rare singer and songwriter who broke out of the categories that most artists are placed in . This guy was a wonderful storyteller in his songs which spoke of love, heartache and the everyday man. This album contains the Classsic "Cat's In The Cradle" which is about a man who realizes that his time with his son has quickly faded away which he laments greatly. Sadly Mr. Chapin was killed in a car accident on his way to perform at a concert and the world lost a great talented musician and songwriter. Mr. Chapin was also very modest about his performing . I once heard him say that having an orchestra playing behind him was like "putting hot mag wheels on a Rolls Royce" or words to that effect. RIP Harry. You are sadly missed. Perhaps you and Roy Orbison are now lending your voices and musical talents to the Angel's Choir in Heaven. I hope so.
The Gold Medal Collection w/ Harry Chapin.......2005-09-26
So many of Harry Chapin's songs are alike. If you like this style of music you'll enjoy this album. I really enjoyed listening to "Cat's In The Cradle", "Taxi" and W*O*L*D* again.

The Donnas proved themselves more than apt at playing fast and fun party rock in a Ramones-y mold from their teenage get-go in 1998, then quickly amassed a huge following for their increasingly "pro," deliriously fun retro-rock. In 2002, they surprised lots of folks with Spend the Night, an album that showed more lyrical finesse as well as Cheap Trick/ Thin Lizzy-ish pop-rock flourishes. On 2004's Gold Medal, however, the wayback machine continues to spiral backwards, and the result is far less pleasurable. The songs plod along with little reward, most of them "going over like a lead zeppelin," to quote Keith Moon. There are some nice touches, from the Zombies-esque backing vocals on "Don't Break Me Down" to the truly psychedelic guitar solo in "Out of My Hands." But in the end, Gold Medal will likely be remembered as the Donnas album with way too much cowbell on it. --Mike McGonigal

Customer Reviews:
This album rocks!.......2007-04-09
The person who wrote the amazon review for this album must have been a complete idiot. This album is great. I love every single song on it. It is a great CD to turn up really loud and sing to at the top of your lungs while driving with all your windows down. I have always liked the Donnas and yes, this album does sound different, more produced and less punk/garage/party - esque, but it retains the spirit of what the Donnas are all about through and through. I think it is a move in the right direction for them and I look forward to their new album coming out this year.
Not for the squeamish!.......2006-11-10
The Donnas will steal your allegiance and give you new reasons to listen to girl bands. If you love the Dixie Chicks, Indigo Girls, The Roches, or any number of other talented girl groups, prepare to have your stereotypes smashed and your expectations fulfilled. These women rock!
Through their magical paintbrush of music and lyrics they will transport you into their world and shake you up. Not about to settle for less, they have formed their own genre, their own sound, their own music. Talent abounds, obviously, in the driving rhythm and deeply satisfying music of their songs...songs that give you pause to think and ponder their message. Songs pregnant with meaning. Songs to make you look upon The Donnas with respect and admiration for their talent.
Turn it up, if you dare! And you'd better love to dance.
good album, where's the next?.......2006-10-14
As previous reviewers note, this album was definitely more 'produced' than previous records. Surely it was record company pressure, like, okay girls, now we're going to cash in, turn you into big stars. But the girls maybe weren't so comfortable, so it's not their best effort. And guess what, two years later, still no new album. Wonder what's going on?
A Transitional Effort.......2006-07-31
It's been mentioned before, but the thing that struck me most about "Gold Medal" is the production. There is NO reverb or delay or ambiance at ALL - in some ways this makes the end result more immediate and accessible - but in others, oddly enough, it makes the band (make no mistake about it - this is a GREAT band!) sound somehow distant and sterile. The appeal of previous Donnas CDs was the sense that you'd turned the wrong corner on your way home and just happened upon the coolest and most rocking band on the planet. Listening to The Donnas was a bit like being in the garage while they cranked it out like only they can. They CAN crank it out and they do so here with a maturity and a willingness to expand their horizons that takes some serious balls. I'm sure they could recycle the familiar Donnas formula if that's what they wanted to do - but, to their credit, they're smart enough to know that in the end they'd end up being little more than a parody of themselves (unless I've missed something there's not a single reference to underwear on the entire CD!) After repeated listenings I realize that I LIKE these songs - I'd love to hear them in the garage - or on the stage. As good as the production on this CD is (Hell, I'm considering experimenting with a similarly "Dry" sound on my projects - I can see places where it would work well..) it's just WRONG for The Donna's. They need the "live" feel for their songs to have the immediacy that hits you between the eyes and keeps on hitting. They are growing as artists and musicians and I salute them for the effort and I'll be in line to buy the next effort. Go Girls! (Women?) This CD will one day be seen as the boundry between "The female Ramones" period and whatever they decide to become as a unique entity carving out a place in Rock'n'Roll history of their own. (PS - I'm available to produce and my rates are extremely reasonable!) But PLEASE - next time choose a producer who understands what makes The Donnas special instead of one who only knows what makes HIM special.
Donnas grow up.......2006-04-15
Gold Medal stands apart from other Donna's releases in that it actually sounds like an album instead of a quick battle of the bands set...I can actually tell the songs apart! Don't get me wrong, they always deliver, but this more mature, polished sound with no less spunk is refreshing.

lame.......2006-02-14
The donnas are completely unoriginal. They are posers and pretend to be bad asses. Totally lame.
Dual Disk Malfunction.......2005-07-29
Yes-there was a pressing problem with the disk. All of them skip/stop at the same point. They were recalled, and you had the option of keeping the cover if you traded in the disk for the regular CD version. The dual disk may someday be re-released, but I think it's unlikely, since the Donnas aren't as popular as the Rolling Stones (hey, I love the Donnas, but let's be real). So, more than likely, the dual disk will probably be something of a collectors item some day...
Anyway, I would have to give this CD 5 stars. It's that good. If your musical taste leans toward 70s/80s hard rock/metal like Joan Jett, Judas Priest, Bad Company, etc, you'll love this. Buy it, and play it loud and often...
the Donnas cut short?.......2005-04-28
I love the Donnas, and I love this album. But the last track on the CD side is only 53 seconds and just cut-off in the middle of the song. Did this happen to anyone else?

Brother Jim.......2005-09-12
The last album Milt made for Pablo (May 1985). Jimmy Heath and Harold Vick join him on the front line, playing tenor and soprano saxophones. Vick is passable on soprano, though he doesn't create much warmth on the horn; on SLEEVES both play soprano and Heath sounds uncomfortable. Milt is featured on three tracks, one totally alone (LULLABY OF THE LEAVES), which as is usually the case on solo performances finds Jackson all over the place; the restraint afforded by the rhythm section on his other features (ILL WIND and HOW HIGH THE MOON) is welcomed. Joe Pass shows up on one track (SUDDEN DEATH), with the horns sitting out. The playing on this CD is acceptable, but it's not an essential Jackson CD.
