4 out of 5 stars Yea! for Papa Nez.......2007-06-28

Who knew that Mike Nesmith could pull off Disco. If you want to hear a very different side to this former Monkee this is one of his multiple genres to dig into.

5 out of 5 stars VERY ESSENTIAL NESMITH ALBUM.......2004-12-23

This is Nesmith's best studio album since RANCH STASH. Recorded in 1979, the album has a different rocker feel and one wonders if this was his swan song to audio albums at the time and letting it all hang out. Al Perkins helps on electric guitar as
he did on the excellent LIVE AT PALAIS recorded in 1978. CRUISIN has to be the best song here with FLYING, CARIOCA, LIGHT AND CAPSULE also being excellent efforts. As good as it is this album ranks behind: HITS KEEP ON COMING, TANTAMOUNT TO TREASON, MAGNETIC SOUTH, NEVADA FIGHTER, LOOSE SALUTE, LIVE AT PALAIS and maybe RANCH STASH in this order.

5 out of 5 stars This is the one to get..........2004-08-03

Ten years after leaving the Monkees, Michael Nesmith came full circle with an album that ranks among his best ever. "Infinite Rider On The Big Dogma" has something for everyone...Monkees fan or not. The Texan wit that Nez has been known for is abundant, and his smart lyrics tell all kinds of stories...the music is totally diverse yet unmistakably Nesmith. The voice behind some of the most amazing country rock ever branches out into some mighty interesting territory here...a total pleasure to listen to from start to finish. Backed by some of the finest session men, Nez's 1979 outing is as good as it gets. To further enhance your enjoyment...spend the extra cash and get Nez's "Elephant Parts" DVD with plenty of comedy and the videos to half the songs from this album...you'll see where some of the best music video really began (Elephant Parts received the very first Video Grammy...you'll also find out where The Tragically Hip got their name too!) This was the album that proved Nez wasn't just rock and roll's "other space cowboy" (sorry, Steve) but one hell of a songwriter with an unmistakable voice. Put the headphones on. This stuff is great!

In terms of gimmick appeal, what could be more absurd than casting Alanis Morissette as God? But that's exactly who Morissette plays in a cameo role for the latest Kevin Smith (Clerks, Chasing Amy) movie. In return for being cast as the highest deity, Morissette has contributed a previously unreleased track, "Still," that features all the hallmarks of her style, from multitracked vocals that whine and snarl around the melody to guitars and freaky electronic effects (electric sitar?) that shade the sound towards a very un-Catholic Middle Eastern groove. The remainder of the soundtrack features no such pop rewards. Instead, film scoring veteran Howard Shore (Philadelphia, Seven) contributes eight instrumental pieces that are far more playful than solemn, performed by a 30-piece version of the London Philharmonic Orchestra. One additional track, "Mooby the Golden Calf," features indecipherable lyrics by Kevin Smith and a children's choir clearly running amuck. --Rob O'Connor

5 out of 5 stars Howard Shore,,,A Breath of fresh Air........2007-01-01

I like listening to Howard Shore, or Jerry Goldsmith, While I am Milking the Cows....You cannot go wrong with this Album.

5 out of 5 stars Howard Shore must have his own brilliant Muse!.......2002-05-18

When I learned that Kevin Smith's movie, DOGMA had a soundtrack that was all musical score, I didn't believe it until I listened. Just like the movie, all musical cues are there and a couple I guess I missed upon watching (and listening). Howard Shore has this way of giving music its own soul, like its a character in the film that changes emotion. The choral adds to the grandeur of the subject matter (God, angels, demons). An added bonus, Alanis Morrisette's "Still", which is "ironic" if you've seen the movie and listen to the lyrics. Smith has actually produced a G-rated soundtrack for an R-rated movie! That has to be some feat. When you listen to the last few beautiful tracks, take a look again at the cover to see Jay & Silent Bob (oh, my God, it's the same movie!)Absolutely breathtaking music! Religious folk and movie music enthusists will all be satisfied.

2 out of 5 stars No! No! No!.......2001-08-25

Y'want a review that's helpful? Here you go: Every review of this album goes like this: "I loved Alanis' song, Still". Loved it. As for the rest of the album...where was I? Oh yes, *Still* is a great song." Arrgh! But, if you scroll down a bit, you can get the lyrics to Mooby (the choir song), as written by Kevin Smith. At least that's something.

5 out of 5 stars Still.......2001-07-14

One of the best songs i ever heard by Alanis.

4 out of 5 stars The First Track is Amazing.......2000-12-20

The big attraction to this soundtrack is Alanis Morissette's previously unreleased track "STILL". The song itself is amazing. It encompasses the dark yet gentle far Eastern melodies that have become Morissette's trademark since the 1998 release "Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie".

The song itself is extremely relaxing and thought provoking. It appeals to both religious and non-religious persons. As the film itself "DOGMA" indicates there aren't a number of God's that are delegated to different denominations. There is probabaly one higher force at work on everyones behalf (segregation is not necessary)

That is the message that I got through the song itself. Morissette's usual clever word use enriches the song and it is a pleasure to listen to. The tempo is also perfectly set the the end credits of the film.

In all I would say buy this soundtrack because the first track by itself is worth the money. The other tracks are extremely powerful however (all instrumental by the way). They are good back ground music.

Like I said if you are a Morissette fan then this soundtrack will defintely please you and if you are not it may not be the wisest choice. If you are unsure try and find the lyrics to "STILL" online and then make your judgement.

P.S It will be interesting to see if "STILL" makes it onto her new album.

5 out of 5 stars Now this is the Modern Grindcore!!!.......2005-02-10

These swedes are quite frankly just plain awesome. While most grind band's offer little if any variety in their songs Asterisk*(THIS is the real band name, NOT Asterix) manage to inject plenty while staying true to the basic essence of grindcore, which is basically to melt the skin off your listener's faces with a nuclear-detonated wall of noise. How they do that while incorporating a bit of piano,punk-ish like guitars,a cover of Queen's "Ogre Battle"(?!),almost hardcore like breakdowns, techno, minimalistic noise, and even an excerpt from Woody Allen beats the hell out of me. All the songs have their own unique bits to them, instead of blurring together into an almost undistinguishable noise(Not to say that's always a bad thing...). Also noted is that Discordance Axis' vocalist Jon Chang did the cover art and layout. I don't know if I dare say it but...this album might be as important as Napalm Death's 'Scum' when it first came out, maybe not genre-defining but definately genre-bending. A must have for fans of the grindcore genre, THIS IS THE NEW GRIND!!!

5 out of 5 stars Mike Pope is the way.......2003-09-20

When it comes to getting it done on the bass, Mike Pope is the way. He can play it all. If you ever get a chance, call up the University of North Texas, get the jazz department, and try to get a copy of Lab Band cds from 91 and 92. He may be on more, but those are the only two I own with Pope on them. From the slow melodic ballads (Slow Heat-written by director Neil Slater)to the fast bop(Fingers-Thad Jones)to the electric fusion (Havona-Weather Report)he makes it happen. You know that feeling when someone begins to play a pretty fast lick, and you kinda wonder if they're going to have to cut it off early because they might run out of dexterity or ideas?...
He lacks in neither. He can thrown down when he needs to, but overall his playing is concise, leaving room for others to get their job done as well. I just checked out this CD because I was listening to my NT lab band cds the other night, and I got the urge to see what CDs he may have out, and unsurprisingly, he's got a couple of solo projects, this being one. I particularly love this one because it covers a wider musical spectrum. His other album, "Lay of the Land" is a more straight ahead approach and equally as impressive.

This is the most spiritual album that I have recently heard. It touches the depths of the cultural unconscious. Id, ego ,and super ego are in good healthy balance.Unknowingly the artists were on the same wave lengths as some of their spiritual ancestors such a Bach and Monk. It touches the soul.

          5 out of 5 stars "dark ambient".......2005-02-27

This is the first piece of music I have ever heard from this genre, and I have yet to even listen to it all the way through. However, what I have heard is very emotive. I am amazed that such slow-burning music can be so captivating. This is a downer to listen to, and not just in concept like William Basinski's work, but in aesthetic. The samples blend together; it is nearly impossible to tell one instrument from the next. Most songs have a recurring pattern in the foreground, which at first listen seems to be just a repetive wall of sound. A few minutes in, however, and the listener will notice some clanking machines far away in the distance, or a subtly shifting violin loop, or a wave rolling up onto the shore and sucking them into the deep. Some of it, like "dead people's things," is gorgeous, and some of it, like "cloudchamber," is oppressive, but it is all very, very depressing.

I will point out that true appreciation of "morals & dogma" requires somewhat attentive listening on headphones. As this is ambient music, some people might be averse to it. I guarantee, however, that as an emotional experience it will not fall through.
