Denis Leary's stance as an unregenerate, chain-smoking, meat-eating, angry young man is intense, to say the least. But his act made him a star for one reason: His jokes are funny. No Cure for Cancer is drawn mostly from Leary's one-man show of the same name, which is full of tough love for '90s therapy-addicted crybabies, and no-holds-barred advice for idiots (which is to say, anyone who gets in Leary's way). Head for the hills when he picks up a guitar, as he does on several ill-advised comedic songs here, but listen up when Leary's straight talk makes perfect (and hilarious) sense. To crack addicts, for example, his message is simple: "Never do a drug named after a part of your own ass." --Daniel Durchholz

5 out of 5 stars HYSTERI-FREAKING-CAL.......2007-04-05

I saw this special the first time it played on a cable movie channel (I think it was HBO). I laughed so hard, my jaws hurt. Only wish it was a DVD, b/c the looks on his face make the joke sometimes.

3 out of 5 stars Has not held up over the years........2007-01-10

There were some good laughs on this cd. But his over the top manic delivery was too much for me and the jokes seemed stale these days. I know that this album is a favorite among many, but I am not one of those

1 out of 5 stars Fallen Idol.......2006-06-11

I remember seeing 'No Cure For Cancer' on TV in the early 1990s, and being absolutely on the floor laughing. About a week back, after an interval of 14 years and having heard and LOVED Bill Hicks's routines since, I saw it again and barely raised a titter.

Do read 'American Scream' (biography of Bill Hicks)to learn about a comic with REAL integrity who truly 'played from the heart', as he was so found of urging us all to do. Then see if Leary's erzatz imitation does much for you.

And yes, it doesn't look too good that the end of Leary's stand-up career coincided with Hicks's death.

I say this reluctantly because I have only looked into the matter recently, and have actually been a fan of Leary for 14 years, both as stand-up and actor - but once you check out Hicks's work and look into the facts, it's hard to have respect for Leary any more.

The amazing thing is that he got away with it.

5 out of 5 stars Big Fat Dead Guy in a Bathtub.......2006-03-04

There are two things that without them, it wouldn't seem like March, first are Shamrock Shakes, the other being Denis Leary's No Cure for Cancer. The ultimate Irishman of my generation released the album during my formative years and me and my friends had the whole thing memorized for years to come. And you just have to play Traditional Irish Folk Song every St. Patrick's Day. In fact the song was the inspiration on my answering machine my freshman year with the lines,

We drink and we sing
And we drink and we sing
Hey!
We drink and we drive
And we puke and we drink
Hey!
We drink and we fight
And we bleed and we cry
Hey!
We puke and we smoke
And we drink and we die
Hey!

Then we finished things off with Leary's "Thank you for calling. Thank you for calling" from the stand up portion of the album.

I can also thank Leary for keeping me off drugs. After blaming his bell bottoms and other poor judgments on weed I knew I should stay away from the stuff. As Leary once said "never do a drug named after your own (expletive deleted)." Plus I also learned from him at an early age that the bet drugs are the legal ones. I always look forwards to cold season so I can start taking NyQuil and sing "NyQuil, NyQuil, Nyquil, we love you, you giant (expletive deleted) Q." And I would never have learned about whippits had it not been for Leary. And thanks to his soliloquy on meat, I didn't eat a salad until about three years ago.

Even though he's best known for drugs and smoking, I think the best part of the album was when he went on his musical diatribe:

Explain it to me. Heavy Metal bands on trial because kids commit suicide? What's that about? Judas Priest on trial because "my kid bought the record, and listened to the lyrics ....." Well that's great! That sets a legal precedent. Does that mean I can sue Dan Folgerberg for making me into a (expletive deleted) in the mid-70's. Is that possible, huh? Huh?! "Your honor, between him and James Taylor, I didn't get a (expletive deleted) 'till I was 27 years old. I was in Colorado wearing hiking boots eating granola."

But thanks to the uber-depressing grunge music, I typically change it to Eddie Vedder and Kurt Cobain while in Seattle wearing flannels shirts and drinking cappuccinos to fit my experience. And whenever election time rolls around and I debate on whether I should vote I think of two things Joe (expletive deleted) Walsh.

So with St. Patrick's Day quickly approaching, stop by McDonalds, pick up a Shamrock Shake and throw on some Leary and sing along to the Traditional Irish Folk Song.

1 out of 5 stars Dennis Leary has a career because there's no cure for cancer..........2006-02-15

When I bought this album years ago I would have given it 5 stars, because I laughed my a## off.

Then yesterday I picked up "Relentless" by Bill Hicks, and I am furious. Huge portions of Leary's cd are ripped off almost word-for-word from Bill Hicks' material. I had heard the rumors that there were some similarities, but I liked Dennis Leary, and I didn't want to believe it. Now I wish I'd never bought No Cure for Cancer and contributed money in his direction.

If James Frey can be brow-beaten on national tv for making up elements of his memoir "A Million Little Pieces", Dennis Leary should have gotten similar treatment YEARS ago for being a dirty stinking thief.

Listen to the two comics side-by-side and its undeniable. The only reason Leary got away with it is that Bill Hicks died in 1994 of (how ironic!) CANCER.

Shameless.

Album Description

"His voice is from another world. Robbie is special" - Pete Townshend, 2006

Robbie Basho released Venus in Cancer in 1969 on the Blue Thumb label. After five albums for the Takoma label in the 60's, Basho had cemented his reputation alongside John Fahey and Leo Kottke as one of the most brilliant guitarists of his genera- tion. His wide range of musical influences from around the globe set him apart from other blues-based players, incorporat- ing Arabic, Himalayan and Indian themes; Japanese and Chinese scales, and classical and European folk music. All are on magnificent display on this sprawling, spiritually-charged album. Released on CD for the very first time, the album has been remastered from the original tapes. The package includes origi- nal album artwork and new appreciations from Windham Hill label founder Will Ackerman, Basho college friend and fellow Takoma recording artist Max Ochs, German guitarist Steffen Basho-Junghans, and Pete Townshend of The Who. Twenty years since his death in 1986, Basho's legend continues to grow, having strongly influenced a new generation of guitarists including Jack Rose, Ben Chasny (Six Organs of Admittance) and James Blackshaw, among many others. The first ever live recording by Robbie Basho, a version of "Kowaka D'Amour" from Venus in Cancer, can be found on Tompkins Square's recent compilation, Imaginational Anthem, Vol. 2.

5 out of 5 stars Worth the wait!.......2006-10-21

This music has taken a long time to reach CD. My old BLUE THUMB LP has long worn out, so I am delighted to welcome an old friend in CD format. In agreeing absolutely with Richard S Osborn, I would add that I have always thought KOWAKA D'AMOUR to be one of the finest guitar pieces I have ever heard. Add to that, the title track and CATHEDRALS... and you have perhaps the essence of Robbie Basho as a unique and wonderful guitarist. If you enjoy this music, you may want to explore the recordings of STEFFEN BASHO-JUNGHANS. I hope the good folk at Windham Hill will issue Basho's ART OF SIX AND TWELVE STRING GUITAR at some time.

5 out of 5 stars At long last!.......2006-09-10

I salute Tompkins Square for reissuing this album of Robbie's. If you have never heard this incredible visionary/musician, this album would not be a bad introduction. After hearing a guitarist so accomplished and unique in his technique and passionate in his vision, maybe, like me, you will wonder why there are not more successors to lift our souls through music....

The Fantasy reissues ("Guitar Soli" and "Bashovia") contained a compilation of Robbie's best early work ( "Soli") and later work ("Bashovia") on the Takoma label. "Bashovia" gathers most of the best works from Robbie's "Falconer's Arm" LP's; unfortunately, they left out "Variations on Shakespeare Wallah", one of Basho's best straight-ahead raga-style explorations. Robbie had studied with the incomparable Ali Akbar Khan for a couple of years, and the results really show in some of his raga-style work.

I studied with Robbie in the late 1960's and then performed with him a little in the early 1970's. Even today, I feel somewhat evangelical about wanting to promote his music: I don't feel he ever got the audience or recognition he deserved. In part, this was his own fault. He was fairly strange as a person, and had some severe faults as a musician. I say this last because of all of his later albums (except those mentioned), I would recommend ONLY this "Venus in Cancer" album, as containing music of the highest order. When I speak of musical faults, in Robbie's case, I fear the worst was his belief that he could write poetry and that the content of his songs was as important (or more) than the music itself. This single fact destroyed (in my opinion, of course) almost all of his later albums.... EXCEPT "Venus in Cancer". This album contains one of the most successful fusions of Robbie's astounding voice with his guitar playing in the song "Eagle Sails the Blue Diamond Water." Also, never to be forgotten is "Cathedrals Et Fleur De Lis", that magically weaves one into a vast tapestry played as on huge chimes. And (the exception proving the rule) his "Wine Song" is one of the few that are entirely successful as mystical devotional singing; you will notice that the imagery is constrained, kept under control: traditional Sufi imagery well handled.

If you can only buy one meditation for cancer, this is the one to purchase. It provides hope. It has positive images and is likely to reduce symptoms which are uncomfortable. The other Healing Power Meditations for Rehabilitation, and Cardiac Relaxation are excellent but for cancer recovey this is the best. It has been recommended to be used while experiencing chemo by patients who are dealing with this disease.

Buy this album !! Anybody who likes their punk rock fast , dirty and a bit heavier than the usual should find this album now . This comes on like Helmet if they'd listened to The Misfits instead of John Coltrane , and the guitarist is definitely the star of the show , peeling off killer riff after riff , song after song ! The rest of the band are no slouches either , and in a (un)pleasant change from the "we can play more complicated than you guys can" bands that are about , these guys just want to rock out !!!!! Can't really pick out a particular favourite cos every song is a winner .

Do yourself a favour and get this now !!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Cries of laughter beneath me.......................................2006-09-21

I am only rating this CD 5 stars because of the first track. It has to be one of best death metal songs ever. I saw these guys live in St. Louis with Demolition Hammer and Deicide. At the time I never heard of them. It's funny, for the longest time I thought their other CD "To the Gory End" was their up follow CD to this but it was actually the other way around. In contrast to all the reviews for the "gory end" that I have read I like that CD way better than this one. It may be a simple death metal format but it is simply bad-to-the-bone. This CD is ok, "Hung, Drawn and Quartered is one of my favorite death metal songs of all time but there is no possible way I would pay 40$ for this CD. I would recommend a file sharing site to see if you can download Hung and the song "back from the dead".

5 out of 5 stars AN EXCELLENT BRITISH DEATH METAL ALBUM!! FROM A VERY TALENTED BAND!!.......2006-08-23

I was recently going through some of My CD's and I came across this album: CANCER "DEATH SHALL RISE".It had been a very long time since I last heard this album so I decided to put the disc in and Crank up the volume and here is what I found:A fantastic Death Metal album that is really solid from start to finish. Produced by Scott Burns (CANNIBAL CORPSE and DEICIDE) this 2nd release from CANCER has an Excellent sound a very high production on the entire recording. The sound quality is absolutely crystal clear and not the least bit muddled. You can really hear each instument very well especially the drums and the double Bass pedals, and outside of the shredding guitars and vocals the Bass player can be heard very well too! With only 8 tracks this album seems to fly at a furious speed (but that is when the repeat button becomes extremely handy!!) CANCER as a Band overall have a tremendous amount of talent and if I could give an example of what they sound like it would most likely be a cross between the intricate writing, brutal vocals, and excellent solo's of: DEATH and the blinding precision and speed plus excellent "CRUNCH" rhythms of: the almighty SLAYER! Some of the major highlights from "DEATH SHALL RISE" are: track #1)"Hung, Drawn, and Quartered"(ABSOLUTELY BRUTAL LYRICS!), track #2)"Tasteless Incest"(Fantastic SLAYER style rhythms and My personal favorite track on the album!), track #4)"Death Shall Rise"(this track has a couple of really terrific guitar solos and some Jaw-Dropping double Bass work on the drums!! Great timing changes too!), track #7)"Corpse Fire", and track #8)"Internal Decay"(GREAT FINISHING TOUCH!).If You enjoy Your bands DARK,BRUTAL,AND REALLY HEAVY! then CANCER's "DEATH SHALL RISE" is an excellent album to add to Your collection!I also HIGHLY recommend this album if You enjoy listening to bands like: SLAYER,DEATH,CANNIBAL CORPSE,DEICIDE,and OBITUARY. I am really glad I took the time out to put this disc in and give it a listen! It's been a long time and I forgot what a great band CANCER was. I hope My review was helpful to You. Please check out My other reviews for more GREAT Thrash,Death, and Black Metal Bands!! LONG LIVE METAL FOREVER!!

5 out of 5 stars Old school death metal at it's best!!.......2005-12-02

I like "Death shall rise" slighty better than the "Gory end" and the other one. The John Walker's voice, in my opinion was one of the best voices in the genre on the early '90s and no talk about the genius James Murphy, you should hear the solo on "Hung, Drawn and Quartered" very melodic, and in "Back from the dead". Good album by an incredible band!!

5 out of 5 stars Kick ass! DEATH METAL.......2005-09-10

This is Death Metal at it's finest so far I've heard To the Gory End,Death Shall Rise, And Sins Of Mankind and just stumbled onto these guys a couple years ago I've been blown away ever since and they our back together again with a new cd for 05 "Spirit In Flames" check there website but it only in the UK right now maybe cdnow can help us out and get ahold of it

5 out of 5 stars BRUTAL SOPHMORE ASSUALT!!!!.......2004-12-10

Cnacer's 2nd album is one heavy mother. The production is much thicker and fuller sounding than the previous debut To the Gory End. The band continues on the same path they started with To the Gory End. The addition of James Murphy on lead guitar is definitely a plus! Check out his awesome solo in the first track "Hung Drawn and Quartered". This has to be THE best Death Metal song to bang your head through a wall. For me the best songs along with Hung Drawn are "Tasteless Incest" "Death Shall Rise" and "Back from the Dead". But really all 8 songs are killer. This album was a great follow up to the debut. Although the production on this album is better, I still prefer To the Gory End because I like the songwriting more. Most people seem to like Death Shall Rise the best. All 3 Cancer albums are awesome but if I had to pick, Id choose To the Gory End. Good news for Cancer fans! Their website says that in '05 the first 3 albums will be remastered/resissued w/ bonus tracks!!! Hell yes! If you dont like Cancer, you are missing out big time

5 out of 5 stars One of bluegrass music's top ten releases in 2006.......2006-12-25

Playing Time - 71:47 (CD#1); 68:37 (CD#2) -- It's easy to see how this 2-CD album has become one of bluegrass music's top ten releases in 2006. Drawing material recorded live at the 2000-2005 Musicians Against Childhood Cancer (MACC) Festival in Columbus, Ohio, the project was inspired by executive producer and musician Darrel Adkins. He and his wife Phyllis' beautiful 22-year-old daughter, Mandy, lost her battle to cancer (brain cell tumor) in 2000. The non-profit MACC was formed, and the festival was launched to raised funds for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tn. where treatment is dispensed for children with terminal illness. Volunteering to play the July festival, 136 artists are featured here. Most all of the big names in bluegrass are featured - Rhonda Vincent, Grascals, Keeny & Amanda Smith Band, Wildfire, Lost & Found, Larry Stephenson Band, Cherryholmes, Doyle Lawson, Tony Rice, J.D. Crowe, 3 Fox Drive, Marty Raybon, Blue Highway, Alecia Nugent, Lonesome River Band, Seldom Scene, and many more. Liner notes clearly lay out the pickers and singers on each song.

There are some entertaining pickup groups featured too. A 7-minute version of "Freeborn Man" features Dan Tyminski, Tony Rice, Bela Fleck, Doyle Lawson and Barry Bales. Of similar length, a bluegrass instrumental version of Gershwin's "Summertime" stars Bryan Sutton, David Talbot, Ashby Frank, Terry Smith, Aubrey Haynie and Randy Kohrs. Tony Rice introduces and dedicates his 11-minute solo and reflective rendition of "Shenandoah," with a declaration that "every musician is right here exactly where we are supposed to be doing this."

This album has a ton of first-rate and captivating variety from the bluegrass community, but I took special note of each and every song that conveyed sentiments that could be construed as tributes to the memory and inspiration of Mandy Adkins. Alan Bibey made a point of dedicating his own "Side by Side" to Mandy. As Kenny & Amanda Smith sing, "I know this love will last forever, I know where loves lives, someday we'll always be together, living in Him." Kudos to Jack Campitelli and Bob Kelley for a fine job of recording, mixing and mastering the 37-tracks of absorbing music without any significant audience applause or background noise. Mandy would be very gratified by the result, and bluegrass music and this festival will just grow even stronger. Why? In "The Healing Kind" written by himself and Greg Luck, Ronnie Bowman sings "the pain just grows stronger everyday, I think of you and I'm on my way, down memory lane with your hand in mine, `cuz I'm just not the healing kind." 5 out of 5 stars One fantastic CD set!.......2006-11-08

I bought this only because it won the IBMA Album of the Year award for 2006, and being a bluegrass musician,I thought it sounded like a pretty good lineup of music. Man oh man, was I ever right! This is one fantastic collection of musicians and songs! If you like bluegrass music at all, run--don't walk--and get this CD set!
