4 out of 5 stars The real arms around me just faded........2006-07-27

Let me first state that I am a Smiths fan in every sense of the word. I wore my Queen Is Dead shirt to school picture day, for God's sake! But this is my honestly analytical opinion on "Strangeways, Here We Come".
The person who got me into The Smiths was my dad, British junkie that he is, and when he found this CD buried in a little indie record store, he was overjoyed and mystified, saying that he'd completely forgotten about this album (hmmm, now what does that tell us). So, I copied it and commenced listening.

1. A Rush And A Push And The Land Is Ours
Probably the best song on the album, actually. With a mock-ghostly, dramatic beginning, blossoming into a catchy and (I wince to use this word, but I must) bouncy vocal preformance. 5/5 stars

2. I Started Something I Couldn't Finish
This song is either about homosexual rape or something beyond the realms of my understanding. And what's with the gutteral growling Morrissey's been toying with? This song actually has a really good beat. 3/5

3. Death of a Disco Dancer
This is an example of what came out of Morrissey's mind late one night after downing just a few too many. A strangely artificial beginning, dry lyrics, not my favorite song on the album. 3/5

4. Girlfriend In A Coma
This one I like, despite the very un-Smiths-like sound to it. Morrissey's characteristically grim humor abounds, if looking through another person's eyes (do you really think he has a GIRLfriend?). 4/5

5. Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before
A good title, if nothing else! But also a good vocal, good lyrics (when are they not?). But Moz, who is the "shy, bald Buddhist"? 4/5

6. Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me
This song made me cry the first time I heard it, but through my tears I couldn't help but wonder who the people were, screaming in apparent agony in the backround. Oh, but I love this song. "Last night I felt real arms around me. No hope, no harm, just another false alarm." How true. 5/5

7. Unhappy Birthday
Hilarious like a sledgehammer on your head! With a mock-cocky rhythm, and cheerfully hateful lyrics, I can't help liking this. 4/5

8. Paint A Vulgar Picture
A pretty good idea lyrically, but they carry it on a bit too long. A strong dosage of reality, but not done particularly well, I must say. Except for the "dance my legs down to the knees" bit. 3/5

9. Death At One's Elbow
Oh, Morrissey and Marr, WHY? It's upbeat to the point of painful, the lyrics make little sense, and dear God was that a tambourine??? Goodbye my love indeed. 1/5

10. I Won't Share You
In my father's words, "beautiful". Well, he was never much for analyzing, but indeed it is. An acoustic is always a good way to end an album. Written for Marr, possibly? 5/5

There you are. Rate me, hate me, bless me, help me (wait, who am I talking to) keep scrolling down your computer screen, I don't care. My overall take on Strangeways, Here We Come is 4/5 stars. Cheers.

2 out of 5 stars Worst Smiths Album Ever........2006-06-01

I think the only way you could really consider this a good album is if you are working BACKWARDS through their catalog. I remember as a teenager going to the record store and snatching up all the 12" singles they would release every other month it seemed back in 1984 and 1985. Each one was a gem, musical brilliance. Meat Is Murder is one of the finest pieces of British rock music produced, if not THE best in the 80's. Were it not for a few duds, I would say the same for The Queen is Dead. These are albums that to this day have not been matched in lyrical genius and musical expression.

Then you have this album. Now, I was quite a rabid fan back in the day - until I bought this album. I tried very very hard to like this album. But the dreadful, overproduced music coupled with Morrissey's obvious creative block made for some bad listening. I am thinking right now of the lyrics to "Stop Me.." and how bad they are. They actually make me cringe. Does repeating phrases 3 times in a row, 4 times in a song, compare to "Rusholme Ruffians"?

Like I said, if you are working backwards throught their catalog, you might think of this as a good album. But when I heard it, I knew it was over. I think this could only appeal to fans of Morrisseys solo stuff, which I really really can't stomach.

5 out of 5 stars Call them Genius and be done with it.......2006-03-09

We'll never see their like again in this lifetime. The Beatles of our generation. Pure pop perfection. The entire catalogue. That's the other thing to consider, the amount of material in so little time. Let's call them genius and be done with it.

5 out of 5 stars who cares if it's the worst album?.......2006-02-25

My impression is that the Smiths is one of those bands that has fans that love it/them so much that even their "worst" album is a deep pleasure. I could empathize with someone saying that about Strangeways, but there is still that magic that touches us, that makes us feel there music is more than music to us. I feel this way about R.E.M, up to a point (and I'm sure you know it's a point out of time), Elliott Smith, Radiohead. There are thankfully some recording artists out there who you can depend on never to release total, disappointing crap. The Smiths were one of those artists.

4 out of 5 stars Well, I'd trust the band members over anyone else..........2006-01-31

If it makes any difference, in the latest issue of Uncut, take 104, Marr states that the band always thought 'Strangeways' as their strongest record.

I personally think 'Meat is Murder' was best, but I remember listening to Strangeways very heavily in 1987, and having a complete feeling of sadness, because you knew it was over. Not because it was poor in any way, but because the mood of the record was so alone.

If it wasn't for the revolutionary artwork, it would be easy to suspect that the Chemical Brothers were parodying their roles as electronic musicians with that album title. After all, people have accused the genre of sounding redundant for years. But while contemporaries like the Prodigy and Fatboy Slim fall by the wayside, on their fifth studio album Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons sound positively reinvigorated, as the dreamy textures of 2002's Come With Us give way to a set of sharper, more focused songs, from the politically charged "Left Right" to the wide-screen "Close Your Eyes." It's epic stuff, particularly when A Tribe Called Quest rapper Q-Tip magically appears to give lead-off track "Galvanize" a vintage hip-hop kick. But because this is as much about the future as the past, the British duo also recruits Kele Okereke of underground punk-funk stars Bloc Party and the London vocal group The Magic Numbers to help push things forward. --Aidin Vaziri

5 out of 5 stars Musicians.......2007-05-18

I've been a Chemical Brothers fan ever since I heard "The Sunshine Underground" from a friend of mine. Really, that was the only song of theirs I owned and had every listened to until I got curious about the Budweiser Select commercial. After a quick google search, I was floored that the artists who wrote the song on the commercial that I was groovin' to were the Chemical Brothers, which led me to check out the CD and make the purchase as soon as possible. Note: the sample song previews on Amazon do not do the songs justice, the tracks on the CD soar above and beyond what any clip could provide. The Chemical Brothers' effort on this CD pays off with true works of art. They have such thick, lush layers of percussion creating something new to listen to almost every time you listen to a song while still relating everything to the pulsing bass which defines their music. The pieces on this CD are extremely busy in a very good way, and I have kept this CD within easy reach since I bought it half a year ago. These are genre-bending artists, and this CD is a wonderful purchase.

5 out of 5 stars All My People March.......2007-02-21

The urgent political message from Anwar Superstar on Left Right is the cornerstone to this ambitious project from The Chemical Brothers.

Galvanize is a classic merging of pop sensibilities with an infectious, signature rhythm. Boxer is pure 1970s funk, but the sonic overload of Come Inside & The Big Jump - the layers of sounds merge into a clubland tour-de-force - demonstrates how an ambitious electronic vision can be accomplished in the studio.

Believe & Hold Tight London pack solid grooves, while Surface To Air would arguably be the top choice on a CD not packed with so many solid cuts.

But it's Left Right that propels Push The Button. If you have any concern at all with the perverse drama of the world stage, the song will make you sit down & think. And that means The Chemical Brothers ultimately did push the right button.

3 out of 5 stars rather disappointing.......2007-01-03

I am rather disappointed by this album. I bought it, since I am a huge fan of "push the button" and its remixes and expected that the rest of the album was following the style.

5 out of 5 stars Their best work.......2006-10-24

I've listened to all their albums a million times, and this album has to be their best. Unlike most bands that lose their edge over time, this album is like throwing pine needles on the camp fire, because it is hot!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Chemical Brothers Album!.......2006-10-10

This was worth the wait. Their follow-up to the slammin' Come With Us, has that same Chemical Brothers' sound, without being formulaic or stale.
I've been a fan for years and am always pleased with their offerings.
I've turned some of my younger professors on to the Chems as music to code to. Launch your developer, pop in the CD, or launch iTunes and code on.
This has almost replaced Surrender as my favorite Chemical Brothers' album.

If the combination of veteran bluesman John Hammond with contemporary Philly hip-hop/soulman G Love (a.k.a. Garrett Dutton) sends shivers of fear down the spines of blues purists, the duo's collaboration here shows there is nothing to be worried about. Despite differences in age, backgrounds, and styles, they have shared bills and obviously respect each other's talents. Hammond, who has recently dipped his toes into songwriting waters after being solely an interpretive artist for nearly 40 years, jumps into the river with a whopping five originals. Love contributes a few as well, and the result is an album that rocks harder and with more intensity than most artists half Hammond's age can muster. Add covers from Little Walter, Junior Wells, and Tom Waits (Hammond's 2001 release Wicked Grin, comprised predominantly of Waits songs, is one of his biggest sellers), and the result is one of the finest and most diverse discs in the bluesman's bulging catalog. The stripped-down backing band of journeymen including bassist Marty Ballou, ex-Waits drummer Steven Hodges, and keyboardist Bruce Katz provides plenty of sparks with which Hammond--who plays rowdy guitar and sizzling harp throughout--can catch fire. Love adds his harmony vocals and rapping to his own "Tore Down," a near-perfect collision of blues and hip-hop and a song likely to get Hammond crossover acceptance with Dutton's more youthful jam-oriented audience. The jazzy "Eyes Behind Your Head" and a rollicking take on Dion's "If You Want to Rock and Roll" further expand Hammond's reach without either diluting his sound or distancing his core fans. In his mid-60s upon this album's release, he sounds loose, energized, and ready for another 40 years. --Hal Horowitz

Album Description

It's a precious few artists who reinvent themselves at the age of 64, but blues luminary John Hammond proves himself the ultimate untraditional traditionalist as the dozen stellar songs on Push Comes to Shove illustrate. Push Comes to Shove marks an increased output in Hammond's original compositions- he penned five of the CD's 12 songs- and there's a bold collaboration with the album's producer, G.Love (the innovative and soulful Philly singer/guitarist and longtime Hammond fanatic), in the hip-hop-tinged blues of "Tore Down", as well as a handful of personalized renderings of traditional blues numbers, a musical modus operandi that has earned Hammond multiple Grammy nominations since his 1962 self-titled debut. Since then, Hammond has made 31 records and tours year-round, learning from and playing with musical greats and friends including Tom Waits, Muddy Waters, and Michael Bloomfield. Those unparalleled experiences and authenticity shine through brightly on Push Comes to Shove.

I didn't realise John Hammond had a new release out. There I was standing in the blues section with a Muddy Waters double cd in my hand at a bargain price of 5 euros.I had 20 euros in my pocket.Just out of the corner of my eye I caught a glimpse of his new release.I bought it,"damn the expense i'll walk it home".It was worth every mile.Exellent cd.

5 out of 5 stars This Kills.......2007-06-13

I love John Hammond. Not only his instrumental skills but just his charisma as a performer. I think his delivery on this record matches the live performances I've seen him do, and that's saying something because he's great live!

5 out of 5 stars Never Better.......2007-05-16

I think that this is possibly John Hammonds best effort yet,
and I have been listening to him since the 60's. He does some
very different things on this CD, and also writes many of the songs.
It all works out very very well. Friends who are not John Hammond fans
have told me that they also enjoy it very much. A terrific CD.

5 out of 5 stars Nice man still rocks .......2007-05-14

i have no negatives about this cd.. It's good fun... It's not Muddy Waters etc... but that's a hill no one can climb..

Wonderful vocals... way high end guitar... And a fun sense of delivering blues lyrics.... I'm looking forward to seeing John and band on tour soon..

5 out of 5 stars The new mono???.......2007-04-01

I've admired John Hammond for almost 39 years now. I'm glad that he's back to using an electric band again. This recording is killer! I think the fact that it was recorded in analog as opposed to digital is what gives it the raw edge.If you like your blues gritty and downright real, you'll love "Push Comes To Shove". Can this analog recording be the new mono for the 21st century? Hope more artists record this way...it's warmer...or in this case...HOT!! This CD and John's recent output remind me of his early electric Vanguard and Atlantic recordings. This guy is an unheralded Americon icon.

It's difficult to separate Aerosmith from their glorious/inglorious history--one that's seen more revivals than West Side Story. For better or worse, the stalwart Boston quintet carry a load of preconceptions that are impossible to shake. Thus Just Push Play begs the question: If this 12-song set was the product of a bunch of upstarts, would it cause much of a commotion? The answer: Absolutely! Working with coproducers and song collaborators Marti Frederiksen and Mark Hudson, Aerosmith have forged an album that gracefully fuses '70s hard-rock grit with contemporary gloss. The pop-infused likes of the sweeping "Jaded" and the insistent "Sunshine" best demonstrate the formula that Tyler, Perry, and company have settled on for now, while gliding strings surge over Tyler's patented screech and the no-nonsense grind of the four instrumentalists. Mailed-in lyrics and a few self-conscious nods to the times mar Just Push Play, but the pleasures to be had here overwhelm the album's deficiencies. --Steven Stolder

4 out of 5 stars Aerosmith's "Pet Sounds", or "Sgt. Pepper", take your pick.......2007-04-26

There is a tendency in the music business to see just how far you can take a particular formula. For this album, and for Aerosmith, the answer is "all the way baby!". They truly left no stone unturned in an effort to inject their sound with every contemporary pop cliche' and idiom (funk, rap, eastern music, grunge, techno, etc.). The Beatles, by comparison, sought to distinguish themselves in the studio, beginning with the "Revolver" and "Rubber Soul" period, culminating with their magnum opus "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts' Club Band" (itself originally conceived as their answer to the Beach Boys' "Pet Sounds"). Once they determined that there was nowhere left to go from a production standpoint, they did a 180-degree turn and put out the "White Album", a back-to-basics, no-frills rock album which showcased the individual songwriting talents of the various band-members.

Aerosmith, being the classic rock band that they are, are treading a similar path in their evolution. And, they ended up coming to the same conclusion as the Beatles, which is that it's important not to lose touch with your roots-the original source of your inspiration and passion. Steven Tyler put it succinctly when he said "there's only so far you can take it (i.e. professional songwriters, multiple producers, pro tools) before you're just polishing a turd" to paraphrase. They have since revitalized and re-energized themselves by making a back-to-basics album filled with blues standards called "Honkin' On Bobo", which turned out to be the perfect antidote for those fans who were disenfranchised by the slick production of "Just Push Play".

With all of this being said, "Just Push Play" is alternately brilliant and cluttered. The disc bears repeated listening, because there are many, many great features buried in the mix. To suss them all out, play around with your equalizer, try it with and without headphones, and be sure to turn up the volume! You will find layer upon layer of vocal harmonies, strings, guitars and various types of "fairy dust" sprinkled throughout.

My only real criticism of the disc is simply that it has a somewhat linear quality to it, primarily due to the relentlessly high level of production on almost every track. There are some quality compositions here, and loads of personality (courtesy of Mr. Tyler), and quality musicianship is a given with this band. However, not every song deserves the "star treatment", and it would have been nice if they scaled back in some instances (just because you have 128 tracks doesn't mean you have to use every one of them!). Remember the old days when you had 2-3 radio-friendly singles, a couple of simple acoustic numbers, a ballad or two and some quirky B-sides for good measure?? You won't find that here. But it's still a solid 4-star effort from one of the best rock 'n' roll bands of all time. They've earned their place in rock history, and can do as they like at this point. Dry your tears classic rock fans!

4 out of 5 stars The Next Step.......2007-03-12

After the amazing Aerosmith release 'Nine Lives' which touched on some new directions,I (along with all their die hard fans) wondered where their music would go next...the answer was found with the release 'Just Push Play'
for reasons unknown, the radio stations did not push this as hard as the last several Aerosmith releases, which is a shame because this is a very good CD...I don't think it's quite as good as nine lives but they were taking some chances which takes guts...there are more then enough great songs on here to make anyone happy,I think part of the problem was the choice in which song to release as a single,'Jaded' is a great song but it is a little on the slow side,I think a much better choice for a first single would have been 'Just Push Play' or 'Outta Your Head' and then follow that up with the absolutely gorgeous song 'Luv Lies' (one of the best they've ever recorded) but that's just my opinion...I think the CD would have done a lot better if people knew that it rocked rather then hearing 'Jaded' and thinking the whole album might be softer music

beyond beautiful is typical Aerosmith (in my opinion a very good thing) great rocking tune to start off the CD

Just push play - is just an awesome song,it rocks and has some very clever lyrics, one of the best songs on the CD

jaded - is another beautiful song,a great tune that should have been released as a single but only after a few of the others

fly away from here - brilliant, great slow song, lots of feeling and emotion

trip hoppin - a little bit different feel,still a good song,but a bit of a departure

sunshine - great song, lots of thought went into this, has a very different feel from other stuff Aerosmith did,I like it

under my skin - not one of the best

luv lies - perfect! this song is so beautiful, should have been a huge hit
a slow song that is just amazing

outta your head - next to luv lies, this is my favorite song on the CD,it kicks some serious butt!!!,great rocking song with great cleaver lyrics

drop dead gorgeous - another example of a different kind of vibe,it's a gamble that I think paid off, this song is great,I love the lyrics

light inside - one of the weaker songs,it doesn't suck but it isn't up to the rest of the album

avant garden - a beautiful way to close the album...a nice soft song filled with emotion

the upside - more then enough great songs to make any music fan smile, the songs are catchy and well done, the highlights are 'luv lies' 'outta your head' 'just push play' 'fly away from here' and 'beyond beautiful' and 'jaded'

the downside - a few filler songs, and a bit experimental for those expecting the 'classic' aerosmith sound

the bottom line - I highly recommend this CD to all Aerosmith fans...the songs are great, the production is awesome,if you're new to the band, start with 'O Yeah' and 'Young Lust' but this and Nine Lives are definitely worth having in your collection...donutman says so!!!

2 out of 5 stars Stay away from this one!.......2007-02-27

This is NOT one of Aerosmiths better efforts. Even the radio track is only fair. The rest of this CD is very mediocre.

4 out of 5 stars More Of The Same.......2007-01-25

More of the same from Aeromsith. Another good quality disc, but nothing in particular that really stands out for me. The album had several big hit singles, "Jaded" and "Just Push Play" which I like. Overall the album has a bit more of a modern feel with samples, a little techno here and there, and Tyler occasionally rapping. Another solid, but unspectacular album.

5 out of 5 stars One of the hottest guitar solos I have ever heard.......2007-04-02

I recall first hearing Psh Push on the radio the day Duane Allman died. I wondered why the station was playing so many Allman Brother songs in a row. Then they played Push Push. The song began with a nice bluesy piano, bass and drums groove leading to the first flute solo by Herbie. His solo soared for a spell then came back to earth for a breather. Then Duane's guitar kicked in and I began to put this obscure record into context. The slide guitar took over and set a generous table for what was to come. Then Duane cut loose and pulled the tablecloth off. The work is some of his best, adding not just to his own body of work but pulling the best out of Herbie as well with the 'call and response' interplay that is a keynote of Jazz.

This was always one of my favorite songs. I went through three copies of the LP but never got around to buying it on CD until today. Just hearing the samples brought me back to those days.

5 out of 5 stars COOKS TO A SLOW BOIL.......2006-07-03

PUSH PUSH is a landmark of sorts in a number of ways. It came out shortly after the death of Duane Allman who, for all the fame that would follow, was a relatively unknown session player at the time. If other fan sites can be believed, it is fairly certain these sessions took place before the July release of THE ALLMAN BROTHERS AT THE FILLMORE EAST. Even then, it took several months for the live Fillmore album to simmer before most began to realize that the world had a classic rock album in hand. Whether you buy into the Brother Cult or not, no fair listener can ignore the black water and night whiskey grace Allman brings to Mann's search for a deep Southern flavor and root. Moreover, Mann was giving homage once again to the great soul music of the day.

As was typical of Mann, he only penned two compositions for this album. One being "Man's Hope" (record executives were fond of making countless puns on Herbie's last name for album titles) and the other being the eponymous "Push Push". It is on "Push Push" that the band actually comes together of one mind. It is the longest cut and in many ways sounds as if it could have gone on for a longer time to fully flesh out the spirit of the moment. "Push Push" is easily worth the purchase of the album. But the album goes on to the Marvin Gaye's transcendent "What's Going On" and Aretha Franklin's mysterious "Spirit In The Dark".

After "Man's Hope", the album takes a definite lighter tone. "If" was a rather sentimental and gentle ballad by a band called Bread. It was extremely popular at the time across a wide swath of the young and old and so was considered something of a piece of drivel by those who's tastes run more with the Stones, Santana and Humble Pie. Nevertheless, undoubtedly if you hated it you put yourself in a definite minority and chances are your girlfriend just loved it. No great revelations as Mann does it here; but it is quite nice and pleasant--true to the song's essential spirit,

Things pick up with "Never Can Say Goodbye" and "What'd I Say". This is an unusual pairing to say the least. As with "If" and the band Bread, "Never Can Say Goodbye" was made a hit by the Jackson Five--another "kiddie" band you wouldn't allow near your Led Zeppelin records. Still, the song had been done in a cooler fashion by Isaac Hayes just slightly earlier and time has proven the "Never Can Say Goodbye" has legs all its own as a song. Of a more respectable pedigree is "What'd I Say". Most rockers kneel to the ground and raised their arms in honor of the great Ray Charles and this is one of his signature songs. So the pairing of a piece of "fluff" with a holy hymn of soul music was unusual to say the least if not obnoxious.

But Herbie Mann was not a musical snob. He just believed in music and let it play--trying to bring out the very best in the nooks and crannies you would suspect were there. As with most Mann albums, if you check your prejudices at the door it all is delightful and makes sense.

"Funky Nassau" is added as a bonus track to the CD edition typically because it came out of these same sessions. "Funky Nassau" had been available before in compilation albums and so is not a "gift" in the sense of something new. In an event, much like "Push Push", that cooks up to a slow boil with satisfying results.

This album stands on its music all by itself and deserves a higher reputation than it currently has. Its problem is twofold. The first being it is very much an artifact of its time. In 1971 the new openness toward sexually and the "New Morality" was just hitting full steam. The "New Morality" mostly consisted of unfettered carnal intercourse between men and women. The distinction between a gentleman and a horndog was blurred. The difference between a nice girl and a [insert your own gutter language here] became ill-defined and seemed to follow some sort of sliding scale. The "New Morality" celebrated the wonders of the joy of sex which did not necessarily have a permanent commitment involved--sex with no commitment at all to be stone honest--all courteously of THE PILL. (It would be a good ten years before AIDS would rear its ugly head.) Thus the overt suggestiveness of the title PUSH PUSH. In case you didn't get it the first time, on the inner sleeve of the album was a definite but spare drawing of a couple copulating. There on the cover of the album for all to see was a bare-chested Mann hefting his flute--well...I suppose you don't have to subscribe to Freud to get THAT.

It caused quite a stir at the time--somewhat like Clark Gable saying "Damn" in GONE WITH THE WIND--But nowadays we regard it as quite tame and dismissing the music all with the same hand. Not fair and not right.

Along with its notoriety, Playboy magazine embraced this Herbie (Hugh Hefner) Mann like a long lost child and pushed the album as the hip among hip. Thus we have something of the "Playboy Curse". Jazz fans who mainline their Coltrane and Davis directly into their veins quickly pronounced that anything so popular and championed by such a phoney sophisticated periodical cannot be worthy of serious attention much less admiration. And, of course, there is nothing so "un-hip" and last year's "hip".

Thus to the outer darkness Herbie Mann went. Years later, when Mann was sick unto death, only then was it recognized what a generous and genuine musician he was. Still, after all these years, a little condensation hangs around this album like newly poured asphalt on a city street on the bottom of your shoe.

This may not rank as Mann's best album; but it is certainly is one of the most pleasing and entertaining.

3 out of 5 stars When Push, Push comes to Shove.......2006-03-15

Following Herbie's "Underground" LP on Atlantic, Push, Push was highly anticipated. When it came out it was along the same lines as his last, and was neither a failure or a commercial success. After that in the late 60's/ 70's the feel for Jazz blues, feel off as well as his sales.

5 out of 5 stars Herbie Mann, Push Push.......2005-06-23

I'm not usually a big fan of Herbie Mann. My first introductions to him were Glory of Love, and London Underground. Glory of Love had some nice melodies and subtle arrangements, but maybe if it wasn't a flute playing the lead melody, it would be better. But, over all, it was just very boring.

As for London Underground, this was very much Jazz-Rock, but it was more 75% rock, 25% jazz. I don't know, the flute sound isn't "full" enough for that kind of energy.

After these listening experiences, my aunt got me Herbie Mann at the Village Gate, which seemed uterly boring.

But.....with this album, a total different story. This is great fusion, jazz-rock, contemporary jazz, whatever you want to call it. This is that classic cover. (not one of the most sexiest covers of all time)

The musician appearences make this album even more enoyable. With this album, I'll sure check out some more 1970's Herbie Mann recordings. Herbie done good with this one!

4 out of 5 stars pop goes the jazz.......2004-11-16

This is the only jazz disc currently in my collection, and despite the fact that Herbie Mann is definitely a jazz artist, some would dispute categorizing this as a jazz album. There are no vocals on the tracks, but the presence of Duane Allman, plus the heavy Top 40 song selection, and the fairly straight forward arrangements all tilt the disc more toward pop than jazz. Be forwarned if you're a Duane Allman fan seeking some of his trademark southern blues slide guitar: this is a Herbie Mann recording where the instrumentalists for the most part serve as a soapbox for Mann's flute excursions. Only one song, the title track, give Duane significant room to move.

'Push Push' was released in 1971, directly on the heels of some of the most celebrated songs appearing in the collection. In March and April of that year Marvin Gaye took 'What's Going On' to number two on the national charts, The Jackson Five took 'Never Can Say Goodbye' to number two, and Bread took 'If' to number four. The other charting song is Ray Charles 1959 number six classic, 'What'd I Say'. The disc also offers two Mann compositions, the title track and 'Man's Hope', as well as a bonus track not appearing on the original vinyl, the Grammy winning 'Funky Nassau', which was penned by Bahamian songwriter Dr. Offff Fitzgerald and his cousin, Raphael Munnings. Aretha Franklin rounds out the songwriting, contributing 'Spirit In the Dark'. There is absolutely nothing to complain about in these selections; each is a stunner, with Mann's own work holding up well among the more highly touted commercial successes.

The session musicians employed by Mann have references that read like a who's who among the era's most accomplished artists. David Spinoza, whose credits include stints with Paul McCartney and Paul Simon, gives Allman a break, offering a lead guitar solo on 'Man's Hope'. Ralph McDonald, who supports Bernie Purdie and Al Jackson Jr.'s drums with percussion accompaniment has backed David Bowie and Jimmy Buffett. And Donald 'Duck' Dunn, who earned a space in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as an MG for Booker T. Jones, has aksi played behind The Blues Brothers and Neil Young. Chuck Rainey also plays bass, and he has performed with Steely Dan and The Eagles. Allman himself has added his talents to recordings by John Hammond, Wilson Pickett, Boz Scaggs, Eric Clapton, and Aretha Franklin. How's that for name dropping?

The music itself is an homage to sensuality. The album title and photographs accompanying the disc speak to Mann's desire to create a soundtrack for lovemaking. He succeeds to some degree, but rather than coming off as a celebration of sensuality, the album feels more traditionally romantic, especially the ballads 'If' and 'Never Can Say Goodbye'. The title track and 'Man's Hope' are the funkiest songs on the disc, and seem to produce the most inspired and imaginative response in the performers.

I owned the original vinyl version of 'Push Push' while in college, and was also fortunate enough to catch Mann when he made a summer of 1975 appearance at the Pine Knob Music Theatre in Clarkston, Michigan. It was an unusual show as Mann's back-up band, The Family of Mann, got delayed at the airport, and Mann decided to perform the first set solo. I was only sitting a few rows from the stage, and I'll never forget the mesmerizing performance this Mann put on. I was close enough to be able to hear him keeping time by tapping his foot on the stage, and it was all the rhythm accompaniment he needed. He is truly a master of his instrument.

While 'Push Push' doesn't, in my opinion, capture Herbie Mann at his best, the song selection and musical stylings probably make it his most accessible work. I'm not sure if the disc is remastered, but since it was released in 1989, I'm doubtful. Scanning the disc and inserts fail to reveal whether it is AAD, ADD or DDD. It does say "reissue produced by Bob Porter", which sounds like a remastering. Go figure. Credits and a few comments by Mann are the only other offerings found in the inserts.

In many ways this collection, which compiles each of the band's out of print EPs from 1997-2001, is all the "greatest hits" you'll need by the Scottish combo. It's easy to take Belle and Sebastian for granted these days--they don't sound as good as they used to, and certainly it's difficult to imagine them ever becoming as culturally/musically relevant as they were once upon a precious, fey little time. But this collection brings the listener back to a time when it was crucially important to find their import EPs, when no one else in the world seemed to be making indie-pop that was so full of sincerity and irony at the same time, nor as gorgeously crammed with orchestral elements and naughty-smart lyrics. "The State I Am In" has never sounded better, while "Lazy Line Painter Jane," which expanded their sound to include C&W-ish elements, is clearly one of the band's best tunes ever (and perhaps a more interesting direction than the vaguely soulful one they took later on). The almost-rolliciking, smartypants "Le Pastie De La Bourgeoise" is brutal and elegant. -Mike McGonigal

Album Description

At long last, all seven of Belle And Sebastian's "Jeepster" EPs have been collected into a convenient 2-CD set. Often considered their best work, and previously only available as hard-to-find imports or in a box set, the EPs, consisting of 25 songs recorded from 1996-2001, are now available for the price of a single frontline CD. The four tracks from the EP "This Is Just A Modern Rock Song" have never been released in the US before. Also available in a deluxe 3-LP gatefold vinyl set and a deluxe double CD hardbound book.

belle and sebastian are amazing, and this is probably the best 2 disc collection of songs you could ever hear. buy this. it will quickly become your favorite thing to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars Great collection.......2007-04-11

This singles collection is done right and priced right. It's the most listened to B&S record I own. You see, I WORK for a living and the band's singles go for too much money. It's nice to get 'em all in one!

5 out of 5 stars One excellent EP after another on 2 CDs.......2006-05-28

From the outset, it looked as though this collection gathering all of Belle and Sebastian's various EPs released in the late 90's and early 2000's was a very...very good idea. Considering that the EPs themselves are insanely difficult to find, having them all here on this portable chronological collection is great. Belle and Sebastian has always been a very good singles band (rivaling The Smiths) and the songs on their EPs are just as good if not sometimes better than what appears on their proper albums. This album is so definitive of Belle and Sebastian's sound, that one can introduce themselves to the lonely and most inflective of the bunch tendencies of Stuart Murdock's world without hearing a single song on one of their albums. Everything that defines Belle and Sebastian can be found on the songs here. From self deprecation to sheer vanity and the affecting melodies and the images they evoke, their songs are an emotional journey that an exceptionally few number of bands can replicate.

This compilation along with their first three albums is essential listening for Belle and Sebastian admirers and for those who are merely curious..... five stars.

(If you love this then check out The Beta Bands 3EP's LP (1999) ...which is also excellent)

5 out of 5 stars So Fine.......2006-03-07

They should be more famous if songs quality influence something!
If you like for example St Etienne this is your favourite too.
There is not much about the band in the booklet.
Very good purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding - one of the best Pushstars albums yet!.......2006-08-06

I've been following the Pushstars for almost 10 years now, and I can honestly say that "Paint the Town" is one of the best albums the band has produced. The number of upbeat, energetic tunes ("In the Galaxy," "Lucky Sevens," and "Keg on my Coffin") balances nicely with some quieter ballads ("Outside of a Dream," "At Sea"). As always, Chris Trapper's lyrics complement catchy melodies without compromising on intelligence or meaning. Each song is a story that carries you along with it. Another great addition to a fine body of music from one of Boston's best original bands!

5 out of 5 stars What a great album.......2005-07-22

I bought about 1000 cd's in my life so far and this is one of a few cd's that I can play, from the beginning to the end, without skipping any track.
Awesome, the Push Stars got me hooked forever.

5 out of 5 stars Most underrated band in the world!.......2005-02-19

Push Stars is the best band in this genre of music. Their music is done with such a passion that is hard to believe they are not in the mainstream. But you know what? I even prefer that way. Not that I don't want them to make money and be more successful, that's out of me. It's just that if any of the songs off any of their albums get airplay, it will be overplayed and that tends to make it dislikable eventually. That's the worst thing that can happen to a band.

About "Paint the town", here goes my review:

1) Claire: Awesome start, a somewhat dark song, but a perfect beginning. (5/5)
2) Outside of a dream: A mellow song, with heartfelt lyrics. The chorus is simply perfect! (5/5)
3) In the galaxy: An underrated song, but for me it's one of the best in the album. Chris' voice is really passionate in this one (5/5)
4) Lucky sevens: Catchy sound with a catchy chorus. Very good work in here (5/5)
5) Every angel : Again another flawless work (5/5)
6) Freedom: my least fav in the album, but still a very honest song with very good lyrics (5/5)
7) Paint the town: Another of my favs, this catchy tune will hook you up from the beginning. Funny and cheerful song (5/5)
8) Hanging by a thread: Sad and mellow song, yet one of my favs. Once more, the chorus is the standout here (5/5)
9) At sea: this song grows on you as you listen to it over and over. There's an instrumental part in the middle of it that just blows my mind! (5/5)
10) Dream came down: the faster song in the album, it's similar to Meltaway from their previous work. Very singable and even danceable, this sound will cheer you up, believe me. One of the best! (5/5)
11) Keg on my coffin: Similar to In the galaxy and Freedom, except that this one has fantastic lyrics. The thing about this song is the lyric, very clever and very true. (5/5)
12) Drifting away: A different and unique sound, it has much of the brazilian style called bossa-nova (I'm brazilian, by the way). I personally like it a lot, it's a good close to an amazing album, one of his best efforts to date. (5/5)

Strongly recommended! Also, try their 3 previous albums and their E.P. called tonight, they're all top notch, as well as this one!

4 out of 5 stars hootie (if they were good).......2005-02-01

i'm normally not a fan of 4/4 rock like this. there is nothing edgy or out of the ordinary about push stars. frankly, they would fall in the same category as huey lewis or hootie & the blowfish... EXCEPT... they write such great songs. my take on music is that a great song is a great song, be it rock, jazz, rap, country, etc... lyrically, even, there is nothing really revealing or special... but those songs stick like a juju bee in your filling. they defy all my expectations of what a "typical" bar band can do... don't expect new revelations. expect what 1000's of bands have done before, just done better.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible from start to glorious finish.........2004-07-29

Bouncy rock and roll meets a seemingly endless supply of positive energy and soul in this album. Here are some guys who know how to rock. They need to get more popular so they can spread their music further into the mainstream, thus loosening mediocre music's grip on our world. Mediocre this album is not.
With tracks like "Outside of a Dream", "Lucky Sevens" and "Dream Came Down" you will have these lyrics memorized in record time. These guys are what the future of music needs to be: they're fun, and they put on one hell of a live show. I saw them open for Great Big Sea in Philadelphia this past spring, and they held their own marvelously. After a week with this album in your discman you'll be listening to it from start to finish again and again. Listen to the wailing, synthesized opening of "Lucky Sevens" and you get chills. The optimistic, cheerful and drunken lyrics of "Keg on my Coffin" can make anyone smile.
Insanely addictive and almost suspiciously talented, you need this album.

Drifting in like Sunday morning drizzle, Push The Heart is a record that often sounds afraid to wake anybody up. The fourth full-length from LA's Devics continues the gentle flow of 2003's The Stars At Saint Andrea, but expands and softens the arrangements as guitarist/keyboardist Dustin O'Halloran goes for a Mazzy Star-like intimacy. Not that there hasn't always been a little Hope Sandoval in vocalist Sara Lov's lilting and lovely alto, but Devics miss Mazzy's nocturnal, psychedelic edge. The record's best moments come when O'Halloran and Lov decide it's OK to raise a small ruckus and combine drawn-out phrasing with some rhythmic momentum. "Distant Radio" makes wonderful use of Lov's tone, and recalls some of The Sundays' wistful bliss, while "A Secret Message To You" features a cute typewriter click for tempo and atmosphere. But too often, songs leave compelling ideas dangling around the edges. "Salty Seas" mines a Cat Power vibe, but can't match Chan Marshall's emotional highwire kick. O'Halloran jumps in on vocals for "If We Cannot See" but his flat delivery is too close in the mix and blunts the song's dynamic range. Devics were obviously after a looser, subdued feel here, but a few targeted doses of passion and contrast would have made for something less somnambulistic and more quietly dramatic. --Matthew Cooke

4 out of 5 stars one of the best albums yet from the group.......2006-03-19

Over the course of the past decade, the duo (and sometimes more) of Devics have released four full-length albums, a handfull of EPs, and several limited singles. The core of the group has always been singer Sarah Lov and multi-instrumentalist Dustin O'Halloran, and after making Los Angeles their home for many years, the two moved to Italy for some time after being signed with the UK label Bella Union. After making a name for themselves across the Atlantic with lots of shows in different countries, the duo returned back to California to record Push The Heart, their fifth full album.

I've heard a great deal of work from the group, and my favorite release is the excellent and well-rounded My Beautiful Sinking Ship, which seemed more cohesive and musically solid than their other efforts (their only Italian recorded release, The Stars at Saint Andrea, seemed a bit hit-or-miss to me). While it might feel a bit on the safe side for some fans of the group, Push The Heart is easily the most developed batch of songs from the group, easing through ten assured tracks of soft orchestral pop.

"Lie To Me" opens the album on a solid step as ethereal mellotron and moogs swirl around a guitar and piano driven instrumentation while Lov adds multi-tracked breathy vocals that take the track into appropriately otherworldly territory. "A Secret Message To You" strips things back a bit with found-sound typewriter percussion, accordion, upright bass, cello, and some more tickled ivories from O'Halloran while Lov's vocals get the old-timey tin-can filter treatment (an effective trick they manage to pull off about once per album).

From there, the album settles into a more standard sound, with a string of more lushly-produced tracks, of which any could probably find some radio play in the right places. "Song For A Sleeping Girl" finds O'Halloran doing an admirable job with lead vocal duties over some slick mid-tempo instrumentation while "Distant Radio" seems to channel The Sundays with soaring vocal melodies and chiming guitars. The group veers away from completely safe routes, though, and just about the time you think "If We Cannot See" is going all drippy ballad, the duo builds up a solid crescendo and rains down some gorgeous shimmering guitar textures. With any luck, this album should propel the long-running group into the consciousness of even more listeners.

5 out of 5 stars Finally H&O Come Good Albeit Just for 1 Album!.......2005-11-12

Having been a H&O fan for decades and having heard all their studio albums I'll have to say that I felt really betrayed by the Arista years. The only albums that were worse than "Ooh Yeah" and "Change of Season" were "Whole Oates" and "War Babies." It got so bad that for the first time, I'd actually hesitated to buy a H&O album without first hearing it. Fortunately, I decided to take a risk for old-time's sake and got this album. This album is a vast improvement and comes closest to the "Big Bam Boom" and earlier days in terms of quality tracks and musicianship. This could do with a remastering job though although the sound quality isn't all that bad. My favourite tracks here are "Time Won't Pass Me By", "Hold On to Yourself" and "War of Words" and the tracks from 7 onwards run very cohesively together. Sadly this was a false dawn as the next album "Do it For Love" falls short yet again. However, this album is highly recommended as one of H&O's better works harking back to the good ole RCA days. Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Hall & Oates' last album of the 20th Century.......2005-04-22

Daryl Hall and John Oates returned to the public ear in 1997 after the minor success of CHANGE OF SEASON,released seven years earlier. Hall and Oates were dropped from Arista Records after COS,which was only their second Arista album(the first was 1988's OOH YEAH). The duo's relationship with Arista was very much sour, not like their five-year relationship with RCA and their eight-year relationship with Atlantic. H&O gained the most attention during their RCA era from 1980 to '84. Here on this album,on a new label called Push,is the only Top 10 hit,PROMISE AIN'T ENOUGH. I also like THROW THE ROSES AWAY. Fans even noticed that Oates got rid of the moustache he sported for twenty-something years.

5 out of 5 stars STRONG SINGING STRONG SONGS STRONG SOUL.......2004-05-10

One of only two albums Hall & Oates released in the 1990's, Marigold Sky is one unbelievably good record. It is a shame that more of those who bought Hall & Oates records in the seventies and eighties didn't pick up this one. Contemporary Adult radio did make "Promise Ain't Enough" a minor hit and it is a good song. But "War Of Words" is easily its equal. I remember hearing "War Of Words" a few times on the radio here is the Midwest; however, it did not draw the attention it deserves.

What makes this an exceptional Hall & Oates record is that Marigold Sky is a return to the "blue-eyed soul" reminiscent of the style of Motown artists such as Smokey Robinson. Indeed, in listening to "Out Of The Blue" and "The Sky Is Falling" it is easy to believe these songs were directly lifted from Smokey's late sixties catalogue.

"The Sky Is Falling" is the best song on the CD. A close second is the eponymous "Marigold Sky" itself. "Marigold Sky" meshes easily with the rest of the "soul" material but it is isn't a "soul" song itself. Driven at first by deftly picked acoustic guitar the chorus shifts into a breezy twelve string electric guitar strumming that rides like the wind all while Daryl Hall sings of a love long gone but still alive.

With Marigold Sky Hall & Oates keep to eternal "soul" themes of love discovered, love troubled and love lost. This is a deeply satisfying CD and it is sad that while Hall & Oates had fallen off the popular hits radar they did not make more albums like it. Indeed, since their intensely hot career of the seventies and eighties Hall & Oates have issued only two other albums since 1990's Season Of Change. Of those one was a VH-1 "Behind The Music" collection. I don't fault those who stick mainly to the well-beaten path of popular music because a good deal of enjoyment of music is its communal aspect. There is something heartwarming about sharing music a whole lot of other people love and enjoy. You don't get that if you choose music that only a few thousand in the whole country know about. But maybe there should be a place in your collection for an eccentric but well made record you just like to listen to. I count Marigold Sky as one of my guilty pleasures.

4 out of 5 stars This is a great album.......2003-07-23

Every now and then something surprises you and this was it for me. This is a great album. Its a mature adult album for the music lovers out there who love great tunes, stories and musicianship. Well worth the purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Sara Smiles Again.......2003-04-12

The dynamic non-stop pop machine from the late 70's (Wait For Me) to the 80's (Out Of Touch) takes a well deserved break after playing with their (now, sadly deceased) boyhood heroes, David Ruffin & Eddie Kendricks. After some other sad deaths (their close friend Sara of Sara Smiles, Daryl Hall's marriage to Sara's sister and John's racecar collection), the guys regrouped to record the best piece of work since the aforementioned achingly beautiful early 70's ballad. All the "Private Eyes" had grown up, and this album was quickly dismissed as more of the same 80's pop that same group of boomers had grown up with. How unfortunate because "Marigold Sky" was a trip to future and past. It wasn't commercial drivel, not that the band ever REALLY delivered pablum, they just kept making silly love songs and, after all: "what's wrong with that?" Marigold Sky was too easily dismissed as we all can look back with 20/20 vision. The band had changed back into a serious contender for generating mature albums which were as good from start as they were to finish. "Promise Ain't Enough" received minimal airplay and the album quickly sank into oblivion. Albeit, some wise listeners did partake of this new Marigold laden sauce and discovered the secret known today. This is a freaking great record! Arguably, Marigold Sky, is the best thing ever done by the musical brothers who brought the new sound to Philadelpia (TNSOP?) Today, Marigold Sky is getting posthumous props to the point of it being a seriously hard to find recording. It sounds as fresh today as it did a decade ago. Sara approves fellas. She's smiling in Heaven right now. By the way, I'm back at the gig you did in Baton Rouge to support "Voices" and I have my lighter making a big flame. I want some more of this Marigold stuff! Get G.E. and T-Bone and "get back to where you once belonged."

5 out of 5 stars Critics Suck..This band Rocks !.......1999-02-04

This band is an all american down home rock band. They use a great formula: Gibson guitars, loud amps, and raspy vocals. What more could you ask for. The guy that wrote that review is probably gay !
