Editorial Reviews
Richard Banks, Christmasreviews.com, 2004
"Songs of Christmas is delicious new Christmas pop! Gushometer off the scale on this one."

Darren Frei, In Magazine LA, Dec 2003
"With a dash of humor and a heaping dose of humanity, Craig Richey delivers a truly unexpected gift."

Album Description
This beautiful new Christmas concept CD is a collection of soulful, eclectic originals that truly reflect the warmth and spirit of the holiday season. From the liner notes: 'The songs reflect my feelings about christmas: a time of love, wonder, wistfulness, and a deep connection to the past, in this life and others. I have been intrigued by its opposing and haunting landscapes: snowy fields and desert sands and how alike they look under a starlit sky.' The album features stunning vocal performances by Richey and other band members, perfectly blended and layered with rich, intriguing harmonies; both acoustic and ambient electric guitars; and Craig's tasty, understated piano playing. Take refuge in this rare treat!

Put together by Abba's own Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, Mamma Mia! manages to cram over 20 of the Swedish supergroup's songs into a threadbare plot. It goes a little like this: Young Sophie is getting married and she's trying to identify which of three men is her father. That's about it. Wisely, the musical doesn't mess around with the songs, save for the insertion of some dialogue or for having some of them performed by a man (it works amazingly well). Abba fans will jump on this import of the London production, but traditional fans of musical theater should consider it as well. After all, Andersson and Ulvaeus's songs have always felt as if they were more than isolated pop gems and actually belonged to a longer narrative. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

I have not stopped playing this cd. It is just great! It makes any trip in my car most enjoyable Happy I bought it!

5 out of 5 stars Mamma Mia Musical CD.......2007-03-21

This is a grand list of songs from the original musical when it was first introduced in England. The songs from ABBA are very recognizable even if you haven't seen the show. But, making a trip to NY to see the Broadway production is a plus. ENJOY!

4 out of 5 stars JUST GREAT MUSIC.......2007-03-08

I RECENTLY SAW THE SHOW MAMMA MIA IN LAS VEGAS. ALWAYS LIKES THE MUSIC OF ABBA, AND THOUGH THE PLOT WAS THIN, THE MUSIC WAS WELL PERFORMED. IN THIS PARTICULAR ALBUM, THE ENGLISH ACCENTS WERE A BIT MUCH, BUT THE SONGS WERE GREAT. ALL I CAN SAY IS THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC, ABBA.

5 out of 5 stars Mamma Mia.......2007-01-29

Every time I hear the music and songs it brings back memories of seeing the Broadway Show

1 out of 5 stars Not good at all.......2007-01-09

This is not what we wanted. The British accents throw it was off. We just saw it in NY and this is not what we were looking for.

Every track on this CD contains a beautiful melody, many of them easily recognizable, all of them exuding tranquility. "O mio babbino caro" from Puccini's Gianni Schicchi opens the disc, with Bell delicately accompanied by a harp and spinning the long melody with great sensitivity. Bellini's "Casta diva" from Norma lives up to its reputation as the epitome of bel canto in Bell's hands; his violin sings. The middle movement of Mozart's 21st Piano Concerto takes well to the violin, and Debussy's "The Girl with the Flaxen Hair" is played with great warmth and sensuality. It would be easy to turn a recital like this into treacle, but Bell is wise enough to realize that the music is already sweet enough and he plays with great reserve and a minimum of sentimental slides. The light accompaniments always support, with woodwinds prominent but used with grace. This CD, in short, is a beauty: a fine gift, a lovely mood setter. --Robert Levine

4 out of 5 stars Romance of the Violin.......2007-07-16

While it's not my very favorite Joshua Bell CD, this is a pleasure to listen to!

4 out of 5 stars End of the Day.......2007-06-08

I am a Joshua Bell fan, and this album is the one that I enjoy with my dessert, it calms me at the end of the day, and makes me think of my 6 year old granddaughter's visit. She has to have music on during meals at her home. Usually it is some kid stuff, but I do not have anything like she has at home, so I chose to play Joshua Bell during our dinner. When I placed the dessert before her, she looked up at me and said: "This music is so beautiful, I want to play the violin just like that". What more could I say.
He is inspiring, and she is right. This album is beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2007-05-30

I play this for my grandson to nap by. It is so relaxing and wonderful!

5 out of 5 stars Over and over and over...........2007-05-17

That's how I want to play this CD! It's a wonderful line-up of rich, mellow, captivating compositions played with a warmth and vibrancy that is seldom heard. Joshua at his very best. You won't be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Non-standard CD format.......2007-04-22

The music on this CD deserves five stars, but the CD itself is a non-standard format that doesn't work on all players. There's a tiny warning on the back of the CD. You won't notice the warning until you discover that the CD doesn't work on your player. My Macintosh computer wouldn't read the non-standard format so there was no way for me to listen in my office or put the music on my iPod.

A friend's PC was able to read the CD and make a copy in standard format that can be read on any player, including my Mac. The story had a happy ending, but I can not comprehend why the publisher chose the oddball CD specification.

The music is excellent and worth the trouble of making a copy, but the publisher really shouldn't make you go to that effort just to listen to a CD that you paid for.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2007-06-26

I bought this CD to listen to at work (I am 6 months pregnant). The quality is awesome and the choice of songs is perfect I can listen to it over and over.

5 out of 5 stars Great for putting kids to sleep!.......2007-06-08

I absolutely love this CD! In fact this is our second one because we wore out the first since we played it so much. It is very soothing, and in fact we used it to help both our kids (now 4 and 18 mo) go to sleep since they were babies. I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars Very Relaxing.......2007-04-10

It is very soothing and really helps you relax. I enjoy listening to it in the car during my high stress commute.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have for all Parents of Little Children !!!.......2006-11-25

I bought this when my first baby was...well, a baby. That was 8 years ago. Now I am on my 4th copy of this cd (Mozart For Mothers to Be) and my 3rd child. Nothing works better. I'm on here to buy my 4th copy becasue I've worn them out over the years and have to keep replaceing them. My 8 and 3 year old still use it, and now the new baby, also. Make it part of your nightly bed time routine and you'll have good little sleepers in no time. I swear by it. It is very soothing, calming and not distracting so it won't drive you bonkers if you can hear it a little from the next room.

A truely great gift for new parents, or if you have a sleepless little one at home. Turn on the cd, turn down the lights and let it sooth them to sleep.

4 out of 5 stars Inspire the baby-within.......2005-12-13

Beyond sheer musical appreciation and enjoyment, Mozart's music in general is ideal for gently stimulating the "creative centers" as well as instilling a sense well-being. While there is much academic disagreement about the extent or reality of the so-called "Mozart Effect," it doesn't take a genius to observe how Mozart's music puts most people (and probably babies-to-be) in a happy mood ready to take on the day's challenges. There is a simplicity - yet elegance and musical brilliance - in his music that is also well-suited for the youngest of children.

The selections on this CD are all excellent and represent a nice range of Mozart's compostions, emphasising those that are ideal for creating a pleasant backdrop for leisure, dining and social occasions ("divertimentos"). The recordings are from the creme of musicians famous for their Mozart. Few works are as elegant and soaring as the Serenade #10 for winds - an astonishingly beautiful tune made famous from the early scenes of the movie, "Amadeus." Mozart supreme gifts of music are even seen in such humble "background music" as these pieces. And such continuity of warm, leisurely tones as these over 70 minutes is ideal for inspiring the baby to-be if that is why you are considering this CD. Better to expose a baby to the gentile, lyrical music of Mozart than to the dissonant, loud and disturbing tones of some classical music written well after Mozart.

As the reviewer below rightfully notes, compilation CD's of various unrelated works like this one is not quite how classical music is best meant to be heard. But in a way it is better for many to start with such collections like this - especially for those who just want the more quiet selections that are unintrusive. In that respect, this collection can be satisfying for most anyone (not just moms or babies). I have a huge classical music collection, but still really enjoy listening to one full CD of similar-temperament music like this one that flows easily and smoothly that doesn't demand my attention but only seeks to delight. And, in the end, that was the simple and primary goal of many of Mozart's compositions - to be purely enjoyed and delighted.

In the grand, color-bending tradition of psychedelic experimentalism, Pink Floyd's Atom Heart Mother takes as its title an inscrutable phrase and under the title launches a similarly inscrutable--or at least dense--musical concatenation. The title suite features French-horn-led brass melodies riffed on by David Gilmour's guitar and the rhythm section, all of which veers into choral passages that recall György Ligeti's vocal works and then almost atonal pulses of keyboards that mask reams of audio snippets swirling underneath. And then there's some moody folk from Roger Waters, an almost Kinks-ish rambler from Richard Wright, then more moody folk (this time from Gilmour) on "Fat Old Sun," and, to close, the spirited melodic runaround of "Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast." There's a range of emotion here, from doleful to crazed to humorous (especially the dramatized comments on macrobiotics in the closer). Atom Heart Mother was a spotlight ahead for Pink Floyd, showing the extensions of form the band would engage in so successfully on Dark Side of the Moon just a few short years later. --Andrew Bartlett

Found it strange at first, then fell in love when I keep on listening.

3 out of 5 stars Famous more for the cover than the music.......2007-03-24

The cover has been listed on a lot of "favorite" lists.

They had also done a PBS concert following the release of this album which you may be able to find online that's worth checking out.

The title track isn't "Echoes" but is better than some of the studio side of "Ummagumma". "Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast" is an exercise in ambient sound.

2 songs from this era, "Embryo" and "Biding My Time" weren't included but there's enough room on the CD for it to go on.

I think that if you're into groups like Can, you can hear what may have influenced "Tago Mago", and it is definitely a transition album for Pink Floyd that without this, "Meddle" and "Obscured by Clouds" wouldn't have been made, which in turn would help develop "Dark Side of the Moon".

4 out of 5 stars An Obscure, Yet Classic Floyd Album.......2007-03-21

Contrary to popular belief amongst all of those classic rock fans who've been educated by their local classic rock station, Pink Floyd existed before the release of their 1973 album "Dark Side of the Moon." A band that had made a huge transition from the psychedelic tendencies of the brilliant, yet drug addicted Syd Barrett, much of the early years of Pink Floyd were spent bumbling around in the dark, trying to find the sound that would put them on the right track.

I, for one, respect the hell out of these years for the Floyd. They were rewarded for their persistence and experimental nature which helped create their sound. Atom Heart Mother is one particular case of this happening.

This album is highly degraded by the band themselves nowadays... David Gilmour has stated on a couple of occasions his disgust for this record, and other members of the band have as well. Drummer Nick Mason's criticism of the album is much more restrained than the others, as he has noted that many of the elements, such as the long instrumentations and styles later found in DSoTM and Wish You Were Here, were first started with this album.

The name of the album came from a headline in a British newspaper which told of a news story about a pregnant woman who had recieved an atomic pacemaker. The cover of the album, a cow in the English countryside, was a specific request from the band to designer Storm Thorgerson to provide them something that would deflect from the overall theme of the album, which would allow them to be more creative with their music. Thorgerson went for a drive, and shot the first mundane thing he saw, a cow standing in a pasture.

Here is the list of tracks:

1. Atom Heart Mother Suite (23:44) (Waters, Gilmour, Wright, Mason, Geesin)
2. If (4:31) (Waters)
3. Summer '68 (5:29) (Wright)
4. Fat Old Sun (5:24) (Gilmour)
5. Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast (13:00) (Waters, Gilmour, Wright, Mason)

The opening track, on the vinyl version of this album, took up all of the first side. A very experimental and long track, composer Ron Geesin, an aquaintence of Roger Waters, was brought in with a full orchestra backdrop to add to the song. The track is somewhat dragging, definately sprawling, and a little pretentious, but it's not hard to recognize the talent in the piece. Gilmour's guitar was solid throughout the composition, and while not really leading to any place in particular, the Suite definately keeps you engaged throughout, and is an impressive, if not somewhat confusing track.

The middle tracks are individual songwriting contributions from the band. Waters' "If" is a folky, somewhat mocking ballad. Wright's "Summer '68" seems to me to be a mix of The Kinks and The Beatles, taking elements of both and rolling it into one. Of the solo compositions in the album, I enjoyed this one the most, as well as the fact that it's probably the strongest of the three in it's presentation. Gilmour's "Fat Old Sun" is a nostalgic song of the days of youth. He'd hit this theme later on as well, at the end of the Floyd's run with the song "High Hopes" from The Division Bell. The songwriting of Fat Old Sun is very personal, but weak in comparison with later Floyd compositions. The end guitar solo is quite good, existing also a sign of things to come.

The final track "Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast" continues where Atom Heart Mother Suite leaves off, throwing caution to conventional music. The song, complete with background noises of Pink Floyd roadie Alan Stiles preparing and eating his breakfast, is broken into three musical parts. The music itself is quite good, but a tad underwhelming. The last part of the song, titled "Morning Glory" is the strongest part of the song, and brings the album to a strong close.

Overall, one cannot fully understand a musical act until they expose themselves to the humble beginnings. Pink Floyd rose meteorically to their stardom... they once found themselves trying new things, and creating a formula for success. It's important, especially in the Floyd's case, not to ignore the importance of the first few albums.

Atom Heart Mother maybe chided as the worst Pink Floyd album by a few. But it's not. It's not their best either. It's one of my favorite, and one of their most important albums, as it really got the ball rolling in their evolution from psychedelic to progressive themes of rock.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Pre- Dark side Listen.......2007-03-18

Ever since I was 6 or so (35 yrs ago) I have been just mesmerised, musically in love.....with Pink Floyd. I find "Atom Heart Mother" definitive of the modern Floyd sound as much as any in the early era. I like the well composed yet seemingly randomised sequences on the long side( long tune on CD) and the diversity of musical forms shown within. I see it as a harbinger of the future for them as it has some very good songs thatsadly, not many know. I got it in 1976 on album and later , as all things, digital in the eighties. i have learned on piano and guitar most of it, as is fun to play , not hard , yet entertaining.

Itis a must for the budding PF fan. Waters inluences give us a hint of textures he can only provide and Gilmore seems to be at ease with his new surroundings .....Buy it , you wont regret it, man.

5 out of 5 stars Atom Heart Mother is both typical and atypical Floyd..........2007-03-14

I think the Wikipedia page on Atom Heart Mother says all that needs to be said about this fine classic Floyd album. Either you like it or you don't. I'd go as far as to say that if you really like Pink Floyd, I mean *REALLY* like Pink Floyd, then you'll probably enjoy this album. If all you know of Floyd is Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall, you will probably find this experimental album a bit strange and maybe even painful to hear.

Product Description

A trio of noted Australian musicians--Iva Davies, Richard Tognetti and Christopher Gordon--composed the film's score. They previously collaborated on "The Ghost of Time," a piece commissioned for the Millennium celebrations in Sydney, which came to the attention of Peter Weir. The director was so impressed, he played the piece on the Master And Commander set throughout production, and he asked its creators to write the music for his movie. The score interweaves "Old World" and "New World" music, reflecting the talents and backgrounds of its composers. Iva Davies hails from both pop and classical traditions; Richard Tognetti, one of the world's great violin virtuosos, taught Russell Crowe the ins and outs of the instrument; and film/television composer Christopher Gordon brought orchestral texture to the project. Given the period, it comes as no surprise that the score is infused with source music from Bach (Cello Suite) and Mozart, among other great classical composers. Percussion dominates portions of the score. "Drums signal the forward movement of the ship," says Davies, "that it's on a mission. It brings you back into the action." The score's biggest surprise comes with its use of synthesizers. "Peter doesn't make films in the expected way," says Davies, "and for that reason we wanted the score to be not what everyone expected. Peter wanted some scenes to have what I call a kind of 'futuristic' sense"--conveying the idea that these 19th century sailors were cutting-edge explorers.

5 out of 5 stars Marvelous.......2007-02-12

A marvelous collection of compositions which greatly enhanced this fantastic film. This CD is marvelous on its own. It did not leave my CD player for weeks.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good.......2006-12-14

I purchased this soundtrack because I really enjoyed this music while watching the movie. But I was a little disappointed at the CD. Some soundtracks allow you to follow the entire plot like through the music (such as the Pirates of the Caribbean soundtrack). But this CD doesn't provide that. Several of the songs are recurring in the film but are only played once in the soundtrack. I would have liked the soundtrack to reflect the music for the whole film rather than just excerpts.

I give the music 5 stars and the CD 2-1/2 stars.

5 out of 5 stars the music .......2006-11-10

The music is excellent . Flows well Better than the movie score

3 out of 5 stars Good incidental music but not great listening music - except the classical pieces.......2006-11-09

The soundtrack for Master and Commander contains two distinct types of music. First there is the incidental music for the film. These pieces are heavy on the bass side of the orchestra and are often emphasized with bass drums and tympani. This music is very effective and appropriate for the scenes in the film, and I commend the composers for making a soundtrack that so seemlessly and effortlessly invokes the moods and excitement of the visuals. Unfortunately, these pieces are quite moody and slow moving - great as incidental music but not so interesting to listen to as straight orchestral music.

The second type of music is much more enjoyable to listen to. Those that have seen the film know there are several scenes in which people are playing music - for example, Aubrey and Maturin in the captain's cabin performing a cello-violin duet, or the sailors on deck playing sea shanties on tin whistles. The pieces chosen for the film range from Bach to traditional folk music, and are a welcome addition to the soundtrack. The performances are very good (including a cello solo by Yo Yo Ma), and the recording quality is excellent. Deserving special mention is the Boccherini piece (La Musica Notturna Delle Strada di Madrid), which serves as a second unofficial theme song for the movie. The piece itself is presented in its entirety, and there is a callback to the piece in the incidental music as well, which is a welcome ray of levity in an otherwise oppressive piece.

People purchasing this disc run the real risk of being disappointed - the incidental music works so well in the context of the film that you are likely to think (as I did) that the music is itself worth listening to alone. Unfortunately, I don't find this is the case, but the classical music that is included makes this a soundtrack worth having, especially for the Boccherini piece.

3 out of 5 stars Great classical music accompanies bland original score.......2006-09-27

The original music to this film is dull, repetitive, and only offers the hint of good music at certain points during it's lengthy tracks. But what about all the good music you heard in the film? That was all classical music, which was used in the film incredibly well. There are three tracks in particular that save this album. The piece by Corelli is used as something the captain and doctor play together. It is one of the most beautiful pieces of baroque music of which I am aware. A second piece, Vaughn Williams "Fantasia" is the piece heard when the crewmen have to cut the line that might save their friend who fell overboard. It's a tragic scene and accompanied perfectly by the heart-breakingly glorious piece. The original piece of music is quite a bit longer than the version on the CD, but the original version also tends to drag a little in places. All the best parts are on the version of the piece in the film. The third classical piece from the album that saves it is the cello solo by Bach that plays as a theme for the galapagos islands. This solo is performed perfectly by Yo Yo Ma. These tracks make the album worth purchasing. If you already have them, avoid the album because the rest is not very enjoyable. If you wonder about this one, watch the film and listen for the music. It speaks well for itself in the film.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction to Spanish Classical Guitar Music.......2005-09-18

As a sampler, this CD is an excellent introduction both to Spanish classical guitar music and to guitarist John Williams.
The music ranges from Renaissance composers (Sanz, Mudarra) and harmonized folk melodies to standard 20th Century works (Rodrigo, Torroba etc).

John Williams is excellent throughout. The CD is also cheap, and can be used either just for enjoyment, or further to explore other recordings by Williams, the classical guitar repertoire, or other classical guitarists.

As a marketing ploy, it is very effective.

For the collector or classical guitar enthusiast, the chief disadvantages of the CD are duplication of other recordings, and that the way at least some of the works on this CD are listed isn't helpful in telling the listener the set(s) to which these pieces belong and how to find them (e.g. "from ______, Op # "). The font listing the titles and track numbers is small and somewhat hard to read.

However, this CD should attract many listeners and enthusiasts both to the classical guitar, the repertoire, and guitarist John Williams - and I'm all for that.

Over 70 minutes playing time.

Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars The guitar is an orchestra in miniature!.......2005-02-05

This admirable concept belongs to Hector Berlioz and it must not be a surprise the best guitarrists in the story have in common this trademark.

John Williams has always known the delicate equilibrium between the expresiveness and the glamouer. His impresive technique however is not exposed as his prima edonna. He goes directly to the soul of the composer, melts in his spirit and let the music sharp the qith eloquent conviction the composer's demanded atmosphere.

From Granados to Albeniz, from Rodrigo to Agustin Barrios - El indio Mangore -, from Moreno Torroba to Ponce , you will find the warmth, the passion and the Midas touch of this golden guitarrist.

5 out of 5 stars GUITAR MAJESTY.......2004-12-21

John Williams is a true Guitar virtuoso. His repetoire is very extensive and I use his music in my office while I work at my daily office duties. This album is a must for all guitar enthusiasts old or young.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet, sweet music, an essential addition to your collection.......2004-12-07

I originally bought this album three years ago, looking for a good introduction to Spanish guitar music. And this one fits that need perfectly. I still listen to and enjoy it today. I play this for guests at happy hour or dinner for a relaxed atmosphere. At Amazon's current price, this is a great value.

5 out of 5 stars A True Classic.......2004-01-26

This album/cd is extraordinary. All the songs are gorgeous and exciting to listen to. John Williams' interpretation and technique are perfect. After 22 years of listening to it, I still enjoy and appreciate it more every time. I love giving it as a gift.

4 out of 5 stars A Personal Favorite---BUT..........2007-05-05

...THIS SEMI IS COPY PROTECTED. To get around the copy protection don't install the utility program. It won't play in Media Player, but you can use other programs to do everything. This is very similar to Nightwish's Century Child. The band weaves numerous classical chord structures throughout the disc. The band is very talented and they really do push the limits here. The selections range from Ice Queen to In Perfect Harmony which almost sounds like Kenny Loggins' Return To Pooh Corner. Personally, I don't care for the last 2 bonus cuts, but otherwise this is a very compelling release.

3 out of 5 stars Okay........2007-03-02

Not WT's best by any means, but at least this album has personality unlike "The Silent Force". Theres a few good songs such as "Our Farewell", "Ice Queen", "Mother Earth" and "Caged". But the rest of the CD does not follow. "Perfect Harmony" sounds like a pre-school, sing-along song, and "Never-Ending Story" sounds like a folk song gone horribly wrong. All in all, the album isn't terrible...but it isnt the best.

5 out of 5 stars "Mother Earth".......2007-01-31

This is an excellent album. If you are a fan of "metal only" this is probably not for you. It is fully orchistrated and highly theatrical. The musical quality is fabulous. This is a theme album that will strongly appeal to affectations other than Christian. It's hard to put this group into a catagory. Theatrical Goth Metal is the closest I can come to a description. I personally love this CD and feel it is a very strong addition to my collection of Heavy Metal that I've been buying since 1964.

5 out of 5 stars Remarkable Discovery.......2007-01-04

My wife has been after me to buy this for what must be two years now, since she heard the title track on the Matt Drudge Show. I bought it as a slightly late birthday present, and she has listened to it at least three times. Wonderful stuff.

2 out of 5 stars what is this junk?.......2006-11-10

I'll give you the bottom line up front. Sharon den Adel, the lead vocalist, while very talented is not not suited for this type of work. She is blatantly flat or sharp at varying aspects of Within Temptation's songs including "Mother Earth." They do not even have very catchy riffs. Don't buy their album. If you like metal buy metal. If you like emo...kill yourself. If you want to be rocked, either make your own music or find something that does not suck on the surface as well as below it.

Album Description

Songs For The Inner Child is a collection of chants and lullabies, both traditional and contemporary, sung with the gentle voice of a loving mother. The songs are healing and soothing for listeners of all ages, carrying powerful messages of affirmation and comfort. Over 200,000 copies have been sold worldwide.

With Shaina Noll on lead and harmony vocals, New Age keyboard artist Jim Oliver produced and contributed instrumentally to many of the tracks. Rusty Crutcher, best known for his "Sacred Sites" series of albums, plays saxophone on "Deep Peace". Shaina's husband, Richard, contributes harmony vocals and recorder tracks.

Songwriters Cris Williamson, Libby Roderick, Susan McCullen and Bill Douglas are among those whose songs are featured on the album along with Shaina's composition, "Peace Be With You".

Lyrics include:

"How could anyone ever tell you you were anything less than beautiful...how could anyone ever tell you you were less than whole...how could anyone fail to notice that your loving is a miracle...how deeply you're connected to my soul..."

"You can relax now...you are the child of God, and that will never change"

"Peace be with you, oh my dear one...peace be with you, precious child...angels hover all about you, they protect you, night and day...angels over all about you, they will guide you on your way..."

"Deep peace of the running wave to you, deep peace of the flowing air to you, deep peace of the gentle night to you, moon and stars pour their healing light on you..."

5 out of 5 stars How did you know Shaina?.......2007-05-12

I was injured a year ago and have had two surgeries and months of physical therapy. As well as physical healing, I have been working on spiritual enlightenment. This CD spoke to me immediately and it was as though I knew the words before she even spoke them. I use the music as an affirmation of who I am, where I have been, and where I am going. One of her lovely songs simply states " How can anyone ever tell you you were anything less than beautiful?" What a beautiful affirmation of your value and worth as a precious child of our Creator. Awesome!

5 out of 5 stars Song For the Inner Child.......2007-04-02

If your self-image has taken a hit lately or if your life has been full of stress lately, this album of beautiful, soothing uplifting music was meant for you. It will refresh you and validate you.

5 out of 5 stars Comforting, Healing.......2007-03-09

I first heard the first song on this CD in a psychology class. A number of us sat there and wept.

I use this CD for myself and with clients in the healing work I do. I find it comforting in hard times, the things my Inner Child needed to hear when she was young, but didn't.

I am grateful this CD exists.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully healing message.......2007-01-10

This beautiful CD is ideal both for children and adults who will benefit from its soothing message of their specialness. I especially recommend it for those who have experienced a difficult or painful childhood and are in need of healing. Let Shaina Noll's lovely voice and the beautiful lyrics of these songs sink into your psyche. She sings a message we all need to hear and embrace.

5 out of 5 stars Affirmations for the soul.......2006-11-12

The words to these songs could be imagined as coming from a precious parent, from a trusted friend who has boundaries, or from ones Higher Power. The mellow music and the affirming words reached my soul.

Amazon.com essential recording

The Chili Peppers finally hit their stride with Mother's Milk, for the first time making their breakneck mix of funk, rap, and metal smooth enough to attract the masses, while keeping it raw enough not to alienate old fans. They've straddled that edge ever since. It didn't hurt that they offered a pretty mainstream cover of Stevie Wonder's "Higher Ground" to introduce the album. That single though, and the rest of Mother's Milk (including "Knock Me Down" and the randy "Sexy Mexican Maid") is pure Pepper--from Anthony Kiedis's in-your-face vocals to Flea's chattering bass. Milk was also guitarist John Frusciante's debut with the group and he shines, especially on Jimi Hendrix's "Fire." --Michael Ruby

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars GREAT CD!.......2006-11-02

Frusciante really earned his sock stripe here! This kid is A MAZ ING! 19? And plays this well! John played his tail off on Mom's Milk! Chad really proved his skin skills here also. Funk, Rock, Punk all making the dough of this band! Flea and Swan? What Else needs to be said about them! Does Anybody wants some MAGIC JOHNSON!

4 out of 5 stars Good Time Boys.......2006-07-26

This is the album that introduced me to the Red Hot Chili Peppers. And I can tell you, it totally blew me away! From the album cover, to its mix of punk, funk, rap and rock, to four guys dancing around the stage in their underwear, it was like nothing I'd seen or ever heard before. Along with Blood Sugar Sex Magik, this was to define who I am today.I grew up listening to songs on this record, and today, 16 years later, they still mean as much to me as they did back then.
This was the bands first commercial success, and of course the introduction of John Frusciante and Chad Smith. Only John could have filled the void left behind by Hillel Slovack, and it is clear on this album Hillel was one of his biggest influences. I doubt the Red Hot Chili Peppers would have ever tasted the success they have, had it not been for John, as he brings something more to the band.
And then of course there's Chad, who hits the drums harder than anybody. Flea's bassline lays the foundation, you can feel all of his energy being poured into the making of this record, while Anthony has a couple of his best lyrical efforts on here. (Knock me down, Taste The Pain).
While this album may not be as good as the ones that followed, (with the exception of 'One Hot Minute', of course) it is certainly a good aquisition for anybody who jumped on the post 'blood sugar' bandwagon.
A couple of songs on here (Stone Cold Bush & Johnny,Kick A Hole In The Sky) will leave you breathless, while a couple (Magic Johnson & Nobody Weird Like Me) could have easily been left off the album and not missed.
Overall, a very good effort nonetheless...It definitely set the stage for what was to come.

5 out of 5 stars The Chili Peppers at their meanest.......2006-07-02

In 1989, the newly reformed Red Hot Chili Peppers rose from the crippling tragic death of band-founding guitarist and longtime friend Hillel Slovak to release Mother's Milk, the first album to feature guitar wizard John Frusciante and drum demon Chad Smith. The result was their first taste of commercial success, a muscular, metallic fusion of funk, rap and rock.

1. Good Time Boys: Flea's funky slap-bass line opens this track, which then explodes into a powerful blast of hard rock. This track is an explosive anthem about the Chilis themselves, as "they don't believe in age" and "make a sad man happy". It's clear; the Chilis are back from the brink, and are taking no prisoners.

2. Higher Ground: An incredible tribute to Stevie Wonder, this is a pulse-pounding song that will dance around in your head for a while.

3. Subway To Venus: The manic funk never stops. The track features some wildly funky insturmentals, including an over-the-top trumpet by Flea. As Anthony puts it, this song will "make you dance, or make you **** your pants". The song also features a mind-blowing insturmental attack, which will make you "bust into your funkiest stroll", or have a heart attack.

4. Magic Johnson: Truely bizarre. A tribute to Anthony and Flea's favorite team the LA Lakers, the Chilis unleash a manic chant-rap that will have you bouncing off the walls.

5. Nobody Wierd Like Me: This song about Flea is a masterpiece of mayhem. The track is dominated by a pulsing, surging breakneck attack of adrenlin-fueled hard rock that will set your brain on fire. You'll also be wondering by the end of the song, "how does Flea play on this track without his fingers falling off?"

6. Knock Me Down: A slightly-slower paced song than the mayhem before, but instead a more introspective rocker about Hillel Slovak and drug addiction. The chorus steals the show here, with some beautiful backing vocals along with the song's unexpectedly touching and true-to-life lyrics.

7. Taste The Pain: The Chilis reveal an unexpected dark side on this track, with morose lyrics and chilling insturmentals. The chorus is a true knockout, with John's demented wail complimenting Anthony's pain-filled lyrics.

8. Stone Cold Bush: The hard funk steals the show once again, with surging insturmentals and naughty lyrics that are sure to turn some heads. There's also an insturmental solo that has some certain "sound effects" in the background (which I'll leave to your imigination) that will put a dirty grin on your face.

9. Fire: This two-minute song is completely insane. The Chilis reveal the manic energy that first got them attention (and notoriety) in their early days with this track. They also go completely insane in the middle of the song, in a sudden and hair-raising burst of energy.

10. Pretty Little Ditty: After the all the mayhem, sexiness, and tales of addiction, it's time for something completely different. This track is a beatiful and atmospheric jam between John and Flea, that will cool you off a bit (and give you a chance to change your soiled shorts).

11. Sexy Mexican Maid: A slower track than the others, a jazzy tale about a sexy Mexican maid. The erotic lyrics really make the song all the more memorable.

12. Johnny Kick A Hole In The Sky: An unexpectedly epic track with lyrics about Native American plight. The heavy, funky insturmentals are in their top form on this track, with a knockout chorus that features some amazing backing vocals.

Sure, you've read this review and many others like it, but what good is it that you haven't purchased this album yet? Don't spare another second until you have this album and the other works of the Chilis in your hands.

5 out of 5 stars need i comment? .......2006-06-22

i think i convey the feelings of millions of fans around the world that this has too be one of the best damn albums the chili and the music business has released..man it's so funky i want to shake my booty to flea's bass lines alone let alone john frusicante's guitar riffs..and MR anthony kiedis's hillarous and some heart hitting lyrics..[plus chad smith's agressive beats]
and the cover of stevie wonder's classic "higher ground" was an excellent choice for the chili's as they put their own warped funky punk twist..

this also features the other single "knock me down"

also on "Pretty little ditty" that riff i know i've heard that riff before and few years ago.. in a one hit wonders "crazytown" "butterfly" i've heard that tom petty is sueing the chili's for usually an riff on their classic new single "dani california"from one of his old songs well i hope the chili's sued crazytown for the use of that beautiful riff..

final summary the chili's have made classic albums over the past 25 year either with hillel slovack john frusicante and the vasely underrated album with dave navarro..

the chili's certainly know in an clinched saying "bring the funk up"

4 out of 5 stars Editorial error.......2006-06-07

The amazon.com editorial review states "Milk was also guitarist John Frusciante's debut with the group and he shines, especially on Jimi Hendrix's "Fire." --Michael Ruby"

Frusciante does indeed shine, but not on "Fire" - that track features their previous guitarist, Hillel Slovack. Read the liner notes, Michael.

This compilation of music by Dvorak played by Yo-Yo Ma is just beautiful. Ma seems to understand just when Dvorak wants to be super-Romantic and sappy and when he is in fact being merely his usual expressive self. The former comes into bloom with the Slavonic Dance, in which he's accompanied by Itzhak Perlman and "Songs My Mother Taught Me," with Patricia Zander at the piano. But when it comes to revealing Dvorak as one of the most insightful and truly passionate of composers, with a particular understanding of the cello, Ma's playing of the B minor Concerto (under Kurt Masur, with the New York Philharmonic), the latter description comes into play. Ma gets every nuance out of the cello, and the way in which Masur, for instance, leads the winds against the cello at the start of the 2nd movement is just gorgeous. "Klid" ("Silent Woods") is given a deeply affecting reading as well, under Seiji Ozawa. 2004 is the 100th anniversary of Dvorak's death; this CD is fine tribute. --Robert Levine

5 out of 5 stars Yo-Yo Ma is a genius .......2004-11-16

words fail me on how to describe performance in this CD.It's very good, one of the best interpretations I have heard in a very long time. I must confess that since i discovered Ma du Pre I have not been able to listen to anything else nor did I attempt to do so. But out of the blue I bumped into this CD by chance & after hearing Yo Yo Ma's phraising especially the 1st movement infact the whole of Dvorak Cello was like something new to me.Ma plays with passion, emotions & strong commitment to the music in a different way.The Ochestra is in top form & allows the solo cello to shine at the right time.I never thought there is another interpretation that could surpass M.Rostropovich(Im sorry to say this I know he is a living legend & the 1969 record with Karajan is held in high esteem). Ma is accompanied by my favourate violinist Itzhak Perlman on "Humosresque no.7 for piano" & "Slavonic Dance no.10 in E minor"- the results are so sweet as many people know Perlman is a romantic specialist his tone with Ma's cello is heavenly. With regard to the "songs my mother taught me" the cello sounds good not best for the track personally im so used to hear the song being played on violin. There's nothing wrong with the cello it's just that it 's tone is a bit too strong for the composition but it's very well interpreted by Ma. They call this transcription in musical terms. Actually Ma deserves an apology as im one of those who have accused him of lacking in emotions &"look at me now i can play anything" attitude.I think those allegations are baseless & unwarranted when u hear this CD u will know u are into something beautiful. Overall grab this very fast before many people realise Yo-Yo Ma 's greatest gift of song.
