Love in Color

About the Artist
A first-generation Cuban-American raised in a middle-class suburb in Phoenix, Arizona; Alek Vila brings the experience of struggling to fit in while choosing the path less traveled.

Alek's musical career began in 1986 upon acquiring a home synthesizer and forming his first band. After several years of writing and performing in various garage bands, Alek put aside his musical aspirations to attend the University of Arizona in Tucson, where he studied a second fascination-- the art and science of making films.

Never willing to let go of music completely, Alek worked as a film composer and sound designer throughout and after college. He moved to Los Angeles in 1997, where his artistic talents and strong work ethic were utilized in many different areas, including graphic design and art direction. Alek's path lead him to the gates of 20th Century Fox, to work behind the scenes as a graphic designer in the Art Department of the hit TV series "The X-Files". Soon, Alek found himself facing a fork in the road-- to choose music or film?

In the summer of 1999 (during the hiatus between season six and seven of the "X-Files"), Alek recorded his debut album "Love in Color". Returning to the show in the fall of 1999, Alek began work on his final year in the film business. Now as the seventh television season comes to a close, Alek is preparing a full-scale promotional launch of his new release and gearing up for a new career.

The German countertenor Andreas Scholl takes risks on his latest CD, Wayfaring Stranger, and not all of them pay off. It is a recording of 17 English-language folksongs, some of them very well known, such as "Down by the Salley Gardens" and "My love is like a red, red rose." This is not usually a repertory tackled by classically trained singers, who can sound prissy, but Scholl's clear, plaintive alto, with its rich low notes and gentle top range, is a quite plausible vehicle. "Wild Mountain Thyme" evokes real sadness, while "Barbara Allen" aches with unhappy love. A surprise awaits in the ballad "Henry Martin," as Scholl uses his rough, nondescript baritone to identify the hero. It is rather a jolt. At least, it is good to know his voice has actually broken. In this song, too-feminine endings in the lyric fall clumsily on stressed beats. Scholl does nothing to counter the infelicity; English, of course, is not his mother tongue. In the beautiful title track, which opens the disc, he sings endearingly of a "why-farring straincher." The accompaniments for various combinations of chamber orchestra, lute, dulcimer, and harp tend to be slushy, sentimental, and over-fussy. The bass uncomfortably parallels the tune in "Salley Gardens" and would have won a big red line through it in old-fashioned harmony classes. Still, on the whole, this is a worthwhile disc. Scholl clearly loves the songs he sings with great tenderness, and he deserves credit for his courage even where the experiment fails. --Rick Jones

5 out of 5 stars Beauty.......2006-05-12

This is one of the most beautiful CDs I know: so pure in tone, so haunting in its harmonies. The reservations of some other listeners seem to make this quality a sort of fault, and perhaps it is if you like your ballads gritty; but I find the selections, the arrangements, and Scholl's singing so ravishing that I felt I had to write this review just to urge everyone to try it. Listen to "I Will Give My Love ..." You might feel your heart stop.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful. .......2006-03-14

This is the perfect CD to listen to one a cold winter's afternoon with a warm cup of tea and a good book. Scholl's voice is so pure and smoothing. The orchestral arrangements are very creative and lush - sort of an English version of Canteloube's Chants d'Auvergne. The one down note I would have is eventhough Scholl's voice is very expressive his phrasing can be a little square. I would have liked him to take a bit more liberties with the sentences. The Orpheus Chamber Orchestra musical fluidity more than makes up for any of Scholl's rigidity however.
A recommended buy.

5 out of 5 stars Wayfaring Stranger: Folksongs.......2005-10-26

This is a fantastic CD. The countertenor voice of Andreas Scholl gives an entirley new
meaning to traditional folk music. The orchestration is just enough to give a haunting sound to each selection. ' Wayfaring stranger' and 'Wild mountain thyme' are two selections that make the purchasing of the CD worth the pice.

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good.......2005-03-05

At first I was suspicious due to the album's sleek marketing and desing. But right from the start I was delighted to hear the lush arrangements of these peculiar songs.

Granted, we do hear quite a lot of strings and even some sound effects that make the music sound dangerously "romantic", or worse, "exotic"...

And yes, the arrangements become very similar to those used by Sarah Brightman, Bocelli and other musical aberrations.... but Scholl's scholarly perfection of voice and delivery save the day. Not only that, but his (limited) potential to characterize the music is in full capacity... especially in the songs where he actually sings in his baritone in a self-contained duet.

Yes, the strings are too warm. And yes, there are parts that could even fit as background music for Disneyworld rides... And yes, it can at times sound cheap and "postcard-ish".........

But, truth be told, sometimes a Coke tastes better than Bordeaux, and sometimes a "Little Debbie" cake hits the spot better than the Sachertorte.

So, if you want to listen to songs that are warm and glowing -albeit effectist-, sung by a first class musician... this album will do the trick.

For those who are new to Scholl, I strongly reccomend his earlier CD's --namely those containing the Handel Arias, the English Lute Songs, and the German Baroque lieder.

As for "Wayfaring Stranger", play close attention to "My Love is a Red Red Rose"... If you've ever felt true love, this is the song to make you cry.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2005-01-11

Putting this wonderful voice together with an easy-listening style of ochestration was simply a brilliant idea.

This compilation will surely bring this wondrous voice to the attention of a wholly different public to the one which presently adores Andreas, and secondly, it will introduce these folk treasures to an audience at present virtually ignorant of them.

Both my husband and I enjoy this CD. We love the music of this time period. Have given it as a gift and all the recipients have felt the same.

5 out of 5 stars The best at what they do!.......1998-12-08

I just got back from a Hamilton College performance of this group and was very impressed. Not only do they master the old but they write the new! Keeping to the style of those they play of course. Of all the CDs that they have made, this is their most famous and covers the 11th to the 20th century. I can fall asleep to it, I can write a paper to it, or just enjoy it by itself.

5 out of 5 stars What a beautiful CD!.......2003-11-23

I saw this CD in a store and since I had previously heard the group at a performance in St. Charles, I thought I'd buy it. I'm very happy I did. I play it all the time. Beautiful vocals and music. They start with some wonderful John Rutter compostitions highlighting the Metropolis Chamber Orchestra and then move into more traditional choral music featuring American and British folk songs. Shenendoah closes out the CD and is just beautiful. When I heard them do it live they moved out into the church and surrounded the audience. What a moment. This CD captures the feeling of the performance and I'm glad I have it.

          Album Description

John Langstaff, now 83 years of age, is the founder and director emeritus of Revels, the non-profit performing arts company that produces Revels Records as well as 'The Christmas Revels' annual winter solstice celebrations in 12 cities across the country. This is the complete collection of Langstaff's disc, featuring all four acclaimed previously re-released CDs originally recorded in England. The recordings have been digitally re-mastered at London's famed Abbey Road Studios. Included are many traditional British and American folk songs and ballads, most with simple, art song settings. Legendary pianists Sir Gerald Moore, Sam Mason and John Powell, as well as guitarist Martin Best, are featured.

5 out of 5 stars This man is AMAZING!!!.......2005-08-14

I have had the benefit of seeing him perform with as well as without the New World Renaissance band, and all I can say is; he's -enchanting!!- I have all of his CDs and just cannot get enough of his beautiful voice, skillful pronunciation of ancient dialects, and inspired, emotional renditions of pieces that I never would have known existed without is engrossing song. His artistry and musicianship are impeccable, and he puts his soul into every word. You'll feel it even if you don't speak the language or know the lyrics- he'll capture your heart and imagination too! Take a listen!! :D

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best of the Renaissance Faire Performers.......2004-03-12

I have to admit I have a real weakness for Owain Phyfe. From the first time I heard him sing at the Great Lakes Medieval Faire I knew I had to own every CD that he put out. He carefully researchs and finds music of the era and then his beautiful voice and his friends musical talents go to work.
Any one who enjoys folk, classical voice or just really great singing will love this album.

5 out of 5 stars Indescribably soothing and beautiful.......1999-08-28

This c.d. is a collection of lovely songs in a variety of languages. Owain Phyfe's voice moves effortlessly over the lyrics, accompanied by skilled instrumental musicians. I had the opportunity to see this man live at a renaissance faire, and it was an unbelievable experience. He's one of the few performers who sounds as good live (if not better) as he does on c.d. His voice is ethereally beautiful!!! I recommend all four of his c.d.'s. When I saw him live, I got to pick the language for one of his songs...I chose Latin, and he proceeded to sing a gorgeous, haunting tune from the "Odyssey" c.d.

5 out of 5 stars A pleasant reprieve from the cares of the everyday world........1999-04-10

I have turned to this melodious CD many times to find a pleasant reprieve from the cares of the everyday world. Open the CD, note the stylized Tudor Rose which epitomizes the music of this very gifted group. You easily see that something old and familiar has been transformed into a fresh creation, yet remains faithful to its origins. The album contains several songs by popular Elizabethan composers John Dowland and Thomas Campion. Dowland has been praised for his "heavenly touch upon the lute", and these talented musicians are surely no less divine.

5 out of 5 stars Very good recording of very unique pieces........2004-06-15

This is a superb recording of seven piano pieces and one piano and violin piece from the somewhat rare composer, Roy Harris. Harris's music in this recording is very indicative of his very Western heritage. It is this property that has made these pieces great compositions to play and hear.

The music presented on this album is of very good quality, not only in composition, but in performance. Richard Zimdars gives a virtuosic performance of Harris's greatest piano pieces. My personal favourite track on this CD is the Toccata. This album is worth buying just for that piece. Harris was always able to create a very specific mood in each of his pieces, and when I listen to his music, I am enveloped by a powerful sense of whatever mood the piece is sending, be it an ecstatic insouciance or a somnolent moment.

It is my hope that Roy Harris's music becomes more known in the world, and this CD will introduce anyone into his great repertoire.

4 out of 5 stars Very polished, if you like your Carmina to behave itself.......2000-08-17

I essentially agree with the reviewer below. The Robert Shaw Chorale and the Atlanta Symphony do a very commendable performance here. The singing is polished, expertly timed, and blends beautifully with the orchestra. If you prefer this more exacting style of performance, you will probably rate this recording highly. On the other hand, if you prefer this piece to reflect its highly spiritied and indeed profane nature, there are other recordings that go in that direction. Herbert Blomstadt and the San Francisco Symphony have done a nice job in getting the "racous and raunchy" feel for this music across. There is an older recording with Eugene Ormandy on the CBS label that does likewise, but it suffers from its age (digital technonology can only do so much for older recordings). The best, most spirited recording of this piece that I have heard was over a public radio station, and it was the Berlin Radio Philharmonic (and unfortunately I did not get the conductor or featured singers). I am still searching for this one, because you could easily visualize the "knowing glances" of the male and female choruses as they worked themselves up to the sensual parts. They seemed to be having a lot of fun, keeping with the spirit of the music. Finally, the comment about some of the softer parts getting "lost," and requiring adjustment in the volume (for the Shaw verision) strikes me as accurate. That is exactly what I did upon first trying this CD, and I think any recording should not require fiddling with the volume control.

5 out of 5 stars This piece is astronomical!.......1999-05-26

I have heard this "Fortune, Empress of the world" on so many movies, and I have always loved it, and now I have found it!
