Van Damn.......2004-07-20
This man has the great influence of Art Tatum and the lines of the best of the best bop players. This recording is really major. You can feel Mr. Jones as he uses colors from the whole pallette of jazz ( especially stride which is my favourite). He even has a senior moment when he goes to the lowered nine instead of the tonic to end one of the tunes. But that just shows how real Hank Jones is. He's in his eighties and still sounds better than all the young cats right now.
classic jazz piano.......2002-02-07
mr. jones is one of the most elegant stylists to ever take to the piano bench. he plays with fluid grace that swings gently, revealing the soul of the music presented. here, in a solo context, mr. jones truly shines. there is no distraction from sidemen or other soloists, just the straight ahead playing of mr. jones. he carries us through a set of standards with charm, inventiveness, and a style that evokes ellington but at the same time is informed by bop masters like monk, powell, or herbie nichols. this is a great jazz cd for a quiet evening by candlelight. enjoy!
Vintage Hank Jones.......1999-10-05
Solo piano and Hank Jones-Need I say more?. Jones's playing is without pretence and true to the essence of musicianship. Listen to his wonderful voicings layered with his trade mark bop runs. My favourite is his solo on Toots Thielemann's waltz "Bluesette". A fantastic album.

Album Description
Excellent 2006 release that features the complete Ruby Braff Goes Girl Crazy on CD for the first time ever! The combination of Ruby Braff, an extraordinary trumpet player whose improvisational ability is matched only by his respect for a good melody, and George Gershwin, the acknowledged master of American popular song, is as natural as four and three on a pair of dice, and twice as nice if you also happen to like music. Ruby, who is almost single-handedly the reason why British Jazz publications invented the term 'mainstream' to describe traditionally-based modern playing, is a bug on the subject of melody and improvisation which refrains from distorting the composer's line. His enthusiasm for the score of George Gershwin's Girl Crazy pervades this entire album and is obviously shared by his cohorts: Al Cohn (tenor sax and clarinet), Hank Jones (piano), Jim Hall (guitar), Buzzy Drootin (drums) and bassists George Duvivier (who plays on But Not For Me, I Got Rhythm and Bidin' My Time) and Bob Haggart (who plays on the rest). Gambit.

A real Braff bargain!.......2007-03-30
This CD of cornetist Ruby Braff and pianist Hank Jones recordings from 1958 and 1961 is a real gem, as is Gambit Records' other Braff CD featuring pianist Dave McKenna. Throw in sidemen Al Cohn, Jim Hall, Roy Eldridge, Mundell Lowe, Milt Hinton and Bob Haggart, and it's a jazz collector's dream. For the first time you'll have Braff's combined tunes from his "Girl Crazy," "You're Getting to Be a Habit With Me" and "Easy Now" LPs on one 75-minute CD you'll play over and over again.

This was Jerry Herman's 1966 follow-up to his history-making Hello, Dolly!, and just as the latter had generously borrowed Thornton Wilder's The Matchmaker as its source, this one used Lawrence & Lee's Auntie Mame almost verbatim. Like Dolly, this produced hits--Louis Armstrong recorded the title song--and standards, including a Christmas tune, and was Herman's last Broadway sensation until La Cage Aux Folles more than a decade later. Other people would play Patrick Dennis's eccentric, ultra-liberal aunt, but this was Angela Lansbury's most famous role before she became a murder-solving sleuth; Bea Arthur's terrific turn as the Marlene Dietrich-based Vera Charles (recreated in the horrible Lucille Ball film version) was her most famous before becoming TV's Maude. A '60s classic that bombed during a mid-'80s revival attempt. --Bill Holdship

They Don't Make 'em Like This Anymore....................1998-05-19
THE soundtrack that got me hooked on showtunes. If you haven't heard Bea Arthur belt out "Bosom Buddies," kid, you ain't LIVIN'! And "That's How Young I Feel" is a stone-cold anthem for anyone of any age. Try not to run around your house like a mad thing when the "Overture" comes on!

A must have.......2006-05-27
This is a wonderful CD with marvelous performances and some great tunes and intelligent and witty lyrics. Very refreshing!!!
Prince and the pauper.......2005-11-30
I was the pauper in the world premiere of The Prince and The Pauper(the first one hour version) at Helen Hays Theater in Nyack, New York. It was such an amazing show...the music was so amazing! The CD is worth buying i bought it a year ago and i still listen to it. I saw the show off-broadway w/ Gerard Canonico and Dennis Michael Hall about 3 years ago and it was amazing. To bad it didnt make it to broadway...I GIVE THE CD 5 out of 5 stars...one of the best things i bought on here!
NEIL BERG.......2005-04-24
I was In Fiona the mother goose musical which is also written by neil berg. He was my camp director and an inspritaion to me to keep tying in theater. You should definitly buy this CD to get a taste of what the amazing composer is like.
Great new family- appropriate Musical Show: Exceptional Cast.......2003-04-01
Last June I had opportunity to take in this show at the Lamb Theatre Off-Broadway, and it was delightful! The cast was exceptional, and I was pleased to hear the same cast on this recording.
The songs are catchy. I purchased 2 CD's for my children, and now I'm going to need to buy a third copy: all 3 love the music (ages 12, 9, and 6). Neil Berg has done a superb job with the music. i've listened countless times, so we can ping along on nearly all the songs. If you like family musicals, you'll love "The Prince and the Pauper". And if you make it to NYC, look for a comeback of the show at the Lamb Theatre. Look for their news of the show.
Wonderful CD.......2003-03-29
A delightful and catchy score. With fantastic vocals by the adults and three incredibly gifted children, this is a must have for any musical theatre collector. "Twilight", "Thrill of Adventure", "If I Were You", "Simple Boy", and "Is This Love", just to name a few, are some of the most vibrant and catchy songs you'll likely to hear on or off Broadway.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent argument for watching Shakespeare's plays.......2005-11-29
'Shakespeare's Musick' by Musicians of the Globe, lead by Philip Pickett is, like a similar recording, 'Songs and Dances from Shakespeare' by The Broadside Band' is a very nice recreation of what you would have heard at the Globe Theatre in London during or after the performances of Will Shakespeare's plays. I will also say that I believe it is just a bit better than the alternative recording if only for it's fewer 'Hey Nonnie Nonnies'. But, both recordings are not the best you can find of Renaissance music. Compared to excellent recordings of Renaissance dances and liturgical music, these seem to suffer from being out of context.
These are well worth the listen, but they will probably not set your toes to tapping as you might to performances by, for example, the Renaissance specialist band Piffaro.
Elizabethan Surprise!.......2000-02-12
If someone had asked me before I listened to the music provided on this CD if I liked English music of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, I would have wrinkled my nose and said a resounding "Yuck!" I came across "Shakespeare's Musick" quite by accident at the local library. I was working on a project dealing with William Shakespeare and decided to take this CD home to see if it would fit into my theme. From the very first song to the very last, Philip Pickett and the Musicians of the Globe had me captivated. The sound is pure and lively and takes the listener on a ride that transcends time. It certainly made this listener a convert! I am now purchasing "Shakespeare's Musick" to add to my own collection and would highly recommend its addition to anyone elses. It will open your ears to a whole other world of sound -- sound that not only tickles the fancy, but enchants the soul.

Grandpa Jones's death in 1998 robbed country music of its last link to the folk songs, vaudeville, and hokum from which it partly came. There's little in the way of darkness or pain here and there are some awkward flirtations with '50s mainstream country, but songs like "Rattler's Pup," "Mountain Dew," "Eight More Miles to Louisville," and "Old Towzer" are endlessly engaging. They're also a catechism on where country music came from, even if they don't tell us much about where it's headed. Listen too for Grandpa's hayseed banjo and Paul Yandell's tiny, perfect guitar solos. --Colin Escott
Customer Reviews:
Now this is fun stuff...........2007-05-26
Like so many people, my memories of Grandpa Jones extend about as far as his appearances on Hee Haw, but this CD is but a sampling of some of his best-known music. "Mountain Dew" and "Rattler's Pup" are instantly recognizable, and bring to mind a time when music was just plain fun. "Everyone's Grandpa" is probably a more complete collection of his work, but this is far more affordable and accessible for those wanting to add just the essentials.
Great banjo-led folk-country music.......2005-01-13
Grandpa Jones recorded for several different record labels and often re-recorded his old songs. In the thirties, he was nicknamed Grandpa aged just 22 because of his general outlook and his old-sounding voice.
In the late forties, Grandpa achieved great success with Mountain dew, Eight more miles to Louisville and Old rattler, while signed to King records. He switched to RCA in 1952 and made some great music for them before switching to Decca in 1956. This CD contains everything that Grandpa recorded for Decca between 1956 and 1959 - just fifteen studio tracks and one live recording.
Here you will find re-recordings of some of his earlier country hits with King (Mountain dew, Eight more miles to Louisville, Dark as a dungeon) along with songs about dogs and hunting (Rattler's pup, The hunting's over for tonight, Old Towzer).
Grandpa had a sense of humor, never clearer than in Don't bring your banjo home, an adaptation of Johnny Cash's Don't take your guns to town, and Daylight saving time, about changing the clocks in October (a debate that still endures). Grandpa clearly liked Johnny's early music - he also recorded a straight cover of Picking time. Another great cover is Waiting for a train, originally by Jimmie Rodgers, Grandpa's first musical idol.
After his spell with Decca, Grandpa recorded for Monument (1960 to 1973) and CMH (1976 to 1981) where he continued to make great music, albeit in a somewhat different style, more folk than country.
If you enjoy old-time country or folk music, especially if you like Pete Seeger (another banjo-picking singer), you might enjoy Grandpa's music. But if you want the original versions of his country hits, look for a compilation of his King recordings.
Grandpa's late-'50s Decca sides still sound great.......2004-10-12
Country-music master Grandpa Jones recorded prolifically for several different labels; this CD represents his entire output for Decca Records (1956-59). This writer was pleasantly surprised by what a consistent performer Jones was: the 1958 rendition of "Mountain Dew" heard here is almost precisely the same as his 1971 performance on "Hee Haw," right down to the ad-libbed humming during one of the banjo breaks.
The CD features traditional country ballads (with Jones leading a close-harmony vocal arrangement); up-tempo banjo specialties with Grandpa's infectiously genial solo vocals ("Mountain Dew" is a highlight); and sometimes a happy combination of the two styles ("The Huntin's Over for Tonight" is a glorious hootenanny that you'll enjoy again and again, with Jones leading the whole gang). There are also some tongue-in-cheek selections: "Daylight Saving Time" has Grandpa railing against monkeying with the clocks, and he practically spits out the title phrase contemptuously; "The All-American Boy," the story of a backwoods kid who became a rock-and-roll sensation, seems an odd choice for Grandpa Jones, but he sings it in character with chip-on-the-shoulder cockiness.
This collection could have used "Old Rattler" and some of Grandpa's other tunes, but it is confined to the Decca sessions. It does include an unissued track, a live recording, and a rare side issued only as a 45-rpm single. Those who know Grandpa's vocals on "Hee Haw" will not be disappointed by this CD.
Classiest Grandpa Jones collection available........2003-12-04
First off, the music here is from his time on Decca Records in the 1950's, in fact this is his entire Decca output (excluding one lost song). Now, Grandpa's most well known recordings are were on King Records, and his chart hits were on Monument Records.
The booklet is very well done, and the essay is great. Recording dates are included.
Probably the best cut is a live version of "Cindy" from the Grand Ole Opry, with Ray Price introducing Grandpa.

Only if you're looking for EVERYTHING George Jones recorded.......2004-08-03
Very bad audio quality recordings from early in George's career. The only notable track is "Heartbreak Hotel." This was originally recorded under the name "Thumper Jones" and was
an attempt to cash in on the rising popularity of rock n' roll. George was so embarassed by the whole thing he didn't want his name on it.
