The album that carries U2 into its 25th year--and likely the mixed blessings of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame--is one of its most frank and focused since the days of October and War. But its gestation was anything but simple, in part salvaged from '03 sessions the band deemed subpar. Enter Steve Lillywhite, the band's original producer and sometime collaborator in the decades since, who helped retool the track "Native Son" (originally an antigun screed) into the aggressive iPod anthem "Vertigo" and leaves his distinctive stamp on the muscular "All Because of You." Perhaps weary of ceaseless, fashion-driven reinvention in the wake of monumental success, U2 seem only too happy here to re-embrace their original sonic trademarks in service of more daring, pop-melodic hooks than they've collected in one place in decades. The Eno/Lanois produced "Love and Peace or Else" may shimmer with the duo's electro-production conceits, but it's Edge's lugubrious, postmodern John Lee Hooker guitar swagger that drives it. Elsewhere, Bono's trademark dramaturgy is spotlighted on "City of Blinding Lights," the unabashed romance of "A Man and a Woman," and the confessional "Sometimes You Can't Make It on Your Own." It may come wrapped in a conundrum--is it nostalgic retrenchment or a sum of the band's endless musical catharsis?--It's also the album where, Fly and MacPhisto be damned, U2 boldly claims its arena titan mantle with apologies to no one. --Jerry McCulley

Losing their clarity, nothing you want to sing along with.......2007-06-29
I have been a fan of U2 for a long time. They are one of the great all time rock bands. But this album just does not do it for me. The sound is muddy. There are no clear, strong melodies. U2 made their name with stirring anthems, that combining idealism with clear, piercing music. Oh well, everybody has off days. This one is not a keeper.
U2-How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb.......2007-06-18
Well, what can I say, it's U2. They really don't put out any crappy stuff. I like it.
Not so good........2007-03-15
A long-time U2 fan. I saw them when I was a student when they were playing the Hammersmith Odeon in London. There are only two good tracks on this album. "Vertigo" and "Sometimes you can`t make it on your own", although the second is beginning to sound like a repetitive theme. Vertigo is excellent, original sound and production, when I first heard it I loved it, not even knowing it was U2. Great energy. U2 should be embarassed about putting out such a mediocre album. Doesn`t anyone tell them, "hey.. that is not actually a good enough song to put out". I was in a band myself, sometimes a song was rubbish, and you just have to let it die. Not all babies are beautiful.
Very misleading.......2007-02-11
Doesn't actually tell you how to dismantle an atomic bomb. Very frustrating.
High Quality but no progression from A.T.Y.C.L.B.......2007-01-20
Firstly U2 are beyond legends and their success is almost undefinable. There has never been a band that have survvived this long and still been innovative. Sadly that innovation and newness that we associated with U2 is dying as they are a band artistically going backwards. Sure the diehards (and there's millions of them) will dispute this but i cant help get the impression thart Bono's politics and long periods away from the band is finally catching up with them as the end product seems rushed, forced, much too like A.T.Y.C.L.B. In other words a bit of a cookie cutter mail it in job. im not sure if there is much left in this band anaway. Maybe 2 albums at best. they have nothing to be ashamed of but maybe their time has come and they should go out on a high. The over-exposure of this band is what is killing it. people are getting tired of Bono's political speeches from the stage and even his voice is cracking at some of the gigs. Still U2 are the most heavily critiqued and criticized band in the world because they are still the best. Not by much any more but just about. Coldplay are right behind them and moving up fast and the british invasion #2 post punk movement is putting trememdous pressure on U2s relevancy. But like i said their crown will still have to be won and it could be a few years yet.

A very good U2 again.......2007-07-06
I just love this band, this a a very good U2 release. I was not very impressed by this band until "The Unforgettable Fire" in the 80's.
They have lost me with "Pop" and "Zooropa" but they have touch right on target with "All that you can't leave behind". "How to dismantle an atomic bomb" is in the same field of the previous cd. Many hits, very good ballads, incredible voice by Bono. For sure, as some reviewer mentionned, his voice is not as it once was, but the emotion is there as never before. I just love "Sometimes you can't make it on your own", this is an amazing song with such a level of emotion. I have the edition "Deluxe" and to me, the couch version of this song is a pure jewel. It is an acoustic version that is incredible. Buy it !
Not the most creative album but still very good........2006-11-28
I have read many reviews of this album and I can see why some people are upset. U2 always prided themselves on writing music that was new, fresh, and original. Now it seems that they would rather sample themselves and stick with the formulas that they know, rather than get creative.
I have to be honest and say that this is not something that bothers me the way it does many other reviewers on this site. When I put this CD in my player, I like what I hear. The music is good even if it's not U2's most creative adventure.
Let's not forget that U2 have been around a long time. It is very hard for them to please everyone. The young fans want one thing. The twenty and thirty somethings want something else. The 40+ crowd might even want U2 to return to their roots completely.
I remember the 1990's when U2 got creative and funky...and you know something, everyone complained back then too! "Where is the old U2?" people used to say. "Why did they change their style when everyone loved their 1980's sound". So you see, you can't please everyone.
Why not just listen to the music and see how it makes you feel rather then throwing around all this analysis. Try that, and you will see that the songs on the album are very deep, meaningful, and exciting to listen to. personaly, I can't get it out of my CD Player.
A good album.......2006-11-17
Overall this is a good album. A couple of tracks do very little for me, but there are some that shine!! Reading the Bono Interviews book also helped me to understand some of this album a bit more, especially those songs dealing with his father's death. Favorite songs: Vertigo, Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own (I still cry every time I hear it), Original of the Species, and Yahweh.
U2 is better than this.......2005-12-01
This is a decent album by general standards, but U2's least evocative work. This album is plain and forgettable compared to their other excellent work. There are several strong tracks, but the lyrical content overall is weak, and the musical content is nothing new from average pop rock. How has the studio sapped the emotion of such a great live band? If you are new to U2, check out Joshua Tree or Achtung Baby instead.

Customer Reviews:
Pathetic Fans bring this masterpiece down!.......2005-10-20
The easy way for longtime U2 fans to bash the current cd is to say that they have sold out. All those of you who claim HTDAAB one of the band's worst cd's are obviously blinded by your pathetic ideals of selling out.
If you judge the product as it is, ignoring the fact that they are on Ipod commercials now you will find a complete GEM. The album is a roller coaster of emotions, it can take you to highs as well as bring emphasis on the low moments of life.
"Sometimes you can't make it" is very criticised by so called "old school" fans; what you all don't realize is that this is an gift that Bono gave to himself and his father. It comes from so deep in the heart that we as listeners can feel what he is saying.
Sure, the album has a couple misfires but the overall product is outstanding. Just because U2 has "sold out" doesn't mean a damn thing, and yes I DO believe that the album goes in the same sentence as Achtung Baby, Joshua Tree, War and Boy.
IT IS THAT GOOD!
U2 prove again why they are one of, if not the best band of all time.
No, U2 have not lost it!.......2005-10-16
I just wanted to add something seeing as the few reviews I did read were rather "blah" for lack of a better word! I think this album is a great album, mind you, like all of U2's albums, it took me awhile to get into it. But thats how it works, they keep mixing it up to keep themselves and the audience on their toes. Not sure about buying this super deluxe edition, but the album is a must for any U2 fan (hardcore or not).
What a great product!.......2005-08-18
This is a beautiful collector's item, extremely high quality - as I'm used to expect from U2. I love the cd, listen to it often. It has some of the finest songs U2 has ever released - they just seem to get better and better. The dvd is great and the book is very interesting and unusual.
3-1/2 stars -- You too can enjoy.......2005-04-23
I noticed that the first two pages of reviews for U2's latest album are almost entirely made up of one-star ratings, and it almost made me sick. But I just want to clear things up for the lovers AND haters of this CD: no, I'm not a hardcore fan of the band; and no, I didn't rate this less than four stars because it's no Joshua Tree or Achtung Baby.
I'm not exactly sure where the title How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb came from, but at any rate, this is a pretty decent album. The album starts out with "Vertigo", which had to grow on me for some reason (and I know this is old news, but...did Bono forget how to count?). Other good songs include "Yahweh", "One Step Closer" and my favorite, "All Because of You". And "Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own" is a wonderful I'll-be-there-for-you track that doesn't sound so clichéd.
To be honest, though, this album is half-good, half-okay. And there are a couple of missteps. As good as "Miracle Drug" is, it sounds just like "Beautiful Day"; and "Original of the Species" makes no sense at all. Anyway, while this isn't U2's best album, it's definitely not a bomb, so if you're a more open-minded consumer like I am, then you won't be mad that you picked this up.
Anthony Rupert
P.S. In response to another reviewer, "Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own" is the third single off this album, not the second ("All Because of You" was the second).
I Wanted To Hate It, But I Fell in Love With It.......2005-04-12
It took me awhile to get around to picking this one up. I kept trying to erase the tune Vertigo from my memory banks, but to no avail. I finally succumbed and slapped down my plastic. After the blandness of POP and the clever-cleverness of Everything You Can't Leave Behind, I was expecting a couple singles and a bunch of basic under-produced downers. I was happily surprised. Bono has re-taken control over the better part of the lyrics to great effect. Listen to Larry's wonderful drumming on "Miracle Drug," and Adam's bass on "City of Blinding Lights"...Smashing! The Edge usually delivers brilliance, but the riffs for "Yahweh" are exquisite, and move me more than any playing I've heard for quite some time. Although this album revisits some of the sonic landscapes u2 have taken us to before, they painted those landscapes in the first place, and Im happy to see them again...

Brilliant Album -- A Must Have!!!.......2005-01-20
I purchased this CD from amazon.co.uk (it's about $10 cheaper to import it yourself) in order to get "Fast Cars", track # 12 that for some reason they decided not to put on the US release. I'm really not quite sure why this album has gotten such mixed reviews. I've never seen so many critics give something 5 stars and then trash it in their written review. But I have ignored them, as usual, and just bought it only having heard "Vertigo" on the radio. It's got a little of everything -- "Vertigo", "All Because of You", and "Fast Cars" are fast and catchy while "Sometimes You Can't Make it On Your Own" and "A Man and a Woman" leave me thoughtful. It's everything I love about U2. It's a little different and that's fine by me. As long as it's good, they can play what they like and I'll love it. And I can't imagaine something not good coming from U2.

FANTASTIC!.......2007-04-15
U2 is truly amazing. This is their 14th, and one of their greatest albums. The sound is quite different from the earlier albums that most people are used to such as the Joshua Tree or Achtung Baby, but the songs have very deep meaning and are beautiful. This album is a must have!
Classic album, cool packaging, disappointing contents.......2004-12-16
I'm a huge fan of the new album but the book this is packaged with is a bit disappointing. First thing you notice is missing is the lyrics to the songs. Then the contents, while interesting, will give you a headache trying to read. The words are in longhand and Bono must have failed penmanship. If you're a U2 fan, you'll still like it; and Fast Cars is one of my favorite songs on the album (surprised it wasn't on the regular album as it's stronger than a few of the songs on it)but I was hoping it would be filled with cool band photos, history of the songs etc...but alas, no. (though you can get all that info on the U2 website)

Fast Cars.......2006-02-28
Fast Cars is the greatest song of ALL TIME! It's better than Amazing Grace, Stairway to Heaven and Foggy Mountain Breakdown all put together times a billion!
Sheesh give me a break.
It's a song similar to Elevation but Elevation is a much better song.
And it's similar to Canary in a Coalmine by another Brit band.
It's nothing new and not that great.
Moroccan Vibes!!.......2005-01-01
I'm still on the fence about the entire disc of "Bomb," but this apparently extra song "Fast Cars" is the best thing in the past 15 years!
I've listened to it 5 times in a row now, and I'll probably listen to it 5 more times! The drums are Moroccan, the entire Mideastern vibe just makes your feets "get 'mobin!"
Why didn't they make this a single? I can't believe they made this an "extra" song, when it's the most rocking tune on the whole disc.
:):)
SD Russell, you are mistaken........2004-12-02
One listen of the first 1-20 seconds of "Fast Cars" lets you know clearly why it's a b-side.
It is not one of U2's best songs, filler if anything... the same droning chorus over and over: not a song you'll look forward to and easily the least desirable song on the entire CD hands down.
If I didn't know better (which I don't) I'd say SD is sitting on a load of these and wants to try to sell them at an outragious markup.
Fast Cars -- worth the money?.......2004-11-30
The only reason I can think of for buying this CD is the extra song, "Fast Cars," which is not on the American release. It's a great song, too. I'm not that big a fan of the album itself; there are several great songs, but also a few lackluster songs, so it's a bit of a mixed bag. "Fast Cars" is a standout, though, AND it's the song from which the album draws its title. I'd suggest buying the AMerican release, and then going to iTunes and buying the less-than-a-dollar "Fast Cars." Then you can make your very own version of this import, and have spent considerably less.
Great song, though, no doubt about that.
fast cars.......2004-11-30
I got the limited edition with the dvd and the book, and the cd comes with the 12th song 'fast cars'. So unless the versions are different, there is no reason to buy the japaneese import, unless you want it all.
