Paul Westerberg's solo work has never exactly measured up to the life-changing music he made with the the Replacements. But it seems like that's more of a problem for everyone else than him. Folker is the fifth full-length album he has recorded in his basement--counting the ones produced by his slightly more mischievous alter ego Grandpaboy--and easily the most relaxed. The lyrics seem largely tossed off, the instruments sound like they're competing with the hum of the heater, and Westerberg sings in the gruff voice of someone who's just rolled out of bed. Under the right circumstances these are all endearing qualities, to be sure (see: Damien Rice's O), although more discerning fans might find that bluesy dirges like "When Will We Arrive?" and "As Far As I Know" signal a slight lack of direction. --Aidin Vaziri

Album Description

With the success of previous records "Come Feel Me Tremble" and "Stereo/Mono", Westerberg is back with a new full length studio album. "Folker" contains 13 brand new songs Paul produced and recorded in his basement in Minnesota. This album is a continuation of the prolific songwriting that has made him one of the most influential artists of his generation.

2 out of 5 stars They can't all be winners.......2007-06-22

While I consider Westerberg to be an incredibly talented performer and songwriter, his solo contributions have really been hit or miss for me. Folker is no exception. There just doesn't seem to be much there. Where 14 Songs, Stereo, and Eventually all had some standout moments, this album seems to hum along without much ambition.

4 out of 5 stars The best of the "ragged" Paul.......2006-12-18

I thought Paul's solo career peaked during the 14 Songs, Eventually, Suicane era but this album stuck with me after several turns. Combine this with the charming Open Season soundtrack (my young boy loves Meet Me In The Meadow), and Paul may just have a third act in him.

1 out of 5 stars Another uninspired one.......2006-08-27

I'm sorry to say I bought this one based on the positive reviews here. I don't know what these guys ware smoking but I'd like some of it if it makes one think this is great.

Nobody ever pulled off the one man band thing and made it sound interesting and this is no exception. I don't know if this material is so uninspired because he knew he wouldn't be recording it with a band, and a producer, or whether it just sounds that way as a result. But it's another dog nonetheless.

5 out of 5 stars Solid Westerberg.......2006-07-25

This album is wonderful. I have been a Mats/Westerberg fan for 15 years, and this album reminds me of classic Mats tunes. Good pop edge, good feel. Get it.

5 out of 5 stars Best since "Pleased to Meet Me''--no kidding.......2006-03-10

I know you're skeptical. I'm always skeptical. Every album comes out, and someone says it's great. Then I buy it, listen to it a few times, and file it away forever, wondering why I keep trying. Well, we all know why I keep trying-what if he really did something impossibly great again?

I think Paul's solo career has amounted to very little of any worth. I think the Grandpaboy material is pretty much an insult to his fans-"look, I don't even have to try, and they'll still buy it."

Well, I'm here to tell you that this album finally delivers on the promise. This is the best collection of songs Paul's released since "Pleased to Meet Me." No lame blues, no half-constructed or half-recorded songs. He's really trying here, and it shows. This album has all of the great Westerberg hallmarks: it's funny, beautiful, heart-breaking, gruff, and, occasionally rocking. It's still pretty low-fi, but there's a full, real band, and the performances are not tossed off, but relaxed and confident. Paul's singing is perfectly imperfect--sometimes off-key, but when wasn't it? The real revelation is his guitar-playing. He really pulls off a nice Keith/Ronny country raunch, with some great rhythm playing (see "Now I Wonder," "My Dad"). In fact, to me, this record has a real "Exile on Main St." vibe. Obviously, it's not that kind of masterpiece, but it's got the same kind of laid back, country-honk, recorded in the basement vibe. Trying, but not so much that the soul of the songs gets squashed. The record is lived-in and breathes.

There are some great, great songs here. Most are excellent. "Twenty-three years ago" is one of Paul's all-time great songs. Up there with pretty much anything he's ever written. In general, there's a real maturity here (finally)-not old, but mature. It feels like he's finally put the disappointments of the failed expectations of the past to rest. Like he's finally really past all of it, and just writing and making great music again.

Replacements fan, I know who you are. And I'm telling you to give Paul another shot here. Listen to this thing 7 or 8 times, and tell me it's not great. He has finally once again produced something that is worthy of his staggering talent.

4 out of 5 stars A wailing, hands-in-the-air anthem!!!.......2002-06-07

What an awesome, uplifting song. The first time I heard this tune, I instantly fell in love. And the first time I heard it at a club, it was a circuit explosion: smiles, hands-in-the-air... off the hook! I'm normally not big on bubble-gum anthems, but this is a good one.

4 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST SINGLES OF 2001 AND 2002.......2002-01-04

This single is really great! Jessica has a beautiful, powerful voice, and, paired with Jonathan Peters's awesome beats, this song is incredible! It's got very simple and direct lyrics, which fits the song well. My favorite mix on the single is the Jonathan Peters Club Mix (Track 2). JP's rolling drums and wicked synth work perfectly complements the song. The JP radio edit (Track 1) is essentially a shorter version of the Club Mix, with a few extra vocal samples taken from the original. This single is a perfect example of why JP is one of the U.S.'s top remixers, and is a great way to introduce Jessica's awesome voice to me and the rest of America. The album version (Track 4) is a nice, smooth version. JP's Sound Factory Dub has some twisted drumbeats and a nice synth hook with a bit of middle-eastern flavor, somewhat like HQ2's remix of Amber's Yes!, but not to the same extent as the HQ2 mix. Overall, this is a great single. The only reason this only gets 4 stars and not 5 is that the single doesn't include a dub of the Club Mix and a Sound Factory Vocal. Here's hoping this song becomes a huge radio hit soon!

5 out of 5 stars IS U GONNA BE ABLE TO LOVE THIS SONG???.......2001-12-01

Jessica Folker is the best new artist to hit the clubs, and her pop/dance sound is great. This song is very sweet along with Jessica's vocals and the remixes are jumping off the wall.

Track Listing:

1.) To Be Able To Love (Jonathan Peters Radio Mix) = This remix is what I would like to call the original song because I think that this remix sounds so much better than that of the original mix. This remix is dance friendly and would be off the hook in the clubs.

2.) To Be Able To Love (Jonathan Peters Club Mix) = Just incase you didn't get enough of the first Jonathan Peters remix here is an extended club mix with extra beats.

3.) To Be Able To Love (Sound Factory Dub) = This is an interesting remix because it ads a dark beat to Jessica's sweet sounding vocals and lyrics. This remix is also dance friendly in the clubs.

4.) To Be Able To Love (Original Mix) = This is the original song which is not as nearly as good as that of the first track on this single. This track sounds very pop and there are too many backup vocals, the beat is somewhat generic, and maybe a little bit too pop. I'm not saying this version of the song is bad, I'm just saying that the remixes are much better. I must say that the remixes do compensate for this version of the song.

All Jessica Folker wants is to be able to love, in hopes that you peeps will show her some love. So show some love and check out this hit that has just begun.

5 out of 5 stars Hear the rest, if you think this is a "one hit wonder"!.......2001-11-14

This won't be a flash in the pan. Jessica Folker's voice and style are all her own, and are consistently good throughout her music. If she can keep her unique quality as she markets beyond the Euro-Asian audiences who have already enjoyed her work, we are all in for so much more quality music.

There are many "Jessicas" in popular music today-- only one Jessica Folker!

5 out of 5 stars Back and better.......2001-11-11

Where do I start? What a powerful song by a woman with an even more powerful voice! Jessica Folker wins my heart over with her song "To Be Able To Love" every single time I hear it! Dance music fans will not be disappointed with this CD! It's all you could ever want and more! The beat is catchy and the song is just as addictive as Da Buzz's smash hit "Let Me Love You"! If you can't get enough of dance music to keep you on your feet, this is definatly a must have!

5 out of 5 stars An average album by a great singer.......2003-05-29

I never heard of jessica until her 2nd album came out. Really i didnt know Dino is her 2nd album. That show how ignorance we are
towards her.It also show how bad the record company is promoting this amazing singer. Since I finally get to know this soulful singer,
i must congratulate her record company of finally bringin some light on jessica's talent.Hopefully she will get better luck for her
next album, if it come out.

I bought Dino, because of one reason. The song 'to be be able to love' is a powerful dance track with powerful soulful power of jessica.
i must say her voice really suit that song. the album open with the right track.captivating dance tune. who will open any eyes for those
who has not yet known jessica.

'missing you crazy' is a mid tempo number, her voice shines through.but i bet this song isnt that great.typical max martin, composition.

'crash like a wrecking ball'is a weird song with a weird lyrics. but the music is uplifting rocking beat.will make u shake ur booty and dance.
another potential dancefloor hit.2nd great song after 'to be able to love'.jessica deliver fast beat number with her powerful vocal perfectly.
im sure she can kick JLO's butt any sec with her vocal.if only she's has those help from sony producers.

            'lost without your love'is a ballad.a moderate ballad.not bad.

            'tonite'upbeat number.great vocals.another potential favourite.

'if i was your girl'this song is a midtempo jazzy, blues kinda mood type of song.average.

            'i know love'midtempo, average.

'been and gone'upbeat number.potential favourite.great to sing along with.

'love you like a fool'upbeat number.jessica use different vocal style in this song.average song.

            'punk'upbeat rocking music.average song.

'miracles'this is a great ballad.this is another prove, given a great song.jessica will shines.her voice is great.waiting for the right song with the
right music to shines.my favourite.great for karaoke too!

'wish i was the one'average song.this song sound american.maybe it has some country music touch in it. but nothing special.
            just average.

'dis moi pourquoi'a great ballad aswell.maybe because of its tune.great ballad.

'i dont wanna talk about it'ballad.average.sound like recycle ballad from the 80s that whitney use to sing.junk.

its too sad that jessica has to stuck with an average type of song.so i guess no wonder why she is still where she is now.this
girl has talent, got voice better than samantha mumba or kelly clarkson for god sake.she can sing.and her voice stand on her
own.she need a great producer and the best song composer, writer to make her shines. there are only few hits potential
in Dino.this album is an average quality album by a great singer.too bad.if you love jessica and wants her to stay, buy this
album or else she might join other great singer who has been drop out of the record label due to poor record sales.

due to this i gave 5 stars to her vocal powerness and her talent.
3 star for her album quality.
