Crest of a Wave
Editorial Reviews
About the Artist
Bill Pere, a native of New York City, is the national IMC 2003 Indie Artist of the Year, and an Official Connecticut State Troubadour. He is Executive Director of the Connecticut Songwriters Association, Founder of the LUNCH Ensemble, and author of many internationally published articles on songwriting. Bill is recognized coast to coast as one of today's foremost teachers in the craft of songwriting. Bill has released 14 CD's and has written and produced 23 stage plays. He has twice been named Connecticut Songwriter of the Year, and has received several national awards. Bill's early influences include Harry Chapin, Jimmy Webb, and Roger McGuinn. Bill is best known for his cinematic, story-telling lyrics which present poignant tales of the poor, the homeless, the restlessness of youth, and value of each individual life. Bill's signature 12-string guitar style, mixed with full band arrangements, gives a distinct and solid sound to his music.
Album Description
When was the last time a song made you gasp in amazement? Since the original version was released in 1991, "Crest of a Wave" has created a buzz up and down the Eastern Seacoast. Called "an incredible piece of songwriting" by the Connecticut Songwriters Association, this album of interwoven story-songs launched Bill's career and made him a nationally respected lyrical craftsman in today's music scene. Bill was named Connecticut Songwriter of the Year in 1991 and national Indie Artist of the Year in 2003. The songs are inspired by exhibits at the Mystic Seaport Museum, and the settings of the songs are based on places in this recreated maritime village. The unusual combination of contemporary orchestral sound and stories about people and love in a 19th century seacoast town gives the songs wide appeal, and the lyrics are cinematic and powerful. Bill's midi-guitar arrangements are very distinctive.
Crest of a Wave, Music, Bill Pere, The contemporary folk-pop arrangements of Bill's powerful story-songs transport you back to the 19th century seacoast and into the lives of the characters. You'll experience their joys and sorrows, romance and heartbreak on the seas and shore.

Gathering lilacs and rarer flowers........2002-08-22
Justice is done to Welsh-born composer, pianist, actor and man of the theatre Ivor Novello in this Naxos CD. The artists who first performed them are heard in 18 items, recorded between 1917 and 1950. Ivor Novello himself is heard in two of them, providing some spoken repartee as he accompanies Edna Best at the piano. Most were recorded in the 1930s. The sound quality is good enough for the lyrics to be clearly heard. They bespeak a long-vanished era, but the music still has charm.
Film buffs can nowadays most easily see Ivor Novello in an Alfred Hitchcock film of 1926, "The Lodger". Actor Jeremy Northam portrayed him in the recent film, "Gosford Park". Ivor Novello starred in his last production, "King's Rhapsody", and died nine days before I saw it in London in March 1951.

Amazon.com
This set is a fine introduction to Beethoven for a certain class of listeners. It is much too long, detailed, and serious for children. It is not for advanced musicologists, either. Author-narrator Jeremy Siepmann avoids musical analysis altogether, concentrating instead on biographical material about Beethoven and his friends and providing historical and social background. Siepmann's text is absorbing and is frequently illustrated with substantial music examples (usually complete movements) from the Naxos catalog. Unfortunately, the first such example (from the Seventh Symphony) sounds regrettably mushy, but otherwise, the performances are consistently rewarding. If Naxos has put together this set, with its very large booklet, partly to promote its catalog of Beethoven recordings, the company may well find listeners attracted by the examples offered. The complete reproduction of the spoken text seems like a waste of space and paper, but the remaining material in the booklet is intelligently written and useful. Even people generally familiar with Beethoven are sure to find something new and interesting here. --Leslie Gerber

Album Description
SoundPath CD enhances meditation, relaxation, yoga, and creativity.
An enchanting singer whose luminous voice summons the souls of ancient Armenia and Persia, Naaz transcends ordinary experience and inspires people to dream, dance, meditate, and create.
Naaz's wordless vocal journeys resonate and soar to rhythms and harmonies of marimba, hammer dulcimer and tabla transporting listeners to serenity. Minds meet, hearts open, rhythms dialog, harmonies align as a SoundPath unfolds.
Customer Reviews:
Deep and Beautiful.......2000-11-22
Naaz Hosseini's SoundPath recording is a deep, beautiful, and important work of art. At this time it is the day before Thanksgiving and I am now listening to SoundPath for the fourth or fifth time in the last couple of weeks. It grows with each listen, starting out as quite interesting and unfolding to reveal itself as a work of art that is groundbreaking and nearly amazing. It is nothing less than a wordless sounding and testament to the range of human spirit, the product of a unique artist at a peak. It is both grounded and inspiring, an appropriate "soundtrack" for relaxation, focusing, or a genuine act of courage. The sound itself is hard to categorize, since like all original and great art it transcends boundaries. While it might be most easily labeled as either Middle Eastern or New Age, this doesn't do justice to the work. In its soulfullness, potency, and passion, it reaches into the territory of such an artist as Van Morrison, while in its fluidity and exquisite tenderness it is able to point towards the heartbreaking truths vocalized by Billie Holiday. SoundPath is a bold and sensitive recording of the human spirit. It is no exaggeration to say that Naaz Hosseini's SoundPath is a true Thanksgiving gift, a real and affirming reflection of life itself.
Soundpath for maximum meditation.......2000-10-30
I teach self defense to members of the military and police. They need something to keep them balanced during these extremely powerful and agressive courses. Guided meditation is the method of choice. During the most recent meditations I have have used the Soundpath CD as my musical support. It has been highly effective. If you can get the marines to meditate and enjoy it you're doing something right. Soundpath gives you a direct path to tranquility. I can't recommend it enough.
Transported.......2000-03-16
When I listen to SoundPath, I feel transported out of this world and into a world of peace, joy, and hope. Naaz's voice is clear and strong and very powerful. It all comes across perfectly. The blend is amazing. Everything seems just right with the instrumentation and the voice coming together in a most magical way.
Let "Soundpath" light your way.......2000-03-15
When was the last time you were in the Middle East? Recently, along time ago or never? Get out the most exotic incense you have, light some candles, sit back, close your eyes and let Naaz (pronounced Nahz) take you away upon the wings of her crystal clear voice and haunting melodies to a place at once ancient and new. And as the incense smoke snakes it's way through the air, it will mingle with visions of exotic and far away lands. Let yourself go. Be prepared, your body will want to sway with the currents created by Bill Ruyle's hammer dulcimer, tabla, and marimba, while Naaz's decidedly, though slightly dissonant violin, nestles it's way into your consciousness, creating a sense of freedom. It almost scoffs at the idea of boundaries of any kind.
I recommend this CD for meditation, relaxing background for whatever you happen to be doing, or to create an exotic backdrop for a dinner party. It is not a CD of Middle Eastern music per se, but there is a definite flavor of Armenia and Persia, both of which are Naaz's heritage, in some of the tunes. The rest of the compositions go off on their own, exploring and discovering. They will take you into your own emotions and imagination.
If I were to compare this music to anything it would have to be Loreena McKennit - less Celtic, though there is a slight flavor of this created by Bill's magical and imaginative hammer dulcimer. There were even moments he had me believing he was playing sitar. Though there are no lyrics, the music is very lyrical.
I had the good fortune of attending the CD release party at which Naaz performed a few of her spontaneous compositions. My eyes kept wanting to close so that I could travel, and my body just kept swaying. Watching Naaz perform, it was clear that she was allowing the music to flow through her as well.
