About the Artist
June Simon – A lost voice – returned

Canada certainly has produced many great artists, singers and songwriters whose work and performances have crossed over into other countries. June Simon is such a recording artist. Her voice – lost for twenty years – has now miraculously returned and is being enjoyed by thousands of people finally.

Her voice training started when she was ten years of age. She soon became the star student of the Metropolitan Opera singer Polyna Savrides whom June met when she performed at the United States consulate. Madam Savrides had arranged for June to begin an operatic career with her beautiful coloratura voice in England. It was at this very time that June was struck by a violent tissue disorder, a disease where wild tissue growth begins to literally choke off the internal organs. Going through nine major operations, the administered anesthetics destroyed her voice and her career – until now – after twenty years – a true miracle.

It was the Hawaiian classical guitarist Winston Tan, who during a recording session asked June to help him interpret a song. Suddenly, a voice appeared which caused everyone to respond – "Let’s record it!" and they did. "To Return to You (Ho’omana Hawaii)" was aired all over Honolulu. Since then, June has not only begun to sing but has recorded several albums over the last few months, all of which are being extremely well received. Interviewed in Hawaii on the Mike Buck show, he called her voice "sensational" after listening to Handel’s Largo. Her latest CD, Songs of Love, which will be released in January 2004 includes an absolutely beautiful rendition of "Return to Sorrento" and "La Vie en Rose". The Christmas Together recording includes Ave Maria, beautifully sung with her warm, rich voice and O Holy Night in French, Silent Night in German, English and French and more much more.

June Simon’s voice has a beauty, warmth, maturity and clarity so unusual that you never forget it once you hear it. Perhaps it echoes her past suffering, her strength to face the future and her love of people and life because that is the feeling you get when you are bathed in its beauty and warmth. This is a Canadian artist who is truly bringing distinction to her country in a most wonderful way.

Album Description
This recording elevates the emotions within us and reconnects to the true inner values of living souls. Since excitement and challenge move the minds of modern man away from the solitude and security only love can best provide, do we find ourselves entangled when we lose this kind of love which elevates us into the heights of heaven. Love, alike faith, does move mountains, remaining the source of all life and allows us to reflect and improve our emotional state. This recording encompasses the everyday feelings of people and reminds us of some of the most wonderful tunes, touching on our modern time and also on the times which have passed us long ago. Love, longing and the feelings of separation right up to the moment of embrace, the return or even the loss of it, will never cease to corner our emotions, calm them or elevate them, depending on the sound of the music and the words delivered through it. In short, only the artists involved can best connect us! to the inner feelings we have when we fall in love or think of bygone days when love was kind to us. The sound tracks on Christmas Together return to traditional sounds, much more so appreciated when the voice of June Simon lifts the Ave Maria high up into the dome of any cathedral. Handel’s work, his Largo, from his opera Xerxes, has the sound of intimate sanctity within its measures. Here the reverberation of a coupled tone, distant but attached to the uniqueness of June Simon’s voice, melts into the feelings of this tune with deep emotions and appreciation of the composer’s efforts, making it one of the most beloved sounds of anyone who enjoys harmony within music. The unique quality of Winston’s guitar brings true beauty to the season together with the magical piano of the French born pianist Pierre Grill, ending this beautiful CD quite appropriately with White Christmas.

Christmas Together, Music, June Simon, Alternative, Beautiful Collection of Christmas songs sung by June Simon with warm soprano voice and delightful musical interpretations. Together she is joined by Winston Tan and his brilliant classical eight string guitar and Pierre Grill a pianist, Miscellaneous, Xmas Vocal

The Muppets have sung with so many people over the years, from Elton John to Tony Bennett, yet it has always seemed like their performances with John Denver were somehow the perfect match. Christmas Together is a delightful--what else?--sing-along collection of Christmas favorites as performed by Denver and the Muppets ensemble. While the usual suspects have more than their say here--Kermit, Miss Piggy--the standout piece is "Twelve Days of Christmas." What could be better than a Muppet a day? Denver leads the critters through a tender "Silent Night," which comes couched in a medley that closes with a rousing "We Wish You a Merry Christmas." "Deck the Halls" is equally raucous--about as raucous as Muppets can get. Listen for the subtle lyric adaptations and the witty exchanges between Denver and his minstrels. Definitely not just for kids. --Steve Gdula

Add fun to your family's Christmas time by listening to these wonderful and heartfelt songs from John Denver and the Muppets. These songs are for all ages. You'll even find yourself singing them during the rest of the year.

5 out of 5 stars Became a tradition.......2007-02-06

I watched the Muppet Show one Christmas long time ago. As I liked the Muppets anyway. Christmas with the songs sung in a different way but still christmas like. John Denver being one of my favorites too it was natural to like the show. Bought te LP at once and playing it as a tradition every christmas. As CD:s now are the format to use it was natural for me to get it as well so my daughter can take the tradition onwards. Just hope that the show will be on DVD too so you can see the joy that John felt doing this.

4 out of 5 stars muppets & John Denver.......2007-01-12

I had this as an album for years. We did an entire Christmas play to it for church when my son was 8. The only problem with the new CD is that it is missing 2 songs, one being a favorite, "Merry Christmas St Nick". also, Kermit's nephew Robin singing "when the river meets the sea". They should reproduce a CD in complete state, not leave off songs

This is an old production which my Down's Syndrone son watched years ago. He suddenly decided he wanted to hear it again, and I ordered it through Amazon. It arrived in record time at our house in Christchurch, New Zealand and one very happy fellow has played it continuously since then. His crit of the CD is "Awesome, Dad, its really Cool"

5 out of 5 stars The Price Club.......2005-04-28

"I am here," said Leontyne Price when interviewed as she opened the new Metropolitan Opera with Samuel Barber's underrated ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA, "and you will know that I am the best and will hear me. The color of my skin or the kink of my hair or the spread of my mouth has nothing to do with what you are listening to." Back in the 1960s Price was one of the greatest divas in all of opera, and it wasn't just her voice but her magnificent stage presence, combined with her social activism. All of the above come into play in this collection of secular songs and ditties, some of them traditional plantation chanties and others, art songs and a scattering of pop music. And some of them, like Gershwin's "Summertime," cross the ever-permeable boundaries between Broadway and classical. These recordings were made at different times in Price's career, and her voice, while always angelic, has different shadings and reaches a different range of timbre in each separate recording date, but there is no question that, as time goes by, she is able to impart a richness of life experience noticeably absent from some of her earlier work.

"Ave Maria" sounds heavenly no matter which way you slice it, and as for "I Wonder As I Wander," it brings tears to your eyes. If you have a heart that's beating you will be moved by this rendition. "Ein feste Burg" is pretty strong, but Price seems more comfortable with the traditional spirituals, though perhaps it is the slightly off-kilter sounds of the Ambrosian Singers (what a name) who back her up on many of these tracks, that detract slightly from the experience. Compare "Lead Kindly Light" for a clear sense of what constitutes authority vs. what is a wee bit overproduced. If you had this compilation, and perhaps one of Leontyne Price's Christmas albums, you could attain nirvana any time you wanted to, just flip a switch and close your eyes, let her lift you up on wings of song.

5 out of 5 stars A living legend.......2005-03-10

Leontyne Price (still alive) and already passing into immortality amongst vocal artists, both classical and popular. Leontyne Price stands at the pinnacle of her classical art, but those who only know her work in La Forza del destino or the Verdi Requiem are in for a heart rending treat with this album where Leontyne Price goes home to her roots in Mississippi and gives an unabashed account of the classic spirituals she sang as a young woman. Like John Mc Cormacks rendering of Irish songs there is a personal longing and devotion expressed here that reveals a side of the artist not known in the bulk of their "classical" repetoire. A sense of going home like Citizen Kane's rosebud, or as Dorothy Gale observes at the end of the Wizard of Oz "everything I could ever have wanted was right in my own backyard "

1 out of 5 stars not your daddy's old timey spiritual.......2004-06-23

Agreed this is a good cd for a beautiful voice, but this is not, repeat not, for someone who wants to hear that old-timey religious fervor that you think of when you've been to a Black Baptist hand-clapping, standing, swaying, and singing service.

5 out of 5 stars Immaculate Vocals of Leontyne Price.......2003-12-31

IMMACULATE, SUPERB vocal range and style! There's no other words that can complement Miss Leontyne Price's vocal arrangements. Miss Price's voice is strong, and shrills very nicely to the instruments played on many songs listed on this double CD which is a joy to treasure; every song listed are songs I was raised to hearing and singing. Miss Price is the reason why many of these songs remain in popularity and presently used. Miss Leontyne Price has been incredible in many of her past performances. This is my fourth CD of Miss Price and I am glad to own this particular CD forever and ever. Many thanks to the executors who found this remarkable album and upgraded it to a CD format! **Angi**

4 out of 5 stars Great Gospel Stuff.......2001-04-12

This is a great CD. The only problem I have with it is that on some of the selections there is a boy's choir screaming in the background, and this takes away (a bit) from her performance. That said, her best selections are those that are either unaccompanied or those where her voice is not buried. Songs that strike me are - His Name So Sweet, He's Got The Whole World, Were You There, I Wonder as I Wander, Lift Every Voice and Sing, and my all time favourite Summertime. Enough said.

I am thankful the people reissued this CD with the tracks that were cut from the previous version! It certainly made my Christmas to hear John Denver teaming up with the Muppets. I suppose John and Jim Henson are having quite the time in Heaven since their passing many years ago. This is a wonderful CD for the kid in all of us!

4 out of 5 stars Denver & the Muppets make Christmas come alive.......2007-02-01

This is one of my favourite Christmas albums of all time. We had a copy of the cassette many years ago {which went missing) so I had to get a copy of the CD when it became available. I'm not disappointed. Denver remains one of the great musical poets of our time and coupled with the endearing muppets provides for a warm musical feast. I particularly like The Twelve Days of Christmas and Silent Night is one of my alltime favourite versions of this classic carol. Goodnight Kermie; Goodnight John!

5 out of 5 stars Superb! As Always, superb!.......2003-12-27

There's not enough words that can express how wonderful Miss Jessye Norman's vocal talent is. What a wonderful opera diva! I thought the George Bizet's Carmen (CD) was magnificient but then when I got this (CD), I was thrown back. The range and style in "Ave Maria" is splendid, so is "Let's Break Bread Together," "Amazing Grace," and many more songs found on this CD. Miss Jessye Norman, Ms. Leontyne Price, Miss kathleen Battle, Miss Joan Sutherland are top opera divas on my list. So you know I have a fine taste of hearing great vocals; you can't go wrong in purchasing this CD. It's a treasure to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars Uplifting and Timeless.......2003-09-08

Jessye Norman is one of my favorite opera singers. I hope that she may release another CD of Gospel songs very soon. We have waited too much!!! How about to revisit Marian Andersons' Gospel recordings!!!

5 out of 5 stars Why was I such a fool?.......2003-06-17

Okay, if you look at my other recommendations, you'll see that I'm a conservative. So, before my full embrace of the classical vocal artistry, and when I was just beginning to grasp politics (I'm only 21 now), I heard a beautiful voice and rejected it because it was singing at the inauguration of Bill Clinton.

I've learned a little since then. I've learned to ignore an artists political leanings, because they don't tell you much about quality (contrast the Republican South Park creators Matt Parker and Trey Stone with the Democrat Robert Redford). I've also learned to (sometimes) listen to the recommendations of friends. And well, after a friend heard me laud Reneé Fleming, Kathleen Battle, and Leontyne Price, she told me I needed to try Jessye Norman. So I did.

Jessye Norman here offers here own takes on many of the most-loved (i.e. trite) pieces in the religio-classical tradition. She renders one of my own favorites, "O Divine Redeemer", with great beauty. When other reviewers mention shivers on the spine, I can only nod. As a wonderful introduction to Ms. Norman, the great spirituals and hymns, or repudiation of foolish artistic discrimination, I highly recommend this CD.

5 out of 5 stars How sweet the sound!.......2003-01-23

Heaven must be missing an angel because she's here with us-singing on this disc. This is arguably one of the most beautiful recordings of sacred music ever made. Ms. Norman brings a lifetime of experience to this genre-she joined her church choir at 4! The warm acoustics make you feel like you are sitting in your favorite pew-albeit with a magnificent vocalist in the choirloft. Jessye has conquered the world's opera houses in the most demanding roles-one of which garnered her a fifty-five minute standing ovation (Salzberg). But she is most resplendent in the music of her youth. The majestic voice soars over the orchestra and chorus to deliver the full beauty of the music. Ms. Norman also performs selections with organ accompaniment-appropiate since her voice has often been compared to the king of instruments-"with all the stops pulled out"! You will hear why she is one of the most acclaimed recitalists of our time. Her expansive vocal range encompasses every nuance of the music heard here. We are taken on a journey through the entire spectrum of the category starting with a classical Mass, moving through an American spiritual and finishing with a Christmas carol that will keep you in a festive mood year 'round. Amoung the gems on this disc is an Ave Maria sung in German and arguably the most powerful solo recorded performance of "The Holy City" ever. If you want to hear what the heavenly choir sounds like before entering the pearly gates-listen to this disc. Brava Jessye!

5 out of 5 stars incredibly moving.......1999-02-25

I was listening to the local public radio station when they played the Sanctus and I literally had to drive off the road to listen it was so powerfyl and moving. Jessye Norman is a national treasure.

Amazon.com essential recording

Sir Thomas Beecham's Messiah has become notorious among baroque purists (like this writer) for embodying the worst excesses of pre-1960 Handel performance: ponderous tempos, stentorian opera singers, huge lumbering choruses and orchestras, crashing cymbals, clanging triangles.... Well, we'll need a new straw man: this performance is WONDERFUL. Jon Vickers and Giorgio Tozzi negotiate Handel's writing surprisingly well; Jennifer Vyvyan takes to it naturally. The chorus and orchestra (yes, including trombones, tuba, triangle, and cymbals) may obscure the part-writing, but they fill the music with power, grandeur, and faith. If Mozart could re-orchestrate Messiah, why not Beecham? This may not be Handel's Messiah as such, it may even be a period piece itself--but it's magnificent. --Matthew Westphal

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Beecham's noisy Messiah.......2006-12-23

Here's the famous Messiah from Thomas Beecham and forces that uses crashing cymbals, enhanced timpani and brass to make it sound like a collusion between classical forces, a rock band and Canadian Brass. Listen to second CD excerpt from "Hallelujah!" for the opening cymbal crash to get an idea of what's going on.

This performance has been debated for 40 years as to whether it is musically adept, musically correct, an exemplar of the English choral tradition, or just a big old batch of fun at Handel's expense. I first owned this during a time when I also owned a recording Handel's "Royal Fireworks Music" featuring 40 woodwinds. The two made roughly an equal amount of noise.

There isn't much question this performance is completely out of step with the way Handel is performed in most venues today. Check out the wonderful Jon Vickers' highly operatic opening aria, "Comfort ye", then compare that to any leaned-out period group you've heard. You'll get another idea of the dimension of Beecham's project.

While not on the agenda of the Flat Earth Society, the only real interest in a performance like this -- especially having to endure it on three CDs when just about everyone else puts it on two -- is nostalgia or history, whichever happens to be the case for you.

My personal favorite version is in the 4-CD box of "Messiah" and "Israel In Egypt" where Andrew Parrott leads his Taverner Choir & Players and some of the best early music singers including Emma Kirkby, Emily van Evera, Margaret Cable, David Thomas, and Joseph Cornwall. HIs Messiah isn't perfect -- it uses a countertenor for a bass in one aria -- but it is more moderate than most PPP recordings and has a wonderful romantic edge to most of the score. It comes with a top notch recording of "Israel in Egypt" and still costs less than the Beehcham.

5 out of 5 stars The Big Victorian Handel 'Messiah': Indulge Yourself!.......2006-12-16

We live in an era when purity of intent and respect for composers' works is at an all time high. Not only are we blessed with superb 'authentic' performances on period instruments and with small choruses and countertenors and state of the art bel canto singers for Handel's evergreen "Messiah", there are many superlative recordings that are as polished as any one work on current recordings. Supposedly we are hearing Messiah the way Handel envisioned it. Perhaps so, but who is to say that had Handel the resources available today he wouldn't have jumped for joy at the drama of the old British Choral Societies version that Sir Thomas Beecham conducts on this anything but dusty recording from many years ago. The 'Old School' had its good points.

Beecham goes all out with an orchestration, while attributed to Sir Eugene Goosens is also probably some of Beecham's own inimitable tinkering, that adds instruments not only in numbers but also in color and depth of sound. Winds double strings, percussion includes the full battery instead of just tympani, the big cello and viola sound stand equally with the big violin sound, etc. The chorus is huge, and while this allows the big dramatic moments to be intense, the fine diction Beecham demanded remains solidly intact.

The soloists are in an operatic class of their own. Jennifer Vyvyan and Monica Sinclair were major singers when this recording was made and their singing is big and well ornamented. Jon Vickers and Giorgio Tozzi bring Verdi into the room and he is a welcome visitor to Beecham's vision of this work.

For this listener, who prefers the 'correct, authentic' performance, this recording and others even older that celebrate the BIG Messiah are a delight. And that just proves that performance standards, no matter the interpretation of the conductor, are paramount: Beecham gives a solid, convincing interpretation to the operatic Messiah. It is lush, and huge, and absolutely wonderful to hear again! Grady Harp, December 06

5 out of 5 stars Comfort Ye!.......2006-10-30

If your not familiar with "Messiah" don't let the reviews scare you - this is certainly a great choice for your first or only recording. There is a lot of feeling in the playing and singing, and i feel it is quite respectful not only of the composer, but the subject matter. It includes a booklet with all the lyrics, and an essay by Beecham himself about the piece. It is a complete recording, with a "bonus cd" of extra verses not usually performed (as explained in the essay). The audio quality is great for the time it was recorded. Its much more worthy to be listened to and contemplated than to be put on as backround music at Christmastime. The price is certainly reasonable in light of the quality of the performance.

3 out of 5 stars Familiarity hasn't bred much affection.......2005-11-02

I first became acquainted with this recording at the tender age of 12 when I received the original Soria edition as a Christmas gift. I remember being intensely disappointed at what seemed to me then as more circus than music. Time has mellowed that negative reaction and gives a more balanced assessment of Beecham's achievement - I bought the CD reissue after all. It still doesn't inspire much affection in yours truly although I can appreciate the soloists' contributions, particularly Tozzi. The lamented Vyvyan was in better voice with Boult. Here she has a rapid vibrato and a curious way of articulating the high notes. The orchestrations seem to maintain more of the clarity of the writing by concentrating on the bass and the top without clogging up the middle voices in the manner of the Victorians. There are three pieces where it just doesn't work at all to these ears: the brassy "All we like sheep," "Hallelujah" (which summons visions of Fucik's 'Entry of the Gladiators' every time I hear it), and the disintegration of the obbligato trumpet into flute noodlings in "The trumpet shall sound," in a lightweight performance that is at odds with the grandeur of the text. I'll also admit that the splashy brilliance of "For unto us a Child is born" and the surging drama of "Surely, He hath borne our griefs" are very satisfying.

In the forty some recordings I own (and the many performances I've attended) there's no best and no definitive. This is one I respect but don't care to hear very often.

3 out of 5 stars Thanks to Jon!.......2005-03-08

This recording is worth having first of all beacause of the credible singing of Jon Vickers! Yes, he really sings on the words. The "Comfort Ye" and "Every valley..." have a knew dimension after Jons reading of the score. Of course I know that in tradition we want a very much more lyrical voice to this masterpiece. But he's not alone here, and now we are already into the problem; the choir! It's just terrible, yes terrible!
I'm just ending up with "Thanks to Jon!"

Short and Sweet!

In case you're wondering why this is only going for $2. for new copies from secondary dealers, is because it wasn't worth the $16.00 it originally was priced at! What a SHOCK when I got this home from the store and put it in my machine!

I gave it away in a grab bag at work!

All I can say is: "Miss Horne, I am so sorry that you allowed this to be released...it's worse than the stuff that Callas/Di Stefano did at the end."

5 out of 5 stars Finally a Messiah with fervor!.......2005-10-20

I've hunted a thrilling performance of The Messiah through 240 versions so far. This is the best I've found. Some are self-conscious, dutifully singing as instructed. Some are almost childish in their lilt. Some are overblown with so much bombast that you can barely hear the heart of the music. Some are concentrated on faithfulness to the original instruments. If you want a performance that will make you shiver with the power and joy of the music, this is the one. The singers are singing about GLORY. They sound as if they are ecstatic. The musicians are at one with the music and they create a virtual cathedral wherever this CD is played, just close your eyes. Or, let your own imagery, be it celestial, or of great oceans...carry you away.

5 out of 5 stars Great recording!.......2003-09-22

There are so many performances of the Messiah out there that it is very difficult to point to a difinative one, but I'd put this in the catagory of the "very good" ones. As other reviewers have said, every performance is different and has its own character. Each has stronger and weaker points. Here the conductor and musicians have made good, solid musical choices. There is an amazing attention to detail which is not so obvious the first listen through but which makes the piece shine. The tempos seem to be right on, and there is no frivolous over-embellishment by the soloists. There is no attempt to be showey. The dramatic dynamics in the first section of the overture are interesting, but seem to work after you hear it a few times. This performance also includes sections which are often omitted (Second half of "He shall feed his flock," "Thou art gone up on high," "Great was the company of the preachers," and "Death where is thy sting"). I prefer the more intimate quality of a small ensemble of musicians to the mega-performances by the London Philharmonic, Vienna State Opera Orchestra, etc.. As with this performance, the smaller group lends a clarity to the music, where the larger ensembles can get a little "muddy" at times. Just my personal preference. Overall, this is a very good performance, and certainly the low price (being on the Naxos lable) makes this a clear choice.

2 out of 5 stars Good and Bad.......2000-04-09

I was more interested in "The Messiah" for the religious content than as a music critic, but this was too much. The strings are tinny. The orchestra is plodding. The soloists and choir are thankfully very good and seem to understand the meaning of the words. It is a shame the sound mix is uneven. The male parts come across loud and clear, but the poor women. For instance, No. 9 Oh thou that tellest..., the soloist sounded like she was singing in an echo chamber far from the mike. This is one of the most disappointing versions of "The Messiah" I have heard in a long time.

4 out of 5 stars This is a great recording!.......2000-02-11

I was really surprised with the new that the Messiah's New World premiere was held at Trinity Church in October 1770, twenty-eight years after it was written. This fact only will make one proud in having this CD among his collection.

Anyhow, this is nothing more than a historic detail and would not count if this recording had not an outstanding first-rate ensemble of singers. Without doubt there is no definitive version of Messiah. Each one has its own distinctive touch and feeling and exploring it is always a pleasant journey through imagination.

As stated by the conductor: "we must concede that performing Messiah with twenty singers and an appropriately balanced instrumental ensemble represents, at best, an imperfect comprimise", it will be easy to understand that this recording does not stand among the greatest and will probably carry some imperfections. I will mention two that kind of disppointed me a little bit. The Overture and the Chorus Worthy is the Lamb, for some reason misses the habitual vigor and strenght. Everything else is great and this is definitely a worth buying.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Glorious!.......2003-01-31

I have listened extensively to more than 15 recordings of Handel's Messiah, and have performed it several times as a tenor soloist, and I must say that this rendition has the combination of technical mastery, musical drama, and historical accuracy that renders it overall the best recording I have heard to date. Davis's solid, but not overly large orchestral forces balance the forte of the choral passages wonderfully, and he also makes use of the organ, which conductors all too frequently overlook - it absolutely makes all the difference, especially in numbers like the Hallelujah Chorus, which is done to perfection and which sold me on this recording in the first place. The soloists are fantastic; I wish the tenor (John Aler) had better command of dynamics and spent less time singing under pitch (I, being a tenor myself, notice these things far too much), but the overall effect of his voice is warm, burnished, and very well modulated. Battle, Quivar, and Ramey deliver superstar performances from superstar singers, and the Toronto Mendelssohn Chorus, while a little quiet for its size, nonetheless delivers the chorales with a precise strength that's refreshing, especially if you've grown up listening to the Mormon Tabernacle Choir wade around neck-deep in the choruses. Worth every penny you spend.

1 out of 5 stars Excellent music (if you can hear it).......2000-12-20

The CD has some extremely good renditions of The Messiah. I have to admit that the performance was indeed some of the best I have heard. Unfortunately it was recorded poorly. So poorly that my CD player had to be turned up to full to hear it and then I had the static to contend with. As good as an album as it is, it was lost due to to bad recording techniques. Take my advice and spend a few extra bucks on another Handel CD.

5 out of 5 stars Handel's Messiah highlights.......2000-08-24

Kathleen Battle does not dissapoint on this one. Her crystal clear and purely gracefull voice does handel great justice. Brovo !!!
