Pilotram, a solo electronic project from Duane Pitre (Camera Obscura, ILYA), is not the kind of music you can easily absorb. It flows like cool water around you, endlessly lucid and pure and refreshing, yet slides off your skin in drops before you can have a single thought about it. Its five tracks exist only when they're playing, a series of long, reverberating, slow-changing tones that feel like a dream or meditation…

"Caspian Airwaves" is perhaps the most propulsive, starting with almost a minute of a single buzzing tone, gradually building and barely hiding the more musical notes beneath it. Ethereal tones, like disembodied voices or rubbed glasses, haunt the upper ranges, while the jagged rasp anchors the piece. There is more anxiety here than in later tracks, more narrative, more change -- but in listening, you are slowed down to Pilotram speed, a timeless, weightless state that allows you to experience the rest of the album. "Reflective 1" is an empty church full of pipe-organ tones, floating free of melody or rhythm for ten meditative minutes. Then "1635 Crossing", the CD's shortest piece, brings on the classics-referencing sound of bowed guitars, a warm, organic mesh of strings underlined by harpish runs of electronic tones. There are more string sounds in "Linear Intersection", though they are darker, more somber, more funereal in this longer piece.

We Must Sleep hits its apex in the 25-minute "Sacred Space", a slow, dreamy, allusive inward journey that evolves in almost imperceptible ways, like clouds changing shape or plants growing. Organs, flutes, guitar strings and voices drift by in waves, building and receding. By this point, you've stopped looking for milestones -- you're fully adjusted to Pilotram's perception of space and time, ready to experience pure, beautiful sounds, one by one, until they're done.
