Customer Reviews:
love songs easy to listen too.......2007-05-07
I love a classical voice singing this type of mustic, or sacred (from the operas (in English), or, out of print sacred. Wish I could find a source for some of my old tapes (some recorded from 78s) of artists like Jerome Hines (Holy City, 1962-3, 78 record I transferred to tape), Russel Davis (1970 or early 8os record I coped, of tape my Dad had copied), William Harness, Kathleen Battle, etc. etc. I enjoy a wide range of music, but had operatic training, so understand the requirements for superior vocal skill. John Denver had much of the quality. Music for me is part of the fabric of life.
This is an oldie but a goodie!.......2006-11-09
One of his first albums of "popular" songs and one of the best of the songs we have loved for years with a fresh, new Domingo treatment. Just as his album with John Denver was a something new for him, these songs are out of the opera world. You'll never hear any of them performed by anyone up to the "gold standard" of Domingo. That being said, I love this album, but - the accent gets in the way on the English songs. You have to be able to accept the accented English and just listen to the gorgeous voice singing some very romantic songs. I highly recommend!
Great for boring candlelight dinner or quick ride in an elevator........2006-10-31
As much as I enjoy listening to Placido Domingo's popular recordings this is not one of his best performances. Missing the full-blooded belting that can be heard on his other albums ("Be My Love" for example). The orchestration is very mediocre and uninspired.
For a romantic mood, "Perhaps Love" (simply fabulous) is much better choice.
Beautiful music.......2006-02-23
I have been looking for this title for a long time...in all the wrong places.
A Valentine's Day Gift for all time.......2005-02-02
If you truly want to touch someone's heart, give this as a Valentine's gift. I received the CD last year and I love every minute. It makes a loving gift of one of the greats. With such a long career you would think that Placido would disappoint. So far it hasn't happened. This year my honey and I will see him in concert! Another Valentine's day wish come true.

Customer Reviews:
Beautiful!.......2007-04-24
I've owned this CD for several years now, and it definitely remains on my short, short list of favorites! The music is beautiful and contemplative, drawing the listener into the journey of migration undertaken by the birds who inspired it. Everything is amazing on it: the writing, the instrumentation, the vocals. This albumn is definitely not just for fans of the movie, but for anyone who loves slow, calming, thoughtful music.
Winged Migration CD.......2007-02-08
Awesome, for the most part- best after watching the documentary. A couple of songs had to skip through, but the rest is a good post movie mental review- watch the movie first...
Beautiful Soundtrack.......2007-01-06
I loved this movie and the soundtrack makes it ever better. I havent bought a CD in a while and this one is reasonably priced and rare.
WINGED MIGRATION.......2006-08-29
The movie is excellent. The scenery is breathtaking, but you actually feel like you are flying with the geese. Geese are amazing birds. A must see.
THE RIGHT MUSIC FOR THE RIGHT MOVIE.......2006-06-22
Even if you haven't seen the beautiful french documentary, you'll love this soundtrack. The score captivates listeners from the very beginning and the song "To Be By Your Side" by Nick Cave gives the very special mood that the movie requires. Bruno Coulais is the same composer from HIMALAYA, thus you may understand better the sort of music you're listening: half ethnic, half new age and totally haunting. Don't miss it.

this cd set is definately worth the money spent. i haven't heard some of the music before but was willing to give it a try.
Great Patriotic Music.......2007-02-21
Beautiful music perfect for feeling patriotic. Received CD promptly and in great condition.
A good choice of tunes with good quality.......2005-06-30
If you like military tunes and marches, this 2-CD is a good choice. The orchestration is good, it is well played and the quality of recording is good. If you like this kind of music, it is a good choice to buy.
Brilliant!!!.......2003-08-11
I have the CD at home and the songs sound fabulous. I've heard the Houston Symphony's version of the Star Spangled Banner many times on TV as this anthem has been used at sign-off (when this was happening). It's as powerful a version you'll hear. Probably the finest patriotic music CD you can find out there.
Best Patriotic Music I've Found.......2001-09-20
Loved the CD! I am buying it to use with a Musical Freestyle Ride for a Quadrille. A horse oriented endeaver. The music will be perfect to bring positive patriotism to fairs and fund raisers for NYC.

Album Description
CONRAD HERWIG NONET featuring PAQUITO D/RIVERA, BRIAN LYNCH, and DAVE VALENTIN
ANOTHER KIND OF BLUE THE LATIN SIDE OF MILES DAVIS
With Another Kind of Blue: The Latin Side of Miles Davis, trombonist Conrad Herwig reimagines one of the seminal albums in jazz history - timeless compositions crafted and showcased within the framework of Afro-Cuban and Afro-Caribbean rhythms. It is a companion piece to his pathfinding release, The Latin Side of John Coltrane, and it finds him reveling in the company of featured bandmates who draw inspiration and energy from the spirit of Miles. Selections include the entire Kind of Blue repertoire - including "So What," Freddie Freeloader," and "All Blues" - plus bonus track "Petits Machins" from Miles's Filles De Kilimanjaro. Group members include Mario Rivera, Edsel Gomez, John Benitez, Robby Ameen, and Richie Flores.
Customer Reviews:
Yeah........2006-12-10
Holy Crap! I really love this album, as I do the Latin Side Of John Coltrane album. I have to buy it again because I keep loaning it out... and I have yet to recieve it back. I can spend all day transcribing and put it on again when the girls come by at night (and no one complains.) I enjoy this album on a different level than Miles' version. The original I take with me alone to the proverbial desert island: I can't exist without it. This one, however, is for that island that's a little less desert and a little more party. The original is good aged scotch, 2 fingers worth straight up; Conrad's version I can liken to a mojito. And no cheap bacardi mojito... Nothing but the best. Havana club rum, soda, raw sugar, lemon, soda and mint leaves. Sorry, I'm rambling. Buy the album. I'm buying it again and I'm not loaning it out anymore. So don't ask for it, Jacob.

Well-Executed Sacrelige.......2006-02-01
It's a bold move to mess with one of the classics in the jazz canon like Kind of Blue. This album is a little hard to take on the first listen especially. It totally changes the feel of Miles' original. Instead of a laid back, cool modal setting, many of the charts turn into latin burners, a very odd shift. I feel like Kind of Blue could be put into a latin medium while still paying respect to the original groove that Miles established with his 1959 album. "All Blues" becomes an upbeat fiery tune, "So What" becomes a wild abandoned version of the cool laid back. If this album and the original were to be described in terms of color, they would be at opposite ends of the spectrum; Miles' album being blues and greens and purples while Herwig goes with more reds, yellows and oranges. Also, sometimes the improvisation feels a little inapropriate for the tunes. I felt like I was urged to be too technically impressed rather than impressed by the melodic creativity that made Miles' album famous. The most glaring wrong in an improvised solo was when "Tequila" was quoted in a solo on "Freddie Freeloader." Down right unacceptable.
Even though it seems like all I've done is complain, I still give this album four stars. The arrangements though far out of character are very intelligent and impressive. Every player on the album is an absolute monster and the material is well performed, just not well displayed. The most shining moment on this album is the ballad "Blue in Green." Despite the strange medium of latin grooves with such a classic album, its an album worth having around. Just a warning to Miles Davis fans that you may be upset by Herwigs heresies.
So, it's not Miles---SO WHAT?.......2005-02-17
It's Neo-Latin-BigBand-BeBop with only 9 guys (who sound like 20)...with fire and timbales and congas and dissonant pounding piano and cowbells...what else do you need? Oh, yeah, the arrangements are full of inventive "snappy" riffs. Enthusiasm abounds judging from the shouting. I saw most of this group in Milwaukee in August 04 in a small club and they blew out the walls.
Conrad's Second Latin Attempt.......2004-07-28
This latest CD by Conrad Herwig is very good, but something seems to be missing from it. Maybe it had been hyped up too much in my mind, but when I played the music, I felt like it was missing an element. An important element, sadly. Just like the Latin Side of John Coltrane album, I didn't hear as much inspired playing as I am accustomed to hearing on Herwig's albums. He certainly has set a high standard level for himself! I have seen Conrad Herwig live and was BLOWN AWAY. If you have the chance, I would suggest hearing him play at any price.
Back to this CD though... I think I was missing his compositional capabilities, although his arrangements are always strong. Regardless, this is a strong CD, and if it was the first CD I had heard by Herwig, I know that I would have been hooked on him forever. Unfortunately, I have heard many CDs by Herwig that had more inspired solos than this one.
Unkinda Blue.......2004-06-19
Perhaps if one has never heard Mile's original, this attempt might slip by. For those who know Kind of Blue, this CD is like someone trying to do a "latin" version of the Eiffel Tower. Rather than trying to push the originals through some kind of latin strainer, it would have been interesting to hear a fresh interpretation of the music.

not to great.......2007-04-04
We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.
Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22
I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.
You get what you pay for........2004-07-04
You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.
Now I know why there were no song samples to listen to ..........2004-07-04
I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.

Customer Reviews:
An album that will never get old.......2004-09-30
Kenton's arrangements in this particular album are among my favorites from his repertoire. While we've all heard Berstein's West Side Story tracks numerous times I'm sure (and if you haven't, they're certainly wonderful in and of themselves!), Kenton's interpretations are full of vibrant emotion. No matter how many times I listen to this album, each time brings out some of the most lavish flavors I've heard from a big band. Throughout the CD, you'll find yourself on a rollercoaster of mellows and climaxes that somehow makes the transitions so smooth you'll listen to it over and over....and over.....and over...
Never cool anymore........2002-10-09
When I bought this record in 1965 my father said he would kill me if I played that record again. But I kept playing it over and over again. Only our neighbours didn't liked this record. The mellophonium section is 5 stars. Arrangements 5.5 stars and the whole band is heavenly. I still have the original Lp in MONO and Stereo and the Cd version. It's a shame Stan Kenton didn't lived untill he was 90.
wow.......2001-12-27
This is absolutely one of the most innovative interpretations of an American classic you will ever hear. Even if you have no idea of the contribution of Stan Kenton, it is virtually impossible not to be thrilled with this recording. For fans of Kenton, fans of Bernstein or fans of band music this is a sure winner.
loud and boring.......2001-11-15
almost all the beauty of wss is lost.loud brass
work-not for indoor listening.couldn't give it away.
If only they had used this for the original soundtrack..........2001-07-19
Lovers of big band jazz and serious brass sections will truly enjoy this. You will recognize the melodies imediately, but you will be literally blown away by Kenton's orchestra. You won't hear the original soundtrack again without a small feeling of regret that these arrangements didn't make it into the movie...

Ximo Tebar by George Benson.......2005-08-29
Ximo Tebar by George Benson
Ximo is a new trailblazer for jazz guitar and a major new voice for the classic organ trio. He has a fresh approach to single-lines. His ideas are never boring and his powerhouse technique is inspiring. His destiny is apparent from the moment you here him play. The amazing thing is that Ximo was born and raised in Spain, which makes him a phenomenon.

Partner In Paradise.......2005-03-03
Bobby Darin's stint with Capitol records from 1962-1965 was during a changing time in American music. Big band swing was going out; and the Beatles were in. In recent years we've seen a resurgence of interest in this music with new young artists like Peter Cincotti & Michael Buble among others recording tributes built on this era. With the Kevin Spacey movie coming out about Bobby Darin, perhaps increased interest will be attached to this great singer. One professional reviewer said that Darin was not an original interpreter of music and paled next to Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett. Without taking anything away from other artists, I hear in Darin a quintessential performer. If there's any criticism of the disc, with 13 tracks all under 3 minutes long, the disc breezes by in a flash. However, there are some real delights here such as the big band arrangement on "Hello Young Lovers" with Darin's voice expressive & strong, "I know how it feels to have some wings upon your heels and to fly down the street in a trance, you'll fly down the street on the chance that you will meet & you meet her not really by chance." Rogers & Hammerstein's "This Nearly Was Mine" has a great horn chart as Darin sings about "One partner in Paradise." "Make Someone Happy" is a delightful track with Darin's voice belting out the melody about the jazz chart with some smoking sax. Cyndi Lauper recorded a Latin-flavored version of "On the Street Where You Live" on her recent "At Last" CD. Bobby Darin's version also sparkles with energy and the big band rocking out. Gershwin's "I Got Rhythm" that opens this set is also a delightful track with Darin bopping joyfully. On Duke Ellington's "I'm Beginning to See the Light," Darin swings & sways, raising the temperature of desire. Darin does Cole Porter's "All of You" with zest. Capitol has remastered the recordings so that the sound quality on the disc is exquisite. This is an excellent set that certainly swings from this past master! Enjoy!

Album Description
Blue Mongol recording is an extension of a 2004 concert that featured Rudd with Asian musicians from Mongolia, the mountainous country that lies between Russia and China, where the art of throat singing has flourished for thousands of years. That unique vocal tradition - called hoomei by the indigenous people -- consists of overtones and harmonic resonances created by channeling air through the human vocal folds and out through the lips, creating strange (to our ears) octaves, low drones, and high-pitched, woodwind-like tones, which enable the vocalist to sound more than one note at once (think Rahsaan Roland Kirk). The Mongolian musicians are lead by throat singer and multi-instrumentalist Battuvshin Baldantseren: a virtuoso on the limbe bamboo flute, Ikh Khur horse-head bass and khomus Jaw harp, singer Badma Khanda, Dmitry Ayurov on the Morin Khur horse-head fiddle, iochin dulcimer player Kermen Kalyaeva and Valentina Namdykova on the yatag zither and the lute! -like Khalmyk Dombr. Rudd calls their music "art folk, because it combines the sophistication of conservatory, western training with the indigenous performance style of their long history."
Customer Reviews:
He's at it again.......2005-10-15
Following up on the spectacular critical and commercial success of Malicool, a unique encounter between West African traditional kora-based string music and North American jazz, Roswell Rudd goes even farther out, melding Western improvisation with traditional Mongolian throat-singing and folk stylings.
And the results yield a unique amalgam, even more wonderfully strange than his previous effort.
For me, this intersection of various world folk musics with jazz sensibilities produces some of the most exciting music on the scene today. It started with Egberto Gismonti, continued with Andy Narell, and goes forward with Jan Garbarek, Omar Sosa, Safa, Peter Epstein, Miguel Zenon, Yusef Lateef, Lingua Franca, The Intercontinentals, Jenny Scheinman, Dhafer Youssef, Nguyen Le, Roberto Rodreguez, Jean-Pierre Mas, Rita Marcotulli, Vijay Iyer, Guillermo Klein, Pago Libre, Michael Wolff, Will Calhoun, Ben Allison, Fraser Fifield, and a host of others too numerous to name.
The key consists in retaining the authentic aspects of each music, even as both are decoded and put together in new and unforeseen ways.
Case in point: "Buryat Boogie," a fiftyish-sounding boogie-woogie seamlessly grafted onto the Mongolian steppes that comes out sounding both bizarre and completely familiar. The title cut clinches the deal. Here a traditional blues is placed in such an unlikely setting as to nearly deconstruct it, yet it all comes out as almost inevitable. Perhaps even more astounding and weirdly glorious is "American Round," an amalgam of "Swing Low Sweet Chariot," "Coming in on a Wing and a Prayer," and "Amazing Grace." Do you know of more evocative music? I don't. And I doubt I'll ever encounter it. And don't forget "Honey on the Moon," a Rudd composition that sounds so authentically eastern that one could hardly be blamed to think of it as a lost oriental folk classic.
Bottom line: Full monty mysterioso ur-folk magically melded with American jazz--something no person with minimal aesthetic sensibilities should miss. More advanced aesthetes will drop everything and purchase same post-haste.

Good listening.......2000-06-11
For years I listened to the theme music on Inspector Morse and wondered what it was. Now that Amazon makes it easy to track such things down, I know. These three albums (volumes 1, 2, and 3) combine Barrington Pheloung's wonderful theme and background music with Morse's favorites (be warned, we get into some opera here). The three volumes provide an excellent evening of classical music.
