Pop Vulture

About the Artist
If you listen to High Steppin' (1997), Pop Vulture (2000) or attend a Ghetto Monks' show and you're a member of the media, get set for your overtime pay to increase as you struggle after-hours to define the original, catchy tunes you've just heard (The Monks call it "runk," a mixture of rock and funk). For everyone else, you'll simply have discovered a new favorite band you can say you knew before the Rolling Stone and Spin covers. Formed in 1995 among the train yards and warehouses of Seattle's industrial district, The Ghetto Monks have since seen many successes. At Seattle's Tower Records, High Steppin' sold more copies than any other local independent release. Now, there's a new album on the market, Pop Vulture, released on Very Juicy Records. At KJR Sports Radio 950, the Monks are currently the official house band, where they perform the theme song and bumper music for the "Groz with Gas" show, airing weekdays from 3-4 p.m.
The Ghetto Monks have played large outdoor festivals like "The Bite of Seattle" and KISW's "Pain in the Grass." They finished as finalists in CDNow's "1998 Unheard? Contest" and placed second in Disc Makers' "Best Unsigned Band Contest." They've also opened for national acts, including Erykah Badu. And now they're beckoning you!
Band members: Wanz -- Lead vocals
Mike "The Kitchen" Kirby -- Keyboards, vocals
Jim Venn -- Guitar
B.J. Poe -- Bass, vocals
Steve Thomas -- Drums
Mexico Dan -- Interpretive Dance & Psychomusical vibe

Long after the Alan Parson Project has disbanded, I have
discovered Vulture Culture. Wonderful, meaningful lyrics.
A must have.
Superlative Remastering.......2007-03-31
The sonics on this remastered disc are a little better than the newly remastered "Eye in the Sky". Probably because this LP came out a few years later, and I believe this is an import from Germany. Hawkeye is the cherry of the set. Clean, crisp, full sounding. I only wish this would come out in hi-rez 5.1 multichannel sound. All songs by Alan Parsons should be experienced in surround.

Not their best, but pretty damn good.......2006-11-02
A little disappointing to see Powderfinger fall into such a formulaic way of writing songs - and this album is not nearly as adventurous as Internationalist or Oddessy. But compared to most rock being produced, this is miles ahead of the pack, and it's money well spent. My favorite track was 'stumblin' by a country mile - absolute ripper of a song. No bad songs on the album, either. Buy it!
got the finger on the pulse.......2006-06-11
i have been a powderfinger fan for 5 years and cannot understand why they have not had hits in britain, maybe they are like a good wine rather than a can of warm fosters! brilliant last 3 albums, more more more!
An awesome album. Half the tracks are EXCELLENT!.......2006-03-03
After hearing this CD many many many times, in my opinion, the strong tracks on this album are: Love Your Way, Sunsets, Don't Panic, Roll Right By You, How Far Have We Really Come?, Pockets, and A Song Called Everything.
_______________________
HERE ARE THE FOUR SONGS THAT I CAN'T GET ENOUGH OF:
1) My favourite track is "Love Your Way". I think the WHOLE SONG is exceptionally good. It's hauntingly beautiful. It's one of my all-time favourite songs. Sometimes it sends shivers down my spine... here are some of the lyrics:
"And if I prove no good here I'll skip to where I should
It's only an imaginary vigil that we keep
You salvage what you need I'll take the love you leave
I love your way
I can't explain
What made me change
I'm wading in deeper ever deeper as I go
I drown the whole idea as I drift away from you
It's only and imaginary vigil that we keep
You salvage what you need I'll take the love you leave
And as the memory gathers dust, buried in its crust
Are the remains of what we've done and the seeds of what we just begun
And the city glow well it pulses on to the city hum"
2) The next consistently good song (for me) is "Roll Right By You". It is one of the more dynamic songs, and for that I like it. I love the lyrics to this one, for example:
"Are you in the situation to decide whether you really care?....... C'mon you know It's hard to complain about the way you live....... Just think, If the same thing happened to you, would you be, would you be, happy to walk in my shoes?....... I'm already tired of your chronic compassion fatigue....... Do you have the information to decide whether you really care.....
And then just before the 2:40 minute mark, one of the band members pulls off a guitar riff that would rival that of Slash from Guns N Roses! I like it! I LIKE IT!!
3) I absolutely LOVE the first minute of "Pockets", with the initial melodies & when he sings: "By now you know that I never arrived. I was too tired to move. I was gonna invent an elaborate excuse but I'm tired of them too". I could listen to that over and over and over again. Repeatedly. (and I have done) After than the song changes dramatically. It has sections that remind me a little of another one of their songs "thrilloilogy". I love the many distortion effects when he sings "I want you to staaaay... staaaaaaaay". People look at you strangely when you attempt to sing those lines on the street! HA HA HAAA!
4) A song called everything. I think the catchiest lines of this track have got to be: "I'll be your pawn, I'll be your king. I'll bear your scorn, I'll wear your ring." Ya gotta love that stuff. I love the last minute of this song too, it's a super-great ending to the album!
The thing I love about this band are that all the members are obviously super-talented. The lead singer, drummer, the guitarist & the bass guitarist are all just awesome. I think they have an original style, hell I think they've almost reinvented music.
Anyway, I am an Australian, currently living in another country, and whenever I start to feel homesick, I listen to THIS music and no other, and I *instantly* feel better. Thanks very much to all the members of Powderfinger for your truly excellent music. You are an inspirational band, you really know how to express your true-to-heart feelings to the rest of us - very well done! And I for one can identify with a lot of your lyrics... thanks again! YOU LOT ROCK!!
Wow, amazon really botched this tracklisting........2005-06-10
This album is awesome. Everyone knows that. However, the real reason for writing this review is to correct the HORRENDOUS tracklisting error.
First of all, there are 11 tracks.
1. Rockin' Rocks
2. (Baby I've Got You) On My Mind
3. Since You've Been Gone
4. Love Your Way
5. Sunsets
6. Don't Panic
7. Stumblin'
8. Roll Right By You
9. How Far Have We Really Come?
10. Pockets
11. A Song Called Everything
Since I pointed out this huge error, amazon can just repay my service by giving me every single cd I want for free.
AWESOME ALBUM FROM THE BOYS FROM OZ!.......2005-02-01
Vulture Street is an excellent album, and in my opinion, better than some of Powderfinger's previous efforts, although it all depends on taste. If you prefer slower songs, such as those on their older albums, then you might not like this album as much (although there are a few slower songs on Vulture Street). However, if you prefer something with a bit more punch, then i highly recommend this cd, whether you are already a fan of Powderfinger, or if you have a love of rock. This cd has cool guitar riffs and solos, and the majority of songs have an upbeat vibe (regardless of their lyrical themes). Songs range from slow to reasonably fast, so there is a nice mix. This album gives the band a chance to truly show their instrumental skills, and they don't disappoint. This album is a little different from their previous work, but it still feels familiar, which is a good thing. The change is neither good or bad, meaning that if you liked Powderfinger before, you should like this album. I highly recommend this album, as you can listen to it from beginning to end without skipping any undesireable tracks, a quality which is often hard to find with most albums. Buy it!

Days are Numbers is a ballad par none.......2007-06-24
I must say that "Days Are Numbers" is an incredible ballad. The harmonies (like when they hit 'Some-day' in this song, are just drop dead gorgeous. The lead is soft and perfect, the lyrics hauntingly true to my own life, and this is one of the most played slow songs of my iTunes these days. Call it perfect pop, but it's just a smooth beautiful song in my opinion. Tell me true, if a great friend asked you to slow dance to this song, in a darkened hall with lights above, wouldn't you just go on and on ?
Not my favorite Project album, but it's not my least favorite either.......2006-05-06
I just listened to this the other day after not hearing it for maybe eight years or so, and I appreciate it now more than ever. This is a much softer Project album than many that came before, but that doesn't mean it's bad by a long shot. There are five or six Project albums that are worse than this. This is just a beautiful album and I use to return to VULTURE CULTURE more than some of the other Project albums. The album closer "The Same Old Sun" is probably tied with "Silence and I" and "Old and Wise" as my favorite Parson's song. Don't listen to the reviewer who said that this is the worst Parson's album because it isn't, and even if it was the worst one it's still a great album. Don't hesitate in buying this gem.
Despite what people say, a strong album.......2006-01-15
No matter what any review will say, this is yet another strong Parsons' album. It followed Ammonia Avenue, which gives Vulture Culture extra points for being way better than its predecessor. The album opens with Let's Talk About Me, perhaps the best song on the album. It focuses on people's obsessions with themselves to the exclusion of others.
Following the opener is the worst song on the album, Seperate Lives, which is probably also the song that fits the overriding concept of the album the least. Still, it isn't bad, just not great. Days are Numbers is next, and while it is a very good ballad, it doesn't cut it compared to many earlier Parsons' ballads (or later [limelight], for that matter).
Sooner or Later is the next weakest song on the album, but it is still an enjoyable song. Vulture Culture fits the concept the best, but the type of music is not particularly my favorite. Still, it is yet another strong track on this album. Hawkeye, the only instrumental, is not, as some reviewers may claim, Parsons' best instrumental (Lucifer and I Robot take #s 1 and 2), as it is too repetive, but it still adds to the album as a whole.
Following Hawkeye is the only song that competes with Let's Talk About Me. Somebody Out There is a marvelous song about identity theft (listen to the chorus) that is excellent musically and lyrically. Finally, the album ends with The Same Old Sun, another ballad that falls about where I put Days are Numbers, good, but not up to usual standards.
All in all, this album is very strong, with each track being worth listening to. The collective value of the album is, as with all true concept albums, greater than the sum of the parts. This CD is well worth owning.
Alan Parson CD's Are Just Cool! 5 Stars! Definetly!.......2006-01-06
This is the best album of Alan Parson I have listened to so far. I'm not too big of a fan of Alan Parson but I borrowed this CD and I just loved all the songs in this! But in one CD, there are only a few songs so I hope that there were more songs in one CD.
This CD, overall doesn't have a noisy or scary or weird song at all. Although the picture on the front makes it look weird. There are really easy listening and most of the time you can catch what he's saying. Here's is tracks:
1. Let's Talk About Me- The first part is weird in this song. You hear these two drunk guys talking about...ball game (?). The chorus is very catchy and nice
2. Separate Lies- This song is kinda quiet compared to the first song. Not too quiet.
3. Days Are Numbered (The Traveller)- This kinda sounds like Separate Lies but this is yet another nice song. The lyrics are very interesting
4. Sooner or Later- Ah, my favorite song in this album. This song sounds like Separate Lies and Days Are Numbered. Some songs of Alan Parson sounds alike.
5. Vulture Culture- This song first sounds creepy but later on it lightens up. This song doesn't sound like any song in this album. The first four songs sound light and happy but this one sounds a bit rather dark.
6. Hawkeye- Aaaah~ This is a very cool instrumental song. The tamberine and of course the instruments too sound really cool. The drums sound cool too.
7. Somebody Out There- The first part is quiet then the chorus becomes abit louder.
8. Same Old Sun- This is a nice quiet song. It first sounds kind of sad and turns happy later on. The lyrics are nice in this song.
Vulture culture was a transition.......2005-11-28
A transition from the style of Eye and Ammonia, this disc foretold the musical style that was to follow in '85 with Stereotomy. If you listen to the title cut, it really has an 'Urbania' feel to it even though it's not an instrumental song. It's actually one of the best Lenny Zakatek tunes in the Parsons catalog. There is a shift apparent on this disc and I believe it was much needed and well done. The only song that doesn't score big is ironically Hawkeye, the lone instumental. Usually the Parsons instrumentals are the best reason to pick up the newest disc, that is not the case with this disc. Still, I do enjoy VC and it is probably in the top 5 of my fave Parson's discs.

Introspect and Extrovibrations.......1999-06-13
Have you ever heard a CD that so accurately reflects your moods that it changes with them? Lying motionless in the middle of the floor, letting the melodies and percussion swirl right through you.....Tip-toe motion, spinning and flailing because only the music matters. It is lilting, blissful, soulful, serene, dance music and at once meaningful.
Undeniably genius...

Those guys are straight bad. .......2004-12-13
All I have to say is listen to pinata and think about what a pinata is. It's a shell filled with glorious joy in the middle. And nobody does this in songs except for them. As if their producers said you can't fit 15 songs onto this album, so you will have to fit 3 songs into one. And that's mean. So rock the vulture. Awesome album.
This band never got the recognition it deserved........2003-04-08
3 Lb. Thrill was the new identity for veteran alt-rockers Uncle Green. The clean slate could have helped them if the record company had cared at all.
I really enjoy this record as well as "Book of Bad Thoughts" and "What An Experiment His Head Was..." that they recorded under the Uncle Green moniker. The lyrics make you think a little, the guitar rock without being overly flashy, and they were one of the best live bands I've ever seen.
Miss you guys.
Vulture Rules.......2000-02-23
This is one of the better albums I have bought in a while. Not to hard not to soft. Great!
Nice change of pace from the usual........1999-02-09
I'm tired of the same old sounding r & r from what sounds to me like butt-kissing new kiddie bands. I like the depth of the lyrics. I caught the association between the Track "Born Again", and the lyrics about monkey in the tree. Pretty clever association to Darwin, and the God arguement.

At first I thought the album was alright. Good, but nothing great. I took a few more listens and it's really grown on me. Really good sound quality really brings the heaviness home. The riffs are definitly fatter, or at least more fatter than previous. No one particular track really stands out over the other, they are pretty much all good.
A fantastic evolution of Sourvein's style. I highly recommend it.

Yeah, I'm back and so are the Ghetto Monks. Ready to jump right to the top of the Amazon.com sales charts. You got a problem with that?
Well, apparently you do because you ain't buying this album yet. So whazzup? Why the heck not? If this isn't one of the 10 best albums you've ever heard then you are from Kent or something.
Kidding. Keep your Camaros up on blocks, guys. You won't be needing them to run me over just yet.
Listen to the Monks. Play with the Monks. Marry the Monks. Just buy the stinkin' album. You won't be sorry if you do, I promise, or I'll personally give you your money back.

Scarlet Symphony's VULTURE: Diverse songs and Phenomenal sound .......2005-08-09
This debut album by San Diego band Scarlet Symphony captures their intense, vibrant and explosive sound. There happens to be a lot of diversity in the songs throughout this album, but their phenomenal sound never fades. All of the songs seem to have a different feel and range from rock with touches of bluesy and jazzy sounds to borderline punk and a beautiful ballard in between. Each of these four Scarlet Symphony guys are a towering 6 foot 5 inches tall, and together deliver an explosion of music that could reach greater heights if given the chance. Since I have purchased a copy of Vulture almost a year ago, it has graced my CD players almost continuously. It seems every time I take it out to listen to other CDs in my music collection it makes its way back in; I still do not know how that happens! It has been played for at least hundreds and hundreds of hours - if CDs wore out my copy of Vulture would be out of commission already. I usually have a very short attention span when it comes to music and listen to wide varieties, but for some reason Vulture has latched on to me for dear life! I cannot seem stop listening to it, and I end up loving it more and more the more I listen to it. Who knows? You just may grow to feel the same way about Vulture once you give yourself the opportunity to give it a listen.

Powdies rock!.......2005-04-10
From one of the few 'yanks' that review powderfinger albums - I must say that after praising their past works, I only have 'VERY good' (vs excellent/awesome) praise for this one. The powdies can rock, for sure, but a fair few of the songs just left me kind of wanting...and I really didn't want to *feel* this way, so I listened to this CD at least 20 times before writing this review, and I still feel the same. Even the somewhat rocky 'treat me like a dog' from Odyssey would be a welcome addition to this ordinary set from a band who I think is...well...one of the best in the WORLD.
So, why do I give it 4 stars? Well, because Powderfinger at (in my opinion) their not-so-best, is still GREAT. What a pain in the butt I can be! But hey, when Bernard and the boys get going, it is hard to resist. 'Beaches', 'On my Mind' and 'Rockin Rocks' are awesome (and what other band can use words like 'lexicon' and get away with it), and yes the CD 'flows' very well from song to song. Guess I was just looking for some more/better slower numbers akin to Odyssey 5 and Internationalist, but heck, these superstars have the all the right in the world to do up a rocker CD like this one, and the stakes were high being the biggest thing since Vegemite in Australia...
For some reason, the Powdies are simply ignored by US radio (except maybe in college), and it is a shame. I think because they are not 'flavor of the month' musically, the US record producers just chose to ignore. The Oils had their chance, but faded into oblivion in the US because all the CD's after 'Diesel and Dust' were just tooo 'Australian'. Not knockin the legends, but more or less trying to make a point about the US music market - if it ain't what they want, you are OUT (hey, ask Jimmy Barnes/Cold Chisel, one of my hero groups of Aussie rock). Powderfinger, as great as they are, just don't seem to 'fit' into what the music industry is here (CDs and radio). Beats the s*** out of me....
OFF my soapbox, this CD is a welcome to those who thought they got a bit too soft on their previous CD. There are really no duds on this, just a flow of steady high-quality rockers. There are some mellow moments (How far have we really come), but the majority are rockers. Those looking for a generous sprinkling of "My Happiness" - stay away. The other main criticisms seem to rotate around the lack of diversity on this CD, and I would have to agree...but lack of diversity does not make this no less than 4 stars in my book. Anything they do is gold in my book!!
A gem.......2004-12-16
An absolutley cracking effort from Powderfinger.
It still surprises me that Jet, Franz Ferdinand and the Vines, as good as they are, have been propelled to superstardom and yet Powderfinger remain largely unknown. In my opinion Powderfinger are one of the world's finest rock bands; so - if you are looking for a bit of hidden secret and you like the abovementioned bands -then snap up this album.
What is their style? If you enjoy solid guitar based rock, where the instruments compliment the unique vocals of the lead man (rather then drown him out) - then you will love it. I would not describe their tracks as 'heavy' - although there are a number that are fast, aggressive and energetic (i.e. 'Baby I've Got You On My Mind') - there are also a few that are slower and more subtle (i.e. 'Sunsets'). But my favourtie would be 'Love Your Way' - great stuff.
I'd have to say that I agree with other reviews that state that this album does require you to listen to it a few times before you really get into it - but this has always been a strange quality of Powderfinger rather than a drawback. They seem to craft an entire album rather than develop a set of singles that get thrown together. There are some great bands out there whose songs have been catchy but for whatever reason their album does not end up in my regular playlist. This never seems to happen with Powderfinger.
As good as this albulm is, I believe their previous album Odyssey Number 5 is slightly superior. Both make my all time favourites list and I'd classify both as examples of that rare few that you can just put into your cd player, press play and listen from start to finish with no worries at all.
Do Yourself A Favour.......2004-11-27
Another cracking album from one of Australia's finest bands.
They manage to seamlessly mix melody and rock to produce a great listen of concert choruses.
Top Tracks - Rockin' Rocks and How Far Have We Really Come
The Singles - On My Mind, Love Your Way, Sunsets and Stumbling are all deserving of a seperate release.

Definitely Powderfinger's most satisfying album to date. Best songs are Sunsets and Love your way. This band is huge in Australia and deservedly so. I'm an Aussie and this is about the only Aussie group I've ever liked. 10 times better than Jet. Strong melodies, catchy, anthemic, classy rock. Bernard Fanning is a charismatic vocalist and this band is great live.
Great Aussie Rock........2004-08-16
I wouldn't give anything a perfect score, but if I could I'd give it 4.5 stars. It's an album I feel really grows on you after a few listens, particularly the singles.
Compared to Odyssey Number Five, it adheres more to Powder's rock leanings of past, but don't expect to hear a completely different band -- just good ol' rock tunes. From interviews, that's pretty much what they were aiming for, and how the title came about.
If rocks your thing, I don't think you can go wrong with this one. Best Aussie rock album of 2003 for me.
