    Product Description

For his 25th CD as Nocturnal Emissions, Nigel Ayers has created a work that balances noise and vocal samples against a wild array of loops and rhythm tracks. It's a tantalizingly spicy cocktail that sounds nothing like an out-of-control hip-hop dump truck being driven backwards through an octogenarian's barn dance. "Collateral Salvage" is beat-oriented toe-tappin' music constructed from hundreds of different samples of indie guitar-pop, interspersed with fragments of song and surreal speech. Strong bass lines run throughout, and the rhythms are a blend of funk and exotic eastern promise. Subtle tonalities, acoustic guitar flavors, swingin' saxophones, flutes and horns are piled high over tabla and soaring vintage analogue synthesizers. Mbiras mix with driftwood marimbas, wicky-wicky guitars and pitch-shifted sitars in a swirling belly-dance dub sock-hop. "Collateral Salvage" was inspired by the sounds of modern Morocco. Late at night, lying in a bath, listening to the output of three different nightclubs, each with their own blend of local music mixed with international pop hits, all in a constant struggle for dominance, with water running in and out of the ears. The resourcefulness of human endeavor in the Third World and its contrast with the luxuries and carefree wastefulness of the developed world provided the foundation for the album. This is the music of resistance against the constant war being waged by the powerful elite in rich nations against the poor. When Bush says "you're either with us or you're against us" Ayers replies "There is no separation. Social divides are socially constructed. A forgotten branch of the avant-garde once suggested that art can direct thought along new lines and enable us to generate more positive patterns of social behavior."

4 out of 5 stars Hmmm... I like it. I like it alot........2004-05-25

I bought this album a while ago and I didn't like it so much on the first or second listen. But now that it's been a while I can say I really enjoy it. Personally, I think 'Viral Shedding' is a much stronger release by Nocturnal Emissions. Though it's a very different album from 'Drowning In A Sea Of Bliss'. The only thing that I don't like so much is the second side. Which is where you can see where they/he started to make more structured songs (like the ones seen on Viral Shedding). Granted some parts are really neat good, there are some others that aren't so good and because the songs are not individually partitioned you pretty much have to sit through the lesser songs until it evolves into another.

          4 out of 5 stars Enjoyably unpleasant.......2003-12-04

The nocturnal Emission's best album is divided into two tracks for the CD which correspond to the two sides of the original record. This is odd because on the record, which I purchased in 1984, all of the tracks were separate and had names. This makes it difficult to search through and find specific tracks.
It works in an odd way, however, because like many early 1980s industrial bands Emissions had two styles, one percussive and aggressive, the other electronic and disturbing.
Track one starts with the blending of synth sounds with screams and lots of scraping/pounding of metal, sometimes the sounds are indistinguishable from one another. It evolves into the band's favorite device... the tape loop and sounds from other sources cut together. (Very much like the Severed Heads before they started doing more commercial music) All of this makes you feel that you've either entered the mind of a madman, or it can really annoy you.
Track two is the sort of nightmare disco sound that eventually evolved into techno and is really the best stuff on the record. I can do without the final track on the album, slow and dreary, but the rest is pretty good.
Back when this record first came out-early 1980s, it was a welcome attempt at doing an industrial theme record like SPK had done. Emissions was very much into animal rights so the theme (though not always obvious in their recordings) was stopping animal torture. They were no where near as talented as SPK and more on the level of Portion Control, but Throbbing Gristle had just broken up and Emissions were more on target than Psychic TV, Chris and Cosey or Cabaret Voltaire.
Drowning in a Sea of Bliss is not an easy listen, but thats not what you buy this stuff for, is it?

1 out of 5 stars Do you really have the time to waste.....?.......2003-01-06

With all the wonderful music out there do you need this nonsense...? life is to short to hear all the good stuff.this is just noise.no not ambience ...noise, just turn on your tv set and find an empty channel.now sit back and listen to the white noise. If you want to pay for that then by all means buy this disc.
          Move on.

5 out of 5 stars Tantalizing and magnetizing.......2005-11-13

Now this...this is a wicked art.
Its not easy to describe this CD but
I can remember when I first heard the
              strangely organic machinations of
Magnitized Light years ago. I had heard a
sample at a record store and was as
stunned as I was 'instantly' hooked.
It was $18.99 and worth every dinar
              (many times over).
While aurally turning the pages of
some dusty old text on alchemy or chemistry,
we hear pinions turning and travese channels of
bone and sinue. We study 'process' and the inherent
              beauty of decay and death.
Upon repeated listenings I had to
ask myself what it was in me that LIKED
the 'ookie-bookie' that was inhabiting my
              speakers! It didn't matter...it was
              genius and sonically fascinating.
I've owned two or three other
of Nigel Ayer's cds but ML was the one I'd
return to over and over, sure to be simultaneously
creeped out and awe-struck by its surreal
              sense of presence.
The booklet that comes with this disk
              features several pictures of Nigel's
sculpted art works (including a piece
called Magnetized Light, which is the
image you see on the disk's cover).
A wonderfully consistant and provocative piece
which has easily surpassed many others
in terms of its staying power.

For me, a five-for-five piece of
seminal and pionering electronic work not
to be missed by anyone who claims to favor
the darker regions of the ambient spectrum.
