Coastal
Editorial Reviews
Mark Suppanz, The Big Takeover, Summer 2001 (#48)
"Each song is a soothing delight, perfect for late-night contemplation or a long drive in the country."
Irving Bellemead, Splendid, May 2001
"Coastal plays right to my weakness - sweet, melancholy boy/girl voices, pretty melodies, and I'm hooked."
Album Description
COASTAL's debut album. Eight wonderfully melancholic songs are enfused with an understated beauty that is equally vibrant and fragile. The delicate songs punctuate the contemplative atmospheres developed by artists such as Low and Ida. "Northern" is a lasting piece with a guitar melody that aches from measure to measure, buttressed by Josh Calloway's sturdy bass. "Cinder" is a slightly more optimistic affair, hinting at the brighter moments of Angelo Badalamenti's music on 'Twin Peaks.' The guitar and voice on "Paris Radio" emphasize the dreamy elements of dream pop, incorporating street sounds recorded in Paris at the song's conclusion.
A bed of organs nourish many of the songs, providing balance to "Ivy" and helping to set "Celesta" in motion. "Infrared" ends the album in a sparse gauzy film of 'Victorialand'-era Cocteau Twins guitars, with Jason Gough delivering a heartrending vocal melody.
Throughout the album the backing vocals of Luisa Gough and Sarah Holyoak emphasize the most poignant moments of 'Coastal.'

In the Zone.......2007-07-06
Like an aural chill pill...good music to zone out with, a pleasant nebulous group of chord progressions. Usually puts me to sleep by the second "tune."
Beautiful music!.......2007-03-08
Another beautiful CD from Tim Janis....if you're looking for something relaxing and easy to listen to, this is it!
Coastal America, Tim Janis.......2006-08-28
I discovered Tim Janis on a trip to Kennebunk, Maine in 2000. I was in a shop that was playing his music. I was immediately taken by the uplifting, soothing and beautiful melodies. Some of the pieces have a Celtic flavor, and although his music has a distinct style, each composition is unique. I believe I have all of Tim Janis' CDs. I recommend all of them, but I am particularly enthralled by The Promise, which is very romantic and lush. The though has crossed my mind when I listen to my collection of Tim Janis CDs that if someone close to me were seriously ill, this would be the most therapeutic music I could give them.
Costal America by Tim Janis.......2006-08-25
What beautiful music, just the kind you can relax to. This is what we need more of these days.
Soft and Soothing, sure, But Really Listen to it. .......2006-04-12
It's easy to let Tim Janis play in the background, his work is very soothing. But something caught my ear very early in the tracks. There are strong ethnic and cultural elements woven throughout this album. In one track, with a very New England flavor to it, I thought I detected some Irish rifts. In the track "Olympic Coast", my home area, there is a definite Northwest Coastal Native American influence. The album ends with the track "In Africa" with some clear African vocals.
The entire album has a feeling of Americana, spiced up with the "Tossed Salad" of everything else that makes up our culture. I know I'll enjoy listening to this album many times over. I'll also have to pay attention closely a few more times, to see if I can pick out any more cultural references.
I saw this performed live on PBS and looked it up on Amazon right away. I'm a fan of coastal themes more then I am a Tim Janis fan, but he's growing on me rapidly.

Customer Reviews:
These are not the same arrangements as the original movie soundtracks.......2007-01-21
I was disappointed that these are not the same arrangements as the original movie soundtracks. For example, in Colonel Bogey, the countermarch from the movie soundtrack is not included in the arrangement on this CD. Don't get me wrong, the songs are good, but I would have preferred the same arrangements as the original movies.
An outstanding compilation.......2006-08-25
This compilation is superb and a real must-buy. From Band of Brothers to A Bridge Too Far: every war movie theme is represented here. An all time classic.
The really good ones are missing........2005-07-18
While this compilation has some masterpieces such as the theme from The Great Escape and Is Paris Burning, it's missing some of the finest tracts ever written. Where is the theme from Victory and Ernest Gold's stirring epic from Cross of Iron? The closing theme from Inchon was also a feast for the ears, but it's not here. It was written by Jerry Goldsmith, one of the foremost soundtrack composers of our time. Instead we're subjected to the likes of Hanover Street and The English Patient. I'll admit Inchon and Victory weren't Academy Award winning movies, but their soundtracks were second to none. As John Stossel would say," Give me a break"!!!
"many were winners by the Academy for best scores".......2004-05-26

Good SOLO debut - 2 discs one for each coast??.......2004-12-03
Kurupt's long awaited debut is a double disc, a west coast cd and an east coast cd, although the sound is not much different between the two. All in all it is a pretty good album but not as good as I expected. Out of the 23 songs there are 3 I never listen to and 3 or 4 more that are ok, the rest are quality, which leads to the fact that this could have been a 16 or 17 song classic... Production is handled by a large number of people and is pretty good. D-Moet does 4, Battlecat, DeVante, Daz Dillinger, Storm all do 2, and Dr. Dre, Kurupt, Soopafly, RJ Rice, Easy Mo Bee, Studio Tone, Twin, Warren G, MED all do 1, and 2 producers aren't listed. He has 7 solo songs out of the 23. A little below his "Space Boogie" and a little more below his classic "Streetz Iz a Mutha" but still a good 4 star album to have in your collection.

I'AM OUT, 1
Kuruption ain't a bad thing!.......2001-07-02
Kurupt is one of the best rappers out there. From the time I heard him on Stranded on Death Row I fell for his skill. He can come on strong at times, but he can also be really smooth. I don't see the fact that this album is not as popular as say The Chronic 2001 as a bad thing.....cuz then when you hear someone bumpin this you'll know there goes someone who really knows rap. He knows how to mix East and West and make it bump! I think that the people who say Kurupt ain't no good don't know rap. He's one of the best in the West...he puts his heart into his rhymes and I give this album its well deserved 5 stars.
Kuruption!.......2001-01-03
Kurupt's debut record as a solo recording artist, not a shabby beginning. A little disappointed due to lack of 'west coast' beats. But such songs as 'Ho's A Housewife', 'We Can Freak It' (and the remix), 'C-Walk', and 'Gimmewhutchagot' make up for it. This album features rappers such as Snoop Doggy Dogg, Daz Dillinger, Soopafly, Tray Deee, Warren G, and various others. Good CD, i'd definietly recommend it. Great Dogg Pound Product, just like all others! DPG!
Kuruption!.......2000-07-16
Kurupt has got to be one of my favorite rappers ever, from his start on The Chronic, to his appearances on Doggystyle all the way to the Dogg Food album, he has never dissapointed once. I like this cd alot, mostly the West Coast side which has the biggest hits like "We Can Freak It" "Fresh" "C-Walk" "Put That On Something" "Can't Let That Slide" "This One's For U" "That's Gangsta" and "Make Some Noize" it is just mint. The East Coast side is where i start to have problems, where the songs mostly just are kinda average, to the point of bad. Kuruption seems like Kurupt is a little out of his element, cause you don't see Daz rapping once with him, he has a lot of no-name guests from Antra, and a couple others like Tray-Dee, Buckshot, Slip Capone, Noreaga, Dr.Dre & Baby S. He made a strong comeback on Tha Streetz Iz A Mutha, so a little experimentation isn't really that bad. Go Get This.

Score Another Bullseye for Rumon Gamba.......2004-02-25
What a fabulous recording!
The world premiere recording of Vaughan Williams' famed score for "Scott of the Antarctic", at some 41 minutes, would be a full plate, in and of itself. However, it only constitutes a bit over half of this remarkable CD.
We are not only given the privelege of hearing, for the first time, Vaughan Williams complete score for "Scott", we are treated to his music for "Costal Command" and a score called "The People's Land", of which I was totally ignorant.
All are brilliantly realized, performed and recorded.
Those wonderful people at Chandos have performed a great service to the music world in general and to the legacy of this great composer in particular.
And the wonderful conductor, Rumon Gamba, simply MUST be singled out for, once again, providing us with music making of the most superior kind. This conductor, ladies and gentlemen, is a star on the rise.
One final note: we are intrigued by the title of this CD, "The Film Music of Ralph Vaughan Williams. 'VOLUME 1'".
Since this CD was released well over 1 1/2 years ago, I hope another, featuring the music of Vaughan Williams as conducted by Rumon Gamba, is on the horizon.
The whole of Vaughan Williams' Scott film score at last.......2002-12-04
Since 2001, there have been a number of recordings of `unknown' Vaughan Williams - the original version of A London Symphony the Norfolk Rhapsody No 2 (both from Chandos) and a 2 CD set of his early chamber works (Hyperion). On this CD we have the complete film music to Scott of the Antarctic, with ten `new' movements in addition to the eight usually presented, giving about 25 minutes of extra music. And if that was not enough, Chandos have recorded the music to `The People's Land', a film about the National Trust! This is a British organisation dedicated to preserving historic buildings and areas of outstanding beauty.! But documentary film music is not always routine stuff - Britten's `Night Mail' is a wonderful example of what can be done.
Vaughan Williams, always a man willing to help others, looked for ways to assist the war effort in any way he could (he was in his late 60s), and gave up the field adjoining his garden to allotments for the local people (keeping a plot for himself) and assisting with refugees. But in terms of his own special talents, film music seemed something he might do, and as one might expect from this very adaptable man, he did it very well, continuing after the war with Scott of the Antarctic.
The film makers used less than half of RVW's music for the film, `Scott of the Antarctic' and here it is restored to a score lasting over forty minutes. Commissioned in 1947, it is wonderful stuff, brilliantly descriptive of the icy landscape, penguins and horses in his use of new sonorities. It is intriguing to see how the composer took the music of Ice Floes and the various Glacier movements and built them into the massive Landscape movement of the Sinfonia Antartica of a few years later. Music that is wonderfully evocative in the film is build symphonically into one of the most shattering movements in all music. All in all, this is a wonderful film score - surely one of the best ever written. There is also quite a lot of music which is not found in the symphony at all.
`Coastal Command' (1942) was written for a documentary about the flying-boats which patrolled off Iceland and the North Sea looking for German shipping. `The Hebrides' is a short, beautiful and evocative piece and Dawn Patrol (Quiet Determination) begins lyrically, becoming more agitated.
The People's Land is a lovely piece built from the composer's beloved folksongs together with material to illustrate particular visual aspects of the film.
The Manchester-based BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, under Rumon Gamba, give a fine performance and the Chandos recording is outstanding. Michael Kennedy, close friend of RVW and the leading authority on his work provides the notes.

gotta drink and go fishing!.......1999-10-26
P.O.ed! Stopped in Victoria(Hasting's) and looked for the tape or C.D. which is always played on TEXAS RADIO out of Victoria by a man named Steve Caughman. Did not have this music which is listened to from P.O.C. to as far South as you can fish!Damn good music & radio station. Larry Joe is more relateable than Buffet(Except "Pirate looks at forty") and almost as tough as David Allen ...
There is no other Texas musician quite like Larry Joe........1999-07-25
Larry Joe Taylor has the uncanny ablity to tell tales with the best of today's storytellers in music. With a wit and wisdom comparable to Jimmy Buffett, John Prine, and Steve Goodman, his music is a must have to all who dream of the escapist way of life, but are grounded in a little reality. " American Dream" sums up how many feel in their daily lives, while "Brooksmith Texas" is a sad but realistic telling of how many of the rustic small Texas towns are literally drying up with the moves to the modern meccas of Dallas and Houston." Coastin'" is that Port A influence coming out in Larry Joe.....and let me say that I too....."Love coastin'." "Third Coast" is the autobiographical song wherein LJ admits that "..I followed Buffett to the Florida Keys." Make no mistake, however, LJ draws his influences from many sources, and his music is definitely his own. This is a must have CD for any who desire a little escape from the daily grind, a little fantasy, and a damn good time. Great music! Great performer.
Jimmy Buffett goes Texan.......1999-02-12
Larry Joe will be a cult favorite like Robert Earl Keene and Jimmy Buffett, because he combines both styles with his own wit and wisdom.

The Best From The Best!!!.......2004-12-23
This is, in my opinion, the best work from Peter Allen. Of course, that's saying A LOT because this singer-songwriter-vocalist was one of the top male performers in the 60's thru the 90's. The only sour note is that Peter never received even one Grammy award. Not for writing "I Honestly Love You", "Don't Cry Out Loud", or "I'd Rather Leave While I'm In Love". He did receive an academy award (along with his co-writers) for Arthur's Theme, however.
The opener "One Step Over The Borderline" is a cooker. "Fly Away" is probably my most favorite song of any singer/songwriter ever. "Bi Coastal" is a perfect sentiment of two of the greatest places to ever be. Brilliant in many dimensions, this song is a hot rocker! "I Don't Go Shopping" is a soulful love song. "When This Love Affair Is Over" is the ultimate tribute to a loved one.
The production of this work is classic and the arrangements are brilliant. I have wonderful memories of seeing Peter perform these songs numerous times in Los Angeles with my best friend. Seeing Peter backstage and having him autograph the cover my LP of Bi Coastal was a thrilling experience. It's wonderful to finally have the cd in my collection.
PETER'S ROCK & SOUL MASTERPIECE~BRAVO!!!.......2003-09-15
Peter Allen was prepared when he went into the studio to record "Bi-Coastal" which shows all of the best sides of his remarkable talent plus the energy that was always wonderful to experienced in his amazing live concerts! Never have we had a talent quite like Peter who barred his soul in performance so completely with his own brilliant compositions that were all a bunch of classics~even greats such as Sinatra chose material to record from Peter Allen's extraordinary songbook which stands as one of the finest ever. From the soulful rhythmic opener "ONE STEP OVER THE BORDERLINE" to the hauntingly beautiful closer "WHEN THIS LOVE AFFAIR IS OVER", it is clear that this is a great talent at the peak of his wonderous talent and having a great time!!!! In concert Peter was alot of fun and the song "BI-COASTAL" is a prime rocking example of his great sense of humor as Peter had fun playing around with double meanings and this is a classic example!! "I COULD REALLY SHOW YOU AROUND" smolders with sensual intensity and is an intoxicating experience listening to this classic which brings back the great vision of Peter doing it laying down on the top of the piano and this has never been matched by anyone! "Bi-Coastal" is a wildly satisfying diverse collection of great songs and performances by one of the greatest ever at his absolute peak~this type of greatness will never happen again...Thank you Peter and we miss you alot...
One of Peter Allen's great albums!.......2003-02-21
It's terrific that Peter Allen's albums are (albeit slowly) being released on CD. This one has terrific songs and performances. A must have for any fan or for folks discovering this incredibly talented singer-songwriter.
Peter Allen - Genius!!.......2002-09-30
The music is unbelievable. Peter Allen is a great talent. Every song on the album is really good; each song better than the last. Great highway music. This album is spectacular (I'd like to 'take him home'!) This is wonderful stuff. Trust me.

Album Description
Packed with twenty (20) Lowcountry blues originals and clocking in at 72+ minutes of playing time (co-producer Eddie West joked about a "boxed set" while the album was being recorded), this is a big and boisterous package from the Carolina blues artist and his talented band. "Why not max out the CD?," asks SCS. "Plenty more tunes where these came from." As usual, blues is the foundation, but the Lowcountry musical flavors range from Caribbean rhythms and Southern rock to country, funk, and Latin. A wild ride through the heart of "Lowcountry blues"!

Traditional Fusion.......2002-09-19
For fans of traditional music this is a must-have. It is a colusion of Middle-Eastern, African, and Indian music. Middle Eastern is what stands out most but it sounds far different than most Arab or Turkic music that I've heard. In some ways its more accessible to the novice as well.
