The Band: Big Surf is a tight trio (guitar/keyboard, bass & drums). They play instrumental surf, which is more hard-driven and emotional than say, Jan & Dean or The Beach Boys. Or: if you enjoyed the surf music in Pulp Fiction, you'll probably like this album.

The Album: Action Heroes features 16 songs total, which is pretty generous. The recording sounds balanced to me: just enough bass and not too much guitar and the drums have snap throughout.

The Music: You'll find a good variety of music, from the mellow to the big kahuna. Although it's all surf music, you'll find other influences as well, most notably, the Middle Eastern flair in "Falafel". There are a couple of slower (and in my opinion, less interesting) moments on the album, but overall it's one thrilling ride!

And I didn't even think that I liked surf music...

I like this Album very much, i love to hear the tracks while I'm cycling but I think the older Albums like "bambule" especially the track "fuechse" are much better!

The tracks on this 'album' are not the original recordings. They're all reproductions of the originals, played on a synthesizer. Poorly. So if you're looking for your favorite movie themes, look elsewhere because this is not it. These aren't the originals. Just agonizingly bad synthesized imitations. Avoid at all costs.

This compilation is good ebcause it has some tracks from rare film scores, the bad news is that most of them are re-recorded on a synthesizer. The exception is the end Credits from Bill Conti's Masters of the Universe. A Great track ,similar to John Williams' Superman theme. There's also an original track from Terminator and Cyborg.

The CD starts with 7 tracks from Universal Soldier composed by Christopher Franke. These are well done, I've never seen the movie or heard the score, it sounds similar ike his music from Babylon 5.

Some other rarities are Jay Chattaway's Red Scorpion, Frank's Showdown in Little Tokyo, and Dreith's The Punisher. I haven't seen CDs for those before, but they might be available. The rest of the are tracks are from movies that are pretty easily available on CD in their true form, not synthesized like they are here.

All in all, I would pass on this and go straight for the original soundtrack of Universal Soldier, but pick this up if you can get it cheap, you may enjoy it.
