Zero In

Editorial Reviews
About the Artist
Addicted2Fiction is an all-girl electronic darkwave band originally from Brooklyn, but now based in Los Angeles. Prior to founding A2f, Hellskiss and Aisha were core members of Gul, Redhot Secret and new wave punk quarted Crowns on 45, whose music was featured in BETTER LUCK TOMORROW (released by MTV films). Chris, a member of the innovative band, SQUAB, joined A2F in winter 2004. A2F combine their diverse influences and inspirations with prodigious musicianship in an entirely original way, updating, reprocessing and twisting seemingly familiar sounds to make them very much their own.

Album Description
ZERO IN, Addicted2Fiction's, debut 6-song ep exemplifies the band's propulsive electronic instrumentation utilizing anything within reach to create a unique, dark undeniably evocative sound. Their infectious songs are punctuated by addictive retro-pop industrial hooks, fierce guitar and bass riffs, sampled "found sounds", multi-layered drum tracks, haunting synth layers, processed vocals and a myriad of eerily compelling effects.

Zero In, Music, Addicted2Fiction, Addicted2Fiction's six song debut is a blend of evocative lyrics with, and a mix of genres, from industrial, electro, darkwave to even goth - a unique blend of live instruments and found sounds from this all girl outfit defies genres while recalling many.

4 out of 5 stars Great CD!.......2007-01-18

I bought the CD since it had one of my favorite songs on it. I did not know most of the other songs, but I have really grown to like them. A lot of these songs are not played on the radio. I am glad that I bought this CD since it has introduced me to other great songs by Authority Zero. If you like this band this is a really great CD!

5 out of 5 stars This CD Rocks!.......2006-03-04

What an incredible band! I will be going to se them this month. I must tell you, if you do not have this cd in your collection, get it and play it often and very LOUD! it is great!

4 out of 5 stars Wish They Would Come Here Soon.......2006-02-05

The only reason this album doesnt get 4 stars is cos there is some filler. No doubt.

The good songs on here though are really really high quality. Over Seasons was the first Zero song I heard, I loved it.

Its harmless yet meaningful music. Its kinda ska I guess if you're trying to categorise it, but its varying degrees of punk and general rock misxed in there.

The reason you buy this album is for the following songs:
One More Minute
Passage In Time
Over Seasons
Everyday
Lying Awake

To me, the rest simply arent as good. I understand that an album cant have straight good songs, but the fall in quality is a lot.

This being said, I love these guys and wish they would tour the UK.

5 out of 5 stars best cd EVER.......2005-08-22

Every song on this album is great! The only downfall is that there aren't enough songs.

5 out of 5 stars Ask your mom for 20 bucks........2005-03-07

The best songs on this CD are: A Passage In Time, Everyday, One More Minute, Superbitch, Sky's the Limit, Some People, Over Seasons, Mesa Town

The only complaint is that I have different versions of "A Passage In Time" and "Sky's the Limit" on my computer...I like those versions better and I think they should've been put on this CD either with or instead of the other ones. These guys are awesome live, too. Check them out and buy this CD!

Amazon.com essential recording

Like his frequent partner, Yo-Yo Ma, pianist Emanuel Ax has become infatuated with the tangos of Astor Piazzolla. Ax sought out pianist Pablo Ziegler, a long-time member of Piazzolla's ensemble, to make these arrangements and perform them with him. With his innate musicianship and Ziegler as a tutor, Ax has entered wholeheartedly into the world of the New Tango. These performances have just the right feeling for rhythm and color. Whether you need an album of Piazzolla on two pianos is another question. I'd say get some of Piazzolla's own recordings first. But for piano tango this album is a total success. --Leslie Gerber

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2005-07-16

There is a certain intensity in Piazzola's music that is hard to describe. It can be very powerful and nostalgic at the same time, very energetic and extremely mellow. Rumor has it that when Piazzola was studing music, his teacher pesuaded him to go back to his natural instrument, the bandoneon, as Piazzola had proven to play it with a special sensitivity.
While played in the bandoneon , Piazzola's music reaches all its Argentinean identity and character, but in the piano- in this case two of them- his music transforms and gets a richness that is really imppresive. I can't imagine two better piano players to deliver the passion of Piazzola's music. Emmanuel Ax and Pablo Ziegler are amazing together. Los Tangueros is a classic for all the Piazzola fans.

5 out of 5 stars Typical Piazzolla...Extraordinary.......2003-03-05

The quintessential Piazzolla is presented here in a rapturous performance by several artists in their own right. I was attracted to this recording because I play the piano and the idea of Emanual Ax and Pablo Ziegler (another one of those classical-Tango joint venture a la Yo Yo Ma) performing Tango was too much to pass up.

The transcriptions are very, very good. In fact, though one can readily distinguish the sound from the classic Tango ensemble, the music is seamless. It works! Of particular interest is "La muerte del angel". One wishes that the "angel" trilogy could be presented in one package instead of spread out over several recordings. And speaking of transcripts, a German firm now distributes piano versions of Piazzolla tangos in three volumes.

While I'm wishing, it would be great if someone recorded the entire body of Piazzolla compositions in one collection.

5 out of 5 stars A Christlike Performance.......2000-08-02

I was unfamiliar with Emanuel Ax, very familiar with Pablo Ziegler, and ultra familiar with the work of Astor Piazzolla, so I decided to give this CD a try. The only disappointment is that there are only 12 songs on this recording. It must have been difficult for Piazzolla acolyte Ziegler to decide which of the hundreds of worthy Piazzolla compositions to record. In the end, he did a great job not only in selecting a variety of Piazzolla styles, but also in selecting those which fit his conception of this project. Its hard to choose a favorite here though if pressed, I'd name the stately Soledad followed closely by the equally majestic Tangata. Ziegler's arrangements are impeccable. He proves that a lot of music can spring from two pianos with no other instrumentation needed when the arrangements are right. I heartily recommend this album not only to Piazzolla fans, but to fans of the piano. I hope that Ax and Ziegler soon offer an encore to this Christlike performance.

5 out of 5 stars superb playing of great music.......1999-08-07

Piazzola does for tango what Gershwin did for the blues. And there is no better medium to hear what Piazzola is up to than these splendid arrangements for two pianos. Emanuel Ax, of course, is one of America's best living pianists. With Ziegler, he forms an unforgettable team. Highly worthwhile.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Breath-Taking.......2007-03-05

Being a harpist myself, I can truly admire Catrin Finch's talent, style and choice of music selections for her first album.

Some songs are truly a revelation for the harp as an instrument using New Age style accompaniment, while there are still pieces with a classical vibe.

Well Done!

5 out of 5 stars full of energy worth savouring.......2004-12-13

The artist is able to deconstruct the traditional image of harp as an instument. The texture and the hue of the music is rich and full of lustre. very creative and versatile.

3 out of 5 stars Versatile virtuoso outshines musically uneven material.......2004-02-01

There's a reason Charles, Prince of Wales, revived a long-dormant (since 1871) tradition and presented Catrin Finch a Royal Appointment as his harpist. At age 23 she is a remarkable talent, with pristine technique and a fluency in the languages of both classical and contemporary music.

If only the material on her debut disc were equal to her talent.

While Finch is extraordinary, the music is a mixed bag of modern jazz/pop tunes, re-tooled classical favorites, and several hit-and-miss arrangements by Finch's musical partner, composer Karl Jenkins.

It's all starts and stops, ups and downs. In the jazz/pop genre, Dave Grusin's infectious "Mountain Dance" and the relaxed groove of Pat Metheny/Lyle Mays' "James" are perfectly suited for harp, while Chick Corea's "Spain" just never catches fire. Among the contemporary, experimental compositions, Jenkins' minimalist but tuneful "Harpers Bizarre" is far more interesting than Steve Reich's "Third Movement from Electric Counterpoint" - a tedious ostinato that never develops into anything. In a more traditional vein, "Crossing the Stone," taken from Jenkins' double harp concerto, is a rich, lovely setting of a Welsh folk tune, but two other selections from the concerto - "Eternal Dream" and "Caf? Vamp Latino" - don't relate musically at all. And while Finch, unaccompanied, is flawless on Bach's "Prelude from Partita No. 3," her performance of Handel's "Arrival of the Queen of Sheba" is marred by the decision to include some noisy Middle Eastern percussion, as is Debussy's "Clair de lune" by an intrusive, soporific voice-over.

On the upside again, Bach/Gounod's "Ave Maria" and the Welsh lullaby "Suo Gan" team Finch nicely with solo voices (though countertenor Terrance Barber's vibrato is perhaps an acquired taste), and Jenkins' "Thingamujig" is a fun, lively jig.

Concluding the album, the first movement of Jenkins' "Palladio" (featured for years in TV commercials for DeBeers diamonds) in a dull dance remix has none of the energy of the original version for string quartet and is a totally gratuitous inclusion.

From Finch's liner-note comment that "I've never really been stuffy about classical music ... I'm open to everything, really," it's apparent that some tracks are an attempt to make a "classical" instrument more accessible to listeners of contemporary music. Again, Finch is terrific, but listeners would be better served by a recording of the harpist that displays her virtuosity in a single genre - whether classical, contemporary or experimental - instead of this hodgepodge.

Give the performer five stars, the material two, and look forward to hearing this talented young artist for many years to come.

5 out of 5 stars A Towering Musical Achievement.......2003-10-29

While biographies disguised as reviews are tiresome, some background is in order, in this case. At the age of 23, Catrin Finch has been playing the harp for 18 years. She was appearing on British television and with major orchestras by the time she was 10, and was appointed the Royal Harpist to HRH The Prince of Wales (a.k.a. Prince Charles) at the age of 20. Bottom line: This lady has more than enough credentials to be regarded as a major musical talent.

But does having a long list of credentials translate to making a great album? In this case, you bet it does. On "Crossing The Stone," Catrin Finch combines piles of technical expertise with surprising and even stunning musical choices. Sure, she covers classical music (such as Bach's 'Prelude from Partita #3' and Handel's 'The Arrival of The Queen of Sheba') brilliantly, but you'd expect that from an alumnus of The Royal College of Music. But would you expect to hear a piece by jazz pianist Dave Grusin done on the harp? How about music by guitarist Pat Metheny, or a Chick Corea composition?

Catrin Finch is an incredible talent, and she has created a beautiful, eclectic album that demands (and will receive) repeated listening. Unfortunately, it's also an album that you probably won't find in your local music store. This album has not received a lot of publicity, and I have yet to walk into a CD store and find it sitting on the shelf. Save yourself a lot of tedious shopping: buy it here and now.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful Harp Album.......2003-08-26

I first heard Catrin Finch on a free sample CD I received and when I listened to it, I couldn't believe that the instrument that she was playing was the harp! It was so vibrant and full of life. It felt like I had opened the windows and let the sun shine in. The harp is the world's oldest - and most difficult instrument, but in Ms. Finch's power it is sounds both contemporary effortlessly played. It is a wonderful buy for any appreciate of music, and the most electric harp album ever produced.

Cleveland's Pere Ubu, led by howling lead singer David Thomas, have been doing their unique brand of nonlinear experimental garage synth-pop since 1975. Sharing an ethos (and the occasional band member) with experimental acts like the Red Crayola or Captain Beefheart, Pere Ubu are tough to classify as just plain weird--sometimes their pop sensibilities, no matter how off-kilter, just get the best of them. Futuristic and retro at the same time, Pere Ubu never seem to know quite where they're going, and that's what makes them so engaging. This five-CD set documents the beginning to middle period of their career, including five early records, 17 live tracks, and an entire disc of songs from various side projects and Ubu-related acts. --Donovan Finn

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Ubu.......2007-02-22

Pere Ubu were a legend back in the post-punk days. They were known as being very difficult. Their records were also very difficult to find. I also had problems with David Thomas's solo records since his "singing" could be difficult at times, even though he got great reviews for that stuff. However I must say that all the Pere Ubu stuff is very rewarding. It obvously had a very great influence on all the american underground music that would come out in later years. When this set came out it was quite expensive as I remember it but I decided to pick it up at Newbury Comics in Boston anyway and it was grerat to finally have these records on CD. Anyone interested in the history of alternative music and punk should try to get this box set. What they did later would be much much more mellow and commercial

4 out of 5 stars This is a story of Cleveland..........2005-11-20

This is a story of Cleveland, and how more than a few of its residents were driven insane by the economic depression and the bleakness of the post-industrial wasteland that was the "rust-belt" of the late 60's and early-mid 70's. Having nothing better to do, they just made music, with most likely nary a clue as to how influential their experimental tinkerings would become to a whole generation of musical revolutionaries.

I had always heard the name "Pere Ubu" mentioned by many modern musical artists (and many of my personal favorites) as being a big influence, but I never actually heard any of their songs until I got satellite radio a couple of years ago. I was immediately intrigued by songs like "Final Solution", "Nonalignment Pact", and "Ubu Dance Party", and then I found this box set available that contained all of their early work, so I figured, what the heck? At first, I was overwhelmed by radically diverse song structures and bizarre sounds, not to mention Dave Thomas' crazed (to quote Steven Grant of the Trouser Press) "plebian warble", and I worried that I had made a big mistake. However, after a few listens, things started to gel a bit and I was able to finally get my head around the sheer brilliance and inventiveness of this groundbreaking work. Now, here's my breakdown of the 5 discs in this box set:

Disc A contains the original Datapanik EP and The Modern Dance LP. This is easily the most accessible of their work and is definitely the place you should start if you have no familiarity with this band. The song structures are pretty straight-forward in the garage-punk sense, but there is still plenty of the idiosyncrasies (both vocal and instrumental) that would virtually take over in their later work. Everything here is uniformly great, except for maybe "Sentimental Journey" and "The Book is on the Table", which aren't actual songs as much as just experiments in sound and mood (all their albums have these "soundscape" pieces - they're not really filler, but they're not music in the traditional sense either).

Disc B contains the Dub Housing and New Picnic Time LP's, and this has become my favorite of the 5 discs over time. The key here is "OVER TIME", as the music on this disc was, at first, incomprehensibly bizarre to me, and it appeared to be the nonsensical ravings of lunatics trapped in an insane asylum with musical instruments and recording equipment. I gave it a chance, though, and ended up being greatly rewarded for my perseverance. Once you "get it", the amalgamation of blues, jazz, rock, pop, and downright performance art fleshed out with reckless abandon is just amazing. The humor and the horror, along with a myriad of other emotional nuances, always leaves something new to be discovered each time I listen. Once again, everything is great, with "Thriller!" and "A Small Dark Cloud" serving as the quasi-ambient soundscape interludes. My favorite song is probably "Small Was Fast" - that one just kills me. The first two discs of this set have actually become two of my favorite CDs of ALL TIME!

For me, things wane a little bit on disc C, which includes the material from Art of Walking and Song of the Bailing Man. I like about half the songs here, with most of those coming from Art of Walking. The music from Song of the Bailing Man seems a little staid and forced when compared to their earlier stuff. This is probably my least favorite disc of the 5, but some of you may find this almost as accessible as the material on disc A, especially if you end up getting more into Pere Ubu's smoother, jazzier side.

Disc D contains selections from two live recordings, one in 1978 and the other in 1981. The sound is bootleg quality, and this is not meant to be a "best of" live recordings (as Dave Thomas explains in the vocal liner notes: "that's life, that's art"), but the performances are actually quite good and offer sometimes radically different takes on the studio versions of the songs.

Disc E is quite interesting as it is made up entirely of side projects and other Cleveland bands belonging to the Pere Ubu extended family. I didn't have any expectations for this one, but I actually ended up liking about two thirds of the songs here. I'm especially fond of the raw, garage-rock of the songs by Friction, Tripod Jimmie, Rocket from the Tombs, and the Mirrors. You can really here how this lot were influenced by earlier pioneers such as the Velvet Underground and Television.

So, in conclusion, for those of you who are interested in exploring the roots of where a lot of today's better music comes from, or if you just want a unique musical experience, you should consider this Pere Ubu box set. Be warned, though, this is some pretty challenging stuff, and you'll have to uphold your end of the bargain by doing some work yourself - this is not ear candy that's going to reveal itself for what it is on the first (or even second) listen. However, if you give it a chance, I think you'll be deeply rewarded. Why not 5 stars? Well, I think it's almost impossible for these large box sets to ever warrant 5 stars because there's always going to be stuff that you don't like or just aren't into, but I don't think that's their purpose anyway. To me, these types of compilations are meant to be like smorgasbords, where you pick out what you like from a vast selection of delicacies, some of which you can't find anywhere else. Have I made you hungry? Well, then, dig in!

4 out of 5 stars There can be no fabulous sequels.......2003-12-17

You need to love, honor, and obey these records, jointly or severally: and you might want to buy the original records for cover art and order alone, but if you are not familiar with the premise of Pere Ubu (addressing the problem of datapanik) I expect the box set might straighten you out a little bit. However, what you do not need to do is be particularly faithful to Pere Ubu's vision; although covers of Pere Ubu are frequently enough attempted, the point is to be quite singular, which they have always managed (though consider 15-60-75 and other 70s Cleveland acts included on the final disc). A lot of people don't like Pere Ubu, and although this has its consequences this is not a good reason not to listen to them; and frankly, partisans of *musique concrete* need to reconsider exactly what they are recommending to the people of the modern dance if it is not something like this. (Note: there are few partisans of musique concrete. Note that this is a note.)

5 out of 5 stars Collection of Awesome, Underheard Music.......2001-12-20

This set sneaked out, at a very reasonable price, a few years ago and was presumably gobbled up by those of us familiar with Ubu's music from decades gone by. Those unacquainted with Pere Ubu's work from the 70's should consider purchase too, at least if you're interested in dissonant music and/or in progressive, complex hard rock music. Let me try to describe each disc in this (very moderately priced) set.

Disc 1 has the original "Datapanic" EP, consisting of tunes originally released on singles circa 1976 and 1977. These songs, such as the scarifying "Heart of Darkness" and "30 Seconds Over Tokyo" are dark but within their moody framework extremely well-constructed. The band starts to open it out a little on tracks like "Heaven" (sounds like the Rolling Stones circa 1976) and "Cloud 149" (sounds like some of the most brilliant utilization of rock riffs and instrumentation that I have ever heard). We are then treated to Ubu's debut LP (from 1978) "The Modern Dance" which has always been my favorite of theirs. This is the true sound of the American underground, sitting fermented in a pile of Velvets and Stooges records for years and now ready to burst out and make the world take notice. Each element of the band (Tom Herman's inside-out and always tasteful guitar, Scott Krauss's perfectly on-the-mark, fluid and creative drumming, Tony Maimone's probing bass, Alan Ravenstine's Eno-esque [circa Roxy Music] keyboard dissonance, and David Thomas' Tiny Tim-like vocal journeys) congeals into a powerful whole. The LP contains 10 songs and suffice it to say that they are all different and all worthwhile. It is a brilliant album which did deserve, and still does deserve, to be heard.

Disc 2 has the "Dub Housing" LP from 1978 and the "New Picnic Time" LP from 1979. Each of these is a classic in its own right and pursues furtherance of the band's adventurous and rhythmically dense style. "Dub Housing" is full of great instrumental interplay and fascinating stylistic maneuvers; "New Picnic Time" gets a bit dark and meandering but contains an EP's worth of stuff that probably ranks as some of the strongest and most delicious music ever to be filed under the "rock" genre.

Disc 3 is not Ubu at their best - it has most of the tracks from the two albums recorded after Mayo Thompson replaced Tom Herman on guitar - "The Art of Walking" and "Song of the Bailing Man". These LPs are unusual curiosities, especially "The Art of Walking" which has to rank as one of the strangest products ever released, but you'll probably never be motivated to get up and play them each before breakfast on a daily basis.

Disc 4 is "390 Degrees of Simulated Stereo Volume 2", actually the third live Ubu release. Like Volume 1 (still out-of-print) this collection is highlighted by material recorded live by the 1978 band. In addition to songs which were on Volume 1, there's an interesting run through "Sentimental Journey" (a dark piece which manages to be both droning and anarchic). The disc also contains some material recorded during the Mayo Thompson days.

Disc 5 is an unusual collection of tracks by Ubu-related projects or bands, or Cleveland bands that had an effect on Ubu. It's an unusual concept, but contributes effectively to showing us the "Cleveland Scene" that spawned Ubu. My favorites include Rocket From The Tombs' version of "30 Seconds Over Tokyo", Tom Herman (with Scott Krauss) doing a track called "Steve Canyon Blues", and Peter Laughner (who played with the band on their early singles) leading his band "Friction" through "Dear Richard". The Mirrors' "She Smiled Wild" is quite interesting too, as is 15-60-75's "It's In Imagination". "Syd's Dance Party" (which included Krauss and Maimone) contribute a very nice track also.

Okay. What's the bottom line on all this? Well, it's indispensably great. A great conflagration of energies. At its moderate price, you should buy it if you're interested in Ubu.

5 out of 5 stars This Is THE Essential Pere Ubu Collection.......2001-11-13

Forget buying all those early (1975-1982) Pere Ubu albums on CD individually. You'll save money and come out way ahead by investing in this box set. It has all the original studio albums right up to their first break up. That's 6 albums, here presented as 3 "twofers" - 2 albums per CD. It also has a live disc of previously unreleased recordings, and disc 5 is devoted entirely to side projects of all the band members, which I for one found to be very interesting. Most of these side bands are pretty obscure, and the quality of the music on this fifth disc is pretty spotty, but there are some gems to be found here and I doubt you'd have much luck finding most of these recordings anywhere else. If you think you're enough of a Pere Ubu fan that you'd want to have, say, 3 or 4 of their early albums on CD, then take my advise and get this box set. It won't cost you much more than those single discs would have, but you'll get a heck of a lot more for you're money.

I was not terribly impressed with this CD. Fortunately, I decided to get it from the library to see if it was good before deciding whether or not to buy it.

Although the orchestration of the songs is well done, most of them simply were not meant to be performed by a chorus; and they sound terrible in that form. If you want some of the songs on this CD, I suggest you look at one of Disney's compilation CDs in the Classic Disney Vol. 1-5 series or the actual soundtracks of the movies.

5 out of 5 stars Inexorable wonder!.......2001-06-23

Where to start?! Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra have had a track record for recording some of the most stupendous movie music ever. Magical Musicals is just another example of how audaciously bold, yet beautiful Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops have taken the original scores, molded them into the same pieces, yet at the same time, creating life of their own in each and every note. If you are looking for ANY soundtrack containing Disney music, this should be the first CD you listen to. There are others out there, and yes, they may sound beautiful and enchanting, but you won't find such a unique and compelling score anywhere else other than this CD. Check it out!!

The title track is another heavenly release from Zero 7, relaxed with sensual female vocals. The track conjures up images of the summer and sun, with it's slow and easy going tempo.

On the other hand, there is the rest of the single. Aquanote's Naked Adapation for this track is nothing short of heavenly. We got some dance beat and the tempo is going up, but it keeps the easy and relaxed feel. Heavenly.

    5 out of 5 stars Delightful.......2003-07-07

This is an outstanding entry in the rich, rewarding Naxos catalog of twentieth-century British music. It has been highly praised, receiving a number of favorable reviews. Personally I find its music delightful and exceptionally attractive.

Sir Arthur Bliss (1891-1975; he succeeded Bax as Master of the Queen's Music in 1953) conceded that he found it easier to write "dramatic" or "program" music than "pure" or "absolute" music; in other words, he preferred to write music that was about something. A Colour Symphony (1922), his first major orchestral work, was written at the instigation of Elgar. Bliss conceived the idea of a symphony based on colors: "I saw the possibility of so characterizing the four movements of a symphony, that each should express a colour as I personally perceived it." The four movements are: (1) Purple (Andante maestoso), described by Bliss as "the Colour of Amethysts, Pageantry, Royalty and Death"; (2) Red (Allegro vivace), "the Colour of Rubies, Wine, Revelry, Furnaces, Courage and Magic"; (3) Blue (Gently flowing), "the Colour of Sapphires, Deep Water, Skies, Loyalty and Melancholy"; and (4) Green (Moderato), "the Colour of Emeralds, Hope, Youth, Joy, Spring and Victory." Elgar found the symphony too modern for his Edwardian taste, but it doesn't sound particularly modern to our ears, and in fact seems to me strongly reminiscent of Elgar. It has been described as young man's music.

Adam Zero (1946) was Bliss's third ballet, written for the Sadlers Wells company and a product of his maturity. The story is of a company creating a ballet, and the creation of the ballet is seen as an allegory for the span of human life. Adam Zero is in one scene, with 21 brief musical numbers, lively and multi-faceted. Bliss considered it his most varied and exciting ballet score.

Bliss has been described (Oxford Dictionary of Music) as the composer of "works in a bold, post-Elgarian style, vigorous and rich in texture but lacking the inner poetry of his model." He may not be of the stature of Elgar, but his best music deserves hearing and commands attention. These are two of his major works, and I find all the music on this CD pleasing, appealing, accessible, mercurial, colorful and imaginative, full of interest. Its idiom is one of conservative, tonal modernism. None of it is aggressively modern, atonal, dissonant, discordant. The performances (in Leeds Town Hall, 1995) leave nothing to be desired; Lloyd-Jones has shown himself to be a distinguished exponent of twentieth-century British music, and the English Northern Philharmonia (which he founded and built) plays with polish, precision, and richness of tone. Two more pluses: the sound is superb, and the disc is budget-priced. I warmly recommend this CD to any lover of orchestral music.

5 out of 5 stars Los Colores de Sir Arthur Bliss.......2001-03-10

    Fuertemente recomendado.

5 out of 5 stars Bliss orchestral colour.......2000-03-09

It is always as difficult thing to attempt to encapsulate music on the form of words and worse still to generalise about a composer. However, to my mind Arthur Bliss worked within three styles within which he moved around throughout his long career. The first style, around which this CD gravitates, is a lyrical successor to Elgar, a contemporary of John Ireland. The second style is a balletic, twisting, muscular tapestry in which he can depict the squalor of a tenement as in 'Miracle in the Gorbals' or portray the cycle of life and death as in 'Adam Zero' here. The third style is a synthesis of the two which can lead into an apocalyptic struggle, culminating in a dark victory with full orchestra as in the 'Things to Come'. The flowing melodic lines, the clean and fresh orchestration that has a spark of originality make his first style very approachable. The 'Color Symphony'(1922) is an early work based on heraldric use of color rather than a broader artistic sense, giving Bliss license to explore his first style to an extent as he would in no other subsequent work. The first movement 'Purple' uses a 'nobilmente' style redolent of Elgar but with an unearthly, ghostly undertone. The scherzo 'Red', is reminiscent of the equivalent movement in Vaughan Williams' 'A London Symphony' with its delightful use of dancing rhythms and tone color. Bliss does not use folk idioms like VW and yet maintains an English flavour throughout. Adam Zero has music of the first two styles, setting out the journey of Man as he progresses through the stages of life's way in an almost pagan depiction of the annual and human life cycle. The scoring, the music throughout is totally brilliant and it is deplorable that this wok is not performed more often. Bliss uses the then contemporary music to show a night club and the death of Adam is totally lacking in pathos and we have the distance of a dispassionate observer throughout. This a story of nature, beyond good and evil and Bliss keeps his musical arguments legitimate. He was a truthful artist who never pandered to an easy and more populist style which might have won him more converts. I believe that his honesty will pay off in the fullness of time. Superb playing by the English Northern Philharmonia and full marks to Naxos for having the idea of providing us with the more neglected works in the repertoir.

Inventive Dream Syndicate leader turned inconsistent solo artist Steve Wynn's songwriting has grown increasingly assured and concise even as he's struggled to achieve an appropriate musical framework. He regains his momentum impressively on this 1996 release, downplaying the singer-songwriter focus of his first couple of solo efforts in favor of a more grounded variation on the darkly personal guitar rock that put his former band on the map. The result is Wynn's most compelling solo outing yet, thanks in no small part to the presence of Come as his backup band; their elegant lurch gives songs like "What We Call Love," "Drizzle," and the droney raga-rock title cut a no-nonsense kick that perfectly complements Wynn's playfully cerebral lyrics. --Scott Schinder

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Just what Steve Wynn needed.......2005-05-05

What a difference an incredible backing band can make! The original lineup of Come gives Wynn the kick in the pants he needed to transcend the often pointlessly wandering Dream Syndicate sound.

The combination of Come's muscular rhythm section and nasty double guitar attack is the perfect complement to Wynn's vocals. They push and pull him with exhilarating results.

Definitely recommended for both Come fans and Steve Wynn fans.

5 out of 5 stars Best since "Days of Wine and Roses".......1999-10-22

It was a great idea to have Come as backing band; Steve has needed some feedback and into-the-abyss style energy. If you liked the best of Dream Syndicate you'll be pleased by this one.
