The Stoned Channel [Explicit Lyrics]

Editorial Reviews
About the Artist
Jeffrey Davis, leader of The J.J. Davis Band, is a musician, writer, producer, singer, and actor who has been involved in creative aspects of the San Francisco scene for the past 25 years. Some of his musical projects have been Elements Of Style, Thee Hellhounds, The Snake Oil Boys, and Stinky and His Rat Bastards. He presently plays as Impor Hisky, The Polka Butcher, in seminal hardcore polka purveyors, Polkacide. His film appearances include "No One Sleeps," "The Story of Rosa Fuhr," and of course, "The Stoned Channel."

Highlighted Artists of The J.J. Davis Band:

"Van Gogh Was Not A Stoner" -- The retro-punk "Van Gogh Was Not A Stoner" -- the college radio favorite -- features a driving-memorable vocal performance by Les Izmore, formerly of San Francisco's Thee Hellhounds. "We were going after the neo folk/punk sound, kinda Milwaukee 1984, like the Violent Femmes," says producer/composer Jeff Davis. "I think Vincent would have loved the raw energy of it... especially since he only had one ear."

"Those Were The Bongs" -- "This was a parody, pure and simple," says producer Jeff Davis, "and we strove to faithfully mimic the sound we were mocking." Featuring vocals by Katie Wees and arrangements by Lance Kaufmann (Harmless, Karla Pundit, Yard Trauma, and the song, "They Dug Up Elvis") "Those Were The Bongs" brilliantly pays homage to the 1968 pop nostalgia classic. Musicians here also include Niel Basa, of famed Frisco Hardcore polkateers, Polkacide, on clarinet, Pete Webster on mandolin, and Peter Nye, on accordion, from roots rockers The Snake Oil Boys. "We juggled party bowls with our parents' college goals cause we were young, and yes those were the bongs."

"Marijuana Party Time" -- The reggae rhythms of "Marijuana Party Time" are built upon the solid foundation of bassist Jay Radford (Stinky and The Rat Bastards) and drummer John J.T. Thomas (Tumblin' Dice). Lead vocalist James A. Dillon (Archipelago Brewing Co. and Caroliner Rainbow) delivers an emotionally fraught plea that "party time" is "good for democracy, it's a song everyone can rhyme!"

"Hello, My Old Friend (Marijuana)" -- A mournful introspective country ballad that has drawn comparisons with Merle Haggard and Gram Parsons, "Hello, My Old Friend (Marijuana)" has a bare-bones stripped-down sound dominated by the smooth, "voice with a thousand stories" vocals of J. J. Davis. A plaintive steel guitar is played by Wally Sound, who picked with the late lamented Wannabe Texans. Drums by urban country boy Billy Schwartz (The Witnesses, Those Darn Accordions, The Snake Oil Boys and Goofball).

"Marijuana French Toast" -- It's like the Food Network on pot. J.J. Davis on lead vocals belts out the preparations like Elvis cooing, accompanied by Dean Santomieri's brilliant guitar solo. Also featured here is Billy Schwartz on drums. "It takes about an hour and you start to feel woozy; marijuana French toast -- it's really a doozy!"

"The Reagans Speak Out On Drugs" -- Ron and Nancy Reagan say "yes" to drugs in this excerpt from Cliff Roth's hilarious short film, "The Reagans Speak Out On Drugs." (Shown on USA Network, at many festival screenings, and the Museum of Modern Art.) Audio clips have also been circulated on the Internet and played on many radio stations, but "The Stoned Channel" is actually the first time this funny, topical material has been "officially" released on CD by its creator. "Drugs are the mightiest force for good that we know!" says Ronald Reagan. Guaranteed to have you in stitches, it's also scary because the editing makes them sound so convincing.

"What's Hempening" -- A mock talk show about marijuana, "What's Hempening" features hilarious edits of speeches by presidents George W. Bush, his father George Herbert Walker Bush, and even Bill Clinton (who says he DID inhale!). High points include Bush Sr. telling parents that crack-cocaine is "harmless recreation." ("It's candy!" he says.)

Album Description
A zany music and comedy CD about pot. New, original music includes the retro-punk "Van Gogh Was Not A Stoner," along with many diverse marijuana-infused musical genres (country, reggae, new age, pop and folk) by Jeffrey J. Davis and The J.J. Davis Band, plus hilarious edits of political speeches by film-director / songwriter Cliff Roth. President Bush "blesses" marijuana, and his dad calls crack-cocaine "candy" in this outrageous "pot-centric" music and satire CD.

The songs span the musical spectrum, from the reggae "Marijuana Party Time," to the pop / middle-of-the-road "Those Were The Bongs," to the folk-rock "Marijuana French Toast," to the new-age "Psychedelic Seeker." Focused on political satire, and unusually varied in musical styles, "The Stoned Channel" is about a fictional home-shopping TV channel for pot. Every song is about pot. There's even a talk show about pot -- "What's Hempening" -- featuring humorously edited speeches by real U.S. presidents advocating marijuana use.

"May God bless marijuana use!" says president George W. Bush, following the final chords of the high-energy "Van Gogh Was Not A Stoner," which follows Ronald Reagan saying, "Nancy and I are hooked on heroin." That's after the country ballad, "Hello, My Old Friend (Marijuana)." With catchy tunes for every taste, it's a zany, funny, smart feel-good hour of audio entertainment.

A CD "Radio Show":

"The Stoned Channel" is more than the sum of its songs and comedy bits. It's a very entertaining, coherent hour-long program, combining music, talk, and mock ads for marijuana products and services.

With stereo sound mastering by world-renowned recording engineer Bernie Grundman, "The Stoned Channel" is a slick, polished work of audio art, a "theme album" revolving around cannabis. The premise, based on the soon-to-be-released feature film, is that a cable-TV home-shopping channel is dedicated to selling marijuana, bongs, and related products.

"The Stoned Channel" brings together the diverse, talented musicians of The J.J Davis Band with good production values, humor, and wit. And it's all about pot!
