Steady Jobs & Flying Cars, Music, Ruston Mire
Amazon.com
There's something about the '80s and that post-New Wave sound that attracts Ruston Mire. Add in a '90s sensibility and you've got something that works very well--pop enough to be readily accessible, yet quirky enough to stand well clear of the pack. Fastbacks drummer Mike Musburger keeps things steady at the back, allowing Brian Naubert the freedom to indulge in some Bowie-influenced vocals. Truth is, Ruston Mire are more than a sum of the past--they've listened, digested, and taken their music somewhere new--something too few bands can manage. On songs such as "Facedown" and "Superimposed," there are enough catchy hooks to make a listener think they could be quite popular someday. Ruston Mire have seen the future, and they want to be there (but they're going to bring bits of the past with them, too). --Chris Nickson
Album Description
The debut album from Seattle's newest pop sensation. Ruston Mire contains some true veterans of the local scene - including members of Coffin Break, Pop Sickle, Tube Top, Faster Tiger and Nevada Bachelors. This record delivers 14 solid songs with powerful hooks, radio-friendly choruses, rich harmonies, smooth dynamics and a polished production. Ruston Mire combine a pinch of 70's anthem rock (David Bowie, Mott the Hoople) with a hint of 80's new wave (Gary Numan, Cars) to create a unique blend of purely priceless pop. Expect to hear a lot from this up & coming group on the airwaves!

WOW!.......2000-07-10
I had to hear this CD! When i recieved
this album from Amazon, I couldn't
believe what I was hearing......true
life drama at its best. Every song has
a theme, story and purpose. For some
great music to dance to listen to my
favorite 'Concrete Shoes'. Other
songs I love are 'Monday Or Forever'
(which i heard recently on the radio)
and 'Skyline Nine'. Also, 'Facedown'
is melodic and brooding. It is a frightning
song about the too near future.
All in all, i rate this band, RUSTON MIRE
a solid 5 stars. Great tunes from a fine,
fine band!
Set Phasers for Stun!.......2000-06-20
The retro-esque keyboard parts are but a tiny smidgen of the big picture however, which is rounded out nicely by the haunting melodies and foreboding lyrics reminiscent of Joy Division had they been around in the late 60's or early 70's. Add to this a remarkably tight rhythm section (members of the Posies and Fastbacks), searing and passionate electric guitar leads, and three-part harmony vocal rollercoasters throughout - and you begin to have an understanding of just how perfect a recording this is.
Ruston Mire hide their influences well, just when you begin to pinpoint a familiar context, they surprise you with the unexpected insertion of a new element. You'll definitely hear a hint of early Bowie (Major Tom era), some Gary Numan (it's the keyboard patches), maybe some Brian Eno, Robert Fripp, Pink Floyd, and even some Duran Duran (the vocals). This is art rock new wave pop at it's most groundbreaking. But Bauhaus was never this catchy!
The opening track, Monday or Forever, positively screams 'radio hit' as does the hooky-as-hell piece, Superimposed - while slower balladesque numbers like, Sick Little Drama and Currently could easily be arena rock anthems suitable for another Live at Pompeii film. Add to this list the very moody, Facedown - and the punked up Two Headed Monster, and you have the makings of a well-rounded aural masterpiece.
The fact that all the songs were written, mixed and produced in a small studio apartment by bandleader, Brian Naubert, makes this album an even greater achievement and a welcome addition to any art-rock fan's top ten.
If any of this sounds vaguely interesting... buy the damn CD - you won't be disappointed!
