About the Artist
Singer/songwriter/guitarist Mimi Cross lives just outside of NYC in Atlantic Highlands, NJ. She plays throughout the tri-state area and has played at Manhattan clubs like The Living Room, The Bitter End, CB's Gallery and The Mercury Lounge. She began performing solo in Asbury Park, NJ which she considers to be her musical home and where she has shared the bill with national acts such as Chris Whitley, Jeffrey Gaines and Jill Sobule among others. She has opened at the PNC Bank Arts Center for artists like Sting, Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne and Lauryn Hill, and has played in Boston at The Kendall Cafe and in Philly at the Tin Angel.
The influences of Cross' classical training, as well as her jazz studies, can both be heard in her songwriting. Grammy award winning artist Rosanne Cash describes Cross' unusual work: "Mimi fuses delicacy and power, heart and gut. Her writing and singing are inspiring, evocative and refreshing. It's a pleasure to have discovered her work."
Album Description
Mimi Cross has made an alternative rock album that cannot disguise an emphasis on well structured, intelligent lyrics often reserved for the folk genre. Also apparent are the influences of her jazz studies at NYU as well as her love of programmed sounds and and hip loops. Here is another collection of songs that combine a hybrid of styles from Mimi Cross, this time with production work done mostly by Kevin Salem whose guitar playing shines throughout nearly all of the 10 tracks. Mimi opens the cd with a cover of the George Harrison hit "Dark Horse" and that sets the intimate tone for this beautiful recording.
I Slept..., Music, Mimi Cross, Using a hybrid of styles once again, Mimi opens "I Slept..." with a cover of the George Harrison hit "Dark Horse" setting an intimate tone for this beautiful recording with songs produced by Kevin Salem whose electric guitar playing shines throughout.

This is one of his finest comedy discs, and it remains as fresh and funny as ever. Recorded at the height of his standup popularity, the master raconteur's 1968 album To Russell, My Brother, Whom I Slept With is a fine example of the multi-talented veteran's effortless mastery. Cosby discusses "Baseball" and "Conflict" with his usual blend of impishly winsome insight and flat-out yuks. The 27-minute title track, a memorable meditation on the joys and terrors of childhood, is one of his most resonant achievements. --Scott Schinder
Customer Reviews:
I've Laughed for Over 35 Years.......2007-05-19
My mother gave me this album when I was two or three (because I inherited Dad's love of music, I was taught how to handle vinyl at a young age). Only years later did I appreciate how masterful the material was to draw out loud laughs from me as a preschooler, my friends and I as middle schoolers and me as an adult fussy about my comedy. That's multilevel genius, best demonstrated on the title track, which ranks among the greatest routines ever. But he also throws in The Losers, an account of early fatherhood I can't help thinking about and giggling at as I deal with my own perpetual motion two-year-old daughter (who has never seen the belt. But will hear about it.)
To Russell, my brother,Whom I Slept wiith.......2007-04-12
The funniest, truest narrative on sibling behavior I have ever heard. I loved it when it first released and was delighted to find it in cd. A gift to my nephews whose antics are mirrored in this album.
Bill Cosby's sterling performance, comedy without profanity, great man.

Bedtime Cosby.......2007-02-01
"To Russell, My Brother, Whom I Slept With" (1968) was Bill Cosby's 6th live comedy album. From the 5 Bill Cosby discs I have, it's my least favorite. There are 5 tracks on it. Though it's interesting to hear Bill open a show, I don't really like "Baseball" or "Conflict" much. My favorite is "The Losers", which follows up on "Two Daughters" from Revenge (1967), about his baby daughters Erica and Erin. Adam and Eve's "The Apple" would be done as "It's the Women's Fault" on "It's True! It's True!" (1969) with more material about mothers, though "The Apple" version is a bit livelier. I don't listen much to the 27 minute "To Russell, My Brother, Whom I Slept With" story. Don't get why it's so popular, but it's okay. It's more atmospheric than anything. I'd recommend "Revenge" for newcomers to the CDs.
Sleepover at Bill's house.......2006-07-30
There is no better way to get to "know" someone than by listening to their "remember when..." and "did I tell about the time..." stories. The "Russell" track brings you right into Cosby's childhood room; its like 'spending the night at Bill's house.'
Cosby is such a great storyteller, that after you listen to this CD, you will feel as if you know him and his brother personally. The other tracks, are good also but not as memorable as the Russell segment.
Of course you will laugh your head off. Highly recommended. Appropriate for most ages.
Good but dated fun.......2006-01-29
Got this for my wife. She wanted it because her tape of it had worn out. The fondness for her was her memories of her family listening to a record of 'To Russell,....' together. I listened to it and found it to be hilarious. My only criticism is that they need a brief glossary guide to some of the language, for example bread another name for money in the dialogue. Otherwise it was fun to listen to with my wife.

Intriguing.......2007-02-15
This is a very commanding and intriguing score. Composer Adolph Deutsch did a tremendous job scoring this one. Conductor William T. Stromberg and the Moscow Symphony Orchestra once again come through with an excellent recording intrinsically representing Adolph Deutsch's perspective.
A Tribute to Adolph Deutsch..........2005-04-02
In the shadow of the big film score trio of the 1930s and 40s, Steiner, Korngold, and Waxman; there were other distinguished film composers such as Adolph Deutsch. Thanks to this now budget priced reissue on Naxos, we are given a varied program example of his film score output from 1941-44. John Morgan again as in most of these projects has reconstructed and quilted together suites to preserve talent that would go down in obscurity. Deutsch was a contract composer at Warner a good part of his career, where the five selections on this disc are drawn. Oddly Deusch had a popular music background, but was not given any musical assignments. He was however thrown a comedy or two, one which was the Jack Benny, Ann Sheridan farce "George
Washington Slept Here". Through whimsical dressed up folk themes, we see the mishaps of a couple struggling to get a supposed historical farmhouse up to par. Nice to have a comedy score for a change! We get two Bogart scores, ofcourse "Maltese
Falcon" and "High Sierra". In Maltese the music is subtle and mysterious using economy of instruments; yes, because the studio was on a budget. "High Sierra" also was budget restricted, but Deutsch still managed a melody Steinerish score depicting the great natural locations of California's Sierra Mountains. In the "Mask of Dimitrios" we get a tension filled mood score as Peter Lorre pursues a deadman walking. "Norhtern Pursuit" a WWII
espionage thriller gets a big orchestra illustrating icy Canada and patriotic themes as well as Nazi darkness. The bars of V victory from Beethoven's fifth end the film abruptly. Mosfilm Studios does another good job with the recording, full and spacious.

THE HAPPIEST MUSICAL THIS SIDE OF HEAVEN . . . . . .......2006-08-14
This one is a hoot!
Don't ask me to explain the plot of OLYMPUS ON MY MIND, for as some character in some show once said, "It defies description." Barry Harman (book and lyrics for ROMANCE, ROMANCE) received Drama Desk Award nominations for Outstanding Direction of a Musical and for Outstanding Book, "suggested" by Heinrich von Kleist's play of 1807, "Amphitryon," which may or may not have been "suggested" by Moliere's earlier version of the Greek myth. (The plot is as complicated and as convoluted as the previous sentence.) At any rate, Jupiter lusts after the beautiful mortal Alcmene and poses as her husband, Amphitryon, in order to seduce her. Mistaken identities abound and double-entendres fly freely, aided and abetted by Harman's witty and literate lyrics and Grant Sturiale's ". . . bubbly score, which suggests Rodgers and Hart with a pop-rock undertow." (Stephen Holden, in his review of the 1986 Original Off-Broadway Production) When Amphityron arrives home from the war, not knowing that Jupiter has just spent the night with his wife, Alcmene sings "Back So Soon?" and then proceeds to tell him in great detail how "Wonderful" he was last night, rather like poetry, ". . . especially the fourth and the seventeenth time." The slave, Sosia, having been barred from his own house and bed by Hercules, in the guise of Sosia, declares to his master,""It Was Me." And Delores only needs the mention of a constellation to break into "A Star Is Born" big production number. "Big" being relative, considering the size of the cast. Great fun.
(Holden) "From its firecracker-like opening number, 'Welcome to Greece,' in which a smirking Greek chorus of three men - 'Tom, Dick and Horace' - and a doll-faced, out-of-step chorus girl, 'Delores,' arrive to set the scene, the new musical OLYMPUS ON MY MIND percolates with an old-fashioned sense of naughty musical-comedy fun. Delores's ineptitude, it turns out, is part of the merriment. Periodically throughout the evening, she models the wares of the show's fictional producer, Murray the Furrier, whose name glows in lights at the rear of the stage." Opening night saw the marvelous Ron Raines (LEADING MEN DON'T DANCE) in the dual roles of Jupiter & Amphitryon, Emily Zacharias as Alcmene, Jason Graae as Hercules, Peggy Hewett as Charis, Lewis J. Stadlen as Sosia, and Faith Prince as Delores. By the time the recording was made in October, 1987, the equally marvelous Martin Vidnovic (Tony Nominee, 1981, BRIGADOON; 1984 Drama Desk Award Winner for BABY) was Jupiter/Amphitryon; Susan Powell, his wife; Nancy Johnson, Charis; Frank Kopyc, Sosia; and Joyce De Witt ("Three's Company"), Delores. Only Jason Graae remains from the opening night cast.
David Abers of the Bristol Riverside Theatre calls OLYMPUS ON MY MIND "the happiest musical this side of heaven," and he may well be right. Hal Serra's wonderful "stringless" orchestrations and the small cast of 10 make the show an excellent choice for community theaters and small colleges. I can't imagine anyone, except for the very prudish, not having a great time on OLYMPUS.
Highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:
An Excellent Compilation.......2004-06-16
This is probably one of the best compilations of early choral music I have heard, let alone own. A fantastic selection of works, including some modal pieces by composers such as Samuel Barber with his famous "Agnus Dei", creates a very nice variety of complexity. The overall tone of both CDs is very peaceful yet uplifting, and the performers are highly talented and spirited. This is a wonderful and unsurpassed addition to my collection. A must for any lover of early choral works.

Music that Sees in the Dark.......2005-01-20
Listening to Mimi Cross' "I Slept" is an unforgettable experience. Is it her great grooves that makes such an impact-- her gorgeous and versatile voice, her poetic and hard-hitting lyrics, or the vast emotional landscape she travels across in song after song? It's all here, in music that echoes long after the last track. This is music brave enough to touch down into the necessary dark and emerges, changed. No singer/songwriter out there is more daring, more intelligent, or more gifted than Mimi Cross. Get this CD!
wow! .......2004-11-27
Mimi's voice will take you on a mysterious soulful journey through a landscape of emotions.
"I Slept" is a walk through snowy woods with a cool club undertone.
Track 5 - why does Cross always make track 5 the super funky hit? It's like a mysterious Beatles code?
1st Kiss is one of my favorites.
Why the hell aren't these songs on the radio?
Wake Up and Buy This CD!.......2004-11-24
From a distinctive cover of George Harrison's "Dark Horse" to thought-provoking originals inspired by political/social events ("2 Clay Feet" and "Pray") or her own experiences, Cross has succeeded on all levels with this CD. Highly personal yet universal, the music and lyrics offered here shouldn't be missed. You won't sleep through this one - that's a promise!
Sexy & sweet.......2004-11-24
This is just beautiful. Very moody. I love the cover of Dark Horse but 1st Kiss is definitely the track I can't stop singing in my head--I just hit repeat again and again on that one. The smooth, clear, musical tone of Mimi's voice is perfectly matched with lyrics that really hit home. I can identify with the words to every song on this album. Gorgeous music, too. Excellent all around!!
