Hot and Sweet
Editorial Reviews

"...tunes that come together as a vibrant tapestry of colors ... that stand tall individually and mighty as a collection."
Album Description
"Hot and Sweet gives us music that speaks to and for us not all in one song, but in a variety of tunes that come together as a vibrant tapestry of colors, colors that stand tall individually and mighty as a collection. "It¹s with a respectful tip of the hat that I introduce you to the work of Outmusic¹s shining lights of talent. As you move through each track, you¹ll taste the intensity of our community¹s young renegades and then bask in the warm of the ever-active pioneers whose early efforts allow us all to be exactly as we should be." -- Larry Flick

Customer Reviews:
Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

The Hot Years 1925-1930 - Jan Garber.......2006-03-26
Excellent example of the era.Re-mastering done superbly, the recordings sound as if recorded yesterday! Delighted with the selections. A great addition to any collection!
Jan Garber Jams Hot!.......2005-09-10
If you love pre-swing American Popular music, you'll love this CD. This is an excellent example of popular music from those years. The restoration on all the cuts are excellent and you could hardly tell that these came from vintage 78rpm photograph records. This CD is a must have for anyone interested in Hot Jazz from the late 1920's and early 1930's.

Okay, but not essential to your twenties collection.......2005-06-13
I collect this type of music and I am happy to have almost anything reissued in my collection. This is not the most exciting music out there. I found this band to be merely adequate. None of the songs really heat up. If you are a collector, put this on the bottom of your Christmas list. Put the Hotel Biltmore Orchestra near the top! (It's still available on Amazon).
Well remastered, and highly listenable.......2003-09-04
The Hot Years is a very good album of its genre, and Old Masters does a very nice job with remastering. I really enjoy this album, but be advised it is a CD-R, not a pressed CD.
A MUST-HAVE Recording.......2003-04-24
This is one of the best compilations I've bought in years - know I will isten to it over and over. In fact it's one of the FEW CDs where I bought TWO so I'd have one at home and one for work and car. The numbers are simply excellent and the quality of the remaster is also grand. I recommend this collection to anyone else who loves this style of music.

Classy classics........2007-07-09
If you have all the Songbook albums that Ella Fitzgerald recorded, and want to swell your collection further, this CD will undoubtedly appeal, as it covers the period in the run-up to her trendsetting 1956 Cole Porter record.
Four of these 1955 tracks were conducted by André Previn, and are sumptuous, classy, strings-accompanied interpretations of classic ballads.
Another six numbers - the "hot" of the title - are fast, seriously swinging standards with jazz maestro Benny Carter at the helm.
By favourite rcks : "You'll Never Know", "Between The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea".
Enjoy!

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
The movie version of The Rocky Horror Show has turned into such an enduring cult success that it has pretty much obliterated the fact that it all started with a stage show. And now Richard O'Brien's musical is back on stage, where some say it truly belongs (it was nominated for the category Best Revival of a Musical in the 2001 Tony Awards). With a great cast that includes Dick Cavett, Alice Ripley (Janet), Tom Hewitt (Frank 'N' Furter), and Daphne Rubin-Vega (Magenta), the revival fires on all cylinders. Note that while Joan Jett was in the cast as Columbia, she's not on the CD (Kristen Lee Kelly is). But Lea DeLaria, last seen stealing the show in On the Town, more than compensates by playing both Eddie (Meat Loaf in the movie!) and Dr. Scott--and doing great by both. As a bonus, the song "Once in a While" is back after being cut from the movie. Bursting with energy, this recording brings the rock back in Rocky. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Customer Reviews:
One of my favorite cast recordings.......2007-01-17
This was the first Rocky Horror album I've ever listened to besides the movie soundtrack. Despite the lack of Joan Jett as Columbia and the 2nd Usherette, this album is sweet. Daphne-Rubin Vega is perfect as Magenta. And Tom Hewlett 's interpretation as Frank N. Furter is just in sync with the character. But he's still no Tim Curry. And the rest of the cast is sublime. And with Dick Cavett as the Criminologist and famed lesbian comedienne Lea DeLaria as both Eddie and Dr. Scott is just excellent.
Thougt You Were The Candyman Didn't ya freggy!.......2006-06-22
I thought that this was gonna be just another edition of the Rocky Horror Show. But boy was I wrong.I loved it they really modernized and gave it more of a Rock flavor than in the original play which was more pop.I just loved how they had the Overture and Space shipa partof the cd.They really recreated great for broadway. When i heard that broadway was doing Then Rocky Horror Show I didn't know what to think.Because Rocky Horror had been an off-broadway show for many years. The thought of it being onBroadway was just amazing Because people back in the 70's and 80's always thought that The Rocky Horror Show was much too trashy to be put on Broadway.Because you always think about broadway plays as being classy and eligent. They didn't want a play about Sex and Horror and Gay Transvestites. But this was just a head turner.I loved it.It's definitely 5 stars. The cd quality was great. It was so professionally done and it was great.I think any RHS Fan will love it.This was no candyman!
The Rockiest Recording to Date.......2006-06-07
This 2000 Broadway revival of the cult classic THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW boasts a completely re-vamped orchestration of Richard O'Brien's score. This is certainly the most rock-fused version of these songs to date, and right from the "Overture" the listener can assume this. Many may not be able to accept this harder, bolder score and I myself am a bit skeptical, considering the more piano-driven and sci-fi sounding orchestrations of the film soundtrack or Roxy cast recording. However, it is so interesting to hear these songs done like this that I cannot help but enjoy it. The performances are half-and-half. Daphne Rubin-Vega belts out the opening number in that great gravelly voice she has, and Raul Esparzza sends chills down my spine every time I hear his two great solo moments ("The darkness must flow down the river...." and "Frank 'N' Furter, it's all over..."). Sebastian LaCause is amazing as Rocky, as thankless a part that is. Eddie and Dr. Scott being portrayed by a woman (Lea DeLaria) is one of the strangest casting decisions ever and is too distracting to be able to even listen to her (his? I don't know!!!) songs: "Hot Patootie" and "Eddie's Teddy." Tom Hewitt does his best as Frank 'N' Furter, but the character was so well defined by Tim Curry in the film (one of the most underrated performances ever) that one can't help but ignore him. I'd say that this recording is something every ROCKY HORROR fan should listen to; it just all depends on whether you like the new or original orchestrations.
Good recording, bad show........2006-03-10
Rocky Horror is an American institution. It's indelible, unforgettable, and entirely unique. But without the audience participation, the show is revealed - it's simply not very good. It's a passable (if dated) parody of '50s B-movies with a transvestite main character and some halfway decent songs. The show lives with and dies without an audience. The lyrics, the characters - nothing is half as fun without the audience throwing and shouting and bantering right along.
That said, this is a VERY good recording of what's there. Tom Hewitt does as good a job as anyone trying to fill Tim Curry's sequined heels, and brings some nice twists to the table instead of going the Curry-imitation route. Raul Esparza as Riff-Raff is electric - his rendition of "Time Warp" is unlike anything else you're likely to hear on a cast recording. He blasts it right into outer space, screaming like the world's going to end. Daphne Rubin-Vega is plenty of fun as Columbia, giving a nicely sinuous and raw-edged sexiness to the role. The orchestra gives their all to the new arrangements, and they sound crystal clear.
It's definitely the best recording of the show available, even sans Tim Curry.
Oh Daphne!.......2005-12-29
Most of the reviews have it right here - this production wasn't really Rocky at it's best. That being said, I must say that Daphne Ruben-Vega as magenta is probably one of the most interesting, refreshing, and note worthy things about this recording. Very cool in that regard.
That's All...

Customer Reviews:
Hamlet sound track - Patrick Doyle.......2006-03-10
I spent a lot of time trying to get hold of this CD but I must say I am mildly disappointed. I thought Patrick Doyle's music for Branagh's Henry V was brilliant and that was why I was determined to obtain this sound track as well. Henry V is not Hamlet in terms of theme and plot but I think the music here tends to be too low key and lacking in drive, unlike Henry V. It is still very good in places and clearly the work of an excellent composer, but not quite up to Doyle's previous standard.
Beautiful masterpiece!!.......2002-02-22
Patrick Doyle has truly composed an awesome piece of work. The score is so well done that you can feel the emotion coming through the music alone. This is by far my favorite soundtrack and I listen to it quite often.
Fantastic collaborations.......2001-06-12
Doyle fans are aware that he collaborates regularly with actor/director, Kenneth Brannagh. With the Hamlet score, he again writes powerful complementary music which also stands alone as worthy to be performed in concert. I would be interested to hear lengthier tracks such as accompanied the lengthy, but indeed beautiful and patient, movie. (The only mistake was Billy Crystal in the movie. I thought Robin Williams did fine work.) Although, I confess, this is my least listened to in my soundtrack collection, I do enjoy it, and believe it deserves accolades.
Patrick Doyle's finest score.......2000-06-26
This is certainly one of my top 3 Patrick Doyle scores and a towering achievement. The score unfolds like a great romantic symphony encompassing several moods from serenity and inner peace ("In Pace"), to violence and lush gothic undertones ("The Ghost", "Now, could I drink hot blood"), and a finaly sense of joyous celebration ("Fanfare", "What Players are they?"). After listening constantly to Mr. Doyle's scores for "Henry V", "Much ado about nothing" and "Frankenstein", I thought he could never top such achievements and somehow he did: "Hamlet" is a masterpiece of thematic inventiveness and dramatic power. The playing is wonderful and the engineering is very clear, taking full advantage of Air Lyndhurst's glorious acoustics. If you are a fan of british classical music or a Shakespeare fan (or even better, a fan of Patrick Doyle), don't pass up this CD. Great film music. No: great music. Period!

Amazon.com essential recording
Kiho'alu (slack key) guitar is a durable and easy-to-listen-to music, with a lilting phrasing that is curiously offset by an edge created by the unusual tunings. Cyril Pahinui comes from the acknowledged dynasty of Hawaiian slack-key guitarists. His playing is flawless, his style modern yet still folksy. Bob Brozman is one of America's leading slide and resonator guitar proponents, and one who has had a love of Hawaiian music for a long, long time. Brozman has also been a major student of Hawaiian slack-key guitar, working with many of the great island musicians over the last decade, bringing the music to new audiences around the world. Together Pahinui and Brozman have lovingly re-created some classics, emphasizing the melodies of songs that would have normally been heard in ensembles where the guitar might be more lost in the overall sound. Here the melodies and harmonies of the tunes jump right out, whether it's a sweet love song like "Hula O Makee" or a jumping novelty tune like "Hawaiian Cowboy." Two master guitarists take us on a tour of the islands, big and small, with great musicianship and friendly charm. --Louis Gibson

If you're into this genre, you'll like this recording.......2006-05-23
I heard Brozman comment on hhis musical interests and explorations on an NPR program. It sounded very cool. I explored his catalog and decided this was a 'must have.' I was right. Play this for friends who don't know about slack key. They will be in awe, intoxicated, and in debt to you for showing them what (two) acoustic guitar can sound like.
You've Struck Gold, Hawaiian Gold!.......2006-02-04
If this is your first time ever listening to Cyril Pahihui, you have a LOT of catching-up to do. You've definitely struck Hawaiian Gold, Slack Key Gold with this album along with the wonderful guitar of Bob Brozman, and almost any other album by Cyril.
Recently, I was lucky enough to catch his show at the PALMS in Winters, CA. There was a full-house in the intimate playhouse, and they blew us all away! Cyril and his guitar were superb. He was accompanied by a host of Hawaii's great slack key guitar masters such as, Patrick Landeza and the most prolific Hawaiian song writer/performer today, Dennis Kamakahi.
"Four Hands" is NOT just "easy listening", it strikes every string of your heart and fills your soul and mind with the most beautiful feelings. Gushing, yes I am, and goose pimples too (chicken skin as they say on the islands) because this is where slack key guitar is at it's best.
I also recommend "Black Sands" with Ledward Kaapana, and "The Gift of Music-From Father to Son" album by Dennis Kamakahi & his son David. If you want to get a really good slack key guitar education, also check-out Chet Atkins' more recent albums and some of the not-so-recent ones like, "Neck & Neck" with Mark Knopfler. Cyril Pahinui credits "Uncle Chet (Atkins)" with teaching him a few things, and vise-versa. For a nostagic look back, check-out Cyril's late-father Gabby Pahinui, from whom he learned his craft.
Much more than I expected.......2001-05-05
As a person who listens to the traditional musics of many different cultures, I must preface my review by saying that this is my first cd of Hawaiian slack-key guitar music. It won't be my last. The reason I gave it 4 stars is because I think it's a great cd, but then again I don't have any other Hawaiian cd's to compare it to so I need to leave the door open in case I find myself reviewing even better ones in the future.
I've been on the verge of trying Hawaiian guitar music for several years but I just could never get myself to lose the image of that god-awful tourist music that we see on tv every time someone steps off of a plane onto Hawaiian soil. I am glad I decided to just bite the bullet, buy this cd, and hope that it's different than that music. It is! The Hawaiian tracks on TONE POEMS III really helped in pushing me to explore the style further.
What continues to strike me most about this cd is the variety of moods. Hawaiian music is much more stylistically, rhythmically, and emotionally diverse than I had thought it would be. Some of this cd is very upbeat and really makes you wish there were a beach around, but then other tracks are heart-wrenchingly moving. There is almost a "joyful sadness" to some of this music. And then some of it just flat-out smokes!
I also need to comment on the great sonic quality of the recording. There is a real tonal richness to slide playing on National and Bear Creek Kona guitars. If the recording quality is mediocre the guitars really sound flat and sorta cheezy. On this cd all that richness is revealed and you can really hear the notes reverberating out of these amazing instruments. Just going by this one cd, I think Dancing Cat Records has done a real service to the pure and rich tones of acoustic, stringed instruments.
National Resophonic madness.......2000-02-01
Who does not love Bob Brozman ? You can grab any of Bob's CDs (and there are many!) and you will be pleased and 100% satisfied. It doesn't matter if he works on his own or if he collaborates with greats like Cyril Pahinui, Ledward Kaapana, Woody Mann, his band 'Thieves of Sleep' or anybody else. Don't hesitate to buy this CD and go for the rest of Bob's stuff.
Woah!!.......1999-10-07
This one blew me away instantly. Top-notch performances by two masters. The sound quality is so good you'd swear these two guys were sitting in your living room. This is my third CD featuring Cyril. Now it's time to catch up on Brozman.

Ely Guerra has been compared to PJ Harvey and Joni Mitchell, not to mention fellow Mexican music diva Lila Downs. But whereas Downs's music looks back as it looks forward---some of her influences are traditions that go back centuries---Guerra has always been firmly entrenched in modern day styles on both sides of the border. Her fourth album opens with "Te Amo, I Love You," which is a Spanish language rocker that ferociously roars. Soon she turns to touch on percolating electronic pop, subdued ballads and organic urban grooves that recalls songwriter Joe Henry. Amidst these different music flavors, Guerra's voice grandly soars overhead, coos to a lover, whispers and cajoles, proving she is as versatile as her backing. It's no surprise that the album is called Sweet and Sour, Hot Y Spicy; Guerra shares a lot of different sides of herself on it. Indeed, Guerra's decade-long career is an illustrious one, but this is an album is a real bright spot. --Tad Hendrickson

Sensual, Sexy, Sweet, and Spicy.......2006-07-21
Ely Guerra is one of the only true Mexican female rockers out there. She really knows how to rock, don't expect just soft rock. One of the most unique in her craft. She can go from having an soft angelic voice like Joni Mitchell to an angry PJ Harvey. "Ojos Claros, Labios Rosas" is definitely one of the standout tracks on the album. "Angelito Heart" is one of the sweetest songs you will ever hear. The song sounds like it should be in a film. This album will definitely grown on you after the second or third listen. In no way is Guerra a mainstream artist. She is modern, but she does her own thing. In "Puerto Vallarta" she sounds like Andrea Echeverri. And who can resist a beautiful woman repeating over and over again kiss me in "Besame."
sensualidad + inteligencia = Ely Guerra.......2006-03-22
Similar to Julieta Venegas and Andrea Echeverri... but flat and uninteresting.......2006-03-06
I first heard of Ely Guerra when she released the single "Tengo Frio". Her sound was compelling and sexy. I was immediately attracted to her music. So I picked up "Sweet & Sour, Hot y Spicy". While it's not a bad album, it is mostly flat. Combining elements of rock and electronica, the end result shows no particularly outstanding parts, when you listen through it.
Though Ely Guerra somewhat belongs in the same league as Julieta Venegas and Aterciopelados' Andrea Echeverri, this album leaves her behind the other two. I am going to be a bit more skeptical before I check out her future works.
Best work of La Guerra.......2005-11-24
I am a huge fan of Ely since her first record, she is my favorite Mexican singer ever, I love hearing her voice, she sounds like an angel, and she is very feminine. This record is like the redemption of her previous works, she faces the past and the future, the classic and the modern, the intimate and familiar. She undresses her soul, open her heart and let you discover her world. The songs are revealing a new part of her art, some are funny, some are melancholic, but after you hear them you will enjoy them every time. Very creative record!
My favorite songs are Quiereme mucho, Pa-ra-ti.
un cd medio aburrido.......2005-10-03
por el primer sencillo yo pense que todo el disco iba a ser asi pero esta medio calmado y da como que un poco de flojera oirlo otra vez

Let's Dance to Freestyle!.......2005-12-28
While never quite as popular as their contemporaries, Expose, Sweet Sensation did have a minor string of hits with their freestyle dance songs back in the late 80's. "Never Let You Go", "Hooked On You" and "Sincerely Yours" were their biggest dance floor hits. For me, Sweet Sensation falls into that category of interchangeable freestyle girl groups - Cover Girls, Pajama Party, Giggles, etc. Nothing very special to differentiate them from the pack of other freestyle girl groups, but they did have some catchy songs and were fun to dance to.
While this CD brings most of their strongest songs together in one disc (although their cover of "Love Child" from 1990 is blatently missing) "Never Let You Go" is the only cut that could be considered an extended dance mix. The other tracks seem to be album or single versions. The CD is amazingly short, only running about 40 minutes so there was more than enough space to feature some of the longer versions or some of the nice accapellas normally featured on their 12" vinyl singles.
My peeve: if you're going to basically release a dance CD, why not feature the full length remixes - how most people remember them?
Running times are:
1. Never Let You Go 6:08
2. Sincerely Yours 4:50
3. Love Games 4:17
4. Let Me Be the One 5:10
5. Heartbreak 4:37
6. Take It While It's Hot 4:59
7. Victim of Love 5:45
8. Hooked on You 5:06
Total Running time: 40:52
If you want a better selection of Sweet Sensation dance length songs take a look at their "It's Time To Jam!" remix CD.
ESSENTIAL 80'S MUST HAVE MUSIC.......2005-08-17
This album is a must have for the 80's child. Every song on this album is pure magic. Granted there are only 8 tracks on this album, the quality makes up for it.
Listening to this album brings me back to my early years. It's still relevant with todays dance music.
I'd have to say my favorite song is Hooked On You. I just loved the synthasized beat to it. When I listen to this album, I can not sit still!
It may be from the 80's, but it's deffinately worth having it in your music collection.
More late great 80's dance music!.......2004-01-22
I was hooked the first time i saw the video to 'Hooked on you' and then i got this cd and it just takes me back when good dance music ruled!! I miss good fun dance music like this, Sweet Sansation had good voices and they were given good dance material.
Expose wannabes from the late 80's.......2003-01-07
Sweet Sensation was clearly an attempt to make a teen, second-rate Expose down to the keyboard synthesizers, backbeat, and even the lead vocals in "Never Let You Go" mimic those heard in "Point Of No Return" or "Come Go With Me." Oh yes, and there is even a song here called "Let Me Be The One," which was a song on Expose's debut album. Then there's the cover, which clearly shows two whites and a Latina, close to the ethnic lineup of Expose.
"Never Let You Go", clocking in at a little over six minutes, is two minutes overlong, using that excess time for filler noises.
In contrast, "Sincerely Yours" which was the single from the album to make the Billboard charts and it isn't that bad, as it starts with a Spanish guitar before yielding to the Expose-type keyboards. Upon hearing the melody of the opening line, "Dear I write you this letter. to show you how our love means to me," I instantly thought, "AHA! The Supreme's 'You Keep Me Hangin' On." They crib that melody all right. Still, there's a slight Latin flavour in the song that pardons its obvious derivative roots.
"Love Games" incorporates a few video game sounds, a few old school rap scratches, and is about a louse who plays around. The snide spoken line "If you wanna go play games. Why don't you go and ask your daddy for a quarter" seems well deserved. Game over, bucko!
"Let Me Be The One" is a filler ballad that mimics the Expose song plus tries to mirror another one--"Seasons Change". "Heartbreak" contains the usual flurry of synth effects, like glass smashing and staccato vocal dubbing.
The title track begins with "It's time to jam." followed by shrill tinny horns. This is kind of an upbeat mimic of Expose's mid-paced "Let Me Be The One" and has echoes of Miami Sound Machine's early material. This song actually isn't that bad. However, I also detect them cribbing some of the Jets' sound as well.
"Victim Of Love" boasts a squishy rhythm synthesizer that sounds like a rubber ball bouncing, and does have some catchy hooks.
"Hooked On Love" is the third single-worthy song here. Another song that could've been done by either the Jets or Expose, this features gaggle of random noise. I see here the kind of new breed R&B-pop that would explode in 1990 and 1991. The girls' singing in unison isn't bad here.
This was a Platinum Vibe Production, and I don't know about yielding platinum. Copper maybe, and my rating is generous a a result. Well, the hot-looking cover also swayed me, I'll be honest. Although derivative, somewhat of a guilty pleasure, considering that the girls here were in their mid-teens. Sure, they did better in covering "Love Child" in their subsequent album, but that was a lineup change. But after that...
