Dive In
Editorial Reviews
About the Artist
Chocolate Seastorm has been a band for less than a year and have proved they can compete with the best of them. Alanna Vicente met Dave Merenda and Cathy Merenda at a pumpkin carving party where Dave and Alanna bonded over trombone (both play). Alanna and Dave started working together Dave writing and recording and Alanna singing and learning how to play bass guitar. Once the performing bug was caught, Cathy joined on drums. "This is all about having fun", Dave says. "Yes, if its not fun, or if we dont like something, we dont do it", adds Alanna.
Album Description
On their first studio release, Chocolate Seastorm, featuring the richly voiced Alanna Vicente, create a soulful, retro-infused sort of pop and rock that bears their distinctive brand of fun and attitude. Produced by songwriter and band member, Dave Merenda ("I Will Remember You", Sarah McLachlan), "dive in" presents a slightly more sophisticated sound from their live shows but doesn't lose the element of fun and whimsy. A little punchier and a bit more rockin' here and there, but no less a classic. Release features some long lost covers of songs from the 40's through the 60's. The classic "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca winds up sounding fresh and new with a punk spin. "Whatever Lola Wants", a Sarah Vaughn hit from Damn Yankees features a terrific trombone solo along with Alanna's lilting vocals. Dave Merenda, known for his huge hit, "I Will Remember You", comes up with a collection of melodic heartfelt songs that are accessible and sincere. "Alone" is saturated with raw emotion and the chimey guitar pulls one through to the solo that features Alanna and Dave whistling in harmony. Merenda's song, "Come On" blends electronic Latin beats with a strong pop sensibility. With an eclectic mix of instruments, Chocolate Seastorm combines harmony and melody seamlessly across the board. When was the last time you heard a trio with trombone, acoustic and electric guitars, B3 organ, Fender Rhodes and even whistling! Chocolate Seastorm blends whimsy, pleasure and sophistication which makes for a very enjoyable listening experience.
Dive In, Music, Chocolate Seastorm, Chocolate, Music & Fun - what more do you need? Los Angeles based fun-loving pop trio serves retro-pop with a twist of fun and melancholy.

Mind-Blowing!.......2003-02-18
Unlike a lot of people, I prefer studio music over live music when it comes to recordings, but this is my fav NUFAN album ever. These guys are totally awesome live, and it translates remarkably well onto the CD. The song selection is great as well, and I simply can't get enough of this album.
NUFAN at its best !!!.......2003-01-27
Surely this is the best nufan cd... Lately they have been making slower songs (but it doesn't mean they are bad), but in this cd they show how hardcore they were...
This cd brought me to nufan, and it's a good choice if you're curious about this band.
A good NUFAN retrospective.......2002-11-07
In terms of technical ability you can't knock NUFAN at the time they made this live record. Despite changing lineups after every album they've ever made, the people on this record know the songs well and play them perfectly. Some real NUFAN classics are present and correct; Soulmate, On the Outside, Feeding the Fire and Justified Black Eye are all just as you'd want to hear them. The main flaws with this record are more down to the changing musical tastes of the band themselves. There are too many slow ones! When you're playing live everyone expects to hear the up-tempo danceable numbers, not the tearful slow stuff! Growing Down or Revenge would have been welcome instead of Chasing Rainbows etc. But I guess there's always songs you wish a band had played live.
Pretty good all round. If you like rock ('cos let's be honest, they're not really punk are they?) you'll like this.
Great compilation. oh ya and its live........2002-08-24
This was a great CD, however it wasn't a great live CD. For one, inbetween some songs they make conversation with the audience. I'm not sure wether they're trying to be funny or to just talk but they dont do a very good job. And also thier live music is exatly like thier CD music. I thought because its live there should be some change, some alteration of thier songs in some way. To me it was just a compilation. A compilation by a fantastic, amazing band but still nothing special.
4 and a Half Stars.......2002-06-27
I really like no use, I have two of there other albums (Making Friends and More Betterness), but IMO, this one is the best. It has a really good mix of songs (Soulmate, Straight from the Jacket, Room 19...), and they all sound as good as the actual recordings they were on. I think that the live version of "Soulmate" on this cd is better than the studio one, and that doesnt happen very often. Not all of the songs are Great, But Most of them are.

Customer Reviews:
a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-01-27
Purcell compositions for Queen Mary span the whole of her brief reign. He provided music for her coronation, on April 11,1689; for the formal celebraton of her birthday on April 30 each year; and for her funeral, on March 5, 1695. At the coronation of William and Mary his 'I was glad' was one of 9 anthems performed during this ceremony. Purcell, in his position as Abbey Organist had tailored the music with precision. The opening passage is in stately block chords-straightforward for the choir to co-ordinate while proceeding along the nave, and arriving in their places just in time to watch the conductor for the closing bars. Later in the service the 2nd anthem by Purcell was sung:"Praise the Lord, O Jerusalem",
The centerpiece of this disc is the Ode for Queen Mary's birthday"Now does the glorious day appear" and glorious it is!!! It is divided into 14 sections; some solos, some duets and some choruses. It was easily the finest royal ode he had as yet composed, and also the most richly scored; laid out for five part strings, the violas being divided. Thanks to this exotic scoring, the ode abounds in moments of gorgeous opulence. For Mary's funeral services (she died at the age of 33) Purcell composed 3 pieces all included in this disc and all memorable.
The performers include Westminster Abbey Choir; the New London Consort; soloists: sopranos Emma Kirkby and Evelyn Tubb-countertenor Michael Chance-tenor Ian Bostridge-basses Stephen Richardson and Simon Birchall. All of this under the direction of Martin Neary.
The notable distinction of this recording is as follows and I quote from the accompanying jacket:"Complete music for Queen Mary's funeral, newly assembled and edited, and performed in Westminster Abbey by the Abbey Choir for the first time since 1695". The recording is beautifully adorned inside and out, and the sticker on the outside proclaims that it is music featured in the Westminster Abbey Funeral service fo Diana, Princess of Wales.
Joy and sadness perfectly combined.......2000-02-19
This CD is subtitled "A Celebration of the Life and Death of Queen Mary" and it thus divides into two sections. To begin with, we hear a number of works written for the Queen during her life, among which are short songs by John Blow (including "The sullen years are past" which has never been recorded before) and a massive setting of one of many odes for the royal birthday celebrations by Henry Purcell - "Now does the glorious day appear," which is a sweeping and powerful work with a variety of ground bass arias, duets, recitatives, choruses and orchestral symphonies - all making for a fine and rewarding listening experience.
In the second section, the focus moves onto music written during the mourning period after Queen Mary's death. Purcell continues to prove himself the greatest composer of the time, in his semi-sacred songs (in Latin) mourning her death, and in the music he wrote for her funeral. This section is indeed a highlight of the disc as it attempts, in a very scholarly way, to recreate the funeral in the Abbey as it might have sounded in 1695, with the Funeral Sentences by Thomas Morley interspersed with Purcell's own material and a number of Farewell Marches for trumpets and drums only.
The members of the Abbey Choir under Martin Neary do an admirable job of stepping into the shoes of their forebears under Purcell; accompanied by the period instrument-equipped New London Consort, the sound is truly magnificent. In addition, a number of prestigious soloists appear, including Emma Kirkby and Ian Bostridge (undoubtedly key performers for capturing the purity and delicacy of this music), Michael Chance (who seems a little under-utilised), Stephen Richardson (a rich and profound bass voice if ever I heard one) along with members of the Abbey Choir itself. Of special note- one does not often find a choral CD on which all three senior musical officials at the cathedral (Organist, Assistant Organist and Organ Scholar) are heard playing, but this is one such recording: Martin Baker and Stephen Le Prevost fill in organ continuo parts in various places, as does Dr Neary himself (who also plays the harpsichord for most of the solo pieces).
Arc of Light have done it again- a recording of extreme loveliness, going right down to the packaging which features some beautiful artistry (in fact, the main cover photograph is given an explanation in the booklet notes owing to the special way in which it was produced). A true gem in all respects.
Good music, okay performances.......1999-03-26
This disc presents a somewhat eclectic collection of music devoted to Queen Mary (mostly by Purcell, but by some other contemporaries as well). Despite the common theme I couldn't get rid of the feeling that the pieces didn't "click." Neither did the soloists sound at ease. Michael Chance, perhaps, deserves the most praise. But alas, some of the pieces that he normally sings (e.g. Incassum Lesbia) were given to sopranos, who couldn't do them nearly as much justice. The voice of one of the sopranos kept cracking up (don't know which one: the past-her-prime Emma Kirkby or whoever-she-is Evelyn Tubb). Ian Bostridge is undeniably a great performer, mainly known for his brilliant lieder interpretations. I don't want to say that baroque is not his cup of tea because he is vocally well suited to this repertory. Yet I didn't think he was as great in Purcell as many of his countrymen, such as John Mark Ainsley, Charles Daniels or Mark Padmore (to the extent one recording is enough of a basis to judge, which perhaps it is not). I don't want to be unfair, but I've heard Purcell performed better. This is not a bad recording, just not the best.

Funny, but sometimes weak.......2000-11-28
This album is funny, but weak. It is amusing to mostly feminists and lesbians. I found extremly amusing. I look forward to their next one....thats all I really have to say.
Ani Difranco-Esque.......1999-10-31
Their explicitly feminist lyrics rage about the politics of our world, pulsating with Bitch's deep bass and backed by Animal's amazing handwork on the ukulele and tongue drums. Animal sings back-up and often chants to her drum beat, as they sing lyrics like "I'm sick of race determining our rage, America I feel your capitalist cage... push the system out of me, shake the system out of me" and "keep the people down, infest their heads with fear, then offer them a crutch and charge them way too much." One of my all time favorites on the album is a playful, humorous song called "drag king bar" These girls are the best LIVE - I would highly recommend catching them if they ever come to your area - as the CD really does not do their music too much justice - it sounds as though it were put together rather hastily, and the sound is not the absolute best -- this is why I would only give it 4 stars - but they are great girls, and they are definitely on their way UP!!!! If you like Ani Difranco, you will love these girls as well!!!! *** Make sure that if you DO get this CD, listen to the extra track at the end called "Pussy Manifesto" it is an amazing little chant backed with Animal's crazy drum beats, and incredible voice. It questions the implications that male and female genitalia have on our gender associations. For instance, they ask, why is it that if you are a manly man of courage, then you must have BALLS! But, on the other hand, if you are a weak, scared person, then your a PUSSY?? Why is that? And why do we tolerate this sort of gender slander?? Hmmm... If any of these issues are thought-provoking for you, then you would love this CD, because it is FULL of these sorts of questions, and I would highly recommend buying it as soon as possible!!!!!! :)
Bitch and Animal rock the world!.......1999-10-12
Bitch and Animal are the radest women that have come around in a long while. I STRONGLY encourage any woman who believes in herself and in the inherant power of her being to listen up to Bitch and Animal - they are soul refreshers and power givers!
not for the faint of heart.......1999-10-05
although i was initially shocked by the hard-core, uninhibited lyrics of bitch & animal, after listening to their incredibly clever lyrics and seeing the excellent show that they put on (opening for Ani DiFranco in Albany, NY)i was thoroughly impressed. Although I would not recommend this one to my grandmother, b&a introduce an innovative musical spin to gender/transgender performance art that is not only intelligent but highly entertaining.

Album Description
"Voyage To Afghanistan" is a weird and wonderful little masterpiece. Lyrically it never fails to entertain with little twists and clues, almost like the "12 Monkeys" or "Fight Club" of CDs. Musically its kinda like the Beatles meet Radiohead,Lou Reed and Bowie in a bar and they get the bartender to sing. What I really love about this CD is the layers. On top, the songs fly by beautifully and sound great, but if you wanna go deeper there is a plethora of incredible images and tie-ins. Dig In, "Voyage" is a very satisfying meal.
Customer Reviews:
Underground music for Overground dwellers.......2006-03-24
some stats: 'Voyage To Afghanistan' (1995-97) 13 tracks TT= 55:06
(printed lyrics included)
It's hard to pidgeonhole this cd. Suffice to say that it is very accessable underground rock-pop, with a strong emphasis on the lyrical storysongs of Abraham Cloud (AC). The whole cd feels like a very independent effort, singular, homespun and homegrown (yes,THAT kinda homegrown).
'AC's vocal delivery is reminiscent of a lower-registered Bowie or Lennon, sung in a scruffy, fuzzy and loose (but not sloppy) way. His perceptions project a certain "stoner certified attitude" which propel the various lyrics in engaging, witty and socially sharp observations of Living in general...and life in southern California specifically (the locals will make the references anyway).
The music has all kinds of twists and turns in it making it interesting throughout. Seven of the 13 tracks are preformed with his band (drums, bass, lead guitar), the remaining 6 has AC doing all the wizardry including some sophisticated electronics. These "solo" tracks are the the most idiosyncratic and "psyched".
As I stated earlier, this is VERY accessable 'Underground' music by an artist with a singular vision that FEELS good, complete, and easy-going. It is not hyped, obtuse, contrived or high-brow genius.
Abraham Cloud's music has a rocking groove throughout, and still manages to include threads of folk, pop, and even chamber music. Never pretentious or "obscured by cloud"...it's the perfect bong-load. Just right.
Sgt. Pepper Revisited.......2000-06-06
The feelings I get listening to this Cd is John Lennon if he had lived and went through another very creative period. Its very entertaining and story oriented, and each song is its own little "trip."

gooses review.......2005-07-07
This cd has some of the best lagwagon stuff ever made. They put 22 songs on the cd so you get a lot for your money compared to most cds. They put an acoustic version of "alien 8" and then their regular one after it which was ok but they talked way too much and said hey you want to hear us sing and the first thing that should come to mind is ya I didn't buy this cd to hear you run your mouth. Some of their best stuff on the cd include "violins" it also has a good intro when joe yells violins. "Messengers" is about the same quality as the older version, "never stops" is probably a little better than the old version, Sick is way better than the old version which also was great. "island of shame" is about equal to the old one, "Give it back" is a little worse but is still great. " after you my friend" and "may 16th" are worse cause they added some comments in the middle of the songs that ruined them. "razor burn" was also much better. Falling apart was another that was about the same. "Sleep" had a long boring intro before the song, They also put "beer goggles" on the cd which would have been unforgivable if they hadn't. "beer goggles" has to be lagwagons best and most interesting song. The only new song I liked was "the Chemist" Which they said was there least favorite new song. "Bombs away" "burn" "Coffee and Cigarettes" and "stokin' the neighbors" all were great too. "stokin' the neighbors" is a halarius song. A lot of people I know said the've done some midnight landscaping too except they usually do so sober. The other stuff wasent bad but some of it was seems like it was just put on the cd to give the band a break in between the better stuff. If you've never had a lagwagon cd and want a good sample of all their best stuff this is what you would want to listen to.
the wagon still rockin & rollin along at breakneck speed.......2005-03-05
Well i never--after thinking the Caper couldnt top the live experience created on the Gimme Gimmes awesome Barmitzvah bash, he gets hold of that microphone again and proves otherwise !.With the incomparable back catalogue at their disposal, Big Joe , Big Bitch and the boys just roll out the classics one after another (and still find time for a little drop of reggae inbetween AND a great singing cameo by Leon on "Coconut" as well). The Hollywood crowd are treated to timeless punk chestnuts such as Violins, After You My Friend, Razorburn, May 16th, Bombs Away and Stokin' The Neighbours--the list goes on. The Wagon play with such great energy, and the love every minute of it just as much as the crowd, and leading them throughout the extravaganza is the finest frontman in the rock n roll cosmos--Joey Cape. The man is a true colossus, a true demi-god (pocket sized version obviously !)--a man who can do everything (sing ,strum that guitar, bang the drums and in his spare time produce and promote bands AND run his own record label. He is quite simply the greatest (forget Elvis and other such impostors), the Caper is the man. I cannot wait for the next studio album from the Wagon (building further on Blaze, which was a belter and well worth the wait), and also cannot wait for the next tour of England (as i for one will be right at the front paying homage to the greatest band in the universe).
Best live in a dive yet!.......2005-02-09
I already own the previous six Live in a Dive records and would have to say that this one is the best!
The guitar playing is great, drumming is amazing, Joey Cape's voice is legendary and the comic in the booklet is funny too.
Good first LAGWAGON cd.

This is extremely good for a live album. Any Strung out or Fat Wreck fan should own this. Incredible band, incredible.

this is like a 'best of' without the lameness of being a 'best of.' all live, all great.
Not damn Bad at all.......2003-09-19
Strung out have been my favourite band for a while, but before i say anything else. anyone who listens to strung out should really listen to thrice aswell, as thrice do the heavy thing so well.
The cd is awesome, brilliant recording and a good song selection, my personal highlight has to be lost motel which i have never heard before (probably my new favourite SO tune now). For the old strung out fans who are more into their more hardcore stuff, they will know by the song selection that there isnt all that much there apart from razor sex, dont look back. i agree that there is a hell of f-ing and blinding but im sure if u were at the gig it wouldnt make no difference cos ud still go crazy for em. check out the public enemy riff dropped in the middle of harms way. rather amusing.
go and buy it
Best CD Ever Made.......2003-07-30
For a true SO fan, this is the Bible. Every song is played perfect and the way Jason changes his voice to his new style for old songs sounds awesome, if I were you, I wouldnt hesitate to buy this cd, I traveld over 3hrs to get this CD and boy was it worth it.
I Absolutely Love It.......2003-06-27
Strung Out does it again. Most live albums have good vocal and bad music or vise versa. But in the case it is perfect. The bands playing has no flaws. It has over 20 songs so your getting your money worth. No only does it have some of their greatest stuff they have a mindblowing cover of Ozzy Osbournes "Bark At The Moon" which even an Ozzy fan could appreciate. I say if you buy one album this year make is Strung Out Live In A Dive.

Customer Reviews:
This is a truly wonderful album.......2007-02-08
I'm not big into pop music, but this CD really hit a note with me. I had never heard of Darius until I was searching for a song one day and his songs came up. This is the only album I own by him but I'm happy to have it apart of my collection. Like another user said, if you are lucky enough to have heard this album in the USA then you have experienced a real treat.
When will Live Twice be available.......2004-12-09
This CD is awesome. But when will his new release Live Twice be available in the US - it was released in the UK in October.
GOOD CD.......2003-12-08

Excellent Choice.......2003-10-14
I heard Colourblind on the radio in Europe last summer and purchased the CD prior to coming back. I've enjoyed the entire CD thoroughly. The lyrics are great and music really moves me. The CD has become one of my favorites and I find myself humming not just one of the songs from the collection, but many different ones. Darius is quite an entertainer and I hope he finds his way to the States soon.
Awesome Album.......2003-08-23
I stumbled upon this CD while on Vacation in Las Vegas, it was under the import section and thought I would give it a listien. WOW! Not having seen any of the original British versions of the Idol series I was quite impressed. Colourblind caught my ear and soon I was listiening to the entire album. It's a great CD that you will want to listien to over and over.

"Utterly" Great Album.......2004-07-12
I wish this was a ten star rating system, cause I would give this album a nine. I just have to reserve a five for a pinnicle record. Anyways, this is a really good live record. Like all of the "Live in a Dive" series, this record really represents the specific Utters show. I've seen them twice and it is picture perfect. Why are the Utters the Bay Area's favorite band? Listen and find out. After getting home from the enitial drive from buying the cd, I was on song 12, only half the way through. Yes!!! So many good songs! If there is one thing you can say from a Fat Wreck Chords release is that you are guarenteed to get your money's worth and more. PS. I was surprised at how well the backup vocals came out, they can't be easy.
Live in a Dive.......2004-07-10
This release, the latest in the Fat Live in a Dive series, sees San Franciscan punks Swingin' Utters perform 23 of their fun punk tunes live. As with most punk bands, the Utters are at their best in their live element, proving that they can do their thing on stage just as well as they do in the studio, but with the added bonus of the on-stage banter, screams from the crowd, and of course the energy of a live punk show. All of these elements come together to give Live in a Dive that unique atmosphere that you can only find on a good live release. It's hard to pick highlights because it's all so good and so varied, with songs spanning the better part of their 15 year career having been included. With the acoustic `Fruitless Fortunes', and `All I Can Give', the faster, rawer, punk classics `Five Lessons Learned' and `Here we are Nowhere', and, of course, the fun sing-along favorites `The Dirty Sea' and `Catastrophe', the Swingin' Utters ensure that all bases are covered, making Live in a Dive accessible to all fans, new and old.

Customer Reviews:
a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-01-03
Henry Purcell became under the influence of John Blow's compositional style while they were both employed at Westminster Abbey. Purcell was an assistant to the royal instrument keeper while Blow was the organist. Later on Purcell became the organist succeeding Blow and in l6 years had established himself as the greatest English composer of the age. At his untimely death Blow returned as the organist at the Abbey. This CD includes the following songs by Purcell: 6 duets: "Sound the trumpet"; "In Vain the am'rous flute"; "Sing, sing ye druids";"O dive custos...";"No resistance is but vain";and "Hark how the songsters". Also 2 solos:"O solitude my sweetest choice" (Bowman); "Incassum,Lesbia rogas" (Chance). Two duets by Blow:"Ah, Heav'n! What is't I hear?" and the absolute high point of the disc :"Ode on the death of Mr. Henry Purcell". The voices of Chance and Bowman are a perfect blend and each song is rendered just to perfection!!! I personally prefer the performance of Michael Chance because of the unique quality of his vocal sound and his sensitivity to the demands of each selection. His one solo on the disc is truly a thing of beauty. It's all very enjoyable and is a nice variety of tunes.
EXCELENCIA MUSICAL.......2005-09-08
EL CD CUENTA CON UNA RECOPILACION MUY EQUILIBRADA Y DE LA MAS ALTA CALIDAD
One of the best CDs around.......2000-01-10
Two exceptional countertenors -- Bowman's voice has always been most successful in the higher range and it has a strength that many more fluttery ones don't. Michael Chance is the most secure of the countertenors I've heard and the most overall musical.
The John Blow number "Ode to ... Purcell" is, alone, worth the entire LP. A beautifully crafted piece that more people should hear.
Since so much of the other material is also prime, this is a Don't Miss, as far as I'm concerned.
Delightful, a must-have........1999-06-01
With all the hype about the new North American countertenors, fans of that voice shouldn't overlook this now-venerable gem. James Bowman and Michael Chance are in superb voice in this wonderful array of duets, and the sum of their two voices is even greater than the two constituent parts. The choice of music is gorgeous, the tempi are fast and ebullient, and the CD is altogether delightful.
