Amazon.com essential recording
Following up two of her strongest records, Not a Pretty Girl and Out of Range, Dilate takes a different tack. It's quieter and more lush than previous efforts but just as intensely personal, with songs like "Untouchable Face" that are easier to identify with than many other DiFranco tunes. At the same time, DiFranco's old fans might not recognize the sound here, especially on tracks like the trip-hop-influenced "Amazing Grace," the shuffling "Napoleon," or the indescribable "Shameless"--this isn't the same thrash-folkie of old. There's a lot to like on Dilate, especially if you're a fan of Portishead or Lisa Germano, but it takes some getting used to. After spending time with the album, you may find it as comfortable as your favorite pair of jeans, but you also might find out that the jeans never really fit quite right. --Randy Silver

Dilated Angst.......2007-04-11
I don't know anyone who doesn't relate to the angst and anger demonstrated on Ani's Dilate album. This album helped me channel many demons over the years. Most notably, "Untouchable Face" which somehow tapped into almost everyone's conciousness. The whole album is fulled of punch and pissiness from "Superhero" (I used to be a Superhero, I would swoop down and save me from myself/ and you were like a phone booth that I somehow stumbled into/ and now I am just like everyone else), all cleverly written, all acoustically and powerfully performed. I've tried other Ani CD's but Dilate is to me her crowned achievement. Even covering "Amazing Grace" with a very pissy mood to it, the "Napoleon" bitch fest about the record business, and a lot of moody broken heart love songs. Dilate is genius and even all these years later I can't stop playing it.
Folk/Trip-Hop/Ambient crossover aspect works so well..........2006-09-07
Ani, you outdid yourself on this one. Your heart beats in the languid grooves and has me on the verge of tears everytime this disc spins, down through the years. And that stands for something!

The irony of why I love this CD just makes it that much better..........2006-06-21
I never heard any Ani DiFranco music before I met my ex-boyfriend, so I didn't really know much about her. He was really into folk music, so he gave me this disc to listen to. Well I fell in love with her music right away. It was bouncy and fun, and lyrically it was like nothing else I had ever heard before. I love her style and how she paints a perfect picture with her words, so I was hooked. Well the ironic part is I swear either all guys are the same, or she was singing about my ex 99% of the time. I have never related more to a song before I heard the title track 'Dilate'. It became an anthem for a while, and when I hear it now 3 years later I start laughing to myself because it still feels so amazingly spot on.... "you are so lame, you always disappoint me, it's kind of like our running joke, except it's really not funny, and I just want you to live up to the image of you I've created, I see you and I'm so unsatisfied, I see you and I dilate"... "When I say you sucked my brain out, the English translation is I am in love with you and it is no fun".... I don't know, it's like she was in my head, and just had a better way of expressing exactly how I felt. Most of the songs had something about them that rang true to me, not just on this album though, the live disc 'Living in Clip' had many of the same songs and then some others that also seemed to be narrating my life at the time.
Anyway her music is great, even if you aren't in a crazy relationship. However if you are, this is music that might just help you get your strength back, I know at times I would listen to it religiously because there was something so comforting about it, maybe it was just because she does a better job of expressing her anger and frustration. It felt like I could just put a song on for him and make him understand how I felt, but of course it never worked out that way.
Anyway the irony of who turned me on to her music will forever make me smile, and when I listen to it now it is just a great reminder of how good I have it with my husband to be. For those who just appreciate honest music created by a talented poet and musician this album should not disappoint.
Fighting Back.......2005-02-07
Ani is so AWESOME!!!!! She puts out her opinions in strong catchy music. Yeah theres profanity but that just makes it STRONGER!!!
Watch out world here comes Ani Difranco!!!
My favorite in 1996 and still my favorite in 2004!.......2004-10-05
This is my favorite album of all time. It helped me through a really difficult time in 1996 and I still listen to it over and over again now. I love the way she tells her stories in her music and almost every song on this album still gives me chills almost 10 years later!

Freezing cold ambience.......2002-10-11
I'd heard several tracks from Octagon on various Hearts of Space programs, and had to get it. The music surrounds and envelops the listener, but remains very cold and distant. Several tracks follow the same mold - a series of chords that is repeated, and at each repetition you hear new electronic sounds, building and building throughout the piece, then fading out at track's end. I like it, but it makes some of the music a little predictable. Frozen East, Ashes, and Beacon are standouts. The rest of the CD holds up as well, but I wonder if this could have been distilled to 1 CD. It's still worth it.
As you listen, your mind will conjure up images of bright sun and cold, cold ice. It's gorgeous music, but it is dangerously chilly.
Droning Ambient Soundscapes.......2000-08-30
Dilate is real ambient- droning soundscapes, very popular on SomaFM.com's Drone Zone abmient stream. Similar to Tulu + Nick Parkin, Tuu, the early Instinct Ambient series, Harold Budd (when he's not talking!) or early Eno Ambient.

ani difranco is beautiful song writer, and always sweeps me off my feet. This album relates to me in everyday life.#4 on the cd is my favorite, it makes me cry with delighted tears.I saw Ani twice in my life and both times she looked increidible.I listen to her music everday especially the album Dilate. If any way I could meet this girl it would be a dream come true. She is truly my superhero! Enjoy this cd, it will bring a sound so different to you that it will overtake your mind and body with a feeling so promised and cherished! Thank you Ani!
This woman can do no wrong...........1999-06-30
This was the CD that introduced me to Ani, and in my eyes this woman can do no wrong. I bought this CD not long after it came out, her voice immediately grabbed me, and her lyrics held my attention. I have since been to see her every time she comes to town and bought all of her CDs. I know I'm too old to worship, but if I were to choose someone to feed the adolescent idolizing tenecies, this would definitely be the person I choose.

Customer Reviews:
the dirty south keeps putting out great music.......2005-04-03
this cd is very diverse yet cohesive. There are many styles such as hardcore, punk, noise, metal, and good ol' rock. It is all mixed together seamlessly and interestingly. my favorite tracks are well aware, exhaust, mime, and exposed motion. All of them are great though. The guitar playing is very solid and has a unique quality of dissonant melody. the bass playing is freaking insane. It sometimes feels like one huge bass solo, but it always grooves. very technical bass stuff. The drums pummel on all the songs, but could use a little more flare in some places. Still, as a whole, this band is onto something special and I can not wait for a follow up.
this is a must for metal.......2004-10-29
this cd is one of the best metal releases to ever come out of atlanta.great recording, great production, great songs.technical without being overdone.this is one of those cds that you hear something new evertime you listen.it never gets old.there is no focal point because every member of this band is equally talented.complex riffs from guitar and bass as well as a drummer
that doesen't hide from challenge.this is a must for any metal collection.
See, what had happened was..........2004-05-10
Listening to this on a stock system just doesn't cut it. The finished product is mastered well enough, that not playing it with full range is pure blasphemy. The buzz is that everyone likes "Timeless," and it is a great track, but "Gift" and "Guise of Perfection" are other sturdy cuts. If angst can be euphoric, then LPD captures it like a firefly on ether traversing through the swamp.
freaking killer.......2003-04-08
theses guys have something really special going on. i saw them the other night and was completetly blown away, I had to pick up their cd. very loud technical rock with tight breakdowns, singing and screaming. it's hard to describe, but people with all sorts of musical taste will be able to enjoy their music. all i can say is that Light Pupil Dilate's cascades CD will not disappoint you. the cd has 10 great memorable long songs.

Deserves a better place in music world!.......2000-08-11
I suppose I'm the first to write a review for this band. A real shame though. These guys deserve much more credit than what they receive. This is not a very 'well known' among the people I know. Dilate is a VERY GOOD BAND!!
I strongly recommend this album for people who want good pure Alt. Metal. Like Tool and A Perfect Circle, this band is destined to make a mark in the music world!
I heard about this band by a friend who was a REAL big fan. Then he played a DBZ music video he made with one of the songs, and I thought the song was REALLY good. So I got the album, and I was even more surprised with the results. Then I got their second album, Octagon. They got even better! The songs are EXTREMELY long however. The first album needed CD space compression to fit it all in. Octagon needed 2 discs for a mere 12 songs! Cyclos goes to nearly 80 minutes, but Octagon goes to nearly 2 and a half hours!!!!
I recommend this album and their others, but you may needs a lot of spare time if you plan on listening to all of the songs. All in all, a GREAT band! I hope they continue to make another album!

Album Description
Where eerie, droning, psychadelic feedback meets textured, muli-layered song-writing, there we find Bardo Pond. Their 4th Matador release, Dilate, is their most fully realized record to date, providing a fresh yet familiar insight into the band's unique take on apocalyptic tension and noise distortion. Sylistically, Bardo Pond venture further into the stoner drone territory that they pioneered but bring with them a newfound diversity which is unparalleled. 10 tracks. 2001 release.
Customer Reviews:
Bardo Pond - 'Dilate' (Matador Records) 4 1/2 stars.......2006-10-03
Some have said that 'Dilate' is perhaps Bardo Pond's most experimental CD, so far. Great 2001 release, as it's the Philly 'noisy psych drone' band's sixth effort. Tracks I dug the absolute most here were "Sunrise", the Middle Eastern-inspired "Swig" as well as the CD's two stunning epics, clocking in at eleven minutes, plus each "Inside" and "Ganges". As for myself,I more or less have to be IN the mood to listen to this sort of music. VERY worth while indeed,Line-up:Isobel Sollenberger-flute,violin&vocals,John Gibbons-guitar&synth,Michael Gibbons-guitar,Clint Takeda-bass and Ed Farnsworth-drums.Should appeal, very much so to fans of Kinski,Asteroid #4,Hash Jar Tempo and Flying Saucer Attack.
Sonic Youth meets Godspeed You ! Black Emporer.......2003-08-17
Very nice stuff. Quite beautiful in a noisy kind of way. The music tends to keep you feeling like you just finished off a 20 sack of kind herb. A nice ride.
Levitation Fuel........2002-03-24
Possibly THE most underrated and unknown band in music today. Tags such as "psychedelic", "space rock", etc. certainly are applicable, but first and foremost the Pond are ROCKINROLL. It is truly criminal that so few people are in the know about this band of artists. Bardo Pond have been kicking it for well over a decade. Prior to their earliest releases on small independent labels, they self-released several cassettes and continue this tradition with a slew of more current CD-R releases and small-run pressings both as Bardo Pond and under offshoot-band canopies such as Prairie Dog Flesh and Third Troll. Their collaborative work with the great and enigmatic Roy Montgomery under the guise of Hash Jar Tempo is also not to be missed by anyone who enjoys guitars so sonically wrecked that they will transport you out of your body. What I'm saying here is, this ain't some band that's gonna put out three soundalike albums then disappear-- they've got their hearts and souls invested in this music, and it shows through their prolific yet high-quality output, tireless touring schedule, and the fine art the band creates themselves to adorn their album covers and so on.
Each record expands on the last as Pond continue to widen their palette. I have spent a lot of time with this record (get the double vinyl LP version if you can for the essential bonus track "Summerflux")and I can tell you, it will enmesh your brains. From the heavenly choir sounds of the opening track to the absolute smoking meltdown of "lb.", there is nothing disappointing about "Dilate." It is blissful.
not a record to get mellow by.......2001-11-24
I don't think it's fair to file Bardo Pond under Psychedelphia, a neo-psychedelic pop genre originated out of Philadelphia. Sure, the band uses many drug references and imageries in their music (especially in the titles of songs and cover arts). There is a hint of psychedelic in the air, but upon careful listening, Bardo Pond's music reveals a much wider range of emotions. Songs on this record recalls nothing of the flowery and druggy psychedelic sounds. Instead, a gripping mix of intense guitar feedbacks and drones slowly builds up, in a carefully controlled but confident pace, to one emotional high after another. Dark and hypnotic, Isobel Sollenberger's almost sensual voice snowballs the sonic energy into something that's volatile and dangerously emotional. "Dilate" calls to mind the latter-day Sonic Youth, Yo La Tengo's "And Then Nothing Turns Itself Inside Out", and Turing Machine, as opposed to some archetypical trippy Grateful Dead-esque music. Highly recommended!
Aphasia.......2001-07-21
The leading progenitor of what’s being called the Psychedelphia sound, Bardo Pond bring heroin chic to the City of Brotherly Love. Dilate, their latest, comprises ten [...] and draggy compositions that feature feedback galore and the breathy vocals of Isobel Sollenberger. Sullen she is. And post-verbal. To call these lyrics fragments would be an insult to disassociation. Philadelphia has a burgeoning rap scene and a history of great R&B bands. Does it need a subculture based on – what do they call it here – “aphasia” (a medical condition in which a person is not able to speak or write or understand speech or writing because of damage to the brain)?
